Yo La Tengo - Complete Matador Catalog Now Available On Bandcamp

his

Yo La Tengo's entire Matador Records catalog is now available on Bandcamp starting today. This is significant for several reasons, not limited to this coming Friday (November 4) marking another day in which Bandcamp waives their revenue share (aka "Bandcamp Friday"). So if you're a big fan of Matador pocketing more money than usual, wait a few days.

We do realize this announcement will likely provoke replies asking when some other band's entire catalog will be available on Bandcamp and the answer to that question is most assuredly, "someday" or "maybe". Thank you.

Circuit des Yeux - "Live At Greenwood Cemetary"

“Here on hallowed ground soil becomes clogged with tears, sorrow, and embitterment. It’s not fair the way a blade of grass can carry on while us humans wrestle with the mirage of justice.”

On June 7, Haley Fohr, AKA Circuit des Yeux (@circuitdesyeux), joined us at Greenwood Cemetery for an otherworldly installment of Graveyard Shift, alongside Whitney Johnson (@matchesse) on viola. Today on PW Broadcast, we present a video of the performance accompanied by "Learning To Dance Through Loss," a series of poems by Fohr reflecting on that night.

Out Today : Horsegirl - "History Lesson Pt. II"

Horsegirl have made their cover of the Minutemen’s “History Lesson Part 2.” --- previously released as the b-side to the "Billy" 7"  --- available digitally for the first time today. “‘History Lesson Part 2’ has always been a punk manifesto for us,” says Horsegirl. “It was an unusual pick to cover considering the lyrics are so specific to the Minutemen, but we thought there was something appealing too about recording a"History Lesson"; that doesn’t actually give you any history on us."

Coming February 24: Algiers - "Shook," "Irreversible Damage" (ft. Zack De La Rocha) Out Today

“The world got shook”

So Algiers formed a crew. The bandwho have built one of the most exciting catalogs and cult followings of recent years, with 2020’s There Is No Year described as "electrifying and unpredictable" (The Observer) and "precise, thoughtful and powerful" (NME) gathered a posse of like-minded artists to create their fourth album, Shook, out February 24th on Matador. Stacked with guests spanning icons through to future stars, Shook is a lightning rod for an elusive yet universal energy and feeling. A plurality of voices; a spiritual and geographical homecoming; a strategy of communion in a burning world; the story of an end of a relationship; an Atlanta front porch summer party. Ultimately, it's a 17-track set of the most mind-expanding and thrilling music that you are likely to hear anytime soon.

Today, Algiers shake you with tour-de-force new single ‘Irreversible Damage’ featuring Zack de la Rocha. This a relapse / what it be god / No rehab for my jihad / A rapture in a grief storm / Time on my neck an’ it be gone” de la Rocha spits to a breakneck climax of clattering beats, snaking guitars and pulsing electronics. “The end of that song is the sound of joy,” says Algiers frontman Franklin James Fisher. “That's what hope sounds like in 2022 when everything's falling apart.” Listen HERE. It follows the recent release of new single/video ‘Bite Back’ featuring billy woods and Backxwash. Watch HERE.

(Matador Webstore / Bandcamp Exclusive Gold Vinyl)

(Standard Black Vinyl)

(Standard CD)

Algiers will perform a special Shook event in at Brooklyn’s National Sawdust on December 15th, which will feature special guests.

The band will also tour Europe in 2023, including a London show March 8th at the Dome. The band are also confirmed for the 2023 edition of SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, with more dates to follow.

Algiers have always been unflinching, but Shook is at the same time notably joyous and celebratory. It was born when Fisher and Mahan found themselves back in their native Atlanta for several months, reeling from growing pressures and burnout as touring musicians. This triggered an intense period of beatmaking, reconnecting as friends over hours immersed in episodes of Rhythm Roulette and Against the Clock and descending deep into alt-rap YouTube rabbit holes. A revisit of DJ Grand Wizard Theodore’s 1970s punk-infused New York City rap masterpiece ‘Subway Theme’ served as a spiritual moodboard for the album’s cross-pollination of urban and counter-culture styles. Across the seamlessly flowing set, including spoken vignettes and ambient instrumental segues, the band pay respect to a sprawling lineage of rap and punk iconoclasts from DJ Premier, DJ Screw and Dead Boys to Lukah, Griselda and Dïat – chopping and screwing beats on a dusty SP-404 and a Sequential Circuits Tempest, building imagined sample libraries from scratch.

While community and collaboration has always been integral to Algiers’ ethos, Shook brings this to its fullest manifestation. The liner notes read like a who’s who of ground-breaking and contemporary underground music, featuring Zack de la Rocha, Big Rube (The Dungeon Family), billy woods, Samuel T. Herring (Future Islands), Jae Matthews (Boy Harsher), LaToya Kent (Mourning [A] BLKstar), Backxwash, Nadah El Shazly, DeForrest Brown Jr. (Speaker Music), Patrick Shiroishi, Lee Bains III, and Mark Cisneros (Hammered Hulls, The Make-Up, Kid Congo Powers). Their contributions throughout deftly reshape and recontextualize the notion of being Shook from a variety of perspectives, occupying shifting roles as oracles and narrators. “It very much deepens and broadens the world of Algiers”, says drummer Matt Tong.

Atlanta, where the genesis of this record took place, is ultimately at its heart. Field recordings and original samples created by the band emphasize throughout a sense of place, collectivist, imagined community and home, all building a world that evokes the elusive sensory experience of growing up in the urban South. “We were working in an environment that we were used to”, says guitarist Lee Tesche. “It feels like the most Algiers record that we've ever made.”

