The MataBlog is edited by Matador Records’ co-moaner Gerard Cosloy and individual entries are the work of whoever’s name is next to them. If you enjoyed something in the MataBlog, thank you very much! If there was something you found particularly troubling, please be advised that a) maybe you should read it again and b) the contents of this blog do not necessarily represent the opinions of Matador Records, Beggars Group, the combined staff of either company, nor the Matador artist roster. Opinions are like friends — hardly anyone has one worth listening to.

HÆLOS in session on KEXP Today

In the wake of packed US debut shows in San Francisco and LA, HÆLOS can be heard today on KEXP.org, in session at 3pm eastern (noon pacific time).

During their U.S. visit, the trio have taken over the Matador instagram account and we're hopeful that someone will explain to us how we're supposed to take it back.

"This Day In Matador History" + "What's Up Matador" : Strolls Down Memory Lane (OR ARE YOU BEING CHASED?)

You know the old saying, "those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it?" Me neither. I have heard, however, that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Alternately, Chris Lombardi has always known the value of doing different insane things throughout the passage of time, the latest of which being his edict that we introduce, "This Day In Matador History", a website that chronicles the label's low, high and medium water marks from Chris' inception of the imprint in 1989, to the present day. One of our colleagues has hopefully described the site as, "a gateway for fans of Matador (new and old) to explore the label's archive," but also, it's a great way for staffs of other companies to take their eye off the ball while browsing our salute to, well, ourselves.

It’s not that Matador’s founder and co-owners have no appreciation for music history. It isn’t that we're allergic to nostalgia. It isn’t even that we're so obsessed with the future and/or prefer to judged on the merits of stuff that’s happening right now.

No, the sad truth of the matter is that we’ve done so much damage to our hearing and brains, that we simply don’t remember important events in Matador lore. Like you, we require assistance. Think I’m kidding? What other label of this stature would totally ignore it’s own 25th Anniversary and all the accompanying cash grab / self-congratulatory opportunities?

That’s exactly the sort of monumental gaffe that wouldn’t have gone down had we taken the time to properly chronicle Matador’s story in WEBSITE/CALENDAR FORM. 27 years in, we’re finally getting shit right. Please enjoy (and keep in mind everything we’re doing right now is 1000% better)

To coincide with the launch of this nearly 3 decades-in-the-making-website, we're dragging our absurdist 1997 edutainment spectacular, "What's Up Matador" out of the VHS catacombs and uploading it to YouTube. Hosted by NYC TV fixture, 4-time Emmy winner and "Morton Downey Jr. Show" executive producer Bill Boggs and directed by Chavez' Clay Tarver, the film attempts to explain the inner workings of a lower Manhattan independent record label to an audience of small children (and thank fucking god none of their parents sued us). With special appearances by luminaries including Jon Spencer, Ira Kaplan, Liz Phair and Patrick Amory amongst others, "What's Up Matador" is probably the most accurate document of that particular moment in the music business, surpassed only by CBS' short-lived "Love Monkey" the Andrew Dice Clay star vehicle, "HITZ".

Majical Cloudz - New DIgital EP, 'Wait & See', Tour Commences Tonight

Hi,
We put together this “EP” of songs that we recorded when we were working on “Are You Alone?”, but which didn’t fit on that album for one reason or another. They aren’t more recent than the songs on AYA — they date from different periods of time, one of them is among the earliest songs written for AYA and others are more recent. Despite the fact that it’s a collection of songs that didn’t make the record, I think there is a feeling that links them all together (which is maybe why they didn’t fit on AYA). We hope you enjoy these songs!

We are going on tour in North America and then in Australia in January and February. These are the only dates we have planned right now, so if you want to see us, definitely try to come out to one of these shows. I know some of them are sold out. We tried to move the show into bigger venues where we could (and we did in Vancouver) but in some cases we couldn’t make it happen. So sorry if the show is sold out and you wanted to come.

She-Devils are going to be supporting us on all our shows in North America, which is really exciting. They are really good, so if you’re coming to the shows make sure to come early enough to see them.

It will be our first time in Australia, and it’s difficult to imagine the next time I will be back there (through music or not) so if you’re in Australia and are into our band, this is the time to see us!
Okay!

Coming March 18 : HÆLOS - 'Full Circle'

"Oracle"

On March 18, Matador will be releasing the long-awaited debut album from London trio HÆLOS, 'Full Circle'. Preorder details can be found below.

Every generation has their own version of the blues, music that captures a sense of melancholia and provides a sonic reflecting pool for young lovers, old souls, and the eternally heartbroken. For their darkly shaded and radiant debut album Full Circle, HAELOS have found their blues where others go to find pure, uncut joy: the dancefloor.

The London trio's version of a night out is a million miles away from mirror balls and sweaty bodies, their rippling electronic pop conjuring the exhilarating privacy of a cavernous club's dark pockets and the introspective comedowns that accompany rainy 5 a.m. cab rides.  "It's the music you put on after the club," Lotti Benardout, who shares vocal duties with her other bandmates, states. "You can still feel that energy and euphoria, but it might bring you back to reflect on certain moments or memories."

The three bandmates decided to collaborate having been working on separate projects. Arthur Delaney and Dom Goldsmith had been working on material under the working title of HÆLOS; Lotti had been writing with Dom who was producing an EP for her at the time. The nocturnal, throbbing "Dust" was the first finished work to come from the trio's newly formed union; over the course of the following year, the rest of Full Circle's shadowy sounds came together. "When you don't know people that well, you can look back at things and retell your story," Benardout speaks on HAELOS' ability to mature from relative strangers into a cohesive musical unit. "It's new again. There's something quite cathartic about it."

Catharsis is, indeed, the name of Full Circle's game, an embodiment of a sound that has been referred to as "dark euphoria". Throughout the album, HÆLOS reconstruct the firmament of dance sounds past and present to construct an exquisitely elegiac mood that retains a sense of presence as it conveys the pain of emotional distance. Every moment of uneasy reflection is matched by quiet explosions—Delaney's forceful shouts over yo-yo synths on Full Circle's title track, Benardout's layered pleas over Goldsmith's cascading drum breaks on "Pray," and the soaring "Separate Lives," which hollows out drum'n'bass' propulsive patter to form an atmosphere that's as gently disruptive as it is emotionally nourishing. Throughout the album's loudest and most peaceful moments alike, Full Circle retains a pristine intimacy thanks to Goldsmith's keen ear for behind-the-boards magic; his touch gives the album a hermetic feel that stays with you long after it ends.

We're living in a time where the struggle to make human connections is hampered by our inability to unplug, and so Full Circle is a glorious, gorgeous contradiction of sorts: emotional pop that perfectly captures ageless emotional conundrums, featuring music that could only be made in the present day. "We all have a shared human experience," opines Delaney, HAELOS' main lyrical contributor. "As much as we try to run away from feelings with all the distractions around us, they always follow us around. They're a constant thing that unites us all." And so Full Circle is the sound of three individuals finding common ground, for themselves and for anyone who's ever believed that it's impossible to move your body without listening to your own heart.
