The Young : In Session At Austin's KVRX (Video)

Just back from a two week jaunt out East and back, The Young's next Austin show is a week from tonight at The Mohawk, playing alongside Melbourne's amazing Deaf Wish, the resurgent James Arthur's Manhunt and space rock titans ST 37. Until then, here's footage of the band playing much of their recent 'Chrome Cactus' masterpiece in session for KVRX's "Local Live"

The Young - Glasslands Tonight, Mercury Lounge Tomorrow + New Show Additions

(no cameras on stage tonight or tomorrow, SORRY)

Battling the rest stops and stages of the East Coast this week, The Young return to the New York area for the first time since the release of LP #3, 'Chrome Cactus', with appearances tonight at Glasslands (with DeGreaser) and Friday night at the Mercury Lounge. Of 'Chrome Cactus', the Village Voice's Brad Cohan writes the record "bleeds teeth-sharp and moody, fuzz-drenched earworm-worthy desert jams...The Young lay on the infectiously coiled stoner highway driving songs thick on its sophomore effort, recalling ZZ Top, Television, Meat Puppets and Dead Moon on a hallucinogenic bender..weed clouded, psych anthems". Just to clarify, this record sounds pretty fucking great when you're not high, too..

Upon completion of the current Eastern run, The Young travel to Mexico's San Luis Potosí for the Wird Festival (see above) on September 27, followed by an Austin headlining date at the Mohawk, Monday September 29 alongside Deaf Wish, James Arthur's Manhunt and space rock legends ST 37.

The Young - 'Chrome Cactus' Out Today / Waterloo (Austin) In-Store

Of The Young's 'Chrome Cactus', Tiny Grooves' Jonathan Markley writes, "the heavy guitar racket on becomes almost psychedelic, the slower burning shoegaze-bent anthems become seared into yer skull and the volume knob on yer stereo will slowly inch towards 10," and I'm pretty sure that's a recommendation rather than a disclaimer. The shadowy Fuckin' Record Reviews declares 'Chrome Cactus' is "THE HIGHWAY RECORD OF THE SUMMER" ("two guitars peel each other’s skins in empathy, acoustics are layered over top of wuzzy crunch and the groove is cinched"), The Austin Chronicle's Austin Powell says the album, "triumphs with energy and verve", and hey, while we sometimes find ourselves at odds with The Fourth Estate here at Matador Records and Filmworks, WHEN THEY'RE RIGHT, THEY'RE RIGHT.

'Chrome Cactus' is The Young's 3rd album, it's in stores today and whether you've been following this label since our inception or you still have the use of your original teeth, we're confident --- you might even say insistent --- that this quartet's uniquely Texan take on modern guitar heroics is matched only by their songwriting guile. I'm tempted to offer you a money back guarantee, but it seems kind of shallow to ruin our friendship over money (and I'm sure you agree).

If you're lucky enough to reside in Austin, TX, The Young are playing at the venerable Waterloo Records today at 5pm sharp, with the keg provided by Austin Beerworks. There's a limited (100) run of 12" X 12" silkscreen prints (above) that come with the LP version of 'Chrome Cactus' and they're only available at Austin retailers (Waterloo, End Of An Ear, Trailer Space) or from the band on tour later this week (see below)

STREAM : The Young's 'Chrome Cactus' via Spotify/Noisey

While at least one observer has declared The Young's 3rd album, "HIGHWAY RECORD OF THE SUMMER" ("two guitars peel each other’s skins in empathy, acoustics are layered over top of wuzzy crunch and the groove is cinched,"), we're pretty adamant the Austin quartet's latest is a stone killer even if you're at a desk, comfy chair or riding the subway. You can find out for yourself starting today, as Spotify and Noisey are streaming 'Chrome Cactus' in advance of the August 25 release date.

Though the band's next batch of US touring kicks off August 29 in Los Angeles, Austin residents have the following events coming up in the next several days ;

1) LISTENING SESH :

Wednesday night, August 20, Austin's Whetstone Audio (2401 E 6th Street) will be playing the 'Chrome Cactus' LP from start to finish thru via DeVore Orangutan 0/96 speakers, the Line Magnetic 219ia integrated amp and Rega’s RP-10 turntable with a Dynavector Te Kaitora Rua cartridge. THIS IS NOT RADIO HUT. Smiling (?) label functionaries (functionary?) will hand out the beers.

2) WATERLOO INSTORE

Monday, August 25 at 5pm, The Young will be performing live at Austin's Waterloo Records, with refreshments provided by Austin Beerworks. A special edition of the 'Chrome Cactus' LP featuring a limited 12" X 12" screen print will be available at this instore.

