Fucked Up - '44th & Vanderbilt' EP

Last fall, we celebrated the 15th anniversary of Fucked Up’s ‘The Chemistry of Common Life’ – an era-defining punk LP that also just so happened to be the Canadian band’s Matador Records debut. This Friday, our long-in-the-works orange vinyl 2xLP reissue will finally arrive on shelves.

Today, you can listen to a brand new digital EP, ‘44th & Vanderbilt,’ which compiles three ‘ChemCom’-era session performances with No Age’s excellent remix of “No Epiphany".

We’ve also posted a new episode of the Matador Revisionist History podcast, which finds Mike Haliechuk and Jonah Falco in conversation with former Matador fixture (and current World of Echo proprietor), Natalie Judge. They discuss making the record, recording nine months of overdubs, quitting their day jobs, and asking Michael Stipe to jump on the mic for a Feelies cover at the close of their 12-hour long record release show (spoiler: he passed).

Today, 'The Chemistry of Common Life' remains as conceptually ambitious as it is musically adventurous, pushing through and far beyond the accepted boundaries of punk and hardcore. At the time, we called it “an expansive epic about the mysteries of birth, death, and the origins of life (and re-living). Merging elements of hardcore songwriting with up to 70 tracks of guitars, organs, winds and vocals the music remains iconoclastic and startling.”

Originally released October 7th, 2008, The Chemistry of Common Life is the second album by Toronto punk band Fucked Up.

Today, we celebrate the record’s 15th anniversary with the promise of a fresh-looking orange vinyl reissue due out February 23rd. Pre-order it HERE.

The band has also completed a new video for the song “Black Albino Bones,” which is assembled from era-appropriate tour photos, videos, and ephemera. And, finally, Matador’s hardworking archivists have unearthed a never-before-seen 30-minute clip from The Chemistry of Common Life’s still-much-discussed 12-hour-long NYC record release show – an event that somehow roped-in members of The Vivian Girls, Vampire Weekend, and The Cro-Mags, as well as J. Mascis and, very briefly, Michael Stipe.

Today, The Chemistry of Common Life remains as conceptually ambitious as it is musically adventurous, pushing through and far beyond the accepted boundaries of punk and hardcore. At the time, we called it “an expansive epic about the mysteries of birth, death, and the origins of life (and re-living). Merging elements of hardcore songwriting with up to 70 tracks of guitars, organs, winds and vocals the music remains iconoclastic and startling.”

Fucked Up drummer Jonah Falco writes:

“After Hidden World it felt like all of the musical impulses of Fucked Up condensed and turned into this musical dew, which inexplicably settled in this heavier, condensed place. The layering became way more intentional and focused, and instead of just making things long for the sake of being long, dense for the sake of being dense, the length and weight of our songs was necessary to house new found compositional moves. Development, tension, narrative, and space in song.

In some ways it felt like mockery – putting bongos on ‘Crooked Head’ and French horn on ‘Days of Last,’ ‘Royal Swan’ having about 1% punk involved, etc. – but in other ways opened the door for us moving forward to give these outlying ideas about our music precedence in our songwriting. Chemistry was unchained and free creativity from inexperienced and raw, but demanding and developing musicians.”

Next week, Fucked Up will play a special one-off show, performing The Chemistry of Common Life in its entirety at Toronto’s Horshoe Tavern.

The group will also tour throughout North America, the UK, and the EU this fall, with appearances at Pitchfork Music Festival in London and the Primava Weekender in Benidorm. Find the complete itinerary below.

Pre-order / Stream David Comes To Life

Next month, Matador will honor the 10th anniversary of Fucked Up’s early ’10s masterwork David Comes to Life with a limited-edition lightbulb-yellow 2xLP reissue. That album –which clocks in at 78-minutes –may be as heavy a dose of genre-bursting progressive-psychedelic-hardcore punk brilliance as anybody can comfortably ingest at once.

But if we’re somehow underestimating you, there’s more. On March 25th, Fucked Up will release Do All Words Can Do, a nine-track compilation gathering David era-appropriate rarities and B-sides, all of which were previously available only on 7”.

(Pictured above: David Comes To Life 10th anniversary vinyl, out Dec 10)
The band will also tour North America (East and West Coast dates) and the UK early next year performing the album in full.

Fucked Up’s Jonah Falco, Sandy Miranda, and Josh Zucker also appear on the most recent episode of Matador's Revisionist History podcast. Joined by friend and tour-mate Patrick Stickles of Titus Andronicus–whose own punk rock concept album, The Monitor, also turns 10 this year–the conversation offers insight (and entertaining dirt) on the writing and recording of DCTL. Matador Revisionist History Podcast - Episode 4: Fucked Up & Titus Andronicus

Listen to the Matador Revisionist History Podcast HERE.

Stream / pre-order limited lightbulb yellow LP edition of David Comes To Life HERE.

Today we pull back the curtain on the fourth installment of the Matador Revisionist History podcast, which pairs artists and collaborators to discuss a Matador album celebrating a noteworthy anniversary.

This episode honors Fucked Up’s epic rock opera, David Comes to Life (2011), which first hit shelves 10 years ago last June.

Here band members Jonah Falco (Mr. Jo), Sandy Miranda (Mustard Gas), and Josh Zucker (Gulag) look back on the early ’10s with friend and tour-mate Patrick Stickles (Titus Andronicus), himself no stranger to punk rock concept albums. Discussion is nudged along by our host, Matt Sweeney.

Their chat yields insight into the writing and recording of David Comes to Life, but also entertaining tangents on composer Jim Steinman’s lewd oblique strategies, roady-ing as a path to physical fitness, and the secret to Fucked Up’s longevity (“If anybody tries to grow and do something better, tear them down”).

Fucked Up - 'David Comes To Life' 10th Anniversary Edition

directed by Robert Semmer

In 2011, Toronto’s Fucked Up delivered an album that chafed the edges of punk rock’s conceptual boundaries – a set of songs that splayed freely into unexpected instrumentation, psychedelic drift, and situationist philosophy. Its ambition was limitless and its run time opulent.

Which is to say, they made a concept album.

On December 10th, Matador Records will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Fucked Up’s titanic 78-minute early ’10s masterpiece, 'David Comes to Life;, with a limited-edition 2xLP reissue on lightbulb-yellow vinyl.

The group will also tour North America (East and West Coast dates) and the UK early next year performing the album in full. Find the complete list of dates below.

Today, you can listen to “The Truest Road,” drawn from a rarities LP that will be announced later this year. The compilation 'David’s Town' – a companion to 'David Comes to Life', previously available only on vinyl – has also been made available on streaming for the first time ever.

'David Comes To Life' is a story of lost love, global meltdown, depression, bombs, guilt and madness. Or is it? A modern-day morality tale set amid the dour backdrop of a British industrial town in the late ’70s, it’s a four-part play that follows the dark moods and inner psyche of the titular hero. At the same time, the reliability of the narrator gets called into question. The tables are turned, responsibility shifts, and the story goes meta.

Of course, you could always ignore the backstory and just listen to a fiercely imaginative double album of blistering, melodic rock'n'roll shot through with all manner of psychic weirdness

As you're probably aware, podcasts have become the go-to medium for tastemakers and cultural observers including but not limited to Adam Carolla, Louie Anderson and former WWE announcer Jim Ross.  Throwing his hat into the ring this week is Fucked Up's Damian Abraham with the debut of "Turned Out A Punk", a weekly series in which he'll be chatting with iconic characters from different corners of the entertainment world about how punk impacted them and vice versa.  Episode #1 features a conversation with our dear friend & tireless supporter, Beggars Group founder and chairman Martin Mills.   If you're thinking this would've been the perfect time to ask Martin, "if Gary Numan and Mark E. Smith were both drowning and you could only save one, who would you choose?", that's why Damian's doing a proper podcast and you're sitting around coming up with unhelpful ideas.  Leave this stuff to the professionals!

'GLASS BOYS' IS OUT NOW, WATCH MINI-DOC FEATURING MANY FAMILIAR FACES

This week will be the three year anniversary of David Comes to Life, and with that marker, Fucked Up today release the life-affirming and personal glimpse into how far the band has come with 'Glass Boys'. Two versions of the record are available for your pleasure. Check out the 1/2 speed drums on 'Slow Boys' (available as a bonus LP w/ early pressings of 'Glass Boys').

To celebrate this release, we have a few new things from the band for you today. Watch without much comment, a mini-documentary directed by Andy Capper and Scott Pierce, featuring many familiar faces:

Official video for "Sun Glass" (also directed by Andy Capper)

The band have also put together a playlist (the first of many to come) titled 'Other Side of the Looking Glass Boys' on Rdio. You can listen to that HERE. Here is what Jonah Falco had to say about the playlist:

"Mostly for these mixes i've tried to find songs which are equivalent to the musical thematics on the record more than the lyrical ones. The notes, the feels, the registers, and the sensations. But the good thing about the eternity of pop culture is that usually when guided in certain directions culturally, the brain tends to mine the same emotions and conclusions throughout the ages. This doesn't have anything to do with being unimaginative, but more to do with the often vast ideological unity of rock and roll.

Glass Boys, vaguely distilled, is a record about looking back while trying to move forward. All of this music is from the past, but you should listen to it in the present and think of it as contemporary. If you're patient enough to want to pay close attention, I think you'll find a few cheeky similarities between grooves, riffs, and themes. If not, you've still got ten reasons to dance."
