VIDEO : Muzz - "Summer Love"

Video by Muzz
Collages courtesy of Andrew McGranahan
Animations by Sabrina Nichols
Edited by Paul Banks

Last month, Muzz released their self-titled debut, “an album that bears the tide marks of its creators — Matt Barrick’s jazzy swing, multi-instrumentalist Josh Kaufman’s soft warmth, Paul Banks’s instantly identifiable baritone — but it defies easy categorization” (The FADER). Today, the longtime friends and collaborators present a video for the laid back and nostalgic “Summer Love.” On “Summer Love,” muted organ by Kaufman and flute by Stuart Bogie drift along as the song rides out on the main vibe and vocal line by Banks: “I?m in the race//I?m on the get-go//I wanna skate//I want the XO// Summer love//Summer love ends//Silence is sung we won?t remember.” The video combines “footage Matt shot a few years ago of a deserted drive-through theater, with clips we individually generated during lockdown and the majestically psychedelic collage work of the great Andrew McGranahan. It’s what we feel is a nice visual poem to accompany the song,” says Banks. “Rather than a summer lockdown document, we aimed more to emulate the work of Truffaut, Fellini, or Cassavetes and to capture three stories of romance and solitude. Lofty aspirations, humble result; but we hope you enjoy it even a fraction as much as we did creating it.”

Perfume Genius - "Without You" Video Competition WInners Announced

Around the release of his critically acclaimed new album 'Set My Heart On Fire Immediately' , Perfume Genius, announced the “Without You” video competition. Mike Hadreas asked his fans to submit music video ideas and 3 winners have now been chosen. Each director received $1,000 to make their vision come to life as well as $1,000 to be donated to the charity of their choice. The winners are Liz Lian, whose video will premiere today, Samantha Mitchell whose clip will debut August 4, and Kristin Massa, whose video will premiere on August 11.
"This song, and Mike's artist's statement about it, reassures me that moments of comfort and clarity are just as certain to appear as confusing, lonely moments are. It reminds me to be patient and to turn toward conflict within myself and view it as a beautiful, imperfect metamorphosis, rather than hide from it. This music video is about the exploration and discovery of self through the natural world. I aim to depict the unfamiliar, abstract, and jumbled parts of ourselves through elements of surrealism and magical realism. Narratives of self-discovery in media often center around coming-of-age stories of young white people as they enter adulthood. But self-discovery and reinvention occur throughout our lifetimes. Seeds of change sown within us can blossom into exciting, life-altering experiences when we least expect it. Annie Tezuka, who stars in this video, did a beautiful job embodying this experience. I wanted to shine a particular light on the experience of women who, as they age, are increasingly seen as they are in relation to others – mothers, wives, grandmothers – and for this video to be a tribute to the complexities and constant change within all of us, especially those women." - Liz Lian

Lian has designated The ACLU of Southern California as her charity of choice. SoCal’s long history of advocacy, litigation, and education defends civil rights and liberties regarding racial and economic justice, freedom of speech, government transparency, LGBTQ rights, privacy, gender equity, reproductive justice, immigrants’ rights, criminal justice and drug policy reform, and police practices.

Samantha Mitchell will donate to the Baltimore chapter of the Sex Workers Outreach Project. Sex work is work. The Sex Workers Outreach Project is committed to ending violence and stigma against sex workers. Their national social justice network that advocates for the fundamental human rights of sex workers, including harm reduction, positive representation, and decriminalization.

Kristin Massa will donate to RAICES
RAICES is a non-profit organization in Texas that provides legal services and advocacy for immigrant children, families, and refugees. Every immigrant deserves the right to human dignity, and RAICES defends this right by providing legal services for thousands of children in tent cities, bond assistance, and by training pro-bono lawyers to aid detained clients forced to navigate the ICE detention system. By donating to this organization, you will directly contribute to the quality of life for immigrants caught up in the deliberately oppressive immigration policies in the United States.

Perfume Genius - "On The Floor", "Jason" from "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon"

"On The Floor"

"Jason"

Last night, Perfume Genius performed the single “On The Floor,” from the recently release 'Set My Heart On Fire Immediately,' for NBC's "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon". The performance was shot at Los Angeles' The Lodge Room. In addition to the televised performance, Hadreas also shared an online-only performance of his ballad “Jason,” a stunning and relatable retelling of a fictional one night stand. Hadreas was backed by a band of notable performers including his long time collaborator Alan Wyffels and Hand Habits’ Meg Duffy.

Yo La Tengo - 'We Have Amnesia Sometimes' + 2 Live Performances Streaming This Weekend

(photo : James McNew)

In case you haven’t caught on already, Yo La Tengo have spent the week quietly seeding the web with new music -- posting one song a day via their freshly minted Bandcamp page.

Today, we’re gathering it all into a single tidy zip file: 'We Have Amnesia Sometimes'. This digital collection features five instrumental compositions that Georgia Hubley, Ira Kaplan, and James McNew recorded over 10 days in late April and early May during socially distanced sessions at their rehearsal space in Hoboken, NJ. A vinyl edition will be available at a later date on Bandcamp via Egon.

Improvisatory and atmospheric, the music expands upon the moods and processes that informed the trio’s now-more-timely-than-ever 2018 full-length, 'There’s a Riot Going On'.
If you’ve spent any time hanging out with us at our rehearsal space in Hoboken — that pretty much covers none of you — you’ve heard us playing formlessly (he said, trying to sidestep the word “improvising”).  Most of the songs we’ve written in the last 25 years have begun that way, but often we do it for no other reason than to push away the outside world.

In late April, with the outside world weighing on everybody, we determined that the three of us could assemble in Hoboken without disobeying the rules laid out by Governor Murphy, and resumed . . . “practicing” hardly describes it, because we’ve done no practicing per se, and anyway what would we be practicing for . . . playing.  James set up one microphone in the middle of the room in case we stumbled on something useful for the future. Instead we decided to release some of the things we did right now.

-- Ira

Initially exclusive to Bandcamp, 'We Have Amnesia Sometimes' is today available via the streaming service of your choice.

'We Have Amnesia Sometimes' - Track List
1. "James and Ira demonstrate mysticism and some confusion holds (Monday)"
2. "Georgia thinks it’s probably okay (Tuesday)"
3. "James gets up and watches mourning birds with Abraham (Wednesday)"
4. "Georgia considers the two blue ones (Thursday)"

5. "Ira searches for the slide, sort of (Friday)"

This weekend Yo La Tengo will be streaming two performances shot at their rehearsal space, Saturday, July 18 at 9pm EDT and Sunday, July 19 at 1pm EDT, under the name 'We Have Amnesia Live'.

The sets will be unique, approximiately 30-45 minutes in length and  generated in the “formless” style of the 'We Have Amnesia Sometimes' recordings. Tickets will be $10 (or $18 for both shows) . All proceeds from the event will benefit the Brennan Center For Justice, a nonpartisan law and policy institute fighting for democracy – to ensure fair elections, to end mass incarceration, and to preserve civil liberties.

Gang Of Four - First 3 Albums, 14 Concert Recordings Now Streaming

(photo : Andrew Corrigan)

We are pleased to announce that Matador Records will now oversee a number of key catalog titles by the legendary Leeds band Gang of Four, including the classic albums 'Entertainment!' (1979), 'Solid Gold' (1981), and 'Songs of the Free' (1982).

These records are once again available across streaming services and are joined by 14 live releases capturing performances between 1979 and 1984. Find a curated playlist of highlights from the live tapes here.

Gang of Four was formed in 1976 by bassist Dave Allen, drummer Hugo Burnham, guitarist Andy Gill, and singer Jon King. The band pioneered a style of music that inverted punk's blunt and explosive energies — favoring tense rhythms, percussive guitars, and lyrics that traded in Marxist theory and situationism. This first lineup of the group released two monumental albums, 'Entertainment!' (1979) and 'Solid Gold '(1981). A third, 'Songs of the Free' (1982), was recorded with Sara Lee replacing Allen. These records have endured as a formative influence, not only to subsequent generations of musicians, but also activists, writers, and visual artists.

“Ether,” the introductory track on 'Entertainment!', was recently sampled by Run The Jewels, who used the song’s core riff to form the backbone of their track “the ground below” on the  newly released 'RTJ4'.

More to come.
