Coming May 18 On True Panther Sounds : Tanlines' 'Highlights'

On March 18 (Europe) and 19 (North America), True Panther Sounds is releasing 'Highlights', the 2nd album from New York's Tanlines. The duo of Jesse Cohen and Eric Emm worked with producers Patrick Ford and Chris Taylor in Los Angeles and NYC respectively.

The album's first single, "Slipping Away", premiered via SiriusXM's XMU earlier today, and is available for free download for the next week by signing up for the mailing list at Tanlinesinternet.com. Pre-order details for 'Highlights' can be found below.

tracklisting :

1. Pieces
2. Slipping Away
3. Palace
4. Two Thousand Miles
5. Invisible Ways
6. Bad Situations
7. Running Still
8. Thinking
9. If You Stay
10. Darling Dreamer

'Highlights',the band’s first collection of new material since their critically-lauded 2012 debut, 'Mixed Emotion's began in a basement in Pittsburgh and ended in a church in Brooklyn. It trades world music sounds (as heard through YouTube) for a more alive, realized approach, the result of Emm and Cohen knowing they wanted to break from their ‘two guys, one screen’ writing style. And even if they had wanted to rely on old methods, they couldn’t: when they sat down to write Highlights in Emm’s childhood home in Pittsburgh, their computer blew up, quite literally, “with a burst of sparks and clouds of smoke. Whatever had just happened felt like some kind of omen,” says Emm.

Stranded without the samples and sounds that had previously defined their musical palette, they spent the rest of the week in Pittsburgh writing songs the old-fashioned way -- with a guitar and drums. They found themselves falling back on facility they’d gained with their instruments over the previous two years of touring, and an alternative, simpler process evolved, one that set the tone for Highlights immediately.

Influenced by their time spent on the road touring in support of 'Mixed Emotions', they reached for the sounds of 90’s New York hip-hop drums, Detroit techno synths, and lots and lots of guitars. The result could almost be called an homage to the sonics of America, if that sort of phrase wouldn’t make the band cringe. Instead, let’s just call 'Highlights' “the album where things started making more sense.”

The following shows in NYC and Los Angeles go on sale this Friday at noon eastern :

Thursday, May 14 - Bowery Ballroom, New York NY
Monday, May 18 - Echoplex, Los Angeles CA

Important Festival News (For Those Who Mysteriously Fail To Read Other Music/News Sites)

If you're like us (and I suspect you are), YOU LOVE MUSIC FESTIVALS almost as much as you love freedom. And there's so many that are close to our hearts.  Matador's Lost Weekend.  Atlamont.  The Gathering Of The Juggalos.  The Cornerstone Festival.  I could go on, but you've probably got some illegal downloading to back to, so let's cut to the chase. Transmission Entertainment's 7th annual Fun Fun Fun Festival is happening in Austin, TX this coming November 2, 3 and 4, and we're thrilled to find out at the last minute announce Tanlines, Fucked Up, Paul Banks and The Young are all taking part.

Likewise,  ATP America's "I'll Be Your Mirror" weekender (September 21-23) has been moved from Asbury Park, NJ to the glamorous West Side of Manhattan.  The Lee Ranaldo Band and Chavez will be playing, along with a tremendous lineup of performers, none of whom are named Louis C.K.   They'll all have their hands full measuring up to Richie Blackmore at California Jam (above) , but there's no harm in trying.

It's Summer, Get To Know Your TANLINES

SUMMER IS  HERE!...ok well it officially starts tomorrow but we can't contain our excitement so we're getting started a day early.   Ahhh Summer, the season of extended daylight, backyard BBQs, road trips with friends, summer playlists, and Tanlines + Lemonade of course.

Apologies for that simple and obvious play on words.  But honestly as sure as you're likely to have some tan lines after laying around the pool drinking a glass of lemonade this summer, we're convinced both bands (Tanlines and Lemonade) will be on your iPods/stereos while doing so.  But don't take our word for it, Creator's Project said that Tanlines are "destined to become your summer soundtrack", and New York Magazine, Stereogum, and Refinery 29 couldn't agree more, naming "All Of Me" one of their Songs Of The Summer.

Anyhow since we'll be spending all summer together, it's probably a good time to get to know your Tanlines better.  Courtesy of Creator's Project, click HERE for an intimate look at the band Tanlines, their recording process, how they formed, and much much more.

