It’s been a triumphant year in Yo La Tengo-world: Georgia, Ira, and James released a highly-acclaimed new album '(This Stupid World'), performed a sold-out US tour, and traveled throughout the globe. Ira even put a heater straight across home plate at Citi Field. And there’s more to come.

Today, they’ve got a new EP landing on digital services, 'The Bunker Sessions', which collects live performances of four songs from 'This Stupid World',  plus one James McNew-led classic.

As of this week, the band is in Japan for a run of shows which includes two sold out dates in Tokyo. On December 7th, they’ll begin their annual Hanukkah residency at Bowery Ballroom (also sold out!). And in February, Yo La Tengo will hit the road once again, touring from San Francisco back to the east coast. Find a complete itinerary below.

‘The Bunker Sessions’ Tracklist
1. Sinatra Drive Breakdown
2. Aselestine
3. Fallout
4. Apology Letter
5. Stockholm Syndrome

Yo La Tengo - June 2023 North American Dates

Yo La Tengo continue their relentless touring on behalf of album-of-the-year (career? century?) candidate 'This Stupid World' with 16 additional North American shows this June. If your city is not represented below, that's probably because they just played there or plan to later in the year. Unless your city is a truly dreadful place, in which case there's only so much Yo La Tengo or we can do about it (though we do encourage you to vote in local elections, and/or drive to see Yo La Tengo if it's not too far).

Tickets go on sale at 10am local time this Friday, April 14.

Yo La Tengo - "Sinatra Drive Breakdown"

Ahead of Friday's release of the new album, ‘This Stupid World’, Yo La Tengo have released the sprawling album opener “Sinatra Drive Breakdown”. Referencing the Hoboken waterfront boulevard, “Sinatra Drive Breakdown” is driven by hypnotic rhythm and spontaneous bursts of guitar, as the band intones, “I see clearly how it ends / I see the moon rise as the sun descends”.

The band embark on a tour of the US next week, followed by UK and European shows in April and May, with many of the dates sold out. The full  itinerary is below.

Yo La Tengo - 'The Sounds Of Science', Now Streaming On The Criterion Channel

‘The Sounds of Science : Yo La Tengo Plays Painlevé

The mesmerizing, utterly unclassifiable films of Jean Painlevé have to be seen to be believed: delightful, surrealist-influenced dream works that are also serious science. The French filmmaker-scientist-inventor had a decades-spanning career in which he created hundreds of short films on subjects ranging from astronomy to pigeons to, most famously, such marine-life marvels as the seahorse and the sea urchin. Set to an original score—never before available to stream—by indie-rock heroes Yo La Tengo, the suite of eight underwater miniatures presented here captures the strange beauty and wonder of the aquatic world with a Dadaist’s eye.

Yo La Tengo’s latest album, This Stupid World, will be released on February 10 by Matador Records.

Coming February 10 2023 : Yo La Tengo - 'This Stupid World'

presave/purchase 'This Stupid World'
stream / download 'Fallout'

Today we bring you the indisputably excellent news that on February 10 Matador will release 'This Stupid World', the sixteenth album by Yo La Tengo.

In December, the band will return to Bowery Ballroom for their annual eight-night Hanukkah concert series. Early 2023, Yo La Tengo will hit the road on a wide-ranging tour of the US, UK, and Europe.

Time keeps moving and things keep changing, but that doesn’t mean we can't fight back. Yo La Tengo have raced time for nearly four decades and, to my ears, they just keep winning. The trio’s latest victory is called 'This Stupid World', a spellbinding set of reflective songs that resist the ticking clock. This music is not so much timeless as time- defiant. “I want to fall out of time,” Ira Kaplan sings in “Fallout.” “Reach back, unwind.”

Part of how Kaplan, Georgia Hubley, and James McNew escape time is by watching it pass, even accepting it when they must. “I see clearly how it ends / I see the moon rise as the sun descends,” they sing during opener “Sinatra Drive Breakdown.” In the séance-like "Until it Happens,” Kaplan plainly intones, “Prepare to die / Prepare yourself while there’s still time.” But 'This Stupid World' is also filled with calls to reject time – bide
it, ignore it, waste it. "Stay alive," he adds later in the same song. "Look away from the hands of time.”

