Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights: The Tenth Anniversary Edition

Photo: Exum

Ten years ago, Interpol’s debut album seized the imagination of a generation. The spare, lean textures, darkly oblique lyrics and suave stage presence were entirely different from the bands who preceded them on the charts and the radio.

Now on November 19, we are commemorating Turn On The Bright Lights with a Tenth Anniversary Edition, fully remastered in a beautiful deluxe hardbound book with unreleased photos (48 pages in the CD, 28 large pages in the vinyl) and a second disc of bonus tracks, many unreleased, plus demos and B-sides and a DVD.

The album will be available as a double CD+DVD, double LP+DVD, and digital album with digital booklet. Preorders will come with a replica of the band's first piece of merchandise, a button with the original Interpol logo.

The band writes:
In 2002, we released our first album, Turn On the Bright Lights. We had waited close to five years for the opportunity to record an album. Needless to say this was a memorable moment for us. We never had any expectations for how the album would be received. We just wanted to present our music as an album to anyone who would be open to hearing it. It was incredible to finally tour and see people react to these songs. We never could have imagined that the album would have reached so many people throughout the world.

We spent a good deal of time this past year digging through our archives and asking others to dig through theirs in the hopes of uncovering some forgotten material. The result of our hunting and gathering has yielded this Tenth Anniversary Edition of Turn On the Bright Lights. We wanted to do something special for the fans who have always supported us. We wanted to do something special for the best fans in the world. We hope you enjoy it.

Sincerely yours,
Daniel Kessler

AC Newman - Brooklyn Record Release Gig/Party, October 8

"Want You To Know": A Short Film By James Blose set to the music of A.C. Newman's 'Shut Down The Streets'

Do I need to repeat the information listed above?  Quite possibly, if your eyesight sucks or you don't have one of those new fancy Retina displays (HINT HINT).  On Monday, October 8 our good friends at Brooklyn Vegan are presenting a bash to commemorate the following day's U.S. release of AC Newman's 'Shut Down The Streets' at The Rock Shop (249 4th Avenue, Brooklyn).    The evening is said to feature "a live performance, full album playback, drink specials, album giveaways, + more!" and I don't know about you, but it's the whole, " + more!" portion of the pitch that really has my curiosity piqued.   Surely a free AC Newman show would be enough to get you out of the house.  Throw in the drink specials, swag giveaways, etc. and this already sounds too good to be true.  But "more"?   Either we're promising more than one mere record release party can possibly deliver (hey, it wouldn't be the first time) or this truly is the can't miss event of early October, 2012 (in Brooklyn.  on weeknights). I don't think you wanna risk missing out on the latter. And the former already sounded pretty good to me.  In fact, if I see you there, I'll personally buy you a drink (keep in mind the room might be quite dark and my eyesight sucks).

You can score a free ticket to the 10/8 party by purchasing 'Shut Down The Streets' at one of the following NYC area independent shops.  The following stores will have the LP/CD in stock the weekend prior :

Other Music
Generation/Bleecker
Academy
Sound Fix
Ear Wax
Halcyon
Permanent
In Living Stereo
Rebel Rebel
Co Op

"Encyclopedia Of Classic Takedowns" (192 kbps MP3)

Pre-order 'Shut Down The Streets' on the LP, CD or digital formats from The Matador Store (first 300 LP's are on colored vinyl)

Light In The Attic hits the road...with some doucher we used to know

Venerable and esteemed American record-reissue label Light In The Attic has ventured out on the highways and byways of the Northwest and Pacific Coast regions to visit a whopping 58 record retail establishments - many of whom we at Matador and Matador Direct work with every day.

We salute LITA for their dedication to quality, curation, craftsmansip...and for giving former Matador warehouse troll Jon Treneff an excuse to make his internet comedy debut. Here's the first installment in LITA's roadtrip video series (cuz if you aren't doing content, you just can't be content) - check here for more video updates from LITA, and patronize America's great (and medium-great) record stores.

