Steve Gunn - 'Nakama'

(photo : Duane Michals)

stream / download 'Nakama'
stream / purchase 'Other You'

Available today digitally, Steve Gunn’s 'Nakama' EP features reinterpretations of five songs from the guitarist’s recent full-length, 'Other You', created with close friends. This includes new studio recordings made alongside Mikey Coltun and Ahmoudou Madassane of Mdou Moctar, and Natural Information Society, as well as remixes by Circuit des Yeux and Bing & Ruth. The artwork was shot and sequenced by photographer Duane Michals.

These are not covers, exactly. Nor are they full-blown from-the-ground-up collaborations. It’s a third path – using Gunn’s song structures as a point of departure, seeking a new route through familiar ground. They expand on and illuminate the experimental impulses and meditative moods that guided 'Other You'.

“It touches on a lot of music that I love, but that I might not necessarily translate with the proper album”, says Gunn. “To give these songs to people that I admire and to see how they would return, knowing that their music is an inspiration to me, was really a cool opportunity. Joshua Abrams' bass playing, his group Natural Information Society, and his film soundtrack work have been an inspiration to me for some time now. I am grateful that I was able to travel to Chicago and work closely with Josh in his studio on ‘Good Wind’ and ‘On the Way’. Reimagining these songs with Josh, along with Lisa Alvarado's accompaniment, was a total joy. I arrived with the intention of keeping these songs open in seeing where they would go in working with Josh, and am very happy with the results.”

Mikey Coltun of Mdou Moctar said of the collaboration, “Ahmoudou and I wanted to give ‘Protection' a Tuareg feel. We knew we wanted to use field recordings from Niger and specifically Tende music, which is the drums and chanting you hear. We used drum machines which is an homage to Abdallah Oumbadougou, the first Niger Tuareg artist to do that in the ’90s.”

Circuit des Yeux’s Haley Fohr sought to dial back the arrangement on ‘Ever Feel That Way’, foregrounding Gunn’s vocal. “By stripping back his guitar and adding some horns and effects, I worked to bolster his narration atop a pillowy and nocturnal environment,” she explains. “The result is quiet and intimate. It is a serenade for one that lays close to the heart.”

Bing & Ruth’s David Moore said: “It was a joy to get inside of Steve’s music and rearrange the furniture. ‘Reflection’ struck me instantly as a classic song that I wouldn’t want to stray too far from the original, so I added some piano and moved around a lot of the pieces until I found something somewhere between sunshine rock and a psychedelic opium den. Such a pleasure to get this one where it ended up.”

In February, Gunn will perform a three-show residency at Brooklyn’s Union Pool. Each set will be unique format – solo (2/1), Gunn-Truscinski Duo (2/8), and full-band (2/15). Openers include Laura Ortman, Bill Nace, and Bing & Ruth. All shows are free with RSVP.

Spoon - "Wild"

"Wild" - directed by Brook Linder and Ben Chappell

In the lead up to their forthcoming new album 'Lucifer On the Sofa', out February 11, Spoon share “Wild,” a celebratory and anthemic song about finding one’s way from cashed out depths back into a vivid world full of color and life.

“Wild” is the second track that Spoon have revealed off of 'Lucifer On The Sofa'. Like “The Hardest Cut” before it, the song captures the sound of a band cracking things open and letting it all spill out onstage.

Fans can witness this phenomenon in person very soon, as Spoon prepare to announce a spring tour this Thursday. Early presale access will be available for those signed up on the band’s email list at www.spoontheband.com.

The video for “Wild” was directed by Ben Chappell and Brook Linder, who notes “we were mid putting this video together and my friend Ben asked ‘Is Spoon the best band?’ Yes. Yep. Probably. There’s always something unexpected in the familiar with Spoon. They are mythic to me somehow, and ‘WILD’ needed to feel like a myth, or at least illustrate the myth-making process in some odd way. We used the old ways - crude in-camera techniques - to hit this uncanny western film note. Britt is the quintessential western hero. Had a blast 10/10 would do again.”

