One More Schedule Change For Matador At 21; Harlem & Dead Meadow Playing Late Friday, Saturday Repsectively

Harlem (above, left) are playing the Palms Ballroom Friday after Fucked Up vs. Ted Leo & The Pharmacists ; Dead Meadow (right) are playing the same room late Saturday after Esben and the Witch and Cold Cave. We're NO LONGER featuring a Saturday afternoon Harlem/Dead Meadow matinee.

It's a long story but we came to the conclusion a 1:30pm start time on Saturday was a bad bad bad deal for the participants and everyone who'd been rocking Friday night combined. Our apologies for any inconvenience. Also, the event is now officially totally sold sold.

Harlem - September US Shows

After a summer playing the enormodomes of America with the Dead Weather, Harlem follow a pair of Chicago shows this weekend (Sat. afternoon at Lollapalooza, Saturday evening at the Empty Bottle) with a mix of headlining and festival dates this September.  Our attempts to classify 'Hippies' as "the party record of the summer" have been slightly stymied by the album's spring release date, but do you really wanna be exercising seasonal discrimination during a new era of openness and understanding?

Sunday, September 05, 2010                       New Orleans, LA              Saturn Bar
Tuesday, September 07, 2010                     Chattanooga, TN              JJs Bohemia

Casual Victim Pile - Where Are They Now?

Not a day goes by during my travels around these great United States that someone fails to accost me and say, "hey mr. record company asshole, what the fuck happened with those las vegas tickets what's going on with those amazing Austin/Denton bands featured on 'Casual Victim Pile'?" Since I'm far too busy and successful to actually hang around and converse with these persons in public, I thought I'd write a lengthy blog post on the matter.

The Young - after a pair of singles and one song on CVP, The Young have finally released a debut album on Mexican Summer, Voyagers Of Legend. The entire thing is pretty sick, but "Bird In The Bush" is what us folks in the record business like to call "an undeniable hit".  At least until it turns out not to be a hit, in which case we start looking for someone else to blame.  If you're in Austin this Friday and looking FOR ACTION after The New Pornographers show, The Young's rec release party is happening at 2906 Cole St., with additional sets from Dikes Of Holland (two 2010 7"'s thus far that you oughta track down), Oakland's Genesis Climber and the amazing trio Cruddy.

Harlem
- By now, hopefully you've fallen in love, or at least very intense like with the songs and performances of Coomers, Curtis and Jose, currently making their way across the country in support of The Dead Weather and flogging their 2nd album, 'Hippies' with considerable style and poise.. Potentially Matador's first candidates to be awarded a Grammy and a Pulitzer For Tweeting in the same calendar year, Harlem will follow last weekend's appearance at Coney Island's Siren Fest with an even larger challenge, playing Lollapalooza in Chicago August 7. Rumors they're supposed to play at 7am and/or are prevented from playing anywhere in the Midwest for the next 3 years are mostly exaggerated.

Wild America - on the heels of a terrific 7" released by Brooklyn's Freedom School, Wild America are currently in the midst of a U.S tour.  I'm not gonna say "grueling" because for all we know, they're having a great time.

7/22 - Bassettt St. House, Madison, WI
7/23 - Lucky Gator Loft, Chicago, IL
7/24 - Loco Lemonade, Bloomington, IN
7/25 - Carabar, Columbus, OH
7/27 - Anarctica, Chattanooga, TN
7/28 - The Hanger, Athens, GA
7/29 - Couch Couch, Atlanta, GA
7/30 - Saturn Bar, New Orleans, LA
8/1 - Superhappyfunland, Houston, TX
8/6 - US Art Authority, Austin, TX (with Happy Birthday, Woven Bones)

