Video : Car Seat Headrest - "Sober To Death" (Live)

presave / preorder 'Faces From The Masquerade'

Ahead of the release of new live album 'Faces From The Masquerade' this Friday, December 8th, Car Seat Headrest today share a video of the band performing the song "Sober To Death".

“Another track not originally slated to be a part of this tour – it came up often enough in the polls that it soon got locked in,” says frontman Will Toledo of “Sober To Death,” taken from the album 'Twin Fantasy'. “I think this hushed version gave everyone a welcome chance to breathe. While this video is taken from our performance at the Wiltern in Los Angeles rather than the Brooklyn Steel shows featured in 'Faces From The Masquerade', it captures the same feeling of spontaneity and community that was present throughout the tour.”

The album’s title is a nod to the band’s original tour announcement, which kindly asked audiences to mask up (for obvious reasons) and also invited fans to “accoutre yourself in whatever further costumery you please” for an evening of “music, dancing, and identity loss.” It also alludes to the by now familiar custom-made gas mask worn by frontman Will Toledo at shows, complete with an expressive LED display for eyes. In addition to the group’s four core members - Toledo, guitarist/backing vocalist Ethan Ives, bassist Seth Dalby and drummer Andrew Katz - they were joined on the tour by keyboard player Ben Roth.

13. Beach Life-In-Death (Live at Brooklyn Steel)
14. Deadlines (Live at Brooklyn Steel)

On March 28th-30th 2022, Car Seat Headrest played three consecutive sold out nights at Brooklyn Steel in New York. An air of celebration, community and showmanship was present, made all the more palpable as the shows were far from a certainty - they took place amidst a year which saw the band having to postpone or cancel a large swath of their North American tour dates due to ongoing health issues.

The three night residency is captured on 'Faces From The Masquerade' - a double album’s worth of live performances that finds Car Seat Headrest at their most playful, exuberant, and precision honed.

The album title is a nod to the band’s original tour announcement, which kindly asked audiences to mask up (for obvious reasons) and also invited fans to “accoutre yourself in whatever further costumery you please” for an evening of “music, dancing, and identity loss.” It also alludes to the by now familiar custom-made gas mask worn by frontman Will Toledo at shows, complete with an expressive LED display for eyes. In addition to the group’s four core members - Toledo, guitarist/backing vocalist Ethan Ives, bassist Seth Dalby and drummer Andrew Katz - they were joined on the tour by keyboard player Ben Roth.

From the slow burning and atmospheric ‘Crows’ (“It always felt like the right track to start off the Masquerade tour,” Toledo notes in the album liner notes on the 8-minute opener, “it was gloomy, it was dancey, and in ten years we’d never played it live”) to the mosh-pitting and anthemic ‘Fill In The Blanks’ (“We went back to a big, fat rendition similar to the original for this tour, not the funky version we’d been rolling on the Twin Fantasy tour”) to the sprawling and epic ‘Beach Life-In-Death’ ("We re-arranged this one to have a bit more restraint up until the breaking point on “-dooooooggssss?” You wanna keep things dynamic with a 13+ minute song”), to the revisionist ‘Deadlines’ (“After experiencing various mutations throughout the recording process of Making a Door Less Open, this song got ANOTHER revamp for the live show to turn it into the climactic dance monster it always wanted to be”), Faces From The Masquerade is simultaneously a joyride through the greatest hits and a conversation with the devoted and ever-growing following that has formed around the band, their songs and live communions.

Elsewhere, Ethan Ives takes the lead on the fevered ‘It’s My Child (I’ll Do What I Like)’, a track originating from his side project Toy Bastard before joining the CSH fold. “As far as simply getting to ball out as a band, ‘It’s My Child’ always felt like the highlight of the whole show to me”, says Toldeo.

'Twin Fantasy' favorite 'Sober To Death' became something of a focal point as well as a mini-TikTok trend throughout the tour, with the song receiving reverential singalongs night after night wherever it was played. “Another track not originally slated to be a part of this tour - it came up often enough in the polls that it soon got locked in. I think this hushed version gave everyone a welcome chance to breathe, especially this night in New York, where people were getting so wild it felt necessary to dial things down for a few minutes.“

It is with great excitement that we can, at long last, share the news that Car Seat Headrest will be hitting the road this spring. In March, the band will launch an extensive run of dates – traveling the East Coast, West Coast, and points between. Find a complete itinerary below.

From the band :

"You are formally invited to a venue near you to partake in The CAR SEAT HEADREST MASQUERADE TOUR for a night of music, dancing, and identity loss.

We are deeply excited to crawl out of our pit and onto the spot lit stage once more. For a few hours on a spring night, you too can slip out of your mind and into the ever-changing shared world of the theater.

We ask that you wear a mask (you know which kind) and invite you to accouter yourself in whatever further costumery you please. Proof of COVID-19 vaccine or a negative test will be required. At some venues only proof of vaccine will be accepted - check your local venue to receive details."

Exclusive to this jaunt, the band will be selling a limited-edition tour-only CD, 'The MADLO EPs', which compiles this summer’s digital-only releases, 'MADLO: Influences' and 'MADLO: Remixes'.

Car Seat Headrest unveil a new song, “There Must Be More Than Blood,” ahead of the release of the forthcoming  'Making A Door Less Open', out May 1. .In addition, Will Toledo's self-directed video premiered earlier this morning after a dramatic (aren't they all?) YouTube countdown.

In its mesmeric slow burn, album centerpiece “There Must Be More Than Blood” presents another facet of the broad palette found on 'Making A Door Less Open', with Toledo placing emphasis on the individual songs, each with its own special energy.

Car Seat Headrest release a new song, “Hollywood” today accompanied by a Sabrina Nichols-directed video and an acoustic version of the song.
“Hollywood” is taken from the band’s forthcoming new album 'Making A Door Less Open', out May 1.

“This song is about Hollywood as a place where people go to
make their fantasies come to life, and they end up exploiting
other people and doing terrible things to maintain their fantasy,”
says bandleader Will Toledo, whose alter ego Trait appears in
the video in animated form. “There's this terror you're going to
lose the fantasy, and you're going to have to face the facts, and
some people will do anything to avoid facing that. It’s about that fear, and the pain of being subjugated to someone else's fantasy against your will, and it's all tied together under this banner of this physical location of Hollywood that we all know about and dream about, but none of us really want to think about what is going on behind the scenes there.”

Coming May 1 : Car Seat Headrest - 'Making A Door Less Open'

(album art : Cate Wurtz)

"Can't Cool Me Down", Produced by Dos Rios Films, Lyric Animation by Marisa Gesualdi

'Making A Door Less Open', the new album from Car Seat Headrest and the first set of brand new songs since 2016’s Teens Of Denial, is set for release May 1.  The first single,  “Can’t Cool Me Down,” a staple of their live sets over the past year, from the forthcoming album, and its accompanying video, are out today.

Created over the course of four years, 'Making a Door Less Open' is the result of a  collaboration between Car Seat Headrest, led by Will Toledo, and 1 Trait Danger, a CSH electronic side project consisting of drummer Andrew Katz and Toledo’s alternative persona, “Trait.”

'Making A Door Less Open' sees Toledo embarking on new and imaginative roads to songwriting and recording, placing emphasis on the individual songs, each with its own “special energy,” rather than attempting to draw a coherent storyteller narrative through the album as he has in the past, resulting in his most dynamic and open-ended work to date.

This album was made from January 2015 to December 2019, starting as a collection of vague ideas that eventually turned into songs. I wanted to make something that was different from my previous records, and I struggled to figure out how to do that. I realized that because the way I listened to music had changed, I had to change the way I wrote music, as well. I was listening less and less to albums and more and more to individual songs, songs from all over the place, every few days finding a new one that seemed to have a special energy. I thought that if I could make an album full of songs that had a special energy, each one unique and different in its vision, then that would be a good thing.

Andrew, Ethan, Seth and I started going into the studio to record songs that had more finished structures and jam on ideas that didn’t. Then I would mess with the recordings until I could see my way to a song. Most of the time on this album was spent shuttling between my house and Andrew’s, who did a lot of the mixing on this. He comes from an EDM school of mixing, so we built up sample-heavy beat-driven songs that could work to both of our strengths.

Each track is the result of an intense battle to bring out its natural colors and transform it into a complete work. The songs contain elements of EDM, hip hop, futurism, doo-wop, soul, and of course rock and roll. But underneath all these things I think these may be folk songs, because they can be played and sung in many different ways, and they’re about things that are important to a lot of people: anger with society, sickness, loneliness, love...the way this album plays out is just our own interpretation of the tracks, with Andrew, Ethan and I forming a sort of choir of contrasting natures.

I think my main hope for the world of music is that it will continue to grow by taking from the past, with a consciousness of what still works now. Exciting moments in music always form at a crossroads - a new genre emerges from the pieces of existing ones, an artist strips down a forgotten structure and makes something alien and novel. If there is a new genre emergent in our times, it has not yet been named and identified, but its threads come from new ways of listening to all types of music, of new methods of creating music at an unprecedented level of affordability and personal freedom, of new audiences rising up through the internet to embrace works that would otherwise be lost, and above all from the people whose love of music drives them to create it in the best form they possibly can. Hopefully it will remain nameless for some time, so it can be experienced with that same newness and strangeness that accompanies any and all meaningful encounters with music.

“Yea but ?what’s with the mask”
Bob Dylan said, “if someone’s wearing a mask, he’s gonna tell you the truth...if he’s not wearing a mask, it’s highly unlikely.” He never actually wore a mask onstage so I don’t know why he said that. But I decided to start wearing a mask for a couple of reasons. One, I still get nervous being onstage with everybody looking at me. If everyone is looking at the mask instead, then it feels like we’re all looking at the same thing, and that is more honest to me. Two, music should be about enjoying yourself, especially live music, and I think of this costume as a way to remind myself and everyone else to have some fun with it. I don’t think it changes anything else about the songs or how you feel about them to be able to drop it for a second and have fun with it. If you can’t do that then you’re in a bad place...

The character comes from another project Andrew and I have been working on called 1 TRAIT DANGER. This is something Andrew started doing on tour—recording ideas for his own songs as they came to him, and forcibly enlisting everyone else to participate. It appealed to me because it was nothing like Car Seat Headrest, and the ideas cracked me up. Before we knew it we had two albums released, a video game that was almost impossible to beat, and a growing number of people who seemed to be enjoying it all. It’s been a great outlet for weird and untenable musical experiments, and the live performances have been a blast. I play a character called TRAIT, and we’ve been working out the backstory as we go. I think he spent a lot of time in classified government facilities before getting into the music business.

This is the kind of stuff that kept us going while we were working on MADLO. We were in our own little world and free to try any idea we “Yea but ?what’s with the mask”wanted. A lot of the ideas for 1 Trait bled over to the Car Seat tracks, and vice versa. You just can’t make music without first creating your own environment around it...sound’s always gotta travel through something. This time it was a mask.

OUT NOW: Car Seat Headrest - "I Haven’t Done Shit This Year, Part 3"

[caption id="attachment_34383" align="alignnone" width="537"] Photo by Mikeal Beland[/caption]

Car Seat Headrest have released the final installment of I Haven’t Done Shit This Year, a three-part documentary on the band in partnership with TIDAL. The documentary, available to members and non-members of TIDAL alike, is titled Working In Progress, offering a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse as the band work in the studio, practice room and live on stage on new song ‘Stop Lying to Me’, slated for a forthcoming Car Seat Headrest album.

Speaking to TIDAL on the documentary and new song, Will Toledo says “I think the plan is for it to be on the next record, but it really is still a work in progress. It's stitched together in a video from various sessions; I'm still really not sure what the final piece is going to look like. I've really been thinking it over and changing stuff that could be better.” Read the full interview and watch parts 1 & 2 of the documentary here.

Coming June 17 : Car Seat Headrest - 'Commit Yourself Completely'

('Commit Yourself Completely' album sleeve photo by Veronica Anderson)

"Fill In The Blank" (Live at Newport Music Hall, Columbus, OH)

Car Seat Headrest today announces Commit Yourself Completely – a new nine-track live album that will be released only via digital means June 17th. Culled from performances across the UK, US and France, the nine-track album spans material from 2016’s breakout Teens Of Denial and 2018’s reimagined epic Twin Fantasy – as well as the first officially released recording of longtime live staple ‘Ivy’ by Frank Ocean. A filmed version of the performance of ‘Fill In The Blank’ which appears on the album, recorded in Columbus, Ohio, can be seen now above.

“This is a compilation of songs from shows we played in 2018,” says Will Toledo. “We recorded every show we did that year, and I went through about 50 of them to get the final tracklist for this album. This isn’t necessarily the best possible version of each track, but it’s some of the most fun we’ve had on stage. I particularly remember the show we did in the small French town of Amiens, maybe the smallest show we did that year, and how great it felt to be up in people’s faces with everyone plugging in to the music right away. The recordings we made of the shows came out very clean, so rather than try to artificially recreate how it sounded in the different venues night to night, I tried to give the whole album that in-your-face feeling, like we’re playing the songs right in front of you. When you’re onstage with everything happening at once, you never really know what it sounds like in the room anyways; all you know is how the music is feeling. Hopefully this will give you a sense of what these shows felt like.”

A snapshot of the 7-person lineup featuring members of Naked Giants experienced by crowds worldwide over the last two years, Commit Yourself Completely offers a visceral, loose and ebullient take on these much-loved songs, as well as an an incandescent capstone of a formative touring period as Car Seat Headrest readies his next studio album. Musicians featured on the album are Will Toledo (vocals), Seth Dalby (bass), Ethan Ives (guitar, vocals), Andrew Katz (drums, vocals), Grant Mullen (guitar, vocals) Gianni Aiello (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Henry LaVallee (additional percussion).

Great Music For Terrible Times : 25% Off Holiday Sale

Dear Citizens of Earth,

As we reach the end of 2018, it would not be an exaggeration to say we’re in the midst of many difficult moments in human history.  The icecaps are melting.   America is on the brink of a constitutional crisis.  You can’t walk 15 feet in any major metropolis without breaking your neck on a discarded scooter.  Your personal data (including everything we collect in this campaign) is being used for nefarious means. Nearly 15% of the public believes we actually told someone to “sound more like Adele.”  Nearly $40 million was spent to produce “The Hurricane Heist”

All of that said, there is still beauty, mystery, and grandeur in what’s left of the fine arts.  And when you’re done with the fine arts, there’s Matador's incredible array of 2018 titles from Belle and Sebastian, Body/Head, boygenius, Car Seat Headrest, Lucy Dacus, Iceage, Interpol, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Liz Phair, Snail Mail, Kurt Vile and Yo La Tengo.  Will these records help you sort out a world gone mad? hey, they’re great, but not THAT GREAT.  Almost certainly, and that’s why your friends at Matador —a label as magnanimous as it is humble — are offering an unprecedented 25% OFF when you use the code, “terribletimes” thru December 13. Orders of $40.00 and above receive a free tote bag and take it from me, a tote bag skeptic, you’re way less likely to drop shit all over the sidewalk when you have a stylish bag.
