OUT TODAY - EMA's Original Score for #HORROR, Music Video for "Amnesia Haze"

EMA's original score for the #HORROR is officially out today. Fact Magazine premiered the music video for “Amnesia Haze” which was directed by Severiano Martinez & EMA.

"We were looking for a track to fit in a scene for #HORROR where Chloe's character opens up her closet for all the girls to play dress up. Severiano had this instrument and I fell in love with it and wrote the top line.

Although it has a very "pretty" ethereal pop sound to it, I think of the lyrics as almost a eulogy. Kind of my 21st century version of 'Sweet Child of Mine'. Although of course my guitar solo is not quite Slash-worthy.

For the video we wanted something expansive, pristine and vast. I feel like these landscapes represent the distance of memory and some sort of unbreakable bond."

VIDEO : EMA - "Active Shooter"

any kid in america

any kid in america

any kid in america
walk in and you sell them a bullet
any kid in america

armed good guys are a myth
never saved no one from shit
armed good guys are a myth

angry white boys get uptight
got no right to end a life

got no right to end a life

Lyrics by EMA. Music by Alexandra Atnif and EMA

I did not produce this video. The footage is from an “active shooter” video made by the Mount Pleasant Police Department in Mount Pleasant, Texas. It was
made for training purposes. It was shot in a middle school. There are dozens of these videos online, including ones made by Homeland Security and the LA Sheriff’s department. They urge every day Americans to be prepared in all situations in case a mass shooting breaks out.

Tonight : EMA's Deep Lab Residency At The New Museum : "Does It Still Feel Weird If I Use My Hands?"

(EDITOR'S NOTE : EMA's performance tonight at New Inc. (see below) is sold out)

"Does It Still Feel Weird If I Just Use My Hands?"

NEW INC, 231 Bowery NYC
Friday, May 29, 2015

A performance by experimental rock musician EMA
On her critically-acclaimed LP The Future's Void, Erika M. Anderson (EMA) unveiled songs about surveillance, data mining ,and internet privacy, all written before Snowden fled to Russia. The New York Times called her "a technological prophet in her own time."

In conjunction with the cyberfeminist collective Deep Lab's residency at NEW INC during the New Museum’s IDEAS CITY festival, Anderson investigates these themes again with a decidedly lighter touch. Responding to the festival theme of the “Invisible City,” Anderson draws on her experiences as a substitute teacher to re-interpret surveillance through a lo-fi approach. "Does It Still Feel Weird If I Just Use My Hands" investigates privacy, representation, and surveillance using paper and pencil instead of cameras and computers.

"I was inspired by Jason Polan's attempt to draw everyone in NYC. Since some of it is done surreptitiously, it's kind of a form of surveillance. But because it's done by hand, it feels loving instead of sinister."

For this experimental performance, Anderson will provide a soundtrack and drawings of her own, which will be manipulated in real-time via the audio-visual app Generate (NEW INC members) to create an immersive projection environment. Audience participation is encouraged.

EMA will also be appearing at London's Barbican Centre on Tuesday July 7 ("I Wanna Destroy (Sacred Objects from Suburban Homes)"), and tickets are still available.

FEBRUARY 15: EMA 'I Wanna Destory' at MOMA PS1

Last September, Erika M. Anderson released 'Back To The Void', a Hive Zine that delved deep into the writing process of The Future's Void in an incredibly vivid and unique way. Another expansion of the album will come with 'I Wanna Destroy.'

I Wanna Destroy is a Virtual Reality environment built in collaboration with Portland-based developer Zach Krausnick and the software company Chroma. This virtual world uses 3D game mechanics to articulate experiences not often explored in mainstream gaming; including guilt, nostalgia, family, and transcendence. Audience members explore a changing 3D environment, while their experiences are projected before the entire audience. EMA providse a live score, working to meld semi-acoustic instruments and lyrical content into a digital world.

More information and tickets can be found here.

VIDEO : EMA - "3Jane"

On Tuesday, Dazed & Confused premiered the latest video from EMA's 'The Future's Void', the Y2K-directed "3Jane". D&C called it "creepy"...BUT THEY MEANT IT IN A GOOD WAY.

