Video : Chelsea Light Moving - Live At Austin's Mellow Johnny's (courtesy KEXP)

A fortnight ago, Chelsea Light Moving played a ridiculous number of Austin shows before and during SXSW in all manner of settings, none of 'em more hospitable than the warehouse district's Mellow Johnny's bicycle emporium. Proprietor Lance Armstrong failed to make an appearance, but we're told he was contacted mid-set for consultation on the shop's "you break it, you bought it policy" (on the advice of our lawyers, we're not showing the footage of Thurston breaking what was apparently a very expensive bike, but we'll stress it was AN ACCIDENT). Thanks to KEXP for the footage.

Majical Cloudz' Devon Welsh explains of 'Impersonator'

In the last few years there’s been a massive explosion of amazing music made with computers, samplers and other electronic equipment. The possibilities became nearly endless and musicians indulged those possibilities. I love that kind of music but it also started to overwhelm me. I wasn’t cut out for the maximalist expressions of that style. So I took a break from music, and when I started again it was to make music that barely existed and felt like stillness more than movement. Where the songs could be more about humanness. I love all forms of electronic music, techno, house, rave, hip-hop, but I never want to feel like
the music I’m making is just about stylistic play. The easiest way for me to do that is try to make something without obvious movement; where the music isn’t overstuffed sonically or referentially, it’s emptied out as much as possible. So the vision for Impersonator was to communicate a lot with as little as possible. It’s not meant to energize and turn you out to the world, it’s meant to do the opposite; it’s more like a cocoon.

'Impersonator''s expressive power and swagger belie its extremely minimal music. These are intensely lyrical songs about death, patience, family, friendship, and desire, with Welsh’s rich vocals atop Matthew Otto Kolaitis' quiet looped waves of white noise, filtered synths and sparse thuds.

The album is available for pre-order now on all formats at the Matador store & iTunes.

This Spring, Majical Cloudz will be touring with Youth Lagoon in North America & a few headlining dates in Europe.

Dominican food

(photo: Village Voice)

There used to be an incredible Dominican restaurant in New York on 14th Street just west of Seventh Ave, called Sucelt Coffee Shop. It was a family-run hole in the wall serving up some of the most delicious food in the city. It closed about five years ago.

Sucelt had an incredible cubano sandwich, great beef empanadas, orange juice freshly squeezed to order in a squeezing machine in front of you and insanely cheap, all kinds of stews and beans, luscious sweet fried maduros (plantains), and a deeply complex and spicy homemade agrio de naranja (bitter orange salsa) sitting in plastic dispensers on the counter.

But my favorite was the chicken stew with rice and black beans, pictured above. I've been trying to reverse-engineer it at home. The new and much lauded Latin, Caribbean and Central American cookbook, Gran Cocina Latina, unfortunately does not contain a recipe. Instead I've had to troll blogs and online recipes for pollo guisado, with mixed results.

This chicken stew recipe, from Dominican Flavor, contains some of the odd instructions you get from non-professional recipe writers, such as "bring the oil to a boil." What I got from following the instructions more or less to a T was the following:

It looked good and tasted good, but the meat was too dry, and it certainly wasn't the same as the Sucelt recipe. Not enough tomato, no potato. The beans here were Rancho Gordo's new negro de arbol variety, prepared the simple RG way, and certainly had the right blackness and depth of flavor.

Next up was another non-professional recipe, this time from the Burden Clothing website. The photo certainly looked right, but once again, the recipe suffered from various confusing inconsistencies: potatoes are pictured but not listed in the ingredients; the ingredient list is not in the order called for in the instructions; and there is much vagueness on levels of heat, cooking times, etc. Sometimes vagueness can be a virtue, because it encourages you to experiment more, and in fact this version of the dish came much closer to the ideal.

There were also distinct similarities to the first recipe, such as caramelizing white sugar in the oil before you brown the chicken, which made me think I was getting closer to the real thing. At the same time, it called for adding water to the oil, which maybe is what the first recipe assumed you were doing when it told you to "boil the oil." Adding water and cooking with the lid closed of course results in steaming the meat, and the result was - no surprise - less dry.

The chicken was moist and falling off the bone, there was the distinct green bell pepper aroma in the stew, and the potatoes were perfect. The only problem was that it could have braised/steamed a bit longer, needed a bit more salt, and perhaps a bit more depth of flavor. It could possibly use chicken stock instead of water, or even a dash of Worcestershire sauce (which is apparently genuinely used in Dominican cuisine). I'll be trying that next time.

The beans this time were Rancho Gordo's midnight black beans. The bean recipe this time was Cuban, from Three Guys In Miami. (Black beans are more Cuban; Dominicans normally use red beans, but Sucelt gave you a choice of either one.) I can recommend this recipe unreservedly, though I think I want to use a blacker, denser bean than RG's midnights next time. I subbed red pepper for green pepper.