Green Day Out Buy Early Get Nows Us

[caption id="attachment_19745" align="alignright" width="193" caption="photo: Nabil Ayers "][/caption]

If Feist would finally confirm to host the first-ever "Christoper Pell Lombardi Awards For Excellence In Convoluted Marketing Schemes", the fourth installment of Buy Early Get Now (aka The New Ps "Box Of Air") would finally get its due in the Lifetime Achievement category.   (Note:  Dave Martin still maintains that only time will help folks discover BEGN #4's genius, and Dave knows both time and genius.)

So here we are, five years and two IHeartRadio Festivals later...and the majors have finally decided to embark on the trail toward customer confusion that we so dutifully blazed.   To wit, Green Day's foray into the world of selling futures in music.

And because other members of the Matador family have done a far better job lampooning Billie and friends, I'll leave only a link to this space where we can all watch customer ire unfold in real time:

Get To Know Your Local Independent Retailer Vol. 21 - Tres Gatos

Tres Gatos. Translation: Three Gatos. Or a killer New England shop that's one part record store, one part book seller, one part enoteca and one part tapas (tapash, if you wanna pronounce it correctly) joint. I'm pretty sure the coolest thing about Tres Gatos is how they let the customers DJ. I tried doing that at a Wendy's once and it didn't go over too well. I talked to store manager Phil Wilcox about Gatos, tacos, and winos. Dig it.

Tres Gatos
470 Centre Street
Jamaica Plain, MA
857 719 9294

1. Tell us briefly about your store.
Tres Gatos is a Spanish style tapas restaurant and wine bar in the front, first rate record and bookstore in the back, While we do stock used vinyls, CDs and books, we specialize in new titles, ranging from the latest bestsellers to obscure or cult choices. Guests at the bar are encouraged to request music, bring in vinyl from home to play during dinner, or bring drinks back to the store and hang out. The idea, one which sounded odd at first but has happily caught on, is to feel like you're over a friends house for a dinner party, enjoying great food and drink and exploring a curated record and book collection.

2. What got you into the independent record store business?
I was lucky enough to meet David Doyle, the owner of Rhythm and Muse, the store he operated for years before expanding into Tres Gatos. It seemed to me that he had a passion, and a flair for knowing his customers and what they wanted. When I'd go out in Jamaica Plain, I'd see people with vinyl or books under their arms that David had sold them and it seemed to me that he was a trendsetter for our little corner of heaven in Boston. I wanted to do that too. And so I came on board as a clerk at the old store, and when Tres Gatos opened, David gave me the gift that every nerd from the suburbs wants - the chance to run a book and record store, and one with a bar in it to boot!

3. Who are some of your favorite contemporary stores?
New England has so many great stores, with different themes and strengths and followings. I love Stax Of Wax in Provincetown for prices, Bull Moose in Maine for selection-Mystery Train in Gloucester, MA for the same reasons. Nuggets on Commonwealth Ave in Boston is a landmark, too. Same for Cheapo Records in Central Square.

4. How have things been going from a business perspective?
We've been lucky enough to have a solid neighborhood following and regulars who get us through the tough months. We operate in a place with a massive college and undergrad population and the kids love records, but when they go away during the summer it is our neighborhood regulars that pull us through. The restaurant brings in all sorts of business from all over the state and New England, and we've received some great press. We opened in February 2011, but I don't think we hit our stride until December of that year. Since then, the business has been steadily growing, and Record Store Day 2012 was the busiest day we've ever had.

5. What do you think spells the survival for an independent record store today?
I think you need to be a friend. I think you need to be a place where people want to go, hang out, have a beer, spin a vinyl, hang out, and eventually, you'll build up a connection where any record these folks need, they'll come to you. It'll turn back the clock and make the idea of a download simply silly, but only if you build up a rapport and a mutual respect. They go out of their way to come to you, you have to go out of your way for them. The days of the lazy clerk behind the desk reading the paper is over. You need to open up a dialogue. And also, stock interesting things. Stock the hits, the no-brainers, but also things that are odd, conversation pieces, hard to come by. Things not just for the classic 'collector' but also for the casual fan who wants something to show off.

6. What are some of the coolest thing labels have done with you? Instores? Promotions? Sales?
We have such a multi-purpose space here. Admittedly, we haven't done that much directly with labels as far as promotions go although the odd promo record or t-shirt is always nice. We've tried our hand at having live music events, and its been a success. Rock, jazz, blues, flamenco guitar, all sorts of things. We've also had some in-store book events and signings.

