Yo La Tengo - 'Murder In The Second Degree' CD's Now Available (From Them, Not Us)

YLT2-high-res-for-SD-300-1

The long-awaited sequel to 'Yo La Tengo Is Murdering The Classics' is finally available. From Yo La Tengo.com :

We're Back, Back in the New York Groove

We can think of no more apt a headline for this second edition of "highlights" of our annual appearance on WFMU. Admittedly, the station resides in Jersey City, not New York, and among the many beats deployed within, all fall safely outside of the category of "groove." Yet apt is apt. You better believe it.

So impressive is Adrian Tomine's cover art that it is entirely possible that you, the prospective purchaser, are unfamiliar with what will unfold for the next 76 minutes should you be so rash as to part with your hard-earned money. For the last 20 years (and counting), Yo La Tengo, accompanied by cub reporter Bruce Bennett, have performed live on WFMU during their fundraising Marathon, and in return for listeners' pledges of support, we have attempted to play their requests, with no prior knowledge of what those requests will be, and without utilizing any of the many web sites that provide lyrics and chords. We rely instead on a lifetime of listening and the forgiveness of our audience.

As with this volume's predecessor, we will not tell you what songs are essayed. A track listing that includes, say, "Rock and Roll All Nite," "Rock and Roll Love Letter" and "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo" (one of which is here; the other two have never been requested) will all but demand imagining how it might sound, and you will be wrong. As listeners familiar with Yo La Tengo Is Murdering the Classics already know, but you will learn the hard way: There are endless ways to ruin a song.

And let's all raise a glass of something non-alcoholic to WFMU's Gaylord Fields, who has either hosted or co-hosted us for all 20 (and counting) years.

We compiled Murder in the 2nd Degree years ago. Would it have made sense to tweak the contents, and add some more recent material? Undoubtedly. But that would require us to listen back to more of these performances. And as Half Japanese put it so aptly on "No More Beatlemania" (not included): "Once is enough."

Ayocote Morado beans

Attention! Please budget two days to cook these beans. They need a lot of time and care - but trust me, it's worth it. This recipe is U.V. (Unintentionally Vegan).

Ayocote-Morado-1

IMG_2679

Originally from Oaxaca, the big, meaty ayocote morado was one of the first cultivated crops of the New World. Get yours from a reliably fresh source such as Rancho Gordo.

THE DAY BEFORE: Soak 1 cup beans in 1 quart water with 1 tbs kosher or sea salt, 2 bay leaves, 1 tsp whole black peppercorns.

THE DAY OF, ABOUT 6-7 HOURS BEFORE YOU EAT:

neutral oil such as grapeseed
1/4 white onion, chopped
1/4 yellow onion, chopped
1 hot Italian-style cherry pepper, chopped, divided
2/3 medium-hot Italian style long (not bell) pepper, chopped
2 chiles de arbol, microwaved for 30 seconds, ground, divided
Greek oregano
1 1/2 tbs good tomato paste
salt
freshly ground black pepper

Saute all the onion in 1 tbs grapeseed oil till soft and starting to brown. Add 1/2 of the hot cherry pepper and all the Italian pepper and continue sauteing until cooked and aromatic. Add beans, their soaking water, plus enough extra water to cover beans by at least 2 inches. Add 1/2 the ground chiles de arbol, about 1 tsp salt, a good shake of oregano, stir well and bring to a boil.

Reduce heat and simmer 4-5 hours*. Keep a kettle of hot water ready to add extra water if necessary - the tips of the beans should remain submerged, but at the same time you want the liquid to reduce and get thicker, so don't dilute too much. During the process you will be monitoring the level of liquid, the doneness of the beans and the simmer rate (which should be more than "the occasional bubble" but should not be remotely close to boiling), so you will be spending a lot of time adjusting in the kitchen.

Toward the end, saute the rest of the cherry pepper in some oil, charring slightly if possible. Add with the tomato paste and the remainder of the ground chile de arbol. Taste for salt, correcting. Bring to a boil again and then simmer for at least another 30-45 minutes.

Taste to ensure the beans are creamy (not just starchy). Allow to sit at room temp for some time. Test again, and if starchy, bring to a boil again, with more water if necessary, and then simmer for another 30 minutes or so. Again allow to sit at room temp 30-45 minutes until perfect creaminess is attained.

Sauce should be rich, thick and brown. Serve over rice.

If reheating the next day: bring to a simmer slowly with a small splash of water. Refresh the beans with some more sauted chopped hot cherry pepper and about half of another roasted, ground chile de arbol. Repeat for every reheat. The beans will get better and better over the course of two weeks.

Note: Try to control the temptation to add extra ingredients. This is a bean with a huge personality of its own and you will want its flavor to dominate. Once you get this right, you will want more.

Serves 2.

* It can be difficult to keep the simmer going on the stove. If you can find the right temperature in your oven to keep it at a steady simmer (and this will take some checking, plus constantly opening and closing the oven door to check and occasionally add water will shift the temperature), you may get more consistent results, and in fact creamier beans - since the pot is warmed on all sides. In my oven, it works best at about 300-310F 425F and the lid half on.

Kim Gordon - "Murdered Out"

unnamed-2
unnamed-1-2

"Murdered Out"

Earlier this morning, NPR Music premiered "Murdered Out", the first single by Kim Gordon issued under her own name, recorded with producer Justin Raisen and Warpaint drummer Stella Mozgawa. The following are Kim's words on the subject :

Black matte spray.

When I moved back to LA I noticed more and more cars painted with black matte spray, tinted windows, blackened logos, and black wheels. This was something I had occasionally seen in the past, part of low-rider car culture. A reclaiming of a corporate symbol of American success, The Car, from an outsider’s point of view. A statement-making rejection of the shiny brand new look, the idea of a new start, the promise of power, and the freedom on the open road. Like an option on a voting ballot, "none of the above.”

“Murdered Out," as a look, is now creeping into mainstream culture as a design trend. A coffee brand. A clothing line. A nail polish color.

Black-on-black matte is the ultimate expression in digging out, getting rid of, purging the soul. Like a black hole, the supreme inward look, a culture collapsing in on itself, the outsider as an unwilling participant as the “It" look.

###

I met the uber talented Justin Raisen, the producer, offhandedly. He was working on a project with another artist and kept sending me tracks to listen to with the possibility of getting me to sing on one of them. When I learned I could make up my own lyrics, I was in. With the remaining bits of unused vocals, he started what would be "Murdered Out." Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint) plays drums, based on the trashy drums that Justin first laid down. I went back and did more vocals and guitar and we mixed it…"Murdered Out" was such a great surprise! Looking forward to our next collaboration.

From the True Panther Sounds corner, we have some news for you this morning. If you have not been enjoying it in full these last few minutes of summer, then what have you been doing?

In light of this announcement, Brainfeeder producer IGLOOGHOST has remixed "CRYBABY" for your listening pleasure. Quote from said producer below:

“THE ORIGINAL CRYBABY WAS PACKED FULL OF SOOO MANY MOMENTS THAT WERE SO NUTS TO ME SO I WAS RLLY EXCITED TO TRY & DO MY OWN LIL SPIN ON IT. MY REGULAR SOLO IGLOOGHOST STUFF IS USUALLY SUPER SATURATED & I GUESS THERE'S AN EMPHASIS ON FITTING AS MANY SOUNDS IN AS I CAN - BUT FOR THIS ABRA THINGY I RLLY WANTED TO DO SOMETHING REALLY RESTRAINED & MORE BASED ON SPEEDY LIL RECURRING SIMPLE MELODIES/MOTIFS. IN MY HEAD, IT SOUNDS LIKE A LITTLE WATER SPIRIT GIRL CRYING IN A ZEN GARDEN. ???"

THUMP premiered the remix and had said it added "futurist sheen" to the track. Stream here: http://smarturl.it/ABRA_Crybaby
