If you enjoyed something in the MataBlog, thank you very much! If there was something you found particularly troubling, please be advised that a) maybe you should read it again and b) the contents of this blog do not necessarily represent the opinions of Matador Records, Beggars Group, the combined staff of either company, nor the Matador artist roster. Opinions are like friends — hardly anyone has one worth listening to.

A Note and A New Song From Glasser

The last public show Glasser played was February of last year. Since then, she’s been locked away in a studio working on her follow-up to 2010?s Ring. She’s playing her first show since then this weekend at LA’s FYF Fest. She’s decided to use the occasion to release her first new music in a while. The song is called “Shape”, it’s a very powerful song, and we can honestly say that it’s one of the best pieces of music that’s ever come out under the True Panther imprint. More Glasser very soon…in the meantime enjoy the music and this note from her.
I have been thinking a lot about space. Not only outer space and physical boundaries, but also inner mental space. There are so many beginnings and endings and edges and shores inside and outside our minds. Some are impossible to scale and they make us feel small. I feel small and far removed at times, and I push myself farther away in a kind of compulsion. These are physical comforts I cling to, but always when I cling to them I realize that the isolation I’m afraid of is in my heart and not on a crowded sidewalk. I also have moments of ecstasy, milestones that drive me forward in search of more. These emotions and sensations elude me though, they seem to exist in their own seperate planes. I still chase them. I can become so mesmerized by something outside myself, a person or place that I try to reflect its power and the way it makes me feel.

This is why I feel so lucky to be able to make art, especially music. My experiences flow together and become the stuff of invention. I spent the last year and a half making my new album, which will come out in October. I thought about architecture, a physical imposition in my life, and the fluid emotional boundaries of relationships, also sometimes imposed.

More news to come, in the meantime, enjoy “SHAPE”

Coachella stage times announced/Bands on the road - Interpol announce special Coachella set details

As announced on the official Coachella page, stage times are out now for all bands playing this weekends festival and you'll find Matador and True Panther bands well represented, without any clashes (...hopefully) too!

Additionally, Interpol have announced exciting details about their Coachella performance in collaboration with The Creators Project, David Lynch, Andi Watson, HPX and Wieden & Kennedy:

Interpol Under Surveillance

Surrounded as we are by an ever-increasing number of cameras in our daily lives, we begin to lose ownership of our own images. Anonymous technology is analyzing, categorizing and archiving our very existence.

Interpol, in collaboration with David Lynch, Andi Watson, HPX and Wieden & Kennedy present a visual juxtaposition of the seen and the unseen. As the observer becomes the observed, the performance explores the deepening layers of covert surveillance, morphing data acquisition into visual beauty and questioning the fine line between the viewer and the voyeur.

Featuring the premiere of the David Lynch animation "I Touch A Red Button Man" for the song "Lights", and utilizing real-time visual manipulation from Seattle-based HPX, the performance will be streamed live to the internet as well as to the audience at Coachella.

From here Interpol continue their tour around the southern states with School Of Seven Bells, The New Pornographers head out with the Walkmen in tow, Cold Cave join the Kills on the road, Glasser will be supporting TV On The Radio, whilst Delorean bring their broken Spanglish charm to headline shows in Chicago and Brooklyn.

The Coachella stages and times for all our acts are below, enjoy!

Friday
Cold Cave – 3pm @ Mohave Stage
Interpol – 7:25pm @ Coachella Stage

Saturday
Glasser – 5:15pm @ Gobi Tent
The New Pornographers –  6:35pm @ Outdoor Theatre

Sunday
Delorean – Sun, 4/17, 2pm or 3pm @ Gobi Tent

Todd Netter reports from SXSW, part one

Our trusty Product Manager Todd Netter reports from SXSW...

Matador's Cavalcade Of Stars At SXSW (And Events That Aren't Actually Part Of SXSW)

(scenes from SXSW 2005 : Matador co-owner, Austin resident for all of 15 minutes politely instructs a motorist to "go the fuck back where you came from" before recognizing his dog's veterinarian)

It's that time of year, when the fair of city of Austin is besieged by thousands of aspiring musicians, label creeps, bloggers, tech pimps, cinema parasites and self-styled marketing reptiles, all of 'em urinating in my front garden on their way to and from some dubious "showcase" or launch party designed to appeal to their MOST CRAVEN INSTINCTS. I watch all of this from my front porch, my air rifle sitting atop a cooler of Guyaki Yerba Matte, wondering exactly how much jail time I'd serve for shooting the bluetooth earpiece off the skull of a gentleman trying to negotiate a contract at the foot of my driveway.

