Interpol - "Greenwich" (Daniel Avery Interpolation)

Out today, Daniel Avery’s take on “Greenwich” completes the ‘Interpolations’ series, a collaborative project reworking songs from Interpol’s latest album, ‘The Other Side OfMake-Believe’.

"It’s not an exaggeration to say Interpol’s music helped shape my life as a youngster so it’s with great pride I present this remix for Greenwich,” says Avery. “I was reluctant to touch the track at first but I feel I’ve landed upon my own version of the band’s seductive shadows that have always meant so much to me."

Interpol launched their run of North American tour dates with The Smashing Pumpkins this week in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The band will play a pair of sold out headline shows at LA's Greek Theatre at the end of October, before rounding out the year with dates in Australia, Jakarta and Thailand and a two night residency at New York’s Beacon Theatre. A full tour schedule is below.

"Greenwich" follows interpolations from Makaya McCraven (“Big Shot City”), Jeff Parker (“Passenger”), Jesu (“Toni”) and Water From Your Eyes (“Something Changed”).

Water From Your Eyes have taken on recent touring companions Interpol’s track “Something Changed” as part of the latter’s ‘Interpolations’ project, which sees songs from Interpol’s latest album ‘The Other Side Of Make-Believe’ reimagined by different artists.

Taking the original’s punch-drunk piano shuffle and brooding vocals and subjecting them to an expertly wielded sonic and rhythmic sledgehammer, the interpolation adds vocals from Water From Your Eyes vocalist Rachel Brown. “The idea was to invert the tone of the song, like a photo negative,” says Water From Your Eyes’ Nate Amos, “reframing change from something foreboding into something encouraging - as well as creating a conversation between Paul and Rachel in order to place the thoughts externally rather than internally.”

Water From Your Eyes recently performed three songs from their critically acclaimed new album ‘Everyone’s Crushed’ for Bandcamp Live. Joined by additional guitarist Al Nardo, the band shred through album highlights “Barley”, “Out There” and “True Life”. The performance is followed by a conversation with journalist Shaad D’Souza.

Later today, Water From Your Eyes' Nate Amos and Interpol's Paul Banks will go live on their bands’ respective Instagram accounts tomorrow for a conversation at approximately 1pm ET.

Interpol - "Toni" (Jesu Interpolation)

Interpol have released the third installment from ‘Interpolations,’ a series of collaborations reworking songs from the band’s latest album ‘The Other Side Of Make-Believe’, which sees Jesu’s cavernous and heavy take on album opener ‘Toni’. Listen HERE.

The track follows interpolations from Makaya McCraven (“Big Shot City”) and Jeff Parker (“Passenger”), with contributions from Daniel Avery and Water From Your Eyes to follow.

"I was overwhelmingly daunted to be asked to remix Interpol in my jesu guise,” says Jesu’s Justin Broadrick. “They're an incredible band, with such a solid discography behind them, and they just ooze identity, I considered that I could not do them any justice at all in my context. Luckily, I persevered, and even more luckily got to a place that both Interpol and I were very, very happy with; I attempted to merge both projects - capture Interpol and juxtapose the fundamental jesu concept - slow, heavy and riddled with loss/melancholy, even adding my own down tuned guitars to the mix. I hope people receive and comprehend this as we collectively do....."

Last month, Interpol launched ‘Interpolations,’ a series of collaborations that finds songs from  ‘The Other Side Of Make-Believe’, reworked by artistsDaniel Avery, Makaya McCraven, Jeff Parker, Jesu, and Water From Your Eyes.

Today, you can hear the second installment, an interpolation of “Passenger” created by guitarist and composer Jeff Parker. “When asked to make a remix for Interpol, I was intrigued and initially excited to make something from the drum breaks on the original version of “Passenger,”” explains. Parker. “However, the muse had other plans for me, and it went in a different direction.”

Interpol - 'Interpolations' / "Big Shot City" (Makaya McCraven)

Interpol have announced ‘Interpolations’, a project to be released over the coming months, which sees songs from the band’s latest album, ‘The Other Side Of Make-Believe’, reworked by a group of artists encompassing Daniel Avery, Makaya McCraven, Jeff Parker, Jesu and Water From Your Eyes. The first installment of the series is released today, with Makaya McCraven’s interpolation of “Big Shot City”.

(stream / download "Big Shot City" (Makaya McCraven interpolation))

In addition, a mini documentary by photographer and frequent collaborator Atiba Jefferson, "Making 'The Other Side of Make-Believe'" filmed during the band’s recording of 'The Other Side Of Make Believe' in November 2021 in London’s Battery Studio, sees its first wide release today, following its initial debut as part of the Big Shot City album release event in LA.

In a statement on the Interpolations project, the band said:

“We are proud to unveil the ‘Interpolations’ project, a collaborative series wherein 5 talented artists were invited to reimagine tracks from our latest album, 'The Other Side Of Make-Believe' - and the results are truly inspired.

From the Latin drum and bass rhythms applied to “Big Shot City” by Makaya McCraven to the esoteric and propulsive soundscape created by Water From Your Eyes for “Something Changed,” Interpolations is an exotic journey that reframes our songs and joins them to the vision of talented artists we admire.

Daniel Avery completely strips “Greenwich” down to only a few of its component parts - allowing Juliet Seger’s angelic backing vocal to float hypnotically over driving electronic currents.

And the reimaginings of “Passenger” and “Toni” by Jeff Parker and Jesu respectively round out this collection with flare, with recontextualized arrangements underlining and often deepening the emotion, drama and excitement of the originals.

We are so excited that such a great collection of artists were able to connect with our music and we hope these songs connect with you.”

Matador Revisionist History Podcast Episode 8: Spoon's Britt Daniel and Interpol's Paul Banks

Stream The Matador Revisionist History Podcast

Stream / Purchase Limited White LP of Spoon's 'Kill The Moonlight'

Stream Interpol's 'The Black EP'

Our core philosophy here at Matador Revisionist History HQ is “What you want, once we’re ready.” And this time, we’re really living up to that.

Last summer, we celebrated the 20th anniversaries of Interpol’s Turn on the Bright Lights and Spoon’s Kill the Moonlight – two career-defining records that were released on the very same day in August of 2002.

Around that time, front men Paul Banks and Britt Daniel huddled with our host Matt Sweeney and taped an episode of the RH podcast. Seven months later, we’re finally prepared for you to hear it.

Everybody on this episode goes way, way back: Sweeney met Daniel during Spoon’s first tour. He met Banks when Turn on the Bright Lights was released, which is around the time Banks initially met Daniel. They reminisce about NYC’s Luna Lounge, Paul explains the importance of yelling in an Interpol song, and Britt stakes his claim to the cowboy hat from the “Wild” video.

Interpol have shared a new video for ‘Passenger’, one of the highlights from this year's The Other Side of Make-Believe. The video came to be unexpectedly – longstanding Interpol fan Jamie McDonald had been experimenting with animation and produced the video on their own, feeling a special connection with the song. After uploading it to one of Interpol’s social pages, the video came to the attention of the band who loved it and asked if they could use it as an official video.

Director Jamie McDonald says: "Passenger spoke to me. As soon as I listened to it, I was inspired. The idea behind the music video visually, is that of a fever dream. We're exploring the subconscious, delving into dreams, and delving even deeper into nightmares. This is really a passion project for me."

Interpol - 'The Black EP' / 'Turn On The Bright Lights' (2002 Documentary)

(photo : Michael Edwards)

On August 20th, Interpol’s canonical debut album 'Turn On The Bright Lights' turns 20. To commemorate this moment, the band today make the fan-favorite and TOTBL companion 'The Black EP' available on digital platforms.

Originally released on August 26, 2003, as a limited-edition CD, the long out of print 'The Black EP' features the studio version of "Say Hello To The Angels", a demo of "NYC" and four TOTBL-era songs recorded live in session for Radio France in 2002, including fabled non-album bonus track "Specialist".

Accompanying the release is a 2002 short documentary on the band made by a French subsidiary of then-label EMI. Hitherto lost in the annals of 144p
YouTube rips, the 13-minute clip is brought to glorious hi-res restoration,
featuring interviews with the band as well as snippets of performances of
‘PDA’, ‘NYC’, ‘Untitled’ and ‘Stella was a diver and she was always down’.

Interpol today (July 15th) release their seventh album 'The Other Side Of Make-Believe'.

