Horsegirl - Behind The Songs, Pt. VI

"Homage To Birdnoculars"

"Bllly"

Well, the day we hoped would never come has arrived. We've reached the conclusion of Horsegirl's "Behind The Songs" series in which they discuss the 12 songs on the trio's 'Versions Of Modern Performance'.  We could keep doing these, however it will either require delving into the album's Japan CD bonus tracks or making Gigi, Nora and Penelope write an entirely new album.  The former feels a little gratuitous, the latter entirely within the realm of our working relationship however IT'S WAY TOO EARLY.  You're pretty unreasonable.

Out Today : Julien Baker - 'B-Sides' EP

(photo : Alyssa Gafkjen)

Today Julien Baker has released a new EP 'B-Sides'. Intimate and emotional, the 3 never-before-heard songs were taken from the recording sessions for her critically heralded third full-length 'Little Oblivions'. The EP was preceded by the song "Guthrie", which Clash called “extraordinarily beautiful”, while The New York Times described it as " a quietly harrowing postscript to 'Little Oblivions'”.

Lucy Dacus - "Partner in Crime" / "Believe" (Cher) - Spotify Singles

Stream / Purchase Home Video

Today, fresh off her performance at Pitchfork Music Festival, Lucy Dacus unveils her contribution to the Spotify Singles series: a reworked studio rendition of Home Video standout, “Partner in Crime,” and a cover of Cher’s “Believe,” a “huge, expansive, beautiful, heart-pumping, excitement-inducing song,” says Dacus, and “iconic for its use of auto-tune.” Despite this distinct use of auto-tune in both “Believe” and the original “Partner in Crime,” Dacus’ new versions remove the auto-tune and scale back the production, bringing each songwriter’s prowess to the forefront. “I feel like some of my favorite lyrics that I’ve written are in ‘Partner in Crime’ and maybe they aren’t as noticeable because the effect takes you out of it a little bit,” Dacus says. “So, I just wanted to strip it bare and showcase the song for what it is without any tricky production moves.”

“‘Partner in Crime’ was partially inspired by ‘Believe,’ so I thought it’d be nice to pair them together. I love Cher’s voice and how low it gets. The timbre of her voice is so unique, you can recognize it anywhere. Even with the autotune, you can tell that it’s Cher and nobody else. But, on our cover, taking away the autotune, I feel like you can tell that the structure of the song is very special and I did feel myself accidentally wanting to become Cher when I was doing vocal takes. It could never happen, but I love a low voiced pop legend.”

Horsegirl - "World Of Pots & Pans", "The Guitar Is Dead 3" (Behind The Songs Pt. V)

If for no other reasons than Horsegirl's 'Versions Of Modern Performance' featuring no more than 12 songs, our Behind The Songs feature in which Gigi, Nora and Penelope unpacking the stories and inspirations behind the album's compositions, will eventually come to a conclusion. Perhaps an unceremonious one.

Matador Revisionist History Podcast - Episode 7: Yo La Tengo

Stream Episode 7 of The Matador Revisionist History Podcast

Pre-order I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One on limited yellow vinyl

In April, Yo La Tengo’s landmark 1997 album I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One celebrated its 25th anniversary.

In this latest episode of our Matador Revisionist History podcast, the band – Georgia Hubley, Ira Kaplan, and James McNew – joins label co-owner Gerard Cosloy to discuss the record’s history and singular standing within the YLT oeuvre. “We know this is considered a key part of the arc,” explains Kaplan. “If we’re at the merch table and somebody is asking, ‘I don’t have any of your records, which one should I get?’ we know this is the right answer. Whether we feel that way or not, we know we’re supposed to recommend this record.”

Further reminiscences include the origin of The Condo Fucks, how a fake Brian Brain tribute album spiraled into real-life drama, and why the working title of “The Lie and How We Told It” was “The Hard Singing Song.” Listen HERE.

Our limited-edition yellow vinyl reissue of I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One will be out July 29 (US/CA, Aug 12 ROW). Pre-order HERE. We have also posted a digital deluxe version of the album, which includes the band’s 1997 Peel Session and remixes of “Autumn Sweater” by µ-Ziq, Kevin Shields, and members of Tortoise. Find that HERE.

Matador’s team of archivists have also unearthed an extended cut of the “Sugarcube” video. The clip was directed by Phil Morrison and stars David Cross and Bob Odenkirk, creators of the legendary comedy sketch series, Mr. Show. For added context, the band also recorded a conversation with Cross reflecting on the making of the video and its legacy, which you can view HERE.

Horsegirl - Behind The Songs, Pt. IV

"Electrolocation"

"Option 8"

OK, here we go again.  More inquisitions, more detailed information about 2 superb tracks from Horsegirl's 'Versions Of Modern Performance'.  Frankly, I'm sick to death of this "Behind The Songs" stuff and next time Horsegirl are in the office, we're gonna do "IN FRONT OF THE SONGS".  It's EASY to explain the inspirations and ideas behind songs that have already been completed. We wanna know about songs they've not written or recorded or even thought of yet.  Look for that series on YouTube, coming soon (or not).

Horsegirl - Behind The Songs, Pt. II

We have this habit of making artists-vists-to-the-office sound super exciting but in reality we force them to sit in front of a camera for HOURS discussing their most recent works. It's unlikely Horsegirl will tolerate such impositions when their second Matador album rolls around, so in the meantime, let's enjoy their thoughts regarding 'Versions of Modern Performance''s "Live and Ski" and "Bog Bog 1".

Horsegirl - "Anti-glory" and "Beautiful Song" explained

Horsegirl recently took time out of their busy schedule to sit down in our New York offices and answer questions about 2 stand out tracks from "Versions Of Modern Performance', "Anti-glory" and "Beautiful Song". We appreciate their patience --- there's a long list of labelmates who pretend to get lost on the way to the building in order to avoid such things (we fell for the story about soundcheck starting at 10am once already --- a live music expert tells that almost never happens).

Belle and Sebastian have released live renditions of two tracks for Amazon Original: "Working Boy in New York City", taken from the group’s latest album 'A Bit of Previous' and "We Rule the School", previously heard on the band’s 1996 debut album 'Tigermilk', this time with vocals performed by rising Scottish pop pioneer Wuh Oh.