Kurt Vile - "Never Run Away" debuts on the CW in Philly

Our advertising ninja Blake Thomas forgot to tell any of us (perhaps his mind was elsewhere) but last night Kurt debuted the single version of "Never Run Away" (from the upcoming album Wakin On A Pretty Daze, out April 9) with the cutest little infomercial EVER - it aired on the CW network in Philadelphia. Blake kicked us the file for optimum viewing, but we've also got a rip of the infomercial itself which a Kurt superfan (OK, Philebrity) passed our way:

Coming May 6 : Savages - 'Silence Yourself' LP/CD/digital album

(EDITOR'S NOTE : in the early days of 2012, our esteemed colleague Natalie Judge was (loudly) signing the praises of a London band called Savages. In the months since, we've become equally obsessed with the quartet, partially on the back of a stunning debut 7" and followup live EP on their own Pop Noire label, but also via a succession of performances in the UK and US that were as visceral and exciting as anything we've witnessed in this label's history.  The resulting debut album, 'Silence Yourself'', doesn't merely fulfill the promise of Savages' initial releases, but serves as stark notice we're dealing with a band uniquely inspired, uncannily confident and fully realized in a manner that belies their relatively brief existence. - GC)

“SAVAGES is not trying to give you something you didn’t have already, it is calling within yourself something you buried ages ago, it is an attempt to reveal and reconnect your PHYSICAL and EMOTIONAL self and give you the urge to experience your life differently, your girlfriends, your husbands, your jobs, your erotic life and the place music occupies in your life. Because we must teach ourselves new ways of POSITIVE MANIPULATIONS, music and words are aiming to strike like lightning, like a punch in the face, a determination to understand the WILL and DESIRES of the self."

This album is to be played loud in the foreground.”

Two Sichuanese vegetable dishes with chilli bean paste

Here are two vegetable dishes from Fuchsia Dunlop's new book, Every Grain Of Rice. I'm linking to the British edition because that's the one I own.

These are both fairly simple and don't call for too many outlandish ingredients, but there's one that is an absolute necessity: chilli bean paste from Pixian. Do not buy the standard brands like Lee Kum Kee, which are Cantonese and have a completely different flavor. Look for the word "Pixian" on the label, or the characters ??. Dunlop has written a mini-essay on this subject HERE.

The first is twice-cooked Swiss chard. The chard is blanched, stalks and leaves separately, and later stir-fried in the wok, hence twice-cooked. The seasonings include Pixian bean paste, garlic, ginger, fermented black beans, chopped celery, scallion and cilantro. This is a true vegetarian dish - vegan in fact.

The second dish includes a small amount of meat (1/5 lb ground beef), like many Chinese vegetable recipes. It's simpler to make and focuses more on getting the right degree of wok-sear on the beef and the vegetable. It is "Send the rice down" chopped celery and minced beef, so called because you use it to send the rice down... the ingredients in this one also include Pixian bean paste, of course, plus ginger and Chinkiang (black) vinegar.

Chelsea Light Moving live on KEXP from Mellow Johnny's Bike Shop today

If there's one thing we know you, the Matablog faithful, hate more than anything else, it's hyperbole. And yet here we are in the middle of SXSW, where hyperbole is the norm that inevitably leads to mediocre band after mediocre band being lauded as "killing it," "slaying," or "destroying it," usually with hashtags involved. Clearly, mere hyperbole is no longer enough to separate the proverbial men from the boys, and in that spirit: Chelsea Light Moving will be literally murdering the audience this afternoon as part of their 1:30PM CDT performance at Mellow Johnny's Bike Shop (400 Nueces St.), a performance which is free and open to the public and will also be broadcast live on KEXP (90.3FM in Seattle, and streaming on kexp.org).

Those of you at SXSW who are wondering why one would go to a show where the band is going to literally murder the audience should note that Chelsea Light Moving's long-term plan is to literally turn Austin into a smoldering, bloody crater by the time they leave, so you're pretty much screwed no matter what.

Chelsea Light Moving's new self-titled album is, of course, available for purchase in many fine formats at our webstore. Now, if you'll excuse me, I see a margarita with my name on it.

Yo La Tengo and AC Newman Attempt To Extract Your Cash For WFMU

(above : James and Ira, struggling gamely with Silver Convention's "San Francisco Hustle".  Photo courtesy WFMU)

Venerable WFMU, oft-hailed as the finest listener supported free-form station in the world (or alternately, "almost as good as WSOU") is in the midst of their annual fundraising marathon. Though there's prizes & premiums galore, your real reward is an astonishing amount of live and archived material the station makes available over the airwaves, online, and soon, via mental telepathy (this is only part of reason why they spent two weeks a year shaking you down).

