Out Today : Water From Your Eyes - 'Crushed By Everyone'

Out today, 'Crushed By Everyone' is a song-by-song rework of Water From Your Eyes’ critically-adored Matador debut, 'Everyone’s Crushed'.

Curated by band members Rachel Brown and Nate Amos, the album dips heavily into WFYE’s personal rolodex with contributions that map the duo’s rapidly expanding community – friends, tourmates, and peers. It’s the rare “remix” record where everybody has met in person (or at least shared some DMs). Kassie Krut twists the title track up amid tumbling kick drums and snare pops. Nourished by Time croons atop a chopped up and scrambled “True Life.” The record also finds Water From Your Eyes reinterpreting themselves, with Nate dialing Nu Metal grind and microtonal drone into an undeniably epic update on “Barley".

Earlier this month, Water From Your Eyes appeared as a musical guest on The Best Show, performing a five-song set.

In February, the band will be back on the road supporting Squid on a full US tour, performing in a newly-minted quartet lineup featuring live drums. Water From Your Eyes will conclude their Europe tour tonight with a performance at Primavera Weekender. The run has received rave reviews, with Pitchfork writing "If there’s still such a thing as distinctively New York cool, we were witnessing it."

Coming November 4 : Spoon vs. On-U Sound - 'Lucifer On The Moon'

Spoon - photo by Olivia Wolfe

Adrian Sherwood - photo by Harry Borden

"On The Radio" (Adrian Sherwood Reconstruction
directed by Britt Daniel

'Lucifer on the Moon' is the anti-gravity companion to Spoon’s 'Lucifer on the Sofa'. A top-to-bottom rework of the Austin band's tenth album, it was created by On-U Sound founder and UK dub icon, Adrian Sherwood.

The album will be released November 4th on LP and digital.

'Moon' first took shape as a few heady remixes for the singles from 'Lucifer on the Sofa'. Frontman Britt Daniel offered Sherwood two suggestions: “Avoid things that would not be possible on tape” and “Add whatever you want to add, the less modern the better.” The collaboration shouldn't come as a surprise: dub-inspired production is wound through Spoon’s classic tracks, from "Finer Feelings" to "Inside Out."  The initial results pleased both parties and Sherwood was invited to work on additional songs. And then a few more. “I got into the melody and the thoughts it evoked in me,” the producer explains. “It just evolved and we eventually found ourselves with a whole album.”

'Moon' flips 'Lucifer on the Sofa'’s rhythm tracks inside-out, and often rebuilds them wholesale. Sherwood supplied extensive additional instrumentation via On-U’s extended family of session players, including bassist Doug Wimbish and drummer Keith LeBlanc (both of whom performed in Sugarhill Records’ early ’80s in-house rhythm section). He dug deep into the album’s multi-tracks, surfacing forgotten details and elements not present in the final album mixes.

The result airlifts Spoon’s trademark melodies into lush alien terrain, replete with vibrant echo and rumbling low-end. “It wasn’t just a thing where you pick apart this and that and you stay on the grid and you add a delay,” explains Daniel. “He added so much more instrumentation to the tracks that they became completely different versions of the songs. Not just remixes, but companion pieces. A ‘Part II.’”

Spoon - "My Babe" Video, Adrian Sherwood Reconstruction

Today, you can watch the video for “My Babe.” It’s 'Lucifer On The Sofa''s  anthemic centerpiece – a genuine love song shot through with tenderness, optimism, and a touch of self-aware bravado.

The “My Babe” video takes inspiration from a short-lived late ’70s variety show hosted by the legendary country music producer and oddball poet, “Cowboy” Jack Clement. The clip is directed by Jamie-James Medina and stars Brad Leland ("Friday Night Lights"). On streaming services the song is backed with a reconstruction by dub pioneer Adrian Sherwood (above, photo by Harry Borden).

out today : Julien Baker - 'Little Oblivions Remixes'

Julien Baker, photo by Alysse Gafkjen

Today, Julien Baker releases 'Little Oblivions Remixes', which sees tracks from her critically acclaimed album 'Little Oblivions 'reworked by notable contemporaries personally selected by Baker. The EP features contributions from singer-songwriter Half Waif, celebrated electronic composer Helios, Australian folktonica songwriter Gordi, Oakland artist and producer Thao, and UK experimental and industrial metal artist Jesu (Justin K. Broadrick).

(stream / download 'Little Oblivions Remixes')
(stream/purchase 'Little Oblivions')

Thao also contributed to the EP by way of her remix of ‘Ziptie’ and  notes, “I was immediately drawn to ‘Ziptie’ for Julien's beautiful melodies and haunting, arresting imagery. I knew I wanted to create a lot of different additional sounds and melodies inspired by the lyrics. I pictured a sort of post-apocalyptic, incredulous, acerbic, off-kilter and morose dance party (one of my top 3 dance party themes). I programmed rough sketches of the drum parts and built out the track with synths, bass, guitar, and drum machines. I asked my friend and incredible drummer Jason Slota to record live parts. I edited and patched segments of his drums, and then glued everything together with more synths and vocals. It was an immense pleasure to immerse myself in such beautiful vocal tracks, and I wanted to bring them to the fore as much as possible. I'm so happy I got to remix this song. Thank you Julien!"

Julien Baker - "Ringside" (Gordi Remix)

Stream/download "Ringside" (Gordi Remix)

(photo  : Scott Kunkel, Eau Claires Festival, 2018)

In advance of tomorrow's release of Julien Baker's 'Little Oblivions Remixes' EP, this morning Baker has released a remix of the album's "Ringside", by Gordi.
“I first met Julien in Barcelona in 2017. I'd been a big fan for ages so it was a real pleasure to play a show with her. We spent a bunch of time together at Eaux Claires festival in 2018 making music - we even played an hour long improvised set together to a crowd of a thousand people from this treehouse that was like a huge musical instrument with lots of tiny loop pedal stations... it was as weird as it sounds. But because of the way we think about chords and melodies and songwriting, we could really connect on the fly and make something beautiful. I loved having the opportunity to dig through the stems on this new Julien track and reimagine it.”

Julien Baker - "Favor "(Jesu Remix)

Earlier this month, Julien Baker announced the September 1st release of the  'Little Oblivions Remixes'EP, which sees tracks from her critically acclaimed album 'Little Oblivions' reworked by notable contemporaries personally selected by Baker.

Today comes a second preview from the EP with a rework of ‘Favor’ from Jesu, the moniker of pioneering UK experimental and industrial metal musician Justin K. Broadrick (Godflesh, Final, JK Flesh, Techno Animal, Napalm Death).
“Having already been a fan of Julien since her first album, it was wonderful to hear that Julien was in turn a fan of Jesu. The request for the remix, and being able to work Julien’s voice and music in the context of Jesu, was something both daunting and very exciting. I reimagined Julien’s song to accommodate Jesu’s heavy and melancholy guitars and much much more. After much self doubt I was heartened to hear that Julien and all concerned loved the remix. This one I am truly proud of….” - Justin Broadrick

Julien Baker - "Bloodshot" (Helios Remix)

Earlier this year Julien Baker released her critically acclaimed album, Little Oblivions via Matador Records. Today, she announces the September 1st release of  the 'Little Oblivions Remixes' EP on which select tracks off the album are remixed and reworked by some of the most notable artists in contemporary music. Hand selected by Baker herself, it features contributions from Half Waif, Helios, Gordi and Jesu.

Today, she shares the first taste of 'Little Oblivions Remixes' by way of Helios’ take on “Bloodshot.” He transforms the heavy, electronics focused track into a dreamlike daze which accentuates Baker’s original melodies while bolstering the bittersweet lyrics and stunning vocal performance.

photo : Alysse Gafkjen

photo : Hollie Kenniff.
“I was excited when Julien Baker reached out about doing a remix, because I respect her work and it was an interesting challenge to do a remix of singer/songwriter material in the context of my approach which is more in the electronic/ambient world. I wanted to keep the integrity of the original composition, which was great, but also wanted to create enough of a spin to give it a distinctly new quality. My approach to remixes is to use as much of the original material as possible, but to use those elements as a base to create a variety of new textures. So I took a lot of the guitar and percussion elements and ran them through some old tape recorders to give it a rough "handmade" quality, reversed them, chopped them up or manipulated them with reverbs and delays to create ambient soundscapes. I treated Julien's vocals to match the rougher, more lo-fi quality I used with the instrumental elements. Harmonically, I changed up the chord changes to give the vocal melody a slightly new framework and arrangement on which to sit and create some new twists and turns and builds in the composition. It was one of the most fun remixes I've done to date, with such strong original material it gave me a lot to play around with." - Helios