Also Tanlines will be performing across the US all summer long, starting tomorrow night with an official summer kick off show at the House of Vans in Brooklyn.  A full list of summer tour dates is below.

Mon, June 25 - Los Angeles, CA - School Night @ Bardot (DJ set only)

Tue, June 26 - Santa Barbara, CA - Velvet Jones (presented by 92.9 KJEE)

UPDATE: Tanlines will now be playing live TOMORROW, April 25, at 3:00PM EDT/noon PDT.

Dear faithful radio listener,

Today on Seattle's KEXP, available on the radio dial at 90.3FM or online at KEXP.org, we have a dynamic duo of artists performing for your edification and enlightenment.

Tune in at 12:30PM EDT/9:30AM PDT.

Later today, at 4:30PM EDT/1:30PM PDT, Tanlines, who did not open for Refused last night but surely would have killed it if they had, will be performing live in the KEXP studios. Due to border issues (thanks a lot, Canada), Tanlines must needs reschedule their KEXP session. They will now take to the live airwaves tomorrow, April 25, at 3:00PM EDT/noon PDT. Their new album is called Mixed Emotions, the video for the song "All Of Me" is above, and you should make a point of purchasing the former and enjoying the latter.

Tanlines - "All Of Me" video, directed by Julian Barratt of The Mighty Boosh, debuts with Adult Swim

Today public radio stars Tanlines give us the second video from their just-released album Mixed Emotions (buy it here). The video was directed by Julian Barratt of The Mighty Boosh (full credits below), and is brought to us by the fine folks at Adult Swim. This video is awesome:

The video, which marks the music video directorial debut of UK comedy legend Julian Barratt of The Mighty Boosh and was produced by Framestore, will be Tanlines’ second video off of the album (and the first not in 360 degrees). The collaboration between Barratt and the band was a combination of brazen wishful thinking and good luck. Tanlines, who are influenced by Barratt, toyed with the possibility of listing the Mighty Boosh as a creative partner in their liner notes. Word reached Barratt, who after listening to an early version of the album realized “All of Me” served as a perfect musical counterpoint to some of the imagery he was interested in exploring, and an opportunity to experiment making music videos. So shockingly, he dove in.

Barratt says, “At the time I wrote the treatment, I was watching a particular film by Fabrice Du Welz called ‘The Ordeal’ which is a really good, strange, macabre film with some really interesting movement and dance bits in that…I’m always trying to do anything between comedy and horror. Because you have such a strong flavor with Tanlines’ music, it’s quite fun to offset that with bleak imagery.”

The video stars the band performing on an old-timey late-night television show to an elderly crowd jiltedly moving together, doing something just short of dancing. It is mysterious, funny, macabre and a definite must-see.

Adult Swim is also presenting a behind-the-scenes featurette on the making of the "All Of Me" video, starring Mr. Barratt (short film directed by Matthew Bowron, edited by Richard Carter):

Tanlines hit the road in a few weeks:

Matador & True Panther Sounds In Austin, TX This Week

Notice how careful I was not to use the trademarked brand-name, S---- By S--------?  That's because the several of the events below require neither a badge nor a wristband to attend.  We've helpfully pointed out the exceptions, however.  As always, we're thrilled to bits to taking part, even in the tiniest of ways, in this great annual rock biz circle jerk (that sometimes features former members of the Circle Jerks) and on behalf of my fellow Austin residents, I'd like to welcome you to America's most self-satisfied Live Music Parking Lot Capitol.

This doesn't mean, however, you can come over to my house.

Tanlines "All of Me" Mp3

We're nearing the March 20th release of Mixed Emotions on True Panther Sounds. You've already spent some time wrapping your head around the album opener Brothers (and the progressive house rave r die, thizz yr brains out remix) so now here's something new.

"All of Me" is the kind of spirited and soaring track Tanlines have somehow gotten really really really good at making. An intimate song about love and fear busted out into a digital stadium. It's a SPRING song more than a summer song, maybe even a springtime in New York song...which is convenient because this spring is going to have some Tanlines tour dates that you can find below. Hope you enjoy the track and pre-order the record, which you can get on mailorder exclusive color vinyl for the time being.

Intended Play 2012 - For The Vinyl-Phobic Amongst, The Price Just Dropped From $2 To Free

(I really don't see the resemblance)

Back in early January WE SHOCKED THE MUSIC WORLD with news of a $1.98 Matador/True Panther Sounds sampler LP including (mostly) new songs from The Young, Ceremony, Lee Ranaldo Tanlines, Perfume Genius, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Fucked Up, Girls, Cold Cave, Esben and The Witch and Kurt Vile. It's come to our attention that a) there's a few stragglers out there who've yet to order this limited edition LP, and b) some of you either trashed your record players or simply prefer music in digital form.

So here's the deal --- you can still order the vinyl version from The Matador Store or hound your local retailer who might've filed it in THE $2 BIN.  Failing that, here's a free download of the entire compilation. You're welcome!

Tanlines "Brothers" Video and Tour Dates

Tanlines made a really amazing video for Mixed Emotions' first track Brothers. We've all spent a lot of time talking about what it is to make MUSIC VIDEOS in this day and age, and as they do, Tanlines found a way to do something a little different- to make an intimate, simple story take on a few extra layers....to be able to tell a simple story that can be retold in an infinite number of ways. The video is shot using a 360-degree GoPano lens and has enough easter eggs to justify a few repeated views. Maybe it's the "You can call me al" of the 360 generation. We want to thank EyeSee360 (specifically Amey) for lending us this equipment thus allowing us the privilege of actually being able to AFFORD doing something a little different.

Mixed Emotions is out 3.20.12 on True Panther sounds. Pre-order it HERE

PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU ARE AN IPHONE USER DOWNLOAD THE APP HERE. CAN'T EMPHASIZE ENOUGH HOW MUCH BETTER IT MAKES THIS WHOLE THING. SERIOUSLY!!!! DOWNLOAD HERE

Brooklyn, NY’s Tanlines will release their debut album, Mixed Emotions, on our imprint True Panther Sounds on March 20th, 2012. It was recorded in various NYC home studios and mixed in Miami by legendary mixing engineer Jimmy Douglass (Timbaland, Aaliyah, Justin Timberlake, Television, Roxy Music). Mixed Emotion’s first taste, “Brothers,” is available for download from their site or direct download below...

Anyone well-versed with New York City’s diverse music scene for the last few years knows Mixed Emotions is a long time coming. Since their first song hit the web in 2008, Tanlines – comprised of Eric Emm (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Jesse Cohen (drums, keyboards, bass) – have been steadily releasing genius dance singles with labels across the globe, including True Panther, Young Turks and Kitsune. Their live show has taken them worldwide, playing at the likes of The Guggenheim, The Whitney and more in their hometown, as well as an opening slot on Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas’s solo tour in 2009. But it was an ill-fated European tour – filled with some of the most disappointing shows of their respective careers – that ultimately led to Mixed Emotion’s genesis. The band spent long hours driving through Europe, listening to albums by R.E.M., skate punk records from the 80’s, Born in the USA, and more. As Eric explains it, “Listening to them, I became very aware of the lasting resonance of a good song. A good song transcends production trends. That’s what we were missing, and I wanted to start making songs that would have a life of their own.”

The band returned from Europe only to be greeted with a larger problem: making such songs in Emm’s studio, which was not only the place where they created, but the place where they met prior to forming the band, would be impossible; the building that housed his eight year old studio had been sold. It is ultimately this sense of starting over that helps informs some of Mixed Emotion’s most palpable moments.

Mixed Emotions is a testament to the benefits and pitfalls of life’s changes, getting older, and being pushed out of one’s comfort zone. The band that was born out of a studio suddenly had to become, well, a band. Songs were written simply on a guitar, with the band later adding their palette of electronic and organic sounds afterwards. Emm honed his voice, a confident and tranquil baritone, and focused on lyricism, something he had not done seriously in the past. He sings stories about loss, the passage of time, and the lessons and warnings of accumulated knowledge gleaned by someone who has spent an entire lifetime in music. The process stretched the duo – Cohen likened making the album to that of making a film when it was done - and Mixed Emotions is all the better for it.

Sometimes painful, sometimes transcendent, and ultimately a very precise labor of love, Mixed Emotions simply feels vivid. Songs pulse and linger, filled with percussive textures, bright, warm synths and driving kick drums to juxtapose the album’s lyrical melancholia. The record obscures and blurs the lines between synthetic and organic, real and fake, happy and sad. It is the sound of stadium pop in small spaces. And it is one of the most remarkable debut albums you will hear in 2012.

Tanlines will be playing shows across the U.S. this spring. More info to come!