There's obviously more to talk about ;  The Golden Boys are featured participants at this September's Goner Fest 7, while the band's John Wesley Coleman is in the middle of a week long residency at Beerland and recently returned from recording his upcoming Goner album w/ assistance from Orville Neely (Bad Sports), Jeremy Steen (The Flesh Lights, Gospel Truth) and longtime associate Greg Ashley.  Bad Sports have hit both coasts this summer and recently completed recording of their second album with knobby help from Mark Ryan of The Marked Men.   Woven Bones are drowning amidst a pile of accolades for their 'In Out & Back Again' HoZac LP, recently inked their lives away (JOKE) to Hardly Art and will be supporting Pavement at the oh-so-big-timey Stubbs on September 28.   The Distant Seconds are prepping their 2nd album with engineering supplied by Tre Orsi's Matthew Barnhart, while Tre Orsi's recent LP, 'Devices & Emblems' has been reissued by Jon Solomon's fantastic Comedy Minus One label, the same imprint that brings Bottomless Pit's excellent recordings into your homes.   Follow That Bird! completed their first trip to the East Coast recently, and The Stuffies are hitting the road this weekend for shows in Little Rock, AR and Memphis, TN (Hi Tone, Sunday, 7/25).  Elvis are taking part in a bodywashing event (hey, I just report this stuff) at the US Art Authority on July 24     Finally, The Flesh Lights, fast becoming one of the planet's best live bands, have a new 7" coming soon from Twistworthy Records (helmed by Mark Twistworthy of CVP alumni The No No No Hopes), and they'll be at Beerland on Thursday, July 29 with the OBN III's and Dikes Of Holland.   There's more CVP related stuff to hassle you about, but trust me, I'm saving it for another post.

"The Lost Weekend" - Matador 21 In Las Vegas, Tickets On Sale This Friday, July 9

Tickets for "The Lost Weekend" aka Matador's 21st birthday celebrations at The Palms will go on sale this Friday morning at 9am, PST. Here's the details you've been hassling all of us about over the last week (and don't think we don't appreciate it)

a) Tickets/Pricing : An initial quantity will be on sale Friday for $SOLD. .After the $SOLD tickets sell out, the price increases to $SOLD.  A Ticketfly.com link will be posted on this site on Thursday, July 8th.  Starting Friday, you'll have the opportunity to reserve standard rooms at the Palms for the discounted rate of $SOLD per night (the full 3 nights of the festival, only). The rooms feature two double bed and occupancy of up to 4 persons is allowed. The above rate is only available when purchasing tickets thru us. If you are interested in upgrading to a larger room or a suite you will be able to do so after purchasing the standard room. TICKETS FOR THE 3 NIGHTS  + ROOMS are being sold jointly --- we're not selling tickets to the shows separately at this time, nor are we selling tickets for individual nights.

(ADDENDUM -i) A limited number of 3-day tickets priced at  $SOLD---with no Palms reservation required --- will be available Friday morning at 9am PST  via Ticketfly.com

ii)  if, for example, you're buying 4 tickets to the shows, the $SOLD per night hotel fee can cover up to 4 people.  $SOLD over 3 nights divided by 4 is hopefully not an crazy amount to charge for rooms in a world class resort).

B) VIP tickets. A limited number of VIP packages will be available at $SOLD --- details about what you'll get for the $SOLD are forthcoming. You'll have the ability to upgrade from the regular tickets, assuming the VIP tickets aren't sold out.

C) Venue. The room in question is the 2100 seat Pearl at the Palms.

D) MORE BANDS. OK, we're working on it. But in addition to the 19 artists confirmed on the above poster, we can confirm the original lineup of COME --- Thalia Zedek, Chris Brokaw, Sean O'Brien and Arthur Johnson --- will be participating. Actually, we already know who some of the other bands are, we're just trying to drag this out.    MORE MATABLOG CONTENT between now and October!

E) Set times -  we'll post these the week before the event.

F) These shows are open to all ages.  However, access to the casino floor is limited to those 21 and over.

F) WHAT ABOUT LAS VEGAS HUMANS?  Las Vegas' Zia Records is selling 50 tickets to "The Lost Weekend" starting Friday, July 9.  You'll need a Nevada I.D.  Reservations at the Palms are not required to purchase these tickets.

(ADDENDUM II :

Matador 21 In Las Vegas, Oct. 1-3 : Let The Crazy Speculation Begin

As mentioned previously in this space, Matador will be celebrating the label's 21st anniversary this October and this much we can finally confirm : there will be 3 nights of shows starting Friday October 1, and concluding Sunday October 3 at the Palms Casino & Resort In Las Vegas, NV. We'll be dropping further hints about the amazing lineup in the days ahead, but a final announcement and information about how to purchase tickets will be made here at the trusty Matablog on July 5. Are you as psyched as we are?  (hopefully yes, because we're getting in for free).