(stream / purchase 'The Other Side Of Make-Believe')

On the sidelines of three sold-out London release shows over the weekend, the band will be attending the opening of the Brick Lane branch of their global exhibition and pop-up shop in collaboration with photographer Atiba Jefferson and Brain Dead Clothing, "Big Shot City". The exhibition will also include installations in Los Angeles, New York, Mexico City and Tokyo. A full list of dates for each location can be found below.

Interpol’s video for latest single ‘Gran Hotel’ is now available to watch on YouTube. Paul Banks says on the song and Malia James-directed clip: “The lyrics to Gran Hotel tell a story of grief and heartbreak, of a character processing loss. Working with a fantastic camera crew and with the help of two very talented actors, Malia created a powerful video that conveys the events that lead to that loss. It’s a work of art filled with mood and color that we are very proud to share with you.”

‘Gran Hotel’ follows the two-part short film for singles ‘Toni’ and ‘Something Changed’ and emerging live favorite ‘Fables’.

Big Shot City exhibition events:

LA:          Hosted at the Brain Dead Studios, 14 – 16 July
NYC:       Hosted at 155 Lafayette Street, 13 – 16 July
MX City:  Hosted at Not A Gallery, 16 – 17 July
Tokyo:     Hosted at Brain Dead’s space in Harajuku – 15 July

“‘Fables’ features one of Daniel’s hottest licks,” comments Paul. “A breezy vocal with optimistic lyrics and a bouncy drum beat evocative of classic R&B with a nod to the golden age of hip hop. It’s a summer jam and a piece of music we are particularly proud of.”

The new track follows the band’s well-received first two singles, ‘Toni’ and ‘Something Changed’- which were accompanied by a stellar two-part film directed by Van Alpert.

Last week, Interpol premiered “Toni”, the first single from their new album ‘The Other Side Of Make-Believe’, released July 15th on Matador. The song was accompanied by the opening instalment of a two-part film directed by Van Alpert.

Today, Interpol release the second and concluding part, as well as unveil new song "Something Changed".Singer Paul Banks says: “In ‘Something Changed,’ part two of our short film with Van Alpert, reality and reverie converge and our two lead characters find themselves in a kind of dream state - being pursued inexorably by an ominous figure (played by myself.) The lives of the three are intertwined in a nebula of fear, retribution, desire, and defiance. Who will receive their just deserts? Stay tuned and find out.”

Director Van Alpert: “Paul and I like the idea that 'Something Changed' would be like a dream. It’s as if our two main characters wake up from what happened in ‘Toni’ and their lives are irreparably different. They are now on the run from some dark force that is a bit more primal and encroaching.”

Coming July 15 : Interpol - 'The Other Side of Make-Believe'

“Still in shape, my methods refined,” sings Paul Banks on "Toni", the opening track and lead single from Interpol’s 7th LP 'The Other Side of Make-Believe'. The album breaks fresh ground for the group: parallel to exploring the sinister undercurrents of contemporary life, Interpol’s new songs are imbued with pastoral longing and newfound grace. Daniel Kessler's serpentine guitar arrangements crest skywards, Samuel Fogarino shatters his percussive precision into strange metres, while Paul Banks’ sonorous voice exudes a vulnerability that is likely to catch most long-term fans of the band off guard. After all, says Banks, “there’s always a seventh time for a first impression.”

'The Other Side of Make-Believe' began remotely across 2020. In early 2021, Interpol reconvened to flesh out new material at a rented home in the Catskills, before completing it later that year in North London, working for the first time with production veteran Flood (Mark Ellis), as well as teaming up again with former co-producer Alan Moulder.

If fate didn’t quite ordain the circumstances for Interpol’s seventh album, it was at least fortunate that the band had happily concluded their Marauder cycle on stage in front of 30 thousand-odd Peruvian fans. Rather than be sent scrambling like so many other musicians, when the first lockdown clamped Interpol had no new release to promote and no tour to rearrange. They quickly got into a productive mood.

Writing on their own in those geographically-dispersed early stages gave the members a way out of their respective heads: “We really extracted the honey out of this situation”, says Fogarino. Kessler echoes the sentiment: “Working alone was raw at first, but has opened up a vivid new chapter for us.” In the Interpol Venn Diagram, each member found a way of expanding their individual circle in perfect harmony.