7. Why do we need record stores?
We have to try to keep some things tangible in this world, and to keep some places as meetinghouses, forums and hang outs for all the misfits out there. Record stores tie a community together. We have a guy in a business suit talking about blues with a kid with cut off sleeves, covered in tattoos, on a nightly basis. Its amazing. I'm 24, so I'm right on the border for this, but I am part of the last generation who knew the novelty, the excitement, the fun of waiting around for a song you wanted to come on the radio. The joy when it came on, the dash to the tape-recorder, always missing the beginning of the song, to get it recorded. You were young, couldn't afford CDs, couldn't get a ride to the mall and there were no downloads. Music just seemed more special. Record stores keep it special. When someone comes who doesn't know what they're looking for and then they find it - Nico or Dusty Springfield or some Ornette Coleman record - and they light up, it's so great to watch. It means alot more then clicking a few buttons on a computer and getting instant gratification.

8. What kind of taco is your favorite?
Crunchy, and full of meat. A soft taco is just a burritos boring cousin. And never fish.

9. Who are your top 3 favorite bands right now?
I'm big into the new Magnetic Fields record, I'm loving the new Justin Townes Earle, I think Dr. John's latest might be the best record of the year so far. I'm listening to all sorts of stuff. My most listened to list right now would be Chet Baker, Destroyer, Love, The Zombies, Tom Waits, a bunch of other stuff. This is an amazing time for music. Great music is coming from every direction.

10. What is your favorite thing about your store? And you can't say the customers. That's like saying Einstein or Ghandi when asked "If you could meet one person, living or dead..."
I love looking out and seeing people drinking, talking about music, hanging out. It really is like a house party. People come in as a couple, or a group of four, and end up sitting, and eating, with three or four new people, just because they ALSO like Delta Spirit or Miles Davis or whoever. A lot of relationships start here. A couple who got married dropped us a line to say we were a first date. It's more, hopefully, than a place to shop, or eat, but it's also a place to meet, to talk, to see and be seen. And I love the beer.

11. What are your goals for the future of your store? Long term and short.
In the short term I want to keep expanding our network and get people excited about music, about owning vinyl, turntables, make it a thing buzzed about around town. We've done pretty well on that front so far, I think. Long term, I want all of Boston to buy its records here. I want to beat online competitors, as well as Newbury Comics, the behemoth that has had, until now, somewhat of a monopoly on new records in New England. I want people to drive in from out of town, not to just shop, but to have an experiance, have a night. Eat delicious food, have good drinks, meet new friends, and buy some great records.

AC Newman - "Encyclopedia Of Classic Takedowns", The 2nd MP3 from 'Shut Down The Streets'

(of course, by "out now", we mean "out October 9")

As mentioned in this space a few weeks ago, on October 9 Matador will be releasing the 3rd A.C. Newman album, 'Shut Down The Streets'.   The '70's folk/pop-inflected masterpiece was dubbed "an album of understated elegance and strength" by one of our more insightful (and good-looking) executives, and here's another example of Carl''s musical & lyrical brilliance  to whet your appetite :

"Encyclopedia Of Classic Takedowns" (192 kbps MP3)

There's further recognition, by the way, for one of the continent's great songsmiths (or, if you prefer, songwriters).  Though I'm sworn to secrecy by a colleague (who is so many thousands of miles away, what's she going to do, yell at me?), I'm told one of your favorite New Pornographers songs  will be heard next month as the intro theme music for a popular new television comedy that may or may not feature group therapy as a central theme in the show.  It's not that new Charlie Sheen thing either, so let's not get into that.  There's loads of other places on the internet if all you want to do is complain about Charlie Sheen. He was alright in "Platoon" --- you think you could do better?

Pre-order 'Shut Down The Streets' on the LP, CD or digital formats from The Matador Store (first 300 LP's are on colored vinyl)

Tagine of chicken in tomato sauce

First, listen to the new A.C. Newman song while you start preparing the recipe.

This is an adaptation of tuna and tomato sauce from the Tagine Deck. The result is a sort of Moroccan version of puttanesca.

