Queens of the Stone Age - "Carnavoyuer" / June 15 MIDNIGHT CLUB

(presave / preorder 'In Times New Roman...')

Still reeling from the ecstatic reaction to the recently released “Emotion Sickness,” a triumphant return that "finds them at their sinister, bar-band-on-acid best” per New York Magazine, Queens of the Stone Age now unveil “Carnavoyeur,” the latest offering from their epic eighth album, 'In Times New Roman…'

In contrast to its predecessor, “Carnavoyeur” finds QOTSA weaving more subtle shades of sinister: Mesmerizing washes of strings cascade atop the band’s trademark rock solid foundation, while Joshua Homme’s mellifluent vocals swaddle the listener with their warm and all too familiar tones of acceptance and resignation: “When there’s nothing I can do, I smile…” While the stunning, honeyed melodies of “Carnavoyeur” are undeniably, well, really pretty, this is still Queens of the Stone Age, and there’s no shortage of viscera-rumbling drums and bass or spine-chilling guitar interplay.

'In Times New Roman…' will be available across all platforms on June 16th via Matador Records. On the eve of release fans are invited to ring in the album’s release at MIDNIGHT CLUB parties taking place at record shops and pubs across 23 countries. The MIDNIGHT CLUB starts at 11pm June 15th and will feature giveaways, exclusive merch including limited edition colored vinyl, and—in a few select locations—signed merchandise and ticket giveaways. MIDNIGHT CLUB will provide the QOTSA faithful with a first chance to hear In Times New Roman… in its entirety, amongst friends, family and of course appropriate levels of bacchanalia.

out today : Water From Your Eyes - 'Everyone's Crushed'

stream/purchase 'Everyone's Crushed'

Water From Your Eyes have released their new album and Matador debut ‘Everyone’s Crushed’. Across the record's 9 tracks, Rachel Brown (they/them) and Nate Amos (he/him) find silliness and fatalism dancing in a frantic lockstep, using heart palpitating rhythms and absurdist, deadpan lyrics to convey stories of personal and societal unease. Described by Brown as Water From Your Eyes’ most collaborative record ever, it’s a swollen contusion of an album: experimental pop music that’s pretty and violent, raw and indelible.

They are currently supporting Interpol throughout their UK dates. In June, they’ll embark on a run of east coast headline shows, followed in the fall by a west coast run with Melody’s Echo Chamber. The band are also confirmed for Summerstage in Central Park this July,  Way Out West, Lowlands, and Greenman Festivals across Europe in August, and Pitchfork Festival in London, Paris and Berlin this November. A complete list of upcoming dates can be found below.

New From King Krule - "If Only It Was Warmth"

stream / download "If Only It Was  Warmth"
presave / preorder 'Space Heavy'

King Krule shares a new single and video for “If Only It Was Warmth,” the latest piece of new music from the highly anticipated forthcoming new album 'Space Heavy',

The wistful, stripped-back instrumentation of “If Only It Was Warmth” comes alongside a self-directed music video that sees King Krule journey across vast waters, with a cactus. Along the way, he is confronted by thoughts of love and lost connection that is presented in the form of dark shadows.

“If Only It Was Warmth” follows the announcement of King Krule’s fourth studio album Space Heavy, which was revealed alongside the release of the album’s first single and music video “Seaforth,” directed by Jocelyn Anquetil. Coming 10 years on from his debut album, Space Heavy is a 15-track full-length that inhabits the deepest reaches of the subterranean sonic world that Archy has constructed over the course of his career as King Krule. Written from 2020 to 2022, between London and Liverpool, Space Heavy took shape over the course of commutes between the two cities where Archy Marshall was splitting his time. In this time, Archy found himself fascinated by the notion of “the space between” - the space haunted by dreams of love, touching a narrative of lost connection, losing people and situations to the guillotine of the universe. The result is King Krule at his most articulate; using his years of experience to create a dynamic body of work that reveals something new with every listen.

Recently, King Krule announced an extensive live tour across US, UK, and Europe. Due to popular demand, today he adds additional shows at The Kings Theatre in Brooklyn, London Eventim Apollo, Paradiso in Amsterdam, Vega in Copenhagen, and Trianon in Paris. Tickets for the world tour are on sale now.

Interpol - "Passenger" (Jeff Parker Interpolation)

Last month, Interpol launched ‘Interpolations,’ a series of collaborations that finds songs from  ‘The Other Side Of Make-Believe’, reworked by artistsDaniel Avery, Makaya McCraven, Jeff Parker, Jesu, and Water From Your Eyes.

Today, you can hear the second installment, an interpolation of “Passenger” created by guitarist and composer Jeff Parker. “When asked to make a remix for Interpol, I was intrigued and initially excited to make something from the drum breaks on the original version of “Passenger,”” explains. Parker. “However, the muse had other plans for me, and it went in a different direction.”