3) LIVE AT HOTEL VEGAS

Thursday, September 4, The Young are headlining Hotel Vegas with a carefully curated bill featuring Breakout, Crooked Bangs & Slow.

VIDEO : The Young - "Cry Of Tin"

A few minutes ago, the good people at AV Club premiered "Cry Of Tin", the new video from The Young's upcoming 3rd album, 'Chrome Cactus' (out August 25). Filmed (mostly) in a NYC storage facility by director Winston Case, we should stress this is neither an accurate representation of The Young's actual rehearsal environment in Austin, TX, nor is it meant to be a commentary on the honest men & women who do heroic work everyday as America's key cutters and locksmiths. While the rest of us are making sick guitar records (or having tremendous arguments over the press releases for such), these courageous individuals are our last line of defense against, y'know, being locked out.

It is my fervent hope that not only will this video provide a hint to many of you why we at Matador Records & Filmworks consider The Young to be one of the nation's most important bands, but you'll also realize the above clip is a character study and should not be construed as "fighting words" by the locksmith/key cutter whose place of business is roughly 400 feet from my house. Thank you.

The Young's next North American tour kicks off August 29 in Los Angeles (with Milk'n'Cookies, Lamps and Gun Outfit), but not before they play Austin's Waterloo Records on 'Chrome Cactus''s release date, Monday, August 25 at 5pm. We'll bring the keg, you bring your ID and money for 'Chrome Cactus' (both are optional, but we're mostly fixated on the latter --- contrary to popular belief, the beer will drink itself)

Tonight In Brooklyn : The Young at Union Pool

Just a reminder that THE YOUNG will be making their first East Coast appearance in eons tonight at Union Pool, playing alongside the formidable Endless Boogie and V.B.A.  Tickets are available here, we're told there's a special on Shiner Bock, and provided you don't ask me if I've heard the new Lana Del Rey album, you might get out of the room without a shiner.

(sorry, I didn't get much sleep last night).

The Young's 3rd album, 'Chrome Cactus' is out August 26 and is available for preorder here.

Coming August 26 : The Young - 'Chrome Cactus'

"I had the idea for 'Chrome Cactus' almost immediately after completing 'Dub Egg'. It was just a title for a long time, but it hung around for a while. 3 quarters of the way through 2012 we started playing with a new bass player, we tried out a new tuning, we jammed tons of new songs; rolled tape in our home studio on material that we also tried out in a live setting during a month-long residency in early 2013. I demoed songs on my own, shared them with the group - cut stuff, questioned everything and left plenty behind. All along the thematic foundation hovered around the idea of becoming something or someone else; like snapping to reality to realize you're not only in the midst of total shit and chaos but you're in some strangers skin; looking through their eyes and maybe you catch a distorted, barbed reflection of yourself and remember someone you thought you were. " - Hans Zimmerman

(l-r : Ryan Maloney, Kyle Edwards, Lucas Wedow, Hans Zimmerman.  photo by Autumn Sparado)

On August 26, we'll be releasing the 3rd album from Austin TX quartet THE YOUNG, 'Chrome Cactus'. Simply put, their followup to 2012's 'Dub Egg' is nothing short of a monster of a guitar album, but one that's always in service to the band's vastly improved songcraft. Here's the first song from side one, "Metal Flake" :

1. Metal Flake
2. Cry of Tin
3. Chrome Jamb
4. Moondog First Quarter
5. Apaches Throat
6. Mercy
7. Ramona Cruz
8. Dressed in Black
9. Slow Death
10. Blow The Scum Away
When we last heard from Austin, Texas' The Young, the quartet was livin' free and their album 'Dub Egg' was the sunshine-fuzz hit of the year in more enlightened households worldwide. Flash forward two years and it seems the bill is due, in a big way as 'Chrome Cactus' is a far darker version of The Young. The breezy optimism of their earlier albums has been switched out for sinister, creeping dread in both lyrics and music, and the instrumentation is far sharper as well. The rhythm section of drummer Ryan Maloney and new bassist Lucas Wedow lay down a heavy (though nimble where they need to be) foundation for the already formidable guitar interplay of Hans Zimmerman and Kyle Edwards. Finding two guitarists with a penchant for such skillful, intuitive interplay is tough enough, but 'Chrome Cactus' is the moment where Zimmerman's vocal delivery & way around a tune has caught up with The Young's instrumental prowess.

