SHLOHMO - 'Dark Red' out April 7, Stream New Single "Buried"

In Dean's words:

Dark Red is the second full-length album from Shlohmo, aka 25 year-old Los Angeles native Henry Laufer. The record is an uncanny marriage of his ever-evolving, richly textured sound with shades of ’90s IDM, R&B, cassette-tape Jungle, and, in an unexpected turn, sludge metal. “It sounds like if Electric Wizard tried to make an R&B record,” he says, “or Boards of Canada meets Burzum by the River Styx.”

Shlohmo’s music thus far exists in the poles between the subtly textured tracks of Bad Vibes and the booming sinister synths and hi-hats of his production work and remixes (such as his split EP with Jeremih, Banks’ “Brain”, remixes for Drake + The Weeknd). Dark Red utilizes Shlohmo’s existing palate but also mines the noises and imperfections inherent in analog production and naturally damaged sounds. Side-stepping current trends that lean towards pristine, computer-generated production, Dark Red explores natural distortion, fuzz and noise as compositional tools, intentionally distressing sounds to echo the feeling of the icy menace and emotional charge found on early black metal tapes. The result is a deeply personal listen, Shlohmo’s boldest statement yet.

This isn’t an album which fades into the shadows. The eerie, squalling synths of “Ten Days of Falling” usher in a world of phosphorescent disintegration and decay; from the looming claustrophobia of new single “Buried” to the minimalist pindrop orchestration of “Remains” and the carnal hum of “Ditch”, there is palpable anxiety and discord. “Relentless” and “Slow Descent” explore an internal sense of pain and sorrow that adds a stark emotional charge to the record.

Laufer explains:

“When I started working on Dark Red about two and a half years ago, I had just moved back to LA and built a small studio in my apartment, mostly with my dad’s old gear from the 80s. I had just lost some people close to me and was dealing with another loved one’s health issues. I was all over the place mentally, and I think it reflects in this record whether I like it or not.

The only thing I did know going into it, was that I wanted this one to be loud, and not just loud but really really f***ing loud. I wanted the sound of the thing to be devastating and violent. Recordings that force you to feel something even if that something isn’t good. I’m proud to have made something polarizing, a record that’s strong and undeniable even in its moments of pure anxiety and confusion. It’s tragic and painful at times, but that’s all part of it and I want that to be heard and felt. You don’t have to like it, just listen to it.”

FEBRUARY 15: EMA 'I Wanna Destory' at MOMA PS1

Last September, Erika M. Anderson released 'Back To The Void', a Hive Zine that delved deep into the writing process of The Future's Void in an incredibly vivid and unique way. Another expansion of the album will come with 'I Wanna Destroy.'

I Wanna Destroy is a Virtual Reality environment built in collaboration with Portland-based developer Zach Krausnick and the software company Chroma. This virtual world uses 3D game mechanics to articulate experiences not often explored in mainstream gaming; including guilt, nostalgia, family, and transcendence. Audience members explore a changing 3D environment, while their experiences are projected before the entire audience. EMA providse a live score, working to meld semi-acoustic instruments and lyrical content into a digital world.

ALGIERS - "But She Was Not Flying", February NYC Dates

Algiers fuses the rapturous call and response of millenarian gospel, the bellowing urgency of 60s protest soul and the unhinged ferocity of no wave into a visceral music. With an aesthetic informed by sonic revolutionaries from Nina Simone to Suicide, The Minutemen to PJ Harvey, these three émigrés of the American Deep South conjure dead sounds to life in frightening new directions.

“It’s dark stuff, but good grief they’ve got soul” - Marc Burrows, The Guardian

Algiers' self-titled debut album is coming later in 2015 from Matador.

VIDEO: Tobias Jesso Jr. "How Could You Babe" (directed by Grant Singer)

In Dean's Words:
Happy to share a new song from GOON by Tobias Jesso Jr. “How Could You Babe” was produced by Chet “JR” White (formerly of Girls), and Tobias’ first official music video, directed by Grant Singer.

Tobias has already been picked by Time, Pitchfork, Fader, Stereogum + more as an Artist to Watch in 2015. Pigeons & Planes called him “one of the most consistently impressive new acts in music.” He just played two sold out shows with Foxygen at The Roxy in LA, and will embark on his first ever headline tour in March. Full dates and tickets for all dates below.

A few words from Tobias about “How Could You Babe”:

I didn’t listen to any 70?s music when I was young or even until I heard it’s what people thought my music most sounded like. When I was younger I listened to things like the Fugees and Aretha, along with all the other radio hits of the time. My favorite song was ‘give me one reason’ by Tracy Chapman, I remember going to listen to it in the vegetable section at the grocery store because they played it all the time and I didn’t have it on tape until I got lucky one day and snagged it off the radio. How Could You Babe was written around the chorus, I just came up with the line and then wrote more words in that theme, it was an experience I had gone through but it wasn’t something I thought I needed to say or get out, it just came out that way.

‘Goon’ is out March 17th. The first two tracks from the album “Hollywood” and “How Could You Babe” are available instantly with iTunes pre-order.

R.I.P. Kim Fowley, King of the Night Time World

I'm sure many of us had mixed feelings reading about Kim Fowley's passing this week. Focusing on the good (of which there was a LOT), here's something I only just found out about: his proteges the Hollywood Stars recorded Fowley's composition "King of the Night Time World" three years before KISS got there, and as much as we all love Destroyer (and we really do), the LA quartet slay NYC this time out. CHECK IT OUT and pay respect to Kim.

Stream : Belle and Sebastian - 'Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance' Album Premiere Via NPR First Listen

"At times like these," declared The Mail On Sunday's Graeme Thomson, "you realize that if Belle and Sebastian cease to exist they would create a vacuum no other band would be capable of filling." Man, what a horrible thing to contemplate! Last night at midnight, NPR First Listen offered a premiere of the new Belle and Sebastian album, 'Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance'. NPR's Steve Thompson took a different tact, instead of scaring the daylights out of us, he argues 'Girls In Peacetime', "feels personal, lived-in and universal," ("with 12 songs stretching out for more than an hour, 'Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance' allows Belle And Sebastian's music to shimmer and breathe").

While's there's more tour dates forthcoming, today we can share some photos of the deluxe vinyl box set edition of 'Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance' as well as the 5 badges that come with any orders that come direct from The Matador Store ;
