Today, in conjunction with Spotify and Electric Lady Studios, Perfume Genius  releases 'Live at Electric Lady'. The four-track EP features “Whole Life,” “Photograph,” and “On the Floor” - re-imagined versions of tracks off his most recent albums 'Ugly Season' and 'Set My Heart On Fire Immediately', as well as a cover of Radiohead’s “4 Minute Warning.”

As part of the Live at Electric Lady series, participating artists were invited to record their own compositions as well as cover songs by artists connected to the history of the legendary recording studio, resulting in truly unique recordings that showcase each artist’s creativity and musical style. The high-quality live audio recordings are distributed exclusively on Spotify.

“Touring over the last year has been really inspiring after so long away. I am happy to have a document of the new vibrancy and rousing spirit my band brings to the live versions of our most recent albums. "4 Minute Warning" became a favorite of mine during lockdown, something I would sit and sing over and over on the piano in my room. I'm happy to be out of that room now and sharing again." - Mike Hadreas

Snail Mail - "Feeling Like I Do" b/w "Headlock" (Spotify Singles)

Snail Mail (Lindsey Jordan) has released a cover of Superdrag’s “Feeling Like I Do” and a new version of “Headlock”, one of the standouts from her critically acclaimed 2021 album ‘Valentine’, for Spotify Singles. The two-song release drops in the midst of Snail Mail’s UK tour, which tonight (Wednsday, June 29th) sees her taking the stage at London’s Kentish Town Forum.

Speaking of the two new recordings, Jordan said: "I think that the Spotify version of ‘Headlock’ is different from the original, in that the original was recorded almost two years ago, and the more I perform the song the more I think of ideas that I wish I had put into the original. This version gave me the opportunity to implement some of those ideas. It's been really cool getting to cover ‘Feeling Like I Do’ by Superdrag because I love it, and I've loved it for a while, and I was able to make it my own by singing on it".

Julien Baker - "A Dreamer's Holiday"

(photo : Alysse Gafkjen)

Today Julien Baker shares her take on the holiday classic “A Dreamer’s Holiday.” The track is out via this year’s Spotify’s Singles: Holiday Collection which includes a wide range of covers and originals, from artists across a myriad of genres.
“I chose ‘Dreamers Holiday’ because I found it incredibly unique as far as holiday songs are concerned. It’s a very understated song- both lyrically and musically; while it’s technically about a ‘holiday’, it doesn’t directly reference any specific holiday theme, it leaves the lyrics a bit more open-ended. It's the same way with the music— the chord structure is complicated but surprisingly timeless to me even though the song itself is over 70 years old. It’s the kind of song whose arrangement can be re-imagined so many times, and I love the feeling of sonic potential a single like that gives me.” - Julien Baker

Perfume Genius – Spotify Singles Session Out Now, Fall Tour begins 9/27 in Santa Barbara

For those who have been able to see Perfume Genius live since the release of No Shape, you might find his cover of Mary Margaret O’Hara's "Body's In Trouble" familiar. It has been known to pop up in the set from time to time. Here's what Mike Hadreas has to say about the song he has chosen to cover over and over:

I started covering this song on tour almost immediately after hearing it for the first time. I was so struck by her command and presence even though she weaves in and out of being present. Her vocal is somehow on the rhythm and completely around it, lyrics and chords are repeated throughout but there is no real center. There are brief moments where the music fully connects in a traditional way but after a few listens the most satisfying part is the song's magic formlessness. I wouldn't dare try to mimic or recapture her performance, but I tried to sing in the same wandering, mantra-like way - but taking it somewhere a little more sinister. I've lost count of how many times I use the word "body" in my songs.

My relationship with my own body is confusing and I use music to try and puzzle it out, or as rebellion against needing a form at all. Playing this cover onstage every night I use her lyric to phase in and out of both of those ideas.

The Single Session also includes "Slip Away" which was also recorded live at Spotify's Studio in NYC.

Algiers - Mute Studio Sessions

Algiers - Blood (Mute Studio Sessions)

"Blood"
"But She Was Not Flying"
"Remains"

"The Mute Sessions were undertaken as a way of using alternate instrumentation to accentuate different sonic and conceptual contours, which may not have been so heavily in the foreground in the album versions.
Tape manipulation, musique concrete and synthesizer programming were some of the techniques employed here."
"We endeavoured to strip a few of the songs of their machinations, as if re-sung from sheet music at the end of times to a tape loop and a broken piano."

Earlier this week, Algiers have been compiling a series of personal playlists on the band tumblr alongside photos from the past year of touring ;

Celebrate Matador's 105th Anniversary WIth A 102 Song Playlist At Spotify

It may have escaped your attention earlier this week, what with all the column inches afforded Taylor Swift's decision to remove music from Spotify, that the last remaining American who witnessed the formation of Matador Records had either passed away or disabled their Facebook account.  With this historic occasion in mind, we've assembled a 102 song Matador playlist at Spotify that will either have you partying like it's 1889 or perhaps will provoke a huge outcry over all songs that are missing (for instance, Taylor Swift's earliest works for Matador). Write down your favorite omissions, and we'll try to get 'em cleared in time for our 110th Anniversary!

Matador's Fave October Songs at Spotify

(DISCLAIMER : the entire label staff didn't actually have a vote in this, but if you wanna make fun of someone for being into Montrose, by all means, tar all of us with the same brush if that's your game. We've been taking emotional abuse for 25 years and counting!)

(ALSO : we did this in August, too. Not that you fully appreciated it or anything)