Liz Phair - 'Exile in Guyville' 30th Anniversary Tour

Purchase / Stream 'Exile in Guyville'

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Liz Phair’s beloved debut record, 'Exile In Guyville,' which was first released on June 22, 1993 via Matador.

An 18-track double album loosely framed as a song-by-song reply to The Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main St., Exile In Guyville was dubbed a classic upon arrival. The album’s profile has only risen in the ensuing years. It is now regarded as an iconic work and a feminist landmark, recently ranked #4 in Pitchfork’s “Best 150 Albums of the 1990s” and cracking the top 100 of Rolling Stone’s “Best 500 Albums of All Time.”

This fall, Phair will celebrate the record by launching a full band US tour and performing Exile In Guyville in its entirety (along with some additional hits) at some of the largest venues of her career. Pre-sales will begin on Wednesday, May 17. All dates will be on sale to the public at 10am local time on Friday, May 19.

Spoon - 'Memory Dust' EP Announcement / "Sugar Babies" Out Today

(photo: Pooneh Ghana)

Stream "Sugar Babies"

Pre-save 'Memory Dust' EP

Out digitally on June 13, 'Memory Dust' features three new Spoon recordings – the original songs “Sugar Babies” and “Silver Girl,” plus a cover of Bo Diddley’s “She’s Fine, She’s Mine.”

These aren’t b-sides. The recordings began during sessions for Spoon’s Grammy-nominated album, Lucifer on the Sofa, but were left unfinished. Following the record’s release and at the tail end of a year-plus of intense touring, the band came back to the sketches with renewed energy and fresh perspective. The completed tracks retain a touch of Lucifer’s character – rock ’n roll music, played in real-time – but stretch out hypnotically. Listen to “Sugar Babies” HERE.

In June, Spoon will travel to Europe for dates supporting The Black Keys in the UK, France, and Germany. In August, the band will join Weezer in the US for a number of west coast shows. Find a complete itinerary below.

Coming June 16 : Queens of the Stone Age - 'In Times New Roman...'

(Production by Worldfare, Directed by Tony Wolski)

(presave / preorder 'In Times New Roman...')
(stream / download "Emotion Sickness")

Queens of the Stone Age have announced their long-awaited 8th studio album, 'In Times New Roman…' out June 16th on Matador.

'In Times New Roman..'. is raw, at times brutal and not recommended for the faint of heart. And yet, it’s perhaps the most beautiful and definitely the most rewarding album in their epic discography. Founder Joshua Homme's most acerbic lyrics to date are buoyed by the instantly identifiable QOTSA sonic signature, expanded and embellished with new and unprecedented twists in virtually every song. With 'In Times New Roman…' we see that sometimes one needs to look beneath scars and scabs to see beauty, and sometimes the scabs and scars are the beauty.

Feeling a bit out of place, and having difficulty finding music they could relate to, the members of QOTSA did as they are wont to do: In Times New Roman… is the sound of a band creating the music its own members
want to hear, while giving the rest of us a sonic forum in which to congregate. “The world’s gonna end in a month or two," sings Homme, begging the question: What do you want to do with the time you’ve got left?
Homme, Troy Van Leeuwen, Dean Fertita, Michael Shuman and Jon Theodore may not be able to save us, but they’re giving us a place to ride it out.

The first offering from 'In Times New Roman…' is “Emotion Sickness,” which wraps listeners in a warm blanket of patented QOTSA hypnotic choruses and off kilter grooves—punctuated by tinges of psychic
turbulence. The past few years have been tough on everyone, and it’s no secret the members of QOTSA have endured their share of heartbreak and loss. But who amongst us hasn’t dealt with a recent bout (or two) of
emotion sickness? A Liam Lynch video for "Emotion Sickness” premieres tomorrow on QOTSA’s YouTube channel.

'In Times New Roman…' was recorded and mixed at Homme’s own Pink Duck (RIP), with additional recording at Shangri-La. The album was produced by Queens of the Stone Age and mixed by Mark Rankin. The album
will be available across all digital platforms and on vinyl and CD on June 16th. Artwork and double LP gatefold packaging designed by long time collaborator Boneface. LP vinyl will be available globally in black, green, red, silver and blue. All formats are available for pre-order here. The track list is as follows:

Obscenery
Paper Machete
Negative Space
Time & Place
Made to Parade
Carnavoyeur
What the Peephole Say
Sicily
Emotion Sickness
Straight Jacket Fitting

Colored vinyl available at the QOTSA / Matador Webstores and at record shops everywhere.

Water From Your Eyes - "14"

Water From Your Eyes have released a new single and video ‘14,’ the latest preview from their forthcoming album and Matador debut ‘Everyone’s Crushed,’ out May 26th.

A crescendo of swelling strings, pizzicato and electronic drone moving around a cyclical vocal refrain of “How many is 14?,” the band describe the song as “a quasi-serial inkblot signifying submission to personal demons and the realization that change is both necessary and inevitable.” Watch the widescreen black & white video directed by the band’s Rachel Brown HERE.

On the video, Brown says:

“I was largely inspired by “Meshes of the Afternoon”, “Last Year in Marienbad”, and “Spirited Away,” as well as the painting “The Triumph of Baccus” by Diego Velázquez, a favorite of Nate’s. I wanted to capture the feeling of being haunted by one’s own inner turmoils and the act of letting those conflicts go.”

Having just concluded a US tour with Snail Mail, Water From Your Eyes will support Interpol on their UK dates in May. In June, they’ll embark on a run of east coast headline shows, followed in the fall by a west coast run with Melody’s Echo Chamber. The band are also confirmed for Pitchfork Festival in London, Paris and Berlin and November. Find a complete list of upcoming dates below.

Matador Revisionist History Continued : The New Pornographers - 'Electric Version' 20th Anniversary Edition

"All For Swinging You Around" (directed by Blaine Thurier)

"The Laws Have Changed" (directed by Blaine Thurier)

This week, Matador Records will celebrate the 20th anniversary of The New
Pornographers’ second full-length, 'Electric Version' – first released May 6, 2003 – with a limited-edition opaque blue vinyl reissue out September 22. Today, the band’s era-appropriate rarity “Turn” – originally a Japan-only bonus track – will make its debut on streaming services. Newly pristine remasters of the “All For Swinging You Around” and “The Laws Have Changed” music videos will also be made available on YouTube.

(preorder 'Electric Version' on LP / stream 'Electric Version' and "Turn")

As for the music: no sophomore slumping to be found here. Back then we wrote, “Withmimpossibly huge hooks and an innate understanding of every pop trick in the book, this follow-up to 2000’s breakthrough Mass Romantic is the most exciting pop record we’ve heard in a long while.” For once, tastemakers of the day shared our enthusiasm. “The
New Pornographers mix the pop purism of the Beach Boys, the power charge of Cheap Trick and the gentle psychedelia of Syd Barrett,” wrote the New York Times, who labeled 'Electric Version', “some of the best pop of the year.”

The New Pornographers have dates planned throughout the spring and fall, touring songs from their just-released ninth album, 'Continue as a Guest' (Merge). Regarding the new record, Rolling Stone called it, "an LP that delivers its vivid emotional payoff in subtle gestures...the results can be magisterial." Find a complete itinerary below.

Coming July 7 : Lifeguard - 'Crowd Can Talk / 'Dressed In Trenches'

"17-18 Lovesong"

stream / download "17-18 Lovesong"
presave / preorder 'Crowd Can Talk' / 'Dressed In Trenches'

Formed in 2019, Lifeguard are Asher Case (bass, vocals), Isaac Lowenstein (drums, percussion), and Kai Slater (guitar, vocals). At its core, Lifeguard is a punk band. Their music is loud and energetic. It’s also, at its core, visceral and hypnotic. For the Chicago-based trio that can include repetition and blasts of speaker cone-shredding feedback. Their songs adeptly balance melody and chaos, rhythm and drone. Hooks and noise are held to the same standard. Both have to stick.

They’re a young band, but they’ve already found a place at the forefront of an important emerging music community in their hometown. They are quite prolific. In just three years, Lifeguard has put out a full-length, two EPs, and two 7” singles.

On July 7, Matador will release ‘Crowd Can Talk / Dressed in Trenches’, a
composite of two EPs by Lifeguard. ‘Crowd Can Talk’ was originally released in the summer of 2022 by Chicago label Born Yesterday, while ‘Dressed in Trenches’ features five brand new and unreleased songs. ‘Crowd Can Talk / Dressed in Trenches’ will be made available on vinyl for the first time (A and B-sides of a 12”) and also on CD.

'Crowd Can Talk' and 'Dressed in Trenches' are closely related. They were recorded in separate sessions, but at the same studio (Electrical Audio) and with the same engineer (Mike Lust) and within the space of 12 months. Each finds the band refining its voice –honing songs that are succinct, hooky, and propulsive. There's a newly disciplined attention to detail. Lifeguard write together through collaboration and improvisation, but they’ve learned to streamline their sound, to make each hook, beat, and gesture purposeful.

On each record, there are echoes of underground guitar bands from decades past. This is not record-collector music, though. It’s the product of a present-day community. Lifeguard are, first and foremost, a performing band and the songs are written to stand up in that moment.

“More than old records – before that, before anything – we’re influenced by live shows and people around us,” explains Slater. “The inspiration comes from playing shows with people and having that mind-blown moment of seeing some friend play at Schubas or Book Club,” adds Lowenstein. “It’s happening on these tiny little scales of seeing kids play live and [knowing] this is something new and interesting.”

LP Tracklist :

‘Crowd Can Talk’
1. New Age (I’ve Got A)
2. I Know I Know
3. Fifty Seven
4. Typecast

‘Dressed in Trenches’
1. 17-18 Lovesong
2. Alarm
3. Ten Canisters (OFB)
4. Shutter Shutter
5. Tell Me When