I did this in an unglazed tagine, but you could use a glazed tagine or just a saucepan or dutch oven.

1 lb chicken thighs, patted dry and slashed three times on the skin side
1 lemon's worth of juice
1 tsp salt
2 cups fresh or canned tomatoes, diced in their juice
1 tbs tomato paste
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 tbs fresh hyssop, chopped
1 preserved lemon, rinsed and pulp discarded, the remainder julienned
2 tbs capers, rinsed
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/8 tsp pimentón de la vera (dulce)
1/4 cup olive oil

Marinate the chicken in the lemon juice and salt, rubbing the mixtures into the meat and the slashes, for at least one hour at room temperature. Turn once during that time.

Meanwhile, prepare the other ingredients. Put the tomatoes and tomato paste in a skillet and cook at medium heat until reduced and saucy, at least 15 minutes. Add the garlic a few minutes before the tomatoes are ready. Stir in the hyssop, preserved lemon, capers, cayenne pepper and pimentón and cook for 5 minutes more or until the flavors are mingled.

Oil the tagine and arrange the marinated chicken thighs inside it. Add the sauce from the skillet and move the chicken pieces around until they are well coated. Slowly bring to a simmer, using a flame tamer if necessary for the health of the tagine, then cover and cook over very low heat until tender, about 45 minutes. Taste and adjust for salt.

(the original recipe called for 18 pitted black oil-cured olives as well, which I did not have on hand. I think they would make an excellent addition. be sure to coordinate your salt though because there are a lot of salty ingredients in this dish.)

Press Releases Of The Ailing Stars (Or, "Chavez Aren't Playing ATP")

(EDIITOR'S NOTE : the 24 hour rock news cycle isn't kind to stories of great seriousness, but we're hopeful the following will serve as a teaching moment of sorts for our younger readers, or the illiterate older people they hang out with. The memo below came to us via Chavez earlier today - GC)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
:

Chavez regrets to announce cancellation of their appearance at September 23's "I'll Be Your Mirror" / All Tomorrow's Parties in New York curated by Greg Dulli.

Suffering from what has been called "near lethal exhaustion" due to the band's heavy touring schedule, guitarist Clay Tarver has checked himself into The Serenities Treatment Center outside of Mesa, Arizona.

The band's management said only he will be receiving attention for issues he has battled for some time, and released a short statement from the famed guitarist: "I hope to catch my breath, face some demons, and come out kicking more ass than ever. You're the best."

Chavez asks "the number one fans in the world" to please respect Tarver's privacy at this delicate time.

Yo La Tengo - "Stupid Things" 12" / Digital EP Coming September 25

For the handful of you who haven't already read about this forthcoming Yo La Tengo release  (LIMITED on vinyl, UNLIMITED in digital fashion) and somehow require the label's affirmation of the EP's existence, rest assured, the most prominent music blogs in the world didn't get it wrong this time.   As hinted elsewhere, there's a brand new Yo La Tengo album nearing completion, recorded this summer in Chicago, IL with the production assistance of John McEntire. All we're willing to say on the record at this moment is that the album version of "Stupid Things" is substantially different than the earlier recording found on the new EP.  Further bean-spilling about the new album  (perhaps from us this time around) will be presented for your approval in the days and weeks ahead.  Until then, here's our webstore blurb for "Stupid Things", the vinyl version of which isn't gonna be available for long. - GC
The first new music from Yo La Tengo since 2009’s Popular Songs. “Stupid Things” is a different version of a song that will be appearing on their new album coming out in 2013.

This limited-edition 12” contains the original version of “Stupid Things,” with a vocal completely different from the upcoming album version, along with a clashing, chaotic & randomly beautiful remix by EYE of the Boredoms.

The B-side contains the full original 12-minute long instrumental of the track, awash with gorgeous “Autumn Sweater” style organ and some of Ira Kaplan’s most impressivel guitar improvisations to date.

Cut at 45 RPM and housed in a heavy cardstock silkscreen sleeve, this strictly limited-edition of 1500 copies is numbered on the back and will be an essential buy for all Yo La
Tengo fans, THE REMAINDER OF WHOM WILL BE FUCKED.