The accomplishment of this record is made all the more impressive by the fact it was made by a band who were falling apart and on the verge of breaking up. But instead they have produced an extraordinary, transformative record born from a shared sense of place and experience. “I think this record is us finding home,” says Mahan, with Fisher adding: “It was a whole new positive experience— having a renewed relationship with the city we're from and having a pride in that. I like the idea that this record has taken you on a voyage but it begins and ends in Atlanta.”

Mdou Moctar - Niger EP Vol. 1 & 2

(Photo: Atiba Jefferson)

Pre-order Niger EP Vol. 1 & 2

Mdou Moctar has announced details of part two of the Niger EP series – featuring live and alternate versions of songs spanning the band’s discography recorded in their native Niger – which will be released digitally on October 25th. It follows Niger Vol.1 EP which is out now digitally. A physical release date for both EPs on limited vinyl has additionally been announced for March 10.

A preview of Vol. 2 is today available to listen to with a live version of ‘Ibitilan’. First appearing on 2019’s Blue Stage Session, the latest iteration of ‘Ibitlan’ captures the band’s renowned live energy in unmediated form, pushing the faders to their very limits. Listen HERE.

“Ibitilan is a love song,” says producer and bassist Mikey Coltun. “Mdou sings about his love for a woman, comparing her to a beautiful valley with a stream running through it, how her skin is a yellow flower and her smile is like lightning. This particular recording was done in Agadez in 2017 at a wedding. Mdou and I had played three weddings a day for about a month and a half on that trip. It was like bootcamp. I loved it. Ibitlan is one of Mdou's oldest songs and is covered by pretty much every Tuareg guitarist. We've played versions of this song lasting over 20 minutes. It's definitely one of my favorites to play!”

Belle and Sebastian - 2023 North American Tour

(photo : Anna Isola Crolla)

This Spring, Belle and Sebastian will return to North America for a fresh round of shows, including stops in Detroit, Toronto, Atlanta, and beyond.

The band’s 9th album, ‘A Bit of Previous,’ was released in May and reached #8 on the UK album chart. The record was recorded in the band’s hometown of Glasgow after plans to fly to Los Angeles were scrapped due to the pandemic. Stuart Murdoch writes in the liner notes: “we did it together, us and the city. This record was the first ‘full’ LP recording for B&S in Glasgow since ‘Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant’ in 1999. We clocked in every morning, we played our songs, we wrote together, we tried new things, we took the proverbial lump of clay, and we threw it every day.”

The result is one the most diverse and thrilling entries in the band’s catalogue, self-produced and recorded (with contributions from Brian McNeill, Matt Wiggins, Kevin Burleigh and Shawn Everett). It’s the sound of a group nearing their third collective decade with grace, irreverence, musical bravado and emerging as an endless source of energy and reinvention.

Coming October 20 : Circuit des Yeux & Claire Rousay - 'Sunset Poem'

"Sculpting The Exodus" (reimagined by Claire Rousay)

Circuit des Yeux (photo by Evan Jenkins)

Claire Rousay (photo by Em Scott)

On 'Sunset Poem,' Claire Rousay reworks three songs from Circuit des Yeux’s otherworldly 2021 album, '-io'. Today, you can listen to her take on “Sculpting the Exodus” and watch a video of the two artists in conversation. The full EP will be released October 20.

In its first year on Earth, -'io' has continued to evolve. Though the record was written for a 25-piece orchestra, Haley Fohr’s songs have been refreshed and rearranged to suit each round of touring. This has included performances with string ensembles, a trio with bass and drums, and an expansive duo with multi-instrumentalist Whitney Johnson (Matchess).

'Sunset Poem' extends this process to the studio. Rousay’s work often utilizes environmental recordings to cultivate rich and evocative ambience. Here, the composer unspools three '-io' compositions ; “Vanishing,” “Sculpting the Exodus,” and “Argument – stripping back layers of instrumentation and sheltering Fohr’s voice amid a weave of hushed electronic textures. The results reveal a newly tender, meditative, and boundless space within the songs.

I found Claire Rousay’s music when we were all stuck inside for 2 years.

Her music kind of gave me the atmosphere of company in a solitary reality.  It reminded me of the way I used to interact with music when I was a teenager.  A room can become a whole ecosystem once the music is playing.  Her deft ability to work with sound in a microscopic way is what makes this collaboration so successful.

It was an honor to give Claire the stems of -io.  The results are beguiling and immense, like watching lead pipes slowly melt into a metallic river.  - Haley Fohr

Yo La Tengo - Hanukkah 2022

And now, a message from Yo La Tengo:

Hi everybody, In answer to the question that at least one person living in the land down under has asked, yup, we're going to be back at the Bowery Ballroom this year to play all eight nights of Hanukkah. If you've celebrated the holiday with us before, you already know that we'll duct tape the electric menorah to the bass amp, and every night Yo La Tengo will play a set (if history repeats itself, no song will be repeated during the run). There'll be a comic and an opening band that will be unannounced until doors open each night. And if we can convince anyone else to join in, they'll be there too. The proceeds will be going to charity. If you haven't celebrated the holiday with us before, maybe it's time that you did.

Hanukkah starts on Sunday, December 18 and continues through Sunday, December 25. Tickets are $50 each and will go on sale on Friday, October 7 at 10 am EDT. OK, gotta start practicing!

Tickets will be available at: yolatengo.com/schedule
