Lucy Dacus - "Home Again" / "It's Too Late"

"Home Again", live at End Of The Road's Piano State

Lucy Dacus’ third studio album 'Home Video', released last year on Matador, was one of 2021’s most celebrated records and solidified her as “one of the best songwriters of her generation” (Rolling Stone). Today, Dacus returns to honor one of the best songwriters of generations past: Carole King. Originally available exclusively on physical 7” as part of Third Man Records’ Carole King Home Again vault package, out earlier this year, Lucy Dacus’ covers of Tapestry’s “Home Again” and “It’s Too Late” are now available for all to hear. As told to The Guardian, Dacus recounts, “When I listened to 'Tapestry' from my mom’s CD collection, I was young enough that it didn’t register as good or bad – it just defined what music sounded like to me, and it’s still a foundation of how I understand songwriting. She’s clever in the good way – queen of internal rhyme – and I love how her melodies reinforce the tone of the lyrics. She keeps it simple, but that’s what makes it universal.” She adds, “When I was asked to cover a couple of her songs, it was a no brainer. Her work feels like a part of my DNA and I’m grateful for it."

Lucy Dacus - "Partner in Crime" / "Believe" (Cher) - Spotify Singles

(photo: Ebru Yildiz)

Stream "Partner in Crime" / "Believe" (Cher)

Stream / Purchase Home Video

Today, fresh off her performance at Pitchfork Music Festival, Lucy Dacus unveils her contribution to the Spotify Singles series: a reworked studio rendition of Home Video standout, “Partner in Crime,” and a cover of Cher’s “Believe,” a “huge, expansive, beautiful, heart-pumping, excitement-inducing song,” says Dacus, and “iconic for its use of auto-tune.” Despite this distinct use of auto-tune in both “Believe” and the original “Partner in Crime,” Dacus’ new versions remove the auto-tune and scale back the production, bringing each songwriter’s prowess to the forefront. “I feel like some of my favorite lyrics that I’ve written are in ‘Partner in Crime’ and maybe they aren’t as noticeable because the effect takes you out of it a little bit,” Dacus says. “So, I just wanted to strip it bare and showcase the song for what it is without any tricky production moves.”

“‘Partner in Crime’ was partially inspired by ‘Believe,’ so I thought it’d be nice to pair them together. I love Cher’s voice and how low it gets. The timbre of her voice is so unique, you can recognize it anywhere. Even with the autotune, you can tell that it’s Cher and nobody else. But, on our cover, taking away the autotune, I feel like you can tell that the structure of the song is very special and I did feel myself accidentally wanting to become Cher when I was doing vocal takes. It could never happen, but I love a low voiced pop legend.”

Lucy Dacus released 'Home Video' last year, solidifying her place as one of music’s best storytellers, with a remarkable showing on year-end lists. After a series of flyers appeared in several US cities last week with tear-off tabs for a “Kissing Lessons” hotline, a stream of callers to the number then reported being able to hear a new song by Dacus. No longer requiring a phone, “Kissing Lessons” is now available as a single for all to hear. It is accompanied by a video directed by Mara Palena. Complete with hand-drawn hearts and Polaroids, “Kissing Lessons” is another gem mined from Dacus’ childhood in Richmond, Virginia. It was recorded and mixed during the Home Video sessions, and stood out with its sweet and relatable reflection of childhood infatuation as Dacus sings atop infectious guitars, “We’d take turns being seduced // Imagining the day it would come into use // Imagining the day we’d start breaking hearts // And taking names.”

“Kissing Lessons” and “Thumbs Again” will be released as a 7” on June 3rd. The 7” is available for pre-order now.

Next week, Dacus kicks off a US tour where she will play many cities not yet visited in support of Home Video, and a few rescheduled shows from the fall. Additionally, after selling out three Brooklyn Steels last year, Dacus announces a headline performance at New York City’s SummerStage in Central Park on Thursday, July 21st. Tickets go on sale this Friday, February 4th at 12pm Eastern.

Lucy Dacus - "Thumbs Again"

(photo : Marin Leong)

Before there was news of 'Home Video', an album which captured the complexities of Lucy Dacus’ formative years growing up in Richmond, VA, leading her to be named “one of the best songwriters of her generation” (Rolling Stone), Lucy presented the long-awaited “Thumbs” to the world. Debuted on tour in 2018 while on the road with boygenius, “Thumbs” became a fan favorite, immediately and deeply impacting audiences: “Depending on what you’ve been through in your life, those words might leave you weeping in public, too,” commented Stereogum. Lucy now releases a full-band version of the arresting original, titled “Thumbs Again.” Here, the simple instrumental backbone of “Thumbs” is filled out with electric guitar, synth, and drums and is how many have heard the song on Lucy’s recent tour.

Following last week’s performance on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon", Lucy has announced a winter 2022 North American tour, including rescheduled dates for five shows. These new dates follow an incredible fall tour that featured three nights of sold out shows at both New York’s Brooklyn Steel and Washington DC’s 9:30 Club, and precede her UK and European tour in support of 'Home Video'.

VIDEO : Lucy Dacus - "Brando"

:

Animation by Carson McNamara

Lucy Dacus continues her hot (and heavy) streak in support of her widely praised new album, 'Home Video', released just over two months ago. When the album’s third single, “Brando,” was released, a contest was announced inviting fans to send in a video of themselves dancing, skateboarding, ice skating, etc. to the song. Now and over 100 submissions later, the “Brando” video is being presented to the world. It’s a fun, lighthearted video which stitches together this footage and celebrates Lucy’s incredible fans. “Big thank you to everyone who submitted,” says Dacus. “These videos brought me a lot of joy and made me feel more connected to the song and all of you."

Lucy kicks off her almost entirely sold out North American headline tour tomorrow night in her hometown of Richmond, Virginia. where many of the stories shared on Home Video took place. There are now back-to-back shows in Portland, Chicago and Philadelphia, and three nights of shows in Brooklyn and Washington, D.C.

Lucy Dacus - Tiny Desk (Home) Concert (NPR)

Earlier today, NPR premiered Lucy Dacus' Tiny Desk (Home) session, filmed by Spang TV in a classroom at the high school she attended in Richmond. This location aptly aligns with one of Home Video’s themes - capturing that specific moment in time growing up where emotions and relationships start becoming more complex. Backed by her regular collaborator Jacob Blizard (lead guitar), plus Dominic Angelella (bass guitar), Ricardo Lagomasino (drums), and Sarah Goldstone (keys, background vocal), Dacus intimately presents four songs off of Home Video - “Brando,” and “VBS,” plus the first on camera performances of “Going Going Gone” and “Thumbs” (solo).

A number of dates on Dacus' Autumn tour are sold out, though several have been added (see below), including new shows in Seattle, Bozeman, Denver, Washington DC and additional nights in Chicago and Philadelphia.
