Stephen Malkmus And The Jicks live on WNYC Soundcheck today

[caption id="attachment_15133" align="alignnone" width="475" caption="(photo by Larry Hirshowitz)"][/caption]

It seems like only yesterday that Stephen Malkmus And The Jicks wowed New York City's Webster Hall with a collection of old favorites and instant classics from their new album, Mirror Traffic. Before they say goodbye to the Big Apple, they'll be appearing live on WNYC's popular Soundcheck program to play some tunes and chat with host John Schaefer (no word yet on whether SM will be asked to participate in today's "Smackdown" discussion of the later years of R.E.M.). The fun starts at 2:35 EDT, and can be experienced on New York's radio waves at 93.9FM or online at WNYC.org.

Those of you who will accept no substitute for the live experience can take solace in the fact that there are plenty more upcoming Jicks shows happening this month and next.

It's been nearly a year since Matador's recently announced signing from Austin, TX, The Young played somewhere within shouting distance of label HQ.  As such, some ofus  thought it was an appropriate time to force the reclusive quartet * into playing 4 shows in 3 days.  Details can be found below ;  The Young's first Matador full-length and 2nd album overall is tentatively scheduled for the first half of 2012.   (also - they're playing Austin's Emo's inside room on October 22 with Pierced Arrows and Don't)

Friday, Nov. 11 - Cake Shop, NYC NY
Saturday, Nov. 12 - Maxwell's, Hoboken, NJ, 3pm matinee (with The Sonics)
Saturday, Nov. 12 - Union Pool, Brooklyn, NY, 10pm (with Endless Boogie)
Sunday, Nov. 13 - Kung Fu Necktie, Philadelphia, PA (with Office Of Future Plans, Bells)

(* - this is the first and last time we'll ever refer to this band --- or anyone else --- as a "reclusive quartet")

The New York Times brings us the second video from Father, Son, Holy Ghost, just about the best record anyone has heard this year (it's available for purchase).

On the heels of the excellent and epic "Vomit" video, this is the other side of the Christopher Owens coin, as conceived by Girls' own Chet JR White, who co-directed the video with Ivan Shumaker (Stu Barnes produced):

Boston's #2 Daily Newspaper's Right To Annoy Tom Scholz Upheld By Judge

(funny, when you type "Boston the band" into Google Image Search, the above Negative FX jpg comes up pretty close to the top of the entries)

Though I have MORE THAN A FEELING (sorry) we've not seen the last of this dispute, the Boston Herald's Joe Dwinell reported yesterday a Superior Court judge rejected claims by Boston guitarist/founder Tom Scholz the Herald had defamed the one-time AOR radio fixture.

Scholz is suing the Herald over three 2007 Inside Track columns that he claims imply he drove fellow band member Brad Delp to commit suicide in March 2007. In May of 2010, the Herald published several articles reporting on Scholz’s lawsuit and the parties’ respective litigation positions in it. Scholz claimed that the Herald’s May 2010 articles had defamed him and caused him emotional distress.

Massachusetts Superior Court Judge John C. Cratsley previously ruled that the Herald’s articles accurately reported on the litigation. After the case was reviewed by an Appeals Court judge, Scholz argued that the articles were “unfair” and published with “malice.”

However, after review, Judge Cratsley reiterated that the articles were not only accurate, but that Scholz had “come up empty handed” in presenting evidence that the articles were unfair or published for a reason other than to inform the public.

Amateur rock historians will recall that Scholz is no stranger to litigation, and a few years back, Boston sued the now-defunct Artemis label alleging the band's 'Corporate America' album was poorly marketed and promoted. Had any legal precedent been established, there's no telling how many Matador artists from the early 1990's would have a case.

Well, I won't tell you more than that. Pitchfork debuts the clip, accompanied by an interview with A.C. Newman himself. Watch the video (directed by Jon Busby):