Yo La Tengo's vaunted covers-for-cash performances during the WFMU marathon are a 17 year tradition, as Ira Kaplan points out, and this Thursday at 9am EST, not even a concert tour of Germany will  stop Ira, Georgia, James and longtime associate Bruce Bennett from once again, murdering the classics (and perhaps the not-so-classic.)  This will mark the first time Yo La Tengo have done their covers-for-WFMU broadcast from a remote location (or if  you prefer, Berlin), and you'll undoubtedly want to remember that for some kind of Matador Trivia Night we intend to hold in lieu of a company Xmas party later in the year (more on this later --- it's a sensitive subject).

In addition, A.C. Newman will throw himself into the entertainment firestorm that is Tom Scharpling's "The Best Show On WFMU", tomorrow night at 9pm EST.

Namaa's fatoush

This Levantine chopped salad looks forward to summer. It's essential to get the best ingredients - tomatoes at this time of year are particularly problematic, so I recommend getting the smallest, ripest ones you can find on the vine. If even those are mealy or tasteless, try getting a lot of grape tomatoes - they tend to have a fair amount of concentrated sour-sweetness at any time of year. It's also important to try to get Lebanese-style mini-cucumbers. Full-size supermarket cucumbers are watery and tasteless.

Adapted from Ottolenghi and Tamimi's Jerusalem.

1 cup plain full-fat Greek yogurt and 3/4 cup plus 2 tbs whole milk
3 stale pitas, torn into bite-size chunks
Plum, cherry or grape tomatoes to equal 3 large tomatoes in season, cut into 2/3-inch dice
3 large radishes, thinly sliced
3 Lebanese or mini-cucumbers, peeled and cut into 2/3-inch dice
2 scallions, thinly sliced (green and white parts)
2 tbs flat-leaf parsley, coarsely chopped
2 tbs fresh mint leaves
1 tbs dried mint
2 cloves of garlic, crushed in a mortar and pestle or on the chopping board
3 tbs freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/4 cup olive oil, plus extra to drizzle
2 tbs white wine vinegar
3/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tbs ground sumac, or more, to garnish

Whisk the yogurt and whole milk together in a bowl and leave in a cool place or in the fridge for a minimum of 3 hours, or better yet, overnight, so that bubbles form on the surface. It's a less sour version of a sort of homemade buttermilk.

Prepare all the ingredients about half an hour prior to serving.

Place the pita bread chunks in a bowl and cover with the buttermilk. Pile all the other ingredients on top except the sumac and mix well. Allow to sit for 10 minutes so that all the flavors combine.

Serve into bowls, drizzle extra olive oil on top, and sprinkle generously with ground sumac.

We Love Music Industry Conventions Disguised As Music Festivals (And Vice Versa) : Matador / True Panther Artists At SXSW

I hope you'll excuse my weary tone --- it's not that I don't look forward to South By Southwest or the plethora of free, unaffiliated events (especially those that take place in glorified jello-shot emporiums masquerading as music venues for one week out of the year). It's just that I'm really pissed off someone told all of the bands below they're staying at my place.

Iceage NYC 1/25 - 26/13: A Short Film by Cali Thornhill Dewitt

You'll remember earlier this year Iceage visited New York to play two shows and help present the 'Thrown Together' gallery event, an art exhibition featuring some artworks from their friends local and global. Los Angeles-based artist/photographer/director/label boss Cali Thornhill Dewitt came along for the ride and produced a striking short film tracking the band's activities that weekend in the city & shots of the visuals on display, set to live audio of "Morals" from 'You're Nothing'  -- you can watch this below or at Pitchfork.TV today.

Iceage are on tour right now and will be in the states at the end of the month. Pick up 'You're Nothing' at the Matador store or your favorite music retailler.

Along with revising the storied logos for Thrill Jockey, 4AD, Merge and Audible Hiss Drag City, designer Ben Geier has taken a crack at Matador's family crest (above).   Paste Magazine's Laura Medina writes, "Anti, Sub Pop and Matador never looked so good."  I'll refrain from comment on Geier's updates to Anti and Sub Pop, but where Matador is concerned, I still prefer Mark Ohe's classic logo.

Chelsea Light Moving Played Trevor's Birthday

Thurston Moore responded to the comments section of Brooklyn Vegan to confirm that his NEW ROCK BAND would indeed (as promised in their bio) "detonate any birthday party, wedding or hullabaloo in any country, planet or stratosphere that doesn't support right wing extremist NRA sucking bozo-ology."

Last weekend in Haydenville, MA, the Chelseas did just that, playing a a handsome left-winger named Trevor's birthday party. This is the evidence:
