Circuit des Yeux (Haley Fohr) has released a new single and video taken from her Matador Records debut, '-io', out October 22nd. “Vanishing” is Circuit des Yeux at her most colossal, with driving strings that border on Bond theme-esque, leading to a howling chorus refrain with Fohr’s sonorous 4-octave voice at center stage. The self-directed video for “Vanishing” sees her veering between different personas and backdrops, channelling the multifaceted drama, absurdity and apocalypse which underpin the new album.
Fohr says:
Vanishing is an account of climate change and loss through the final stage of grief.
In this video I embody our evolving consciousness toward Earth and its health by representing four characters.
Lemonade Lady is the evasive optimist who is unwilling to acknowledge her changing surroundings.
Prepared Weather Person is the anxious prepper; ready for the worst and isolated by fear.
The Mortal Sufferer gets blown away in a field and serves as evidence that us corporeal beings are at the behest of our environment.
And Worm Girl personifies the stoic reality that all things human undoubtedly decompose in time.

Circuit des Yeux has also announced European and North American tour dates for 2022. The live band, consisting of Fohr (vocals, guitar, sampler), Ashley Guerrero (drums), Andrew Scott Young (contrabass) and Whitney Johnson (viola), will be joined on select dates by a string section. This includes a special performance at the Barbican Centre’s Milton Court Concert Hall accompanied by a quintet of soloists from the London Contemporary Orchestra on April 6th. Tonight, Spoon will perform a sold out surprise show at the Teragram in Los Angeles. Following their show at the Hollywood Bowl with St. Vincent last Friday night, the instant sell-out marks Spoon’s first club show in Los Angeles in many years. Wanting to give fans who couldn’t get a ticket - both in Los Angeles and around the world - a chance to see this special event, Spoon are presenting the live concert event “Back to Life // Live From Los Angeles” on October 28 and 29 via the social live media platform Moment House. Tickets are onsale now for $15 and are available here and will feature exclusive merch bundles available with purchase. The concert will air on October 28 at 6pm PT in North and South America. In Asia, Australia and New Zealand it airs at 6pm JST on October 29 and in Europe, the UK and Africa at 6pm BST on the 29th.
Spoon’s set will cull from their entire catalog but they will also be debuting some brand new songs from the Austin recording sessions the band undertook over the last couple of years, of which Britt Daniel told Rolling Stone drew from the strength of the band’s live show ““My thought was to take that energy and make a record with it.”

At this very moment, Algiers are halfway through a full U.S. tour – the band’s first since the release of its third full-length, 'There Is No Year', in January of 2020.
For those seeking to preview the group’s current on-stage energies, we bring you “Algiers: TV Party.” It’s a 20-minute live set, which was filmed last fall and includes performances of “Void,” “Cleveland,” “Losing is Ours,” and “Death March.”
"This set was loosely inspired by the music performances on Glenn O'Brien's famed late 70s/early 80s NYC public access television show,” explains Lee Tesche. “It was filmed in a TV studio using the same analogue equipment."

Back in July of this year, Brisbane trio The Goon Sax released their much-admired third album and Matador Records debut, 'Mirror II'. They return today with a video for the song “Temples,” which features James Harrison on lead vocals. The band will also join Snail Mail on a run of U.S. tour dates this spring.
"'Temples' is a song that I wanted to be overwhelmingly pretty and a bit nostalgic. It sort of reminds me of an epic biopic or a scripted love letter.
When writing the lyrics, I was trying to surmise a romance in its entirety rather than as a self-contained moment. That's why I think the romanticism is a bit unbelievable. And why I felt like I was in a dream state when I wrote it.
The lyrics are referential to The Wind and The Willows as well as Tim Buckley. The video takes inspiration from Joanna Newsom's clip for 'Divers' as well as a scene from the 2000’s Kanye West clip 'All Falls Down'". - James Harrison

Mdou Moctar - "Afrique Victime - The Documentary"

The global pandemic trapped Mdou Moctar and his band in their home country of Niger. They could not leave to promote their upcoming album, Afrique Victime. Instead, American bassist Mikey Coltun flew to Niger, carrying cameras and recording equipment. Shortly after Mikey arrived, it became clear that it was too dangerous to travel within Niger due to the presence of guerrilla groups such as Boko Haram, which have come to prominence in the country's power vacuum. So Mdou, Mikey, Ahmoudou and Souleyman met in Niamey, the capital. It was their first time together as a band since they played over 200 concerts worldwide in 2019.
Today, Mdou Moctar releases Afrique Victime – The Documentary. Navigating complex world and regional geo-political circumstances, the film touches on the environment, inspiration, stories, challenges and singular musical and personal alchemy behind one of today’s most electrifying and trailblazing groups.

Today, Snail Mail (Lindsey Jordan) announces Valentine, her new album out November 5th via Matador. To mark the occasion, she has released the title track, “Valentine,” and its outrageous period drama companion video directed by Josh Coll. A hugely anticipated follow-up, Valentine was written and produced by 22-year-old Lindsey Jordan and co-produced by Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Waxahatchee). Written in 2019-2020 the album is filled with romance, heartbreak, blood, sweat and tears. But Valentine is poised and self-possessed, channeling its anger and dejection into empowering revenge fantasies and rewriting the narrative of its own fate. Stitched throughout it is the melodrama and the camp Jordan so deftly utilizes to offset her pain. The sonic leap forward can be heard from the first moments of the title track – the whispered voice and eerie sci-fi synths erupting into a full-on stadium-sized adrenaline-rush of a chorus. From there it’s all go – with digitized electronic inflected anthems, swooning baroque FM rockers, smoldering slow-jam R&B and some of the most gorgeous and heart-rending finger-picked guitar ballads this side of Elliott Smith. The star of the show however is Lindsey’s voice – no longer the prodigal wunderkind, her vocals and words are rawer, deeper, snarlier and more feeling than ever before.
Snail Mail has also announced a worldwide tour including US runs both in the fall of 2021 and the spring of 2022, with UK and European dates kicking off in February of 2022. Following Valentine’s release, her US dates begin on November 27th in Richmond, VA at The National. In February, Snail Mail will head to the UK and EU for 20 stops including London at the O2 Forum Kentish Town on February 23rd, Le Trabendo in Paris on February 25th and wrapping up at Paradiso Noord in Amsterdam on March 16th. She’ll return to North America on April 5th hitting major venues across the country including Kings Theatre in Brooklyn on April 7th, the Riviera Theatre in Chicago on April 14th and the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles on April 27th.

On her 2018 debut album Lush, seventeen-year-old Lindsey Jordan sang “I’m in full control / I’m not lost / Even when it’s love / Even when it’s not”. Her natural ability to be many things at once resonated with a lot of people. The contradiction of confidence and vulnerability, power and delicacy, had the impact of a wrecking ball when put to tape. It was an impressive and unequivocal career-making moment for Jordan.
On Valentine, her sophomore album out November 5th on Matador, Lindsey solidifies and defines this trajectory in a blaze of glory. In 10 songs, written over 2019-2020 by Jordan alone, we are taken on an adrenalizing odyssey of genuine originality in an era in which "indie" music has been reduced to gentle, homogenous pop composed mostly by ghostwriters. Made with careful precision, Valentine shows an artist who has chosen to take her time. The reference points are broad and psychically stirring, while the lyrics build masterfully on the foundation set by Jordan’s first record to deliver a deeper understanding of heartbreak.
On “Ben Franklin”, the second single of the album, Jordan sings “Moved on, but nothing feels true / Sometimes I hate her just for not being you / Post rehab I’ve been feeling so small / I miss your attention, I wish I could call”. It’s here that she mourns a lost love, conceding the true nature of a fleeting romantic tie-up and ultimately, referencing a stay in a recovery facility in Arizona. This 45-day interlude followed issues stemming from a young life colliding with sudden fame and success. Since she was not allowed to bring her instruments or recording equipment, Jordan began tabulating the new album arrangements on paper solely out of memory and imagination. It was after this choice to take radical action that Valentine really took its unique shape.
Jordan took her newfound sense of clarity and calm to Durham, North Carolina, along with the bones of a new album. Here she worked with Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Waxahatchee). For all the album’s vastness and gravity, it was in this small home studio that Jordan and Cook chipped away over the winter of early 2021 at co-producing a dynamic collection of genre-melding new songs, finishing it triumphantly in the spring. They were assisted by longtime bandmates Ray Brown and Alex Bass, as well as engineer Alex Farrar, with a live string section added later at Spacebomb Studios in Richmond.
Leaning more heavily into samples and synthesizers, the album hinges on a handful of remarkably untraditional pop songs. The first few seconds of opener and title track ‘Valentine’ see whispered voice and eerie sci-fi synth erupt into a stadium-sized, endorphin-rush of a chorus that is an overwhelming statement of intent. “Ben Franklin”, “Forever (Sailing)” and “Madonna” take imaginative routes to the highest peaks of catchiness. Jordan has always sung with a depth of intensity and conviction, and the climactic pop moments on Valentine are delivered with such a tenet and a darkness and a beauty that’s noisy and guttural, taking on the singularity that usually comes from a veteran artist.
As captivating as the synth-driven songs are, it’s the more delicate moments like “Light Blue”, “c.et. al.” and “Mia” that distill the albums range and depth. “Baby blue, I’m so behind / Can’t make sense of the faces in and out of my life / Whirling above our daily routines / Both buried in problems, baby, honestly” Jordan sings on “c. et. al.” with a devastating certainty. These more ethereal, dextrously finger-picked folk songs peppered in throughout the album are nuanced in their vocal delivery and confident in their intricate arrangement. They come in like a breath of air, a moment to let the mind wander, but quickly drown the listener in their melodic alchemy and lyrical punch.
The album is rounded out radiantly by guitar-driven rock songs like “Automate”, “Glory” and “Headlock”. Reminiscent of Lush but with a marked tonal shift, Jordan again shows her prowess as a guitar player with chorus-y leads and rhythmic, wall-of-sound riffs. “Headlock” highlights this pivot with high-pitched dissonance and celestially affected lead parts – “Can’t go out I’m tethered to / Another world where we’re together / Are you lost in it too?”, she sings with grit and fatigue, building so poignantly on her sturdy foundation of out-and-out melancholy. On Valentine, we are taken 100 miles deeper into the world Jordan created with Lush, led through passageways and around dark corners, landing somewhere we never dreamed existed.
Today, in the wake of recording Valentine, Jordan is focused on trying to continue healing without slowing down. The album comes in the midst of so much growth, in the fertile soil of a harrowing bottom-out. On the heels of life-altering success, a painful breakup and 6 weeks in treatment, Jordan appears vibrant and sharp. “Mia, don’t cry / I love you forever / But I gotta grow up now / No I can’t keep holding onto you anymore” she sings on the album closer “Mia”. She sings softly but her voice cuts through like a hacksaw. The song is lamenting a lost love, saying a somber goodbye, and it closes the door on a bitter cold season for Jordan. Leaving room for a long and storied path, Valentine is somehow a jolt and a lovebuzz all at once.

Today, we bring you the second look at Circuit des Yeux’s Matador Records debut, -io. With sweeping strings and ornate vocal arrangements, “Sculpting the Exodus” brings the scale of the album’s ambition into sharp focus. The video was filmed in Chicago during the same session that yielded -io’s cover image, which captures vocalist/composer Haley Fohr suspended in void. To accomplish the shoot, Fohr trained with stunt coordinator Talin Chat (The Mandalorian) to perform a series of 5-7’ free-falls on camera.

What is Sculpting the Exodus?
It is devotion. It is the well.
It is my grandmother going into hospice, writhing in pain.
It is reality exploding on an island made of sand. It is depression and the isolation of deep grief.
I was trapped in a choir of myself with nothing to grab onto but echoes of past selves.
It obliterated my heart until the only working parts of me were the appendages furthest from my mind.

Pavement 2022 UK/EU Dates

photo : Tarina Westlund[/caption]Back in 2010, we advised that Pavement’s reunion tour – the band’s first round of dates since its breakup in 1999 – was “not a prelude to additional jaunts and/or a permanent reunion.”
We were wrong, though (sorry!): A decade removed from its second “final” show in Buenos Aires, Pavement will reconvene for performances in the UK and Europe during the fall of 2022. As previously announced, they will also headline ES Primavera Sound Barcelona & Porto 2022. A full itinerary and on-sale times can be found below. Tickets will be available at pavementband.com
Pavement are Mark Ibold, Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg, Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich and Steve West. Among the most beloved acts to come out of the American underground in the 1990’s, the band released five era-defining albums – 'Slanted And Enchanted' (1992), 'Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain' (1994), 'Wowee Zowee' (1995), 'Brighten The Corners' (1997) and 'Terror Twilight' (1999) – before disbanding in 1999. Pavement’s 2010 reunion saw them play four sold out shows in Central Park and top the bills of festivals worldwide including Primavera Sound, and Pitchfork.
What went down during the intervening decade? A fair amount of fantasy sports, probably. Pavement also saw a b-side, “Harness Your Hopes,” turn into an improbable algorithmic “hit” on digital platforms. The band’s catalog – previously split between Matador, Domino, Drag City, and Treble Kicker imprints – is now available worldwide from Matador.
That music remains untouchable. And eventually, we’ll surely celebrate it with an extravagant package of some sort or another – perhaps one of the band’s canonical and not-yet-reissued LPs. Who knows, though? Clearly, we’re not at the top of our game prediction-wise.

Today, Julien Baker releases 'Little Oblivions Remixes', which sees tracks from her critically acclaimed album 'Little Oblivions 'reworked by notable contemporaries personally selected by Baker. The EP features contributions from singer-songwriter Half Waif, celebrated electronic composer Helios, Australian folktonica songwriter Gordi, Oakland artist and producer Thao, and UK experimental and industrial metal artist Jesu (Justin K. Broadrick).

Thao also contributed to the EP by way of her remix of ‘Ziptie’ and notes, “I was immediately drawn to ‘Ziptie’ for Julien's beautiful melodies and haunting, arresting imagery. I knew I wanted to create a lot of different additional sounds and melodies inspired by the lyrics. I pictured a sort of post-apocalyptic, incredulous, acerbic, off-kilter and morose dance party (one of my top 3 dance party themes). I programmed rough sketches of the drum parts and built out the track with synths, bass, guitar, and drum machines. I asked my friend and incredible drummer Jason Slota to record live parts. I edited and patched segments of his drums, and then glued everything together with more synths and vocals. It was an immense pleasure to immerse myself in such beautiful vocal tracks, and I wanted to bring them to the fore as much as possible. I'm so happy I got to remix this song. Thank you Julien!"