"In this video I am alone in a guilded paradise with another bleach blonde creation. Our physical resemblence is uncanny but not exact. Our relationship is undefined. Does she protect me or mock me? Is she my jailer or my servant? What does she desire?"- Erika M. Anderson

"Somewhere between the prediction of a fully realized human-android and the watchful eye of surveillance technology, lies a conception of the reality we intended to create in “3Jane”. Depicted therein are the dichotomies between the persona of the artist and her branded image, the human and the automata, the watched and the watcher, the real versus the ideal, and the merger of these dualities. Presented is a dream-like narrative scenario that touches on the inevitable union of humanity and technology." - Y2K

EMA: Multi-Media Zine 'Back To The Void', Blogotheque session debuts

On September 11th EMA released bonus track "False Flag" which she describes as her "lost generation take on 9/11" on New Hive. Following up that important track, she has put together a 34 page multi-media zine Back To The Void. This zine "demonstrates how it feels to go from being relatively unknown to having a larger online presence, and how it feels when your online self slips out of your control."
“At the tail end of 2011, in the middle of winter, I had a disturbing psychedelic experience where I became convinced that there was a Neuromancer inside of my brain,” says EMA.

“One of the things that unmoored me most was slowly losing control of my self-image. I started out taking most of my own press photos and creating a great deal of the imagery associated with my record...And then somewhere along the line things began to slip...Magazines wanted exclusive photos...I became self-conscious. I wore more makeup. I put a hand on my hip. I parted my lips ever so slightly...While there is something undeniably pleasing about seeing a beautiful image of yourself, overall I felt ashamed...I’d even seen it happen to many of the female artists who I had idolized as a teen. They started out grubby and raw and became increasingly polished. It can happen to anyone. I just fucking hated when it started happening to me.”

Take in Back Into The Void here.
In other EMA news, Blogothèque posted their latest 'Take Away Show' earlier today, featuring "Cthulu" and "Dead Celebrity" which filmed last month at Jungle Design in New York City. Watch the Derrick Belchm-directed session below.

EMA - "False Flag"

"False Flag" (via New Hive)
It takes some gumption to put out a song like this on September 11th, especially as it explicitly references the World Trade Cener attacks and identifies 9/11 as the day that has shaped the direction of the world in the 13 years since the Twin Towers came down. This isn’t exactly a revolutionary observation, of course — there’s a whole lot of shit that’s happened post-9/11 that you can trace back to that crazy, terrifying day, for better or worse, and politicians everywhere were quick to exploit its potential as a pretext for a lot of policy that might otherwise have been indefensible. This isn’t revisionist thinking, either — as early as October 2001, people were decrying the way that the Bush government politicized the tragedy and used it as the pretext for a whole lot of questionable policy, both foreign and domestic.

What’s most interesting to me about “False Flag,” though, is that it’s the first song I’ve heard about the experience of growing up in the shadow of 9/11. On her Twitter, EMA called the song a “lost generation take on 9/11,” and the lyrics deal with something that few artists so far have done a particularly good job of approaching: the fact that the millennial generation is the first one in many years to grow up with no expectation that the world they inherit will be on an upward trajectory. The oil’s running out, the planet’s heating up, the rich are getting richer, the poor are getting screwed. It’s may or may not actually be all doom and gloom, of course, but there’s a stark difference between the direction the world is heading for the millennials and the direction it was headed for several generations that preceded them. - Tom Hawking, "Well, Here’s the 21st-Century Protest Song You’ve Been Asking For", Flavorwire

WATCH: EMA + THE CREATORS PROJECT

"I didn't set out to try and make a topical record about the internet and technology. It felt really taboo and weird and I felt embarrassed about it, but it was also this thing that was so obviously prevalent in my life and in everyone else's life that I can't just pretend that it doesn't exist and write a love song about driving in a car or something."

The Creators Project sat down with Erika M. Anderson and Leif Shackelford of EMA to delve into the writing and recording of The Future's Void. Read more here and watch the revealing video piece below:

'THE FUTURE'S VOID' IS OUT NOW

The time is now. Facebook bought Oculus Rift  for $2 billion two weeks ago.  Erika wrote "Satellites" pre-NSA/Snowden. This record is about the time we are living in right now. 'The Future's Void' is officially out today and not a moment too soon.