As Banks was grounded in Edinburgh for close to nine months, he got cosy in a window-side chair with a pen, pad and atypically cream-coloured bass guitar. “We usually write live, but for the first time I’m not shouting over a drumkit,” he says. “Daniel and I have a strong enough chemistry that I could picture how my voice would complement the scratch demos he emailed over. Then I could turn the guys down on my laptop, locate these colourful melodies and generally get the message across in an understated fashion.” Banks adjusting his personal volume dimmer to a hush chimes with a period of global disquiet and the yearn for reconnection:  "Flood told me the vocals on the demos evoked Mickey Rourke in "Barfly", singing to a patron at the end of the tabletop, and we never felt the need to flip that smoky intimacy into something big and loud when it came to rehearse and record. I got a real kick out of doing the opposite.”

Coming from a group whose early material was characterised by Polish knife-wielders and incarcerated serial killers, you might expect Interpol’s take on the present day to be an emotional tar pit — perhaps doubly so, given the towering credentials of Flood and Moulder’s history with Nine Inch Nails, Curve, Gary Numan, Depeche Mode and more.

Yet Banks felt the call to push in a “counterbalancing” direction, with paeans to mental resilience and the quiet power of going easy. “The nobility of the human spirit is to rebound,” he says. “Yeah, I could focus on how fucked everything is, but I feel now is the time when being hopeful is necessary, and a still-believable emotion within what makes Interpol Interpol.” Kessler concurs: “The process of writing this record and searching for tender, resonant emotions took me back to teenage years; it was transformative, almost euphoric. I felt a rare sensation of purpose biting on the end of my fishing rod and I was compelled to reel it in.”

Even with spare piano caressing the intro of "Something Changed", open-hearted cyclical chord progressions on "Passenger", or anthemic waves of Kessler’s cresting guitar on "Big Shot City", it doesn’t mean Interpol are entirely stopping to smell the roses, though. 'The Other Side of Make-Believe'’s title, cover and a frequent lyrical lean toward fables, smokescreens and the mutability of truth reflect Banks’ disgust with the curdling of the information age. “I feel like the slipperiness of reality, and being willing to get violent on the basis of a factual disagreement, has had a super strenuous effect on the psyche of everyone in the world. Although,” he laughs, “I was talking about it so often that it kind of spooked my bandmates, so I found a way to express my concerns more through the lens of human beings' non-rational faculties, and less civilizational collapse.”

On 'The Other Side of Make-Believe', a deep interpersonal understanding means each member respects the other’s respective strengths better than ever, letting Interpol’s elemental qualities shine through. Song by song, Kessler sketches the architectural blueprint (invariably while watching a film — locus of inspiration for almost every song in the band’s catalogue), Banks frames artwork on the wall, then Fogarino arranges the furniture to have a certain positioning and intent.

Fogarino highlights Flood’s part in this equation “was to hyperbolise all of our good qualities. Our band has never exploited rock ‘n roll tropes, no big drum fills or wailing solos, so he located the core honesty in our sound and found a way to widen it. There’s a phrase I love about drumming: ‘the rhythm hates the melody’ — the best kind of drumming either totally accentuates what’s being conveyed, or ploughs through it.” So what does the splashy, dramatic beat on songs like "Renegade Hearts" and "Gran Hotel" imply? The answer comes back with a grin: “I guess Flood gave me room to plough.”

The band found themselves struck by the producer’s egoless way of operating and the breeziness of recording in his North London studio. They also seem charged by how much Flood and Moulder complimented, rather than challenged, their kinetic energy when performing. “I wouldn’t change a thing,” Kessler states. And though he means Flood and Moulder’s contributions, that sentiment extends to Interpol’s work as a whole.

'The Other Side of Make-Believe' will soon feel as familiar in the public consciousness as it is to Paul Banks, Daniel Kessler and Sam Fogarino. Ever the paradox, the noirish trio have weathered nearly seven albums’ and several line-ups’ worth of rollercoasters far better than anyone might have predicted, never letting their sense of purpose escape. Over time, tags like ‘alternative’ and ‘indie’ have even faded from view. They are simply a rock group nowadays; one of the most distinctive, consequential and enduring rock groups of the 21st century so far. And a quarter-century into their lifespan, the band are all fired up again.

Interpol: their methods refined, still in terrific shape.
– Gabriel Szatan