At which point, I'm reminded that he's actually a guest in my home and our conference call that I've been ignoring is already 10 minutes old. Where are my manners?  Sure, Austin's chock-a-block with SCHMUCKS ON THE MAKE this week, but who am I to point an accusatory finger at these lovely visitors when they provide this label with such a fabulous opportunity to hawk our wares?  The following Matador artists are playing (too many times) in Austin this week.  Shows marked * will require an SXSW badge or wristband for priority entry ; happily, such gigs are in the overwhelming minority compared to the open-to-the-great unwashed public events listed below.  I look forward to seeing you around town this week, and thank you again for keeping Austin, TX's property values well above the national average.

GLASSER: The QR Code and the Damage Done

As you may have seen on the internets the last few days, our very own Glasser performed on the Jimmy Fallon show on Monday. The concept of using QR codes on TV came from a desire to create a more interactive experience for viewers of the show (shouting out "yo hit me up on Twitter" just didn't cut it). So we places a series of QR codes around the stage to embed special content in the performance.

About the QR Codes

We wanted to solve the problem of how can people at home or in an audience feel a greater level of participation than just sitting and listening. By using QR codes people will explore and find embedded content that was previously not available to them and have a richer viewing experience. Glasser is not a 2-dimensional artist- the primary thing that drew us into her music was the 3D world that her music and her personality invoke- it's a world you want to dive into.

Rather than just use standard QR code generators, Glasser wanted to re-interpret the album cover for Ring. To achieve this, RISD graduate student, Kyuha Shim, built a system using programming language that receives color data sets from Glasser's album graphics and adapts them to the modules that she designed. The result is an aesthetic for the QR codes that both departs from the monochromatic standards for QR codes, and more importantly ties the experience back to the album sleeve originally designed by Tauba Auerbach.

About the Embedded Content

Each QR code on the set of the performance links to a unique Glasser-related space, primarily via QR scanners on mobile phones.
They are a series of online 3D "zones" developed by Mitch Trale with Glasser. The zones create an added visual layer to the experience while also being a portal for content. While it was initially only accessible through the QR codes, it's now embeddable for you and whoever else to post around and share. You can get the album cheap, download mp3s, view a music vid and watch the performance itself. Hope you have as much psychedelic/next-level fun messing around in this zone as we did conceiving and executing this whole crazy idea.

The best part is that the experience lives on after the show. Hopefully people will continue to discover and share the codes long after the broadcast is over.

Glasser – Pitchfork POV video, new European tour dates

Earlier this year Pitchfork filmed Glasser playing at CMJ as part of their #Offline festival, resulting in the above video. What you might notice is the option of choosing your camera angle, as there were 6 in the room you can select to watch each one individually, or all of them together (as seen above), allowing you to play director of the performance.

They run through the songs 'Tremel', 'Home' and 'Mirrorage', all taken from this years debut album Ring. You can head over to Pitchfork to see the videos now.

After taking a well-deserved break from touring over the new year, Glasser will head back to Europe for their most extensive tour there yet.

Glasser LIVE "Treasury of We" at Carriage House

When making the Glasser album, Cameron Mesirow called up a few of her LA-based friends to pepper bits of wind-intruments, strings, drums, percussion, sarangi and everything in between over her compositions. However, faced with trying to shove a miniature orchestra into her car for tours, Cameron had to decide between playing in front of a computer/ipod or coming up with something better. She worked with the members of her new band, Van Rivers, Jon Leland, and Jason McMahon to create a synthesized way: wherein samples and synths can be run through real guitars and real drums set up as MIDI controllers. The video below and schematic above should explain it better than we can since it's pretty awesome. If you're curious about what specific instruments/synths/controllers the band is using there is a complete list of them at the end of the video.

That said, if you really couldn't care less about the live setup, stick with the video for about a minute and a half and see an incredible live performance of the song "Treasury of We". Glasser is also currently on the road with this very setup, so catch them at some point. Tour dates below the vid.