Erika posted the lyrics to the record on her blog as well as made a statement. See below:

Like the best of rock lyrics, my intention was that many of these words and lines can be interpreted in different ways.  This includes puns or phrases that take on double meanings as they are repeated.  Similar to “The Future’s Void”…  (solace/soulless, earn/urn, my Lucifer/might loose some fur, etc)

A few of these songs I pored over and edited heavily, but most of them were written through improvisation and quite often the take where the lyrics are still being written is the one that ended up on the track.  I like the urgency of that “first take” vibe, and I like the quality of something that is being created in the moment.  I feel like there is a simplicity and a truth to it, and that often gets taken away if you spend too much time consciously editing.

Pop in your local record store, choice of digital outlet OR order 'The Future’s Void' directly from us on CD, Cassette and LP (limited edition lavender vinyl), and there’s a shirt bundle, too.

EMA : 'The Future's Void' Streaming via NPR's "First Listen" / Free Brooklyn Show Details

"Blending the expansive vision of speculative fiction with the often personal approach of gender-troubling indie rock, The Future's Void is not so much a concept record as a sonic alternate universe through which many elements float, some familiar and some weird. Musically, it blends the digital and analog in uncanny ways that unsettle any one interpretation." That's Ann Powers' take on EMA's 'The Future's Void', and 8 days in advance of the North American release of said LP/CD/digital album, NPR's "First Listen" is streaming the full album here.

As mentioned in this space last week , EMA will be playing Union Pool on Friday, April 11.  The only way to obtain a ticket is by purchasing  'The Future's Void' at one of the following NYC record stores starting Tuesday, April 8 :

Other Music
Rough Trade
Permanent
Academy

The Future's Void is available for preorder on CD, Cassette and LP (limited edition lavender vinyl), and there's a shirt bundle, too.

In advance of April 8th's release of the new EMA LP/CD/digital album 'The Future's Void', here's a premiere of one of the album's standout tracks, "3Jane".

from Erika
:
No one was really ever that mean to me on the internet. I never had that “thing” that happens when you wake up one morning and somehow your life is ruined because a mortifying picture goes viral or a “funny” tweet becomes horribly misread. Sure, there were bitchy things in the comments of videos, but organized trolls never unleashed a wave of death threats on me, and only a few people suggested that I kill myself.

So the internet never actually did that to me. But it did that to somebody. And now we all have this stupid crippling fear that someday it will happen to us. And the likelihood increases as you move from relative obscurity to becoming more broadly visible on the internet. There are more cameras on you, more chances to be quoted saying something stupid, and more people out there who relish seeing successful people disgraced and dethroned.

Do you have that fear yet? Do you want it?

Another thing that really fucked me up is that somewhere along the way I feel like I lost control of my image. I feel very confident in making the music I want to make, but I’m not a Mouseketeer. I can try to do it all myself but I run out of time. I don’t know how to pose for a photographer and sometimes when I’m in front of somebody else’s camera I don’t know what to do. So I would do the thing that I had seen before a million times in fashion mags and advertisements because I wanted to do a “good job.” And little by little, these pictures became more sexy and pouty until I didn’t recognize myself anymore. And those images went all around, and the bold-faced pull quotes from articles that didn’t quite get it right were right there next to the too sexy images until they became a thing both separate from me and also made up of me. I got weird disassociation. I got a weird neuromancer and I dyed my hair black and unplugged.

Disassociation is a modern disease

I didn’t set out to write this song and I didn’t know when I wrote it a year ago that right now it would be ok to talk about the internet, because at the time it felt forbidden and shameful to talk about. It just all came out in a flood, a stream of consciousness. And I’m still kind of self-conscious that I said those things out loud. But I don’t think these feelings are unique to me, and I often find that the things that scare and embarrass you are the things that are worth saying.

At the end of the day all I can really do is tell the truth, the truth of what happened and how it made me feel. And if at that point, if you wanna call me a cunt in the youtube comments, that’s on you.

PS –so i wanted this missive to be perfect but instead i kind of just partied IRL. I found myself suddenly with friends and we are imbibing and watching funny videos and laughing. So that’s why this post is a little raw. And I think I’m ok with that.
