VIDEO: Shlohmo - "Beams"

A new song from Shlohmo's upcoming album Dark Red (out April 7) premiered earlier today. "Beams" was directed by Jack Irving.

Amazon: http://smarturl.it/Dark_Red

From True Panther: Directed by Jack Irv, the video for “Beams” intends to capture “the rawness and nostalgic carelessness we associate with being young,” says WeDidIt co-founder Nick Melons. He continues, “’Beams’ as a track demanded that. I came across the director on Vine – he was documenting his days and nights in New York through six-second videos that looked like a modern day Kids shot entirely through an iPhone. We decided to attempt a collaboration, so he would send over batches of tiny clips from which we stitched together the video for ‘Beams.’”

Shlohmo is also taking off on an extensive world tour soon. Full list of dates below.

Shlohmo “Buried” (Official Video) + Euro Tour Dates

In Dean's words:

Shlohmo has said that his forthcoming full-length album, Dark Red, is intended to be “devastating and violent” that “forces you to feel something even if that something isn’t good.” Today, he makes good on his promise with the video for new single “Buried,” depicting a surreal, complicated and bloody nightmare that takes place on the gritty, blacker than black, abandoned and desperate streets of Los Angeles, the artist’s hometown. Directed by Lance Drake, the clip casts a sinister shadow over the circle of life and death, giving a new symbolism to the album’s title, Dark Red.

Dark Red is out April 7, 2015.

SHLOHMO - 'Dark Red' out April 7, Stream New Single "Buried"

In Dean's words:

Dark Red is the second full-length album from Shlohmo, aka 25 year-old Los Angeles native Henry Laufer. The record is an uncanny marriage of his ever-evolving, richly textured sound with shades of ’90s IDM, R&B, cassette-tape Jungle, and, in an unexpected turn, sludge metal. “It sounds like if Electric Wizard tried to make an R&B record,” he says, “or Boards of Canada meets Burzum by the River Styx.”

Shlohmo’s music thus far exists in the poles between the subtly textured tracks of Bad Vibes and the booming sinister synths and hi-hats of his production work and remixes (such as his split EP with Jeremih, Banks’ “Brain”, remixes for Drake + The Weeknd). Dark Red utilizes Shlohmo’s existing palate but also mines the noises and imperfections inherent in analog production and naturally damaged sounds. Side-stepping current trends that lean towards pristine, computer-generated production, Dark Red explores natural distortion, fuzz and noise as compositional tools, intentionally distressing sounds to echo the feeling of the icy menace and emotional charge found on early black metal tapes. The result is a deeply personal listen, Shlohmo’s boldest statement yet.

This isn’t an album which fades into the shadows. The eerie, squalling synths of “Ten Days of Falling” usher in a world of phosphorescent disintegration and decay; from the looming claustrophobia of new single “Buried” to the minimalist pindrop orchestration of “Remains” and the carnal hum of “Ditch”, there is palpable anxiety and discord. “Relentless” and “Slow Descent” explore an internal sense of pain and sorrow that adds a stark emotional charge to the record.

Laufer explains:

“When I started working on Dark Red about two and a half years ago, I had just moved back to LA and built a small studio in my apartment, mostly with my dad’s old gear from the 80s. I had just lost some people close to me and was dealing with another loved one’s health issues. I was all over the place mentally, and I think it reflects in this record whether I like it or not.

The only thing I did know going into it, was that I wanted this one to be loud, and not just loud but really really f***ing loud. I wanted the sound of the thing to be devastating and violent. Recordings that force you to feel something even if that something isn’t good. I’m proud to have made something polarizing, a record that’s strong and undeniable even in its moments of pure anxiety and confusion. It’s tragic and painful at times, but that’s all part of it and I want that to be heard and felt. You don’t have to like it, just listen to it.”

Shlohmo Signs to True Panther, Releases New Single Today on True Panther/WeDidIt + Live North American Tour Announced for Spring 2015

Another announcement from True Panther this afternoon, in Dean's words:

Waking up from a miraculous dream…pinching ourselves…only to realize that it’s true.

We’re somehow fortunate enough to welcome one of our favorite young producers in the entire world to True Panther Sounds : Shlohmo born Henry Laufer. We will be releasing his forthcoming music alongside our friends, Wedidit, Shlohmo’s homegrown imprint.

As a gentle introduction to this celestial coupling we’re happy to share the first new original solo music from Shlohmo in quite some time, a single called “Emerge From Smoke”.

We printed up 1000 copies on a 7? that features a physical-only b-side called “Ode 2 Tha Whip”.

Pre-order Emerge From Smoke 7? HERE
buy Emerge From Smoke on iTunes

Shlohmo’s sound has evolved in ways that are difficult to describe. His unique approach to production seems as steeped in sludge metal as it is in drum & bass, as much IDM as it is R&B. It is somewhere deep within this sonic collage that he has carved out a distinct and celebrated voice in the electronic music space. His production on BANKS’ 2014 single “Brain,” and his sought-after remixes and crossover style, as witnessed in this year’s collaborative release with Jeremih, are further evidence of his immense talent and wide scope of influence.

Next spring also signifies a return to the stage for Shlohmo with a massive headlining national tour, his first with a live band, with more details on its setup to emerge in the new year. With Shlohmo’s new approach to his live set, new label home and new single “Emerge From Smoke,” Shlohmo’s 2015 marks a very exciting and distinct musical direction with a big announcement to follow after the holidays.