(ADDENDUM - there's been a bit of confusion so just to clear things up, tickets DO NOT GO ON SALE JULY 5.  We'll merely be announcing the on sale date/time on July 5.  thanks - GC)

Harlem - "Tila" via Amsterdam Acoustics

Harlem's terrific 2nd LP/CD 'Hippies' came out a few months ago, and while the trio are completing their first European tour and getting ready to play the big barns stateside with The Dead Weather, we're entering what we in the professional rock biz like to call "Phase 2" of the project.   What is "Phase 2", you ask?  Simple.  We start linking to awesome looking content that someone has  created.  How does this differ from Phase 1?  To tell you the truth, it's really a matter of tone.  If you were sitting next to me right now, I'd like WAY more enthusiastic than you'd be comfortable with --- imagine one of those 5 Hour Energy commercials gone horribly wrong.

I think this is one of those occasions where you're just gonna have to enjoy a great video clip and look forward to seeing Coomers, Curtis and Jose in person very soon.  It's not that I think you're delicate or something, but I suspect you really don't wanna know how the sausages are made.

New Harlem 7", "LSD Saves"

I recently saw one of the above singles hanging up in the merch tent at a European festival date and thought to myself, "what a horrible shame Harlem's legion of fans back home will be unable to claim this artifact". As it turns out, however, I was wrong wrong wrong, and the new 7" on the Female Fantasy label, "LSD Saves" b/w "Mood Ring" --- both songs unavailable on the recent 'Hippies' LP/CD --- is in stock and available RIGHT NOW from the Matador Store and Matador Direct. (BIG SIGH OF RELIEF)

Harlem - July Dates With The Dead Weather

(photos courtesy Tread)

As noted by new addition to Team Matador Stuart Davie, Harlem are just starting their first European tour.  While they're out of the country and don't have access to email or telephones (seeing as those are American inventions we've yet to share with the rest of the world), we thought it would be fun to sign them up for another tour without their knowledge.

Turns out, however, that's not so easy. For starters, the tour we were shooting for had already committed to another support band. Also, Harlem's agent had already accepted an invitation from The Dead Weather to play the dates listed below. I'm sure you'll agree this is a far more favorable result than anything we had in mind, but it's a very long year. Sooner or later, we're gonna make someone do something with someone they don't wanna be doing it with. Because that's why we're in show business.

If you plan on attending Harlem's free instore next Thursday May 13 please bring donations, non-perishable food items, spare clothing, whatever you've got. The wonderful staff at Grimey's will be handling the intake of all donations with food donations going to Second Harvest Food Bank and monetary donations going to Hands On Nashville. Thank you.

Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Harlem To Appear At Much Beloved, Heat-Stroke Inducing Event

(above : an overflow crowd for Ted Leo's 2003 Siren performance)

Our friends at the Village Voice confirmed earlier today that Ted Leo & The Pharmacists and Harlem would each be part of this year's 10th Anniversary Siren Festival. It's happening Saturday, July 17 at beautiful Coney Island, Brooklyn, and while I'm sure the organizers need no advice from me concerning security, I do hope everyone is aware under no circumstances should this gentleman be allowed anywhere near a microphone.

Given recent events in middle Tennessee, it might seem a bit optimistic (or even insensitive) for a NYC based record label to simply pretend it's business-as-usual in promoland.  But we've long fostered an optimistic outlook (tinged with insensitivity), and heck knows we're hoping there's enough normalcy in Nashville in 9 days that Harlem's visit can be appreciated properly.  Coomers, Curtis and Jose will be playing Grimey's at 6pm, hours before their show at The End, and need we remind you the record store in question was recently hailed by sources as disparate as Spin Magazine and Fucked Up as one of the nation's finest.

Harlem - "Friendly Ghost" video x2

What is it they say, one good turn deserves another? On the eve of the debut of Harlem's second video from Hippies - for album standout "Friendly Ghost" - a second "Friendly Ghost" clip found its way to the inbox of our US licensing-goddess, Brigitte Green. It seems Harlem has a secret admirer - an ad-agency employee with a little too much time on his hands (well done, Mr. Greg Szmurlo).

First, the official clip, directed by Harlem with videography by Blackmagic Rollercoaster (http://www.blackmagicrollercoaster.blogspot.com/):

And Mr. Szmurlo's version, also made with love:
