Mdou Moctar have released a new single and video, "Imouhar", taken from the group’s forthcoming album, 'Funeral For Justice', out May 3rd. A hypnotic rock song building to a feverish crescendo, ‘Imouhar’ calls on the Tuareg people to which the band belong to preserve their Tamasheq language - it's at risk of dying out, and Moctar is one of the few in his community who knows how to write it. "People here are just using French," says Mdou. "They're starting to forget their own language. We feel like in a hundred years no one will speak good Tamasheq, and that's so scary for us." Watch the video, directed by Laura Greenhall above.

In April, the band will return to the US to perform at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival. In June, they will launch US and European headlining tours with festival appearances at Bonnaroo, Green River, Glastonbury, and End of the Road, among others. Find a complete itinerary below

With its quick cuts and upside down tableaus of desiccated pumpkins, giant inflatables and shopping mall escalators, the Los Angeles-set clip is as disorienting as “Psychedelic Orgasm” itself.

(presave/preorder 'The Collective')

Kim Gordon has released “I’m a Man,” the latest track from her second solo album, 'The Collective'. Atop a dark, churning soundscape, Gordon ruminates on the lost role of “traditional masculinity” and the role of capitalism in its demise.

An evocative video for “I’m a Man” premieres today, serving as a perfect visual accompaniment to the song’s expressive lyrics and pulsing sound. It stars Coco Gordon Moore and Conor Fay and was directed by filmmaker Alex Ross Perry.

VIDEO : Water From Your Eyes - "Out There"

"Out There" - directed by Sophia Feuer and Tyler Macri

New York’s Water From Your Eyes closed out 2023 with an avalanche of vastly-deserved praise for their Matador Records debut, 'Everyone’s Crushed', including nods from New York Times, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Vogue, Stereogum, The Guardian, NME, Wired, and many more.

There’s more to come in 2024. Next month, the band will embark on a full US tour with Brighton, UK’s Squid. These performances will formally debut the band’s new quartet lineup, featuring guitarist Al Nardo and drummer Bailey Wollowitz.

And today, you can watch a brand new video for the still-very-fresh 'Everyone’s Crushed' burner, “Out There.” (above)

From video directors Sophia Feur and Tyler Macri:

When we heard “Out There” for the first time, we connected with its intensity, and the feelings of pent-up energy and confinement it inspired. When we got to talking with Rachel and Nate about their vision for the album we sensed an overlap between their music and our visual inclinations as filmmakers; decaying consumer destinations, shopping centers, fluorescent hallways, that sort of thing. Keeping all of that in mind, we decided to use an old family-owned pet store in Queens for our primary location. The animals and well-worn look of things brought the emotion of the song to life for us, and we were able to approach the video in much the same way we do our 16mm documentary work.

The band and filmmakers will be holding a screening party for the video tonight at Alphaville in Brooklyn at 8pm.

Water From Your Eyes will remain on the road through much of the spring, including a US tour with Real Estate and appearances at Kilby Block Party, Primavera Sound, Best Kept Secret, and Wilco’s Solid Sound with further dates to be announced.

Video : Car Seat Headrest - "Sober To Death" (Live)

presave / preorder 'Faces From The Masquerade'

Ahead of the release of new live album 'Faces From The Masquerade' this Friday, December 8th, Car Seat Headrest today share a video of the band performing the song "Sober To Death".

“Another track not originally slated to be a part of this tour – it came up often enough in the polls that it soon got locked in,” says frontman Will Toledo of “Sober To Death,” taken from the album 'Twin Fantasy'. “I think this hushed version gave everyone a welcome chance to breathe. While this video is taken from our performance at the Wiltern in Los Angeles rather than the Brooklyn Steel shows featured in 'Faces From The Masquerade', it captures the same feeling of spontaneity and community that was present throughout the tour.”

The album’s title is a nod to the band’s original tour announcement, which kindly asked audiences to mask up (for obvious reasons) and also invited fans to “accoutre yourself in whatever further costumery you please” for an evening of “music, dancing, and identity loss.” It also alludes to the by now familiar custom-made gas mask worn by frontman Will Toledo at shows, complete with an expressive LED display for eyes. In addition to the group’s four core members - Toledo, guitarist/backing vocalist Ethan Ives, bassist Seth Dalby and drummer Andrew Katz - they were joined on the tour by keyboard player Ben Roth.

New From King Krule - "If Only It Was Warmth"

stream / download "If Only It Was  Warmth"
presave / preorder 'Space Heavy'

King Krule shares a new single and video for “If Only It Was Warmth,” the latest piece of new music from the highly anticipated forthcoming new album 'Space Heavy',

The wistful, stripped-back instrumentation of “If Only It Was Warmth” comes alongside a self-directed music video that sees King Krule journey across vast waters, with a cactus. Along the way, he is confronted by thoughts of love and lost connection that is presented in the form of dark shadows.

“If Only It Was Warmth” follows the announcement of King Krule’s fourth studio album Space Heavy, which was revealed alongside the release of the album’s first single and music video “Seaforth,” directed by Jocelyn Anquetil. Coming 10 years on from his debut album, Space Heavy is a 15-track full-length that inhabits the deepest reaches of the subterranean sonic world that Archy has constructed over the course of his career as King Krule. Written from 2020 to 2022, between London and Liverpool, Space Heavy took shape over the course of commutes between the two cities where Archy Marshall was splitting his time. In this time, Archy found himself fascinated by the notion of “the space between” - the space haunted by dreams of love, touching a narrative of lost connection, losing people and situations to the guillotine of the universe. The result is King Krule at his most articulate; using his years of experience to create a dynamic body of work that reveals something new with every listen.

Recently, King Krule announced an extensive live tour across US, UK, and Europe. Due to popular demand, today he adds additional shows at The Kings Theatre in Brooklyn, London Eventim Apollo, Paradiso in Amsterdam, Vega in Copenhagen, and Trianon in Paris. Tickets for the world tour are on sale now.

Matador Revisionist History Continued : The New Pornographers - 'Electric Version' 20th Anniversary Edition

"The Laws Have Changed" (directed by Blaine Thurier)

This week, Matador Records will celebrate the 20th anniversary of The New
Pornographers’ second full-length, 'Electric Version' – first released May 6, 2003 – with a limited-edition opaque blue vinyl reissue out September 22. Today, the band’s era-appropriate rarity “Turn” – originally a Japan-only bonus track – will make its debut on streaming services. Newly pristine remasters of the “All For Swinging You Around” and “The Laws Have Changed” music videos will also be made available on YouTube.

As for the music: no sophomore slumping to be found here. Back then we wrote, “Withmimpossibly huge hooks and an innate understanding of every pop trick in the book, this follow-up to 2000’s breakthrough Mass Romantic is the most exciting pop record we’ve heard in a long while.” For once, tastemakers of the day shared our enthusiasm. “The
New Pornographers mix the pop purism of the Beach Boys, the power charge of Cheap Trick and the gentle psychedelia of Syd Barrett,” wrote the New York Times, who labeled 'Electric Version', “some of the best pop of the year.”

The New Pornographers have dates planned throughout the spring and fall, touring songs from their just-released ninth album, 'Continue as a Guest' (Merge). Regarding the new record, Rolling Stone called it, "an LP that delivers its vivid emotional payoff in subtle gestures...the results can be magisterial." Find a complete itinerary below.

Coming July 7 : Lifeguard - 'Crowd Can Talk / 'Dressed In Trenches'

Formed in 2019, Lifeguard are Asher Case (bass, vocals), Isaac Lowenstein (drums, percussion), and Kai Slater (guitar, vocals). At its core, Lifeguard is a punk band. Their music is loud and energetic. It’s also, at its core, visceral and hypnotic. For the Chicago-based trio that can include repetition and blasts of speaker cone-shredding feedback. Their songs adeptly balance melody and chaos, rhythm and drone. Hooks and noise are held to the same standard. Both have to stick.

They’re a young band, but they’ve already found a place at the forefront of an important emerging music community in their hometown. They are quite prolific. In just three years, Lifeguard has put out a full-length, two EPs, and two 7” singles.

On July 7, Matador will release ‘Crowd Can Talk / Dressed in Trenches’, a
composite of two EPs by Lifeguard. ‘Crowd Can Talk’ was originally released in the summer of 2022 by Chicago label Born Yesterday, while ‘Dressed in Trenches’ features five brand new and unreleased songs. ‘Crowd Can Talk / Dressed in Trenches’ will be made available on vinyl for the first time (A and B-sides of a 12”) and also on CD.

'Crowd Can Talk' and 'Dressed in Trenches' are closely related. They were recorded in separate sessions, but at the same studio (Electrical Audio) and with the same engineer (Mike Lust) and within the space of 12 months. Each finds the band refining its voice –honing songs that are succinct, hooky, and propulsive. There's a newly disciplined attention to detail. Lifeguard write together through collaboration and improvisation, but they’ve learned to streamline their sound, to make each hook, beat, and gesture purposeful.

On each record, there are echoes of underground guitar bands from decades past. This is not record-collector music, though. It’s the product of a present-day community. Lifeguard are, first and foremost, a performing band and the songs are written to stand up in that moment.

“More than old records – before that, before anything – we’re influenced by live shows and people around us,” explains Slater. “The inspiration comes from playing shows with people and having that mind-blown moment of seeing some friend play at Schubas or Book Club,” adds Lowenstein. “It’s happening on these tiny little scales of seeing kids play live and [knowing] this is something new and interesting.”

LP Tracklist :

‘Crowd Can Talk’
1. New Age (I’ve Got A)
2. I Know I Know
3. Fifty Seven
4. Typecast

‘Dressed in Trenches’
1. 17-18 Lovesong
2. Alarm
3. Ten Canisters (OFB)
4. Shutter Shutter
5. Tell Me When

Coming June 9 : King Krule - 'Space Heavy'

"Seaforth".
Video directed by Jocelyn Anquetil

Following a run of sold-out intimate shows as part of his recent SHHH Tour, Archy Marshall announces 'Space Heavy', the fourth studio album under his King Krule alias, due June 9th . Coming 10 years on from his debut album, 'Space Heavy' presents King Krule at his most articulate; using his years of experience to create a dynamic body of work that reveals something new with every listen.

The album’s first single, “Seaforth,” arrives today with an endearing music video directed by visual artist and previous collaborator Jocelyn Anquetil and starring King Krule. The dreamlike, stripped-back melody of “Seaforth” soundtracks a visual that transports us into the sleeping mind of King Krule to be immersed in the adventures of two golden retrievers; a father and his puppy.

Written from 2020 to 2022, between London and Liverpool, 'Space Heavy' took shape over the course of commutes between the two cities where Archy Marshall was splitting his time. Befitting an album quite literally written on the commute between the two places he called home, Archy found himself fascinated by the notion of “the space between” - the space haunted by dreams of love, touching a narrative of lost connection, losing people and situations to the guillotine of the universe. Once written by Archy, the music was developed by frequent collaborator and producer Dilip Harris and long-time band mates Ignacio Salvadores (saxophonist), George Bass (drummer), James Wilson (bass guitarist) and Jack Towell (guitarist).

The result is a 15-track full-length by the musical polymath that inhabits the deepest reaches of the subterranean sonic world that Archy has constructed over the course of his career as King Krule. In it you hear a generational artist stepping into the height of their artistic powers – the auteurism apparent on his debut '6 Feet Beneath The Moon', the shapeshifting sonic palette of 'The OOZ', the primality of 'Man Alive!' and the raw vulnerability expressed on 'You Heat Me Up, You Cool Me Down' all coalesce into a wizened, dynamic body of work that reveals new elements with each listen. In line with Archy’s interest in the space between, it is an album wherein the negative space demands the same attention as the positive space. If one is willing to wade into the mire the reward is rich.

‘Space Heavy’ Tracklist
1. Flimsier
2. Pink Shell
3. Seaforth
4. That Is My Life, That Is Yours
5. Tortoise Of Independency
6. Empty Stomach Space Cadet
7. Flimsy
8. Hamburgerphobia
9. From The Swamp
10. Seagirl
11. Our Vacuum
12. Space Heavy
13. When Vanishing
14. If Only It Was Warmth
15. Wednesday Overcast

Water From Your Eyes - "True Life"

"True Life", video by Sabrina Nichols

Out May 26, ‘Everyone’s Crushed’ is the Matador Records debut from Brooklyn duo Water From Your Eyes. Today, watch the animated video for the album’s second single, "True Life," which teams ping-ponging guitar riffs with drop-tuned bass and an unexpected shoutout to Neil Young.
“‘True Life’ is our Neil Young-inspired quasi-nu metal stomp,” explains the band. “It is also intended to be our ‘Short Skirt / Long Jacket.’ The bridge was initially meant to contain lyrics from ‘Cinnamon Girl,’ but Neil Young’s lawyers wouldn’t let us use them. Now they are about how Neil Young wouldn’t let us use his words. The rest of the song deals with life and assorted complications of the material world.”

video by Curtis Godino / Drippy Eye Projections

Ahead of Friday's release of the new album, ‘This Stupid World’, Yo La Tengo have released the sprawling album opener “Sinatra Drive Breakdown”. Referencing the Hoboken waterfront boulevard, “Sinatra Drive Breakdown” is driven by hypnotic rhythm and spontaneous bursts of guitar, as the band intones, “I see clearly how it ends / I see the moon rise as the sun descends”.

The band embark on a tour of the US next week, followed by UK and European shows in April and May, with many of the dates sold out. The full  itinerary is below.