Of course, times have changed for Yo La Tengo as much as they have for everyone else. In the past, the band has often worked with outside producers and mixers. They made 'This Stupid World' all by themselves. And their time-tested judgment is both sturdy enough to keep things to the band’s high standards, and nimble enough to make things new.

Another new thing about 'This Stupid World' : it’s the most live-sounding Yo La Tengo album in years. At the base of nearly every track is the trio playing all at once, giving everything a right-now feel. Take the signature combination of hypnotic rhythm and spontaneous guitar on “Sinatra Drive Breakdown,” or the steady chug of “Tonight’s Episode,” a blinkered tunnel of forward-moving sound. There’s an immediacy to the music, as if the distance between the first pass and the final product has become more
direct.

The songs on 'This Stupid World 'are still journeys, though. An example is the absorbing, three-dimensional “Brain Capers.” To construct this swirl, the band blends guitar chords, bass loops, drum punches, and various iterations of Hubley and Kaplan's voices intoshifting layers. Simpler but just as dense is closer “Miles Away"; A dubby rhythm lurks
below Hubley’s vocal, which brushes across the song like paint leaving bright blurs.

Throughout the album, these touches, accents, and surprises intensify each piece. It’s ararity – a raw-sounding record that gives you plenty of headphone-worthy detail to chew  on.

'This Stupid World' also gives your brain a lot to digest. All these battles with time drive toward heavy conclusions. In the gripping “Aselestine,” Hubley sings about what sounds like a friend on death's door : “The clock won’t tick / I can’t predict / I can’t sell your books, though you asked me to.” In “Apology Letter,” time turns simple communication into something fraught and confusing: "The words / Derail on the way from me to you.”

Not everything is so serious, though. The absurdist “Tonight’s Episode"  helps McNew learn to milk cows, steal faces, and treat guacamole as a verb. And somehow Alice Cooper, Ray Davies, and Rick Moranis show up in “Brain Capers” — all telling us that time isn’t finished yet.

So I guess everyone on This Stupid World grapples with how time keeps steamrolling and how we keep trying to do something about it. It is there in the title, a defiant but clear-eyed declaration that suggests a will to fight, against the odds. It’s there in the title track too: “This stupid world – it’s killing me / This stupid world – is all we have.” Such realism leads to the resolute optimism of 'This Stupid World's parting shot, “Miles Away,”
which sees time’s passage and life'ss impermanence as things to deal with rather than reasons to despair. “You feel alone / Friends are all gone", Hubley sings softly. "Keep wiping the dust from your eyes.” -
Marc Masters

Yo La Tengo - Complete Matador Catalog Now Available On Bandcamp

his

Yo La Tengo's entire Matador Records catalog is now available on Bandcamp starting today. This is significant for several reasons, not limited to this coming Friday (November 4) marking another day in which Bandcamp waives their revenue share (aka "Bandcamp Friday"). So if you're a big fan of Matador pocketing more money than usual, wait a few days.

We do realize this announcement will likely provoke replies asking when some other band's entire catalog will be available on Bandcamp and the answer to that question is most assuredly, "someday" or "maybe". Thank you.

Yo La Tengo - Hanukkah 2022

And now, a message from Yo La Tengo:

Hi everybody, In answer to the question that at least one person living in the land down under has asked, yup, we're going to be back at the Bowery Ballroom this year to play all eight nights of Hanukkah. If you've celebrated the holiday with us before, you already know that we'll duct tape the electric menorah to the bass amp, and every night Yo La Tengo will play a set (if history repeats itself, no song will be repeated during the run). There'll be a comic and an opening band that will be unannounced until doors open each night. And if we can convince anyone else to join in, they'll be there too. The proceeds will be going to charity. If you haven't celebrated the holiday with us before, maybe it's time that you did.

Hanukkah starts on Sunday, December 18 and continues through Sunday, December 25. Tickets are $50 each and will go on sale on Friday, October 7 at 10 am EDT. OK, gotta start practicing!

Tickets will be available at: yolatengo.com/schedule

Matador Revisionist History Podcast - Episode 7: Yo La Tengo

Pre-order I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One on limited yellow vinyl

In April, Yo La Tengo’s landmark 1997 album I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One celebrated its 25th anniversary.

In this latest episode of our Matador Revisionist History podcast, the band – Georgia Hubley, Ira Kaplan, and James McNew – joins label co-owner Gerard Cosloy to discuss the record’s history and singular standing within the YLT oeuvre. “We know this is considered a key part of the arc,” explains Kaplan. “If we’re at the merch table and somebody is asking, ‘I don’t have any of your records, which one should I get?’ we know this is the right answer. Whether we feel that way or not, we know we’re supposed to recommend this record.”

Further reminiscences include the origin of The Condo Fucks, how a fake Brian Brain tribute album spiraled into real-life drama, and why the working title of “The Lie and How We Told It” was “The Hard Singing Song.” Listen HERE.

Our limited-edition yellow vinyl reissue of I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One will be out July 29 (US/CA, Aug 12 ROW). Pre-order HERE. We have also posted a digital deluxe version of the album, which includes the band’s 1997 Peel Session and remixes of “Autumn Sweater” by µ-Ziq, Kevin Shields, and members of Tortoise. Find that HERE.

Matador’s team of archivists have also unearthed an extended cut of the “Sugarcube” video. The clip was directed by Phil Morrison and stars David Cross and Bob Odenkirk, creators of the legendary comedy sketch series, Mr. Show. For added context, the band also recorded a conversation with Cross reflecting on the making of the video and its legacy, which you can view HERE.

Coming July 29 : Yo La Tengo - 'I Can Hear The Heart Beating as One' 25th Anniversary Edition

Today, Yo La Tengo’s undeniable classic 1997 album 'I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One' is a quarter of a century old. To celebrate, a digital deluxe version of the album is released today offering a smorgasbord of extras: the band’s 1997 Peel Session featuring live takes of “Autumn Sweater,” “Shadows,” and a 9-minute pass through “I Heard You Looking,” as well as remixes of “Autumn Sweater” by µ-Ziq, Kevin Shields, and members of Tortoise, many of which have not previously been made available for streaming. “I remember that I wanted it sounding pretty organic, which is why I recorded it to a cassette and pitched it about a bit,” recalls µ-Ziq’s Mike Paradinas. “It really is all over the place.”

Best of all: Matador’s archivists have unearthed a director’s cut of the “Sugarcube” video, directed by Phil Morrison and starring David Cross  and Bob Odenkirk, creators of the legendary comedy sketch series, "Mr. Show", which adds 30 seconds of never-before-seen footage. “I had the greatest time making this! Mr. Show reunion, of course, and a great song and scenario,” says Odenkirk. “We improvised these hard-rock clowns, perhaps my greatest work in ‘clowning,’ and would love to revisit and really dig deep on who these two were – hair-metal go-getters!”

“It was fun! (Pretty rare for a music video.) And such a good group of people making it for pretty much nothing, including David Doernberg, Joe Ventura, Nicole Whitaker, James Whitaker, Michael Mees, Leesa Evans, Damon Chesse, Amy Silver, Elena Balshem, Matt Chesse, Bill Ryan, Dennis Callaci (and maybe Allen Callaci and Chris Jones), and many more. The school sweatshirts were made by the legendary The Wizard, on Sunset near The Roxy and The Rainbow.”

On the physical end of things, the record will be made available in a limited 25th anniversary edition on translucent yellow vinyl on July 29 (US/CA) & Aug 12 (ROW). Also available will be a reproduction of the video’s “President McKinley Academy of Rock” sweatshirts

Yo La Tengo : Hannukah 2020 Livestream, December 18

(photo : Amanda Slater Tattoo)

For nearly 20 years, Yo La Tengo’s annual eight-night Hannukah concert series has been a much-loved staple of the NYC/NJ music scene. However, as with many events in 2020, this year’s celebration will be taking a slightly different form.

On Friday, December 18 – the last night of Hannukah – Yo La Tengo will present a stripped-down version of their usual holiday fare, streamed live from The Greene Space at WNYC. In keeping with tradition, the evening will feature a surprise opening musical act, followed by a comedic performance, plus a set by Yo La Tengo.

Tickets can be purchased online, with proceeds going to the National Independent Venue Association.

The performance will be rebroadcast on December 19.