Coming April 8 : Pavement - 'Terror Twilight : Farewell Horizontal'

"Be The Hook"
animation by Sabrina Nichols

stream/download "Be The Hook"

For more than a decade, Matador Records has chosen to ignore the ongoing (and, as social media caught on, increasingly not-so-polite) demands of ardent Pavement fans who have pined for a deluxe reissue of the band’s much-loved fifth and final album, 'Terror Twilight'.

Some frustration is warranted. After all, we did put out comprehensive special edition sets covering every other Pavement studio album. The truth is that we were just holding out for them to play some shows again.

On April 8th, Matador will release 'Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal', an exhaustive 45-track set compiling the remastered original album, B-sides, home demos, rehearsal tapes, era-appropriate live recordings, and even the rough tracks from Pavement’s scrapped session at Sonic Youth’s Echo Canyon studio. Altogether, it features 28 unreleased tracks. Today, you can listen to the never before heard full-band track “Be The Hook”.

The 4xLP and 2xCD editions will include a book with never-before-seen photos and commentary/context from band members Mark Ibold, Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich, Spiral Stairs, and Steve West as well as producer Nigel Godrich.

The LP will restore Godrich’s suggested sequence – which foregrounds the album’s headiest songs – while the CD preserves the final track order assembled by the band.

Originally released in 1999, 'Terror Twilight' marked a departure from Pavement’s established operating methods. Which is to say that it was recorded with a big-time producer in an expensive studio. However, for all the talk of “polish” and “precision” it’s still very much a Pavement record. And a great one. Like every Pavement album that preceded it, 'Terror Twilight' thrills and confounds. Often at the same time. Twenty-two years on, the songs remain moody, strange, and eminently deserving of re-celebration.

Julien Baker, Sharon Van Etten, & Angel Olsen Announce The Wild Hearts Tour

Photo: Alysse Gafkjen

Purchase / Stream Little Oblivions

Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen, and Julien Baker announce The Wild Hearts Tour, an epic co-headlining tour that sees these three legendary songwriters, all known for their incredible, cathartic live performances, playing across North America this July and August. The tour consists of mostly outdoor venues, with the exception of the legendary Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and Massey Hall in Toronto. Each artist will play with their own respective band. Tickets are on sale this Friday, January 14th at 10am local time, and special guest Spencer. will support on all dates.

“I’m so thrilled to be traveling and playing music alongside Spencer., Julien Baker and Sharon Van Etten. It’s truly a dream, something to hold and share collaboratively as we get out from under the last few years. I know for fans it’s something different and special too, and for me, it’s sort of like a caravan summer camp-a chance to get to know other artists in a deeper way and talk about music and life and how it affects us all as we move forward. Most of all, I am excited to sing live again, in an open and real way, both alone and together with my tourmates." - Angel Olsen

"Sharon and Angel are artists that I have genuinely admired for many years and whose music has honestly informed much of my own writing and music making, and I’m thrilled to be sharing a stage with them every night. I think after interacting with their recorded work separately so much, it will be special to get to learn from them as we share the space of performance." - Julien Baker

Our aim is to strengthen our respective communities and promote camaraderie in the music world in a safe and enjoyable environment. We have carefully chosen the venues we think will deliver the best experience for us and our fans. I look up to Angel and have the deepest admiration for Julien and Spencer.. It is an honor, to say the least, to be able to share the stage with such talent on a tour across North America.” - Sharon Van Etten

Today, critically-acclaimed rock band Spoon released a brand-new cover of David Bowie’s iconic song, “I Can’t Give Everything Away.” One of the standouts from Bowie’s masterful final album, Blackstar, the Amazon Original track was released as a part of Amazon Music’s month-long [RE]DISCOVER campaign celebrating David Bowie’s 75th birthday this Saturday, January 8th.

“’I Can’t Give Everything Away’ is a tune Alex and I have been playing since we learned it for an acoustic and piano show in Mexico City in 2016,” said Britt Daniel of Spoon. “It’s just a fantastic song, and as the last song on Bowie's final album it doesn't disappoint. We recorded this version live in December 2021.”

The band will be touring in support of their universally acclaimed full-length, 'Afrique Victime', that was released this past May on Matador Records. These new East Coast dates will bookend previously announced North American support dates for Parquet Courts in late February and early March. The band will then make their way across the pond to play an extensive UK/EU tour in the Spring. A full list of upcoming shows can be found below
