If you haven't gotten your hands on 'Memphis' yet, well, what are you waiting for?

Magic Kids “Hey Boy” and “Cry With Me Baby” (Live At Levitt Shell)

To celebrate Magic Kids' release of Memphis a little over a month ago, the band joined together with the Memphis Youth Symphony Orchestra to bring the arrangements of their debut to life. Levitt Shell, supposed home of Elvis' first public performance hosted every type of Memphian- young and old came together to share the music, Zach from Goner gave a beautiful introduction. The band rolled through their record with confidence and fun- they charmed us, Bennett led the band, almost falling off the stage a couple of times....but those songs...flanked by the boom of the full orchestra they were intended to be played with blew us away.

We've said it before, but hearing Magic Kids' songs in that context really drove home the fact that they're writing timeless, classic pop songs that should be treasured for a long time to come. The night was a memorable one but luckily we have a couple of these videos to help us experience these treasures in full HD vision. Directed by Joel T Rose.

Magic Kids begin a full U.S. tour with fellow-Memphian Bosco Delrey this Friday. Go see them live and catch something special.

Magic Kids "Candy" for Yours Truly

Magic Kids were in the Bay Area for the first time. They played Valentines Day with Girls and Smith Westerns the night before and it was a beautiful show. The next day they cobbled together this orchestra, which features Christopher + Garrett from Girls, Max from Smith Westerns, some friends of someone's aunt who had a weekend flute club, a real string section and some more random friends to play this early version of Candy for the Yours Truly guys. It was kind of a rainy day but it felt so warm in that room. Hope you enjoy. Video is hosted HERE on your's truly's site which also has a nice letter from the band.

The band is leaving for Europe this week and coming back for a tour of the states. Tour dates HERE

Magic Kids new video "Superball"

This week Magic Kids released their record, played a symphony accompanied show for 500 of their hometown friends and fans, and left for a week-long instore tour. But the news doesn't stop here. Happy to share this new video for "Superball" directed by Jack Ferry. Evokes some simple classic vids, faces, instruments, soft-focus lights...eternally into it.

Thank You Memphis

Tonight's Magic Kids show at the Levitt Bandshell was really really special. Thank you to the hundreds of people that came out, the Memphis Youth Symphony who helped realize the ambition of the band's arrangements, Goner Records for selling (and selling out of) the album, and of course Magic Kids. The city of Memphis is truly a strange and wonderful place and I can't think of a more strange and wonderful tribute than tonight. Really bowled over.

Also really excited about the response people have been having to the record. Reviews are trickling in little by little but so far so good. Prefix assigned it one of the top 3 scores they've given any record so far this year. Thank you. A few nice selections below....

PREFIX- "A truly ineffable pop album. The Magic Kids are going at your heart with every melodic tool in their arsenal -- shouts and synths, strings and sugary production -- all in an effort to make your summer (or fall, or winter, or old age) that much better."

Washington Post- "more than a simple exercise in retro charm ... a fully realized and immaculately executed pop vision."

One Thirty BPM- "Memphis is a little record that sounds massive ....Memphis is a truly lovely album, one that can transport even the most cynical of grizzled old folks back to the glory days of their youth, and a very promising start to a band’s career."

Lincoln Journal Star- ""Magic Kids have created some magical, gorgeous classic pop here, one of the most pleasant and engaging surprises I've heard in months."

Magic Kids Memphis out NOW (Cassette + Symphony + Dates)

Magic Kids' pop-odyssey MEMPHIS hits the streets today. We're celebrating the occasion on a few fronts. For those of you all over the world, we pressed up a very limited edition surprise version of the album on Cassette. It's limited to 250 copies to be sold at a few future shows, but for the time being, you can purchase the tape (along with CD/LP) until it runs out on the True Panther and Matador stores. Get an instant mp3 download of the record with order as well.

For those of you in Memphis, the band are celebrating the album's release with a really special one-time performance alongside the Memphis Youth Symphony. Memphis is flipping out about the event, a benefit for MYS and a special way for the band to capture the more baroque elements of the record in a way that's difficult to on the road.  You can read about it here, here and here. Supposedly the Levitt Shell is where Elvis played some of his first shows. YES!

For those of you in the rest of the country, the band are embarking on basically a 3-month world tour that starts out with a tour of Southern independent record stores, TOMORROW. Can't stop wont stop.

Glasser- Home (mp3) from Ring

Glasser's Ring is arriving in our hands September 28th but for now, here is the first taste of Ring entitled "Home". The song remains in line with the Glasser we've heard before, eclectic and beat-driven with instrumental melodies often driven by Cameron's own voice. But there is a depth to both the arrangement and recording which somehow makes the song simultaneously intimate and explosive.

Magic Kids to perform with the Memphis Youth Symphony - "Memphis" live in Memphis!

Next Tuesday August 24th, to celebrate the release of Magic Kids' debut album Memphis, the band will perform selections from the album live with the Memphis Youth Symphony at the legendary Levitt Shell in, you guessed it, Memphis. We're told Elvis played his first show at the Levitt Shell (but we can't remember who told us).

This is Memphis the way it was meant to be heard (and you can hear it how it actually sounds at the band's MySpace where the album is streaming).

Admission to the concert is $5, all of which goes directly to the Memphis Youth Symphony Program. Doors are at 6:30, and the show starts at 7:30.

Magic Kids "Superball" (mp3) + More Tour Dates

We've said it before, and we'll say it again. Magic Kids are serious about the craft and composition of rock music. Superball, off of their debut record Memphis out 8/24, demonstrates this incredibly. Using the tools they sharpened in their old D.I.Y. bands, The Barbaras and Girls of the Gravitron, they set out to do something classic: take the simple and skeletal structures of rock and garage songs and build into pop epics. The horns, strings and synths are not trim or embellishments but crucial components of their unique compositions. You may have heard an early demo of this song on the 7" split with the Smith Westerns but this is the version that defines it. We hope you find it as immediate and enthralling as we do.

Magic kids also have more new tour dates that will take them across the country with their neighbor and friend, Bosco Delrey. Memphis isn't about mourning an era of music that is gone, rather, adding another chapter to the story and Bosco is a perfect companion for this mission. MEMPHIS EVERYWHERE!

Magic Kids NYC: Let's Go Sailin

Magic Kids
are taking a one-day break from their nationwide tour with Ariel Pink to take us all out on a boat ride around the East River.

On Monday July 26th, we invite you to come sail around the East River with us and the band. We'll be sailing on the SS Half Moon, which can fit a fraction of the number of people that Irving Plaza can (where they'll play the weekend before). It'll be intimate, joyous, sun-drenched fun. We'll be kicking off at 8pm, but boat starts boarding at 7. There's beer and BBQ, and we honestly can't think of anything better than hearing Magic Kids' "Sailin'" played full blast while circling around the Statue of Liberty. USA!

Magic Kids Present MEMPHIS (w/MP3)

True Panther is incredibly excited to announce that on August 24th Magic Kids' debut album Memphis will see the bright, gleaming and summery light of day. Recorded in the Memphis studio of Doug Easley over the course of several months it is an attempt to re-frame the city, not as the home of musical eras long-gone, but a place where crumbling neighborhoods hidden BBQ places, and closed-down roller rinks are all enveloped by a thick summer air, and a sense of MAGIC.

What Magic Kids share with last century's masters- Jeff Lynne, Brian Wilson, Van Dyke Parks--  is a belief in the promise of the pop song; in the ability to take a tiny and simple melodic gem, a small moment of wide-eyed sincerity, and translate it into something that is bursting with life. The arrangements and colors hinted at with their singles on Goner and Fat Possum, are in full bloom on the album. There are touches of late 80s Britpop, the Delphonics' heartbreaking harmonies, ELO's grandeur, and Belle & Sebastian's intimacy. And MEMPHIS. While home to artists that range across genres- the music of the city is honest, robust and joyful- often made by iconoclastic, rebellious and larger-than life musicians. This is the Memphis where Magic Kids were born, where Bennett, Al, Ben, Michael, and Will grew up playing in garage bands, hanging around Goner Records and listening to records. It's also the city that houses the orchestra of musicians they called upon to realize the sound and ambitions planned for this new collection of songs.

Memphis reminds us of some of the first exciting moments of becoming a lifelong music listener. The excitement, sounds, lush harmonies, and celebration. Their music isn't positive because of the difficulties of life, but in spite of them. They are close to our hearts because they believe that no matter what the circumstances are, deliberate hard work and ambition mixed with joyous honesty still make it possible to craft classic, beautiful, and eternal pop music.

This first song "Summer" is a slightly more restrained and nuanced than what you may have heard before. In the words of the band "this song isn't 'fun in the summertime' kind of summer, but more the wistful, fighting-loneliness-with-your-friends kind of summer." We felt like sharing this one because honestly, it's torture watching summer days blaze by without people having this mellow anthem at their disposal. So here we go. Enjoy the summer!

News From the True Panther Universe

[caption id="attachment_8074" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="LOVE IS IN THE AIR"][/caption]

It's snowing like crazy here in NYC but True Panther Sounds remains bundled up, huddled away and working hard. Taking a few precious moments every day to find good youtube videos, but also putting out a bunch of records. Wanted to give y'all the latest update in the True Panther Universe..

This last Tuesday, 3/23, we released two brand new records.

Hunx and His Punx' "Gay Singles"
We initially released a limited vinyl pressing this last year, but after blowing through them we re-pressed it on LP/CD/DA. It now has slightly different cover art, a cd that includes all the videos, better quality vinyl, and a free mp3 download with each record. PLUS it's cheaper than before. The songs are classic glammy, and gay. They've gotten better with each listen. Lookout for national and international tour dates in the next few months.

This is a limited edition single from one of our favorite new bands. Their record is coming out on Rough Trade, but this first single is all ours! It's limited and features an exclusive b-side "Oh Annie", a more plaintive and restrained version of the band. Enjoy!

We're also putting out 3 brand new 12"/digital records on March 9th! New releases from Tanlines, Lemonade, and Janka Nabay. Each record is a totally unique incantation of the dance music spirits- Janka electrified the Bubu dance music of his native Sierra Leone, Lemonade mixed every kind of electronic music from the last 30 years in a big caribbean fruit salad, and Tanlines are making "new music" , coalesced from tropical sounds and restrained house. We're just going to call it all "Yes Wave".

Say Hello to Magic Kids

We're very proud and honored to announce Memphis, Tennessee's Magic Kids as the newest addition to the True Panther family. When we first saw Magic Kids on three different NY stages on three different days last summer, we fell in love. A cacophony of pop music; 6 band members, numerous guitars, violins, horns, keyboards, everyone in summer mode- three different chilly NY audiences melted.Magic Kids make swelling, heartfelt and beautiful pop gems that recall some of our favorite eternal rock melodies but with an intimacy and excitement that is fully theirs. They do something that is increasingly rare these days- take the time and care to to create pure, perfect, romantic and joyful music.

Here's a little clip we put together from footage a friend sent us. They perform live at Gonerfest, lead-singer Bennett talks in a fake-Michael Jackson voice, they record some music, make some hats, eat some food.

To date, the band have released a tremendous single called "Hey Boy" on Goner Records, and have a forthcoming split 7" w/Chicago's Smith Westerns on Fat Possum. They're leaving for a tour with Girls and Smith Westerns TONIGHT (tour dates below), then getting serious in the new Easley Studio in Memphis. Their debut album will be in your hands later this year.