Expertly produced by fellow sonic assassin Tim Green (Nation of Ulysses, The Fucking Champs, Thee Evolution Revolution etc.) at the new Louder studios located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Grass Valley CA, 'Chrome Cactus' aurally denies the idyllic setting that it was recorded in. From the undeniable riff of album opener "Metal Flake" to the squalls of feedback in "Blow The Scum Away" that end the record, you'll be hard pressed to find an album that both reinforces and revitalizes everything that is great about American Rock Music in 2014. Taking influence from a myriad of artists such as (early) ZZ Top, Dead Moon, Link Wray, Lungfish and pedal-stompers worldwide,'Chrome Cactus'is a huge ball of power and controlled feedback disguised as ten of the catchiest songs you'll hear this or any other year.

(If you're still getting a handle on where these guys are coming from on the musical map, they've helpfully assembled a mixtape via Soundcloud)

In the days ahead, we'll be announcing Autumn U.S. dates for The Young, though they'll be playing Brooklyn's Union Pool on June 27 ; there's more details to follow about the bill and ticketing.

We Love Music Industry Conventions Disguised As Music Festivals (And Vice Versa) : Matador / True Panther Artists At SXSW

I hope you'll excuse my weary tone --- it's not that I don't look forward to South By Southwest or the plethora of free, unaffiliated events (especially those that take place in glorified jello-shot emporiums masquerading as music venues for one week out of the year). It's just that I'm really pissed off someone told all of the bands below they're staying at my place.

As The Young continue their second US tour this week since the spring release release of their 2nd album, 'Dub Egg', we're pleased to premiere their cover of Belle and Sebastian's 'The Ghost Of Rock School". We could say something along the lines of, "bet you didn't see that coming", but unless you know the band and/or have hacked into our email (and the latter is entirely possible), really, what's the point of gloating? The Young's version of the song will be available on iTunes on November 19. Today's announcement of upcoming dates for The Young (including Texas shows with Merchandise and The Spits) just happens to coincide with the World Premiere of the 2nd video from 'Dub Egg'. Sans any appearance by members of The Young, "Dance With The Ramblers" was directed by Austin auteur John Wesley Coleman, whose previous videos for The Golden Boys, James Arthur's Manhunt and the Riverboat Gamblers have made him one of the most sought after video directors since F. Gary Gray.

We'll be issuing a further reminder and/or revision to the below dates as they draw closer, along with a top-secret (for now) bit of new recording of someone else's composition.

Important Festival News (For Those Who Mysteriously Fail To Read Other Music/News Sites)

If you're like us (and I suspect you are), YOU LOVE MUSIC FESTIVALS almost as much as you love freedom. And there's so many that are close to our hearts.  Matador's Lost Weekend.  Atlamont.  The Gathering Of The Juggalos.  The Cornerstone Festival.  I could go on, but you've probably got some illegal downloading to back to, so let's cut to the chase. Transmission Entertainment's 7th annual Fun Fun Fun Festival is happening in Austin, TX this coming November 2, 3 and 4, and we're thrilled to find out at the last minute announce Tanlines, Fucked Up, Paul Banks and The Young are all taking part.

Likewise,  ATP America's "I'll Be Your Mirror" weekender (September 21-23) has been moved from Asbury Park, NJ to the glamorous West Side of Manhattan.  The Lee Ranaldo Band and Chavez will be playing, along with a tremendous lineup of performers, none of whom are named Louis C.K.   They'll all have their hands full measuring up to Richie Blackmore at California Jam (above) , but there's no harm in trying.

The Young live on KEXP today

The Young's tour took them to Seattle last night, and they continue on to Portland today, but prior to that they'll be paying a visit to the studios of our friends KEXP for a live session of high energy rock and roll, starting at 3:00PM EDT/noon PDT). If you're in the path of their relentless march (as seen below), I suggest listening at 90.3FM or kexp.org to prepare yourself for the onslaught.

The Young, Live On WFMU's Cherry Blossom Clinic, Today At 3pm

Here's one of those posts where the headline sort of makes any additional commentary redundant. Maybe someone should come up with a platform that limited our communications to 140 characters or less (though we're getting pretty good at information in lieu of ideas, with zero prompting from the outside world). If you're still hanging in there with me, The Young recorded a session for WFMU's tremendous Cherry Blossom Clinic program ---- hosted by that national (well, New Jersey) treasure Terre T. --- and you can hear the Austin quartet in all their ragged glory this afternoon at 3pm eastern, either via 91.1 FM in the tri-state area, or wfmu.org.

The Young's North American tour in support of 'Dub Egg' continues through late July, and while we'll have additional shows to announce soon, we can confirm they'll be supporting Mission Of Burma at Austin's Antone's on September 15.  Tickets are on sale now.

So stop taking photos of your car's thermometer and get your ass over to Permanent Records for a free all ages instore and followed by a show later that night at the Hideout.
