Julien Baker - "Heatwave" Premiere & Lyric Video

"Heatwave" - lyric video by Sabrina Nichols), from 'Little Oblivions', out this Friday, February 26

"Maybe it's a trite or well-trod topic, but ‘Heatwave’ is really just about being confronted with how much time I spend worrying about things that are trivial. I was stuck in traffic because a car had randomly combusted, and it made me feel so stupid for being concerned with the things I had been anxious about earlier that day. It was just such a poignant thing, an event that communicated a lot of complex things in a single image. So I wrote a song about it. I know I'm not the first person to witness an atrocity and consider my own mortality or life's fragility because of it, but that truly was my experience. Theoretically the lesson or symbolism to be interpreted there is that life is precious and it's not worth it to give your time and energy to negative thoughts, but jesus, how could you be a person alive on earth right now and not have negative thoughts? It's certainly less romantic to say that the consideration of life's fragility made me feel relieved at my own inconsequence, but it's true; it is comforting to think of the minuscule role everyone plays in the human drama, to realize we have more choice about what we give power over us than we maybe thought." - Julien Baker

The 20th Anniversary of Spoon's 'Girls Can Tell'

“Girls Can Tell was the Hail Mary pass that absolutely no one thought was gonna find a receiver. It was the record where the colors changed, trains collided, and suddenly we sounded a lot more like us than we’d ever sounded before. At the time it felt like a last chance and it also felt like the last gasp of youth, which seems a little funny now considering how shaped it was by oldies radio, the Supremes, the Kinks, and Eleanor Friedberger's cassette of Get Happy. The big idea behind Girls Can Tell was to take stock of the band’s MO from inception until that point, to carefully consider all the things we’d been trying to do and the way we'd been doing them, and then set out specifically to avoid all of it. To instead come up with some new songs that were actually about where I was at and how I was feeling! Songs that knew no cool rules. Songs that cried themselves to sleep at night and got up and shook themselves by the collar the next morning. It was the record that sorted out how much fight we had left in us. It came out February 20, 2001.”

“And now here’s the #GirlsCanTell Deluxe Playlist - all the tracks from the album plus songs I was obsessed with and forcing on my bandmates at the time. It’s possible you'll notice some hints of You’re Lookin Fine in The Fitted Shirt, or some very similar opening lyrics in Possession and Anything You Want, or some amateur stabs at the Supremes’ rhythm section on Take The Fifth. All liberally borrowed when we needed it most, now gratefully returned via the digital sea.” — BD

Out Today : Bailter Space - 'Wammo', 25 Anniversary Remastered Edition

"Splat" (director, Julie Hermelin

(photo Jill Greenberg)

As previously touted in this space, the 25th anniversary remastered edition of Bailter Space's 'Wammo' is available today via all streaming services, finer record shops and mail order.  Author and labelmate Andrew Earles once wrote of 'Wammo', "Bailter Space's final album for Matador (fifth overall) finds the band showing everyone how skilled it was at erasing any lines of demarcation separating wickedly catchy pop songs and washes of guitar noise and toothy dynamics."  Alister Parker, Brent McLachlan and John Halvorsen  are still erasing lines (sonic and otherwise) to this very day, so where's their Hall Of Fame nomination?

Preorder / stream : 'Wammo'

Kim Gordon - "Hungry Baby" (Music Video)

Purchase / Stream No Home Record

Today, legendary musician and multi-disciplinary artist Kim Gordon releases the new video for the No Home Record track ‘Hungry Baby’, directed by Clara Balzary and starring Coco Gordon-Moore.

Clara Balzary says of the video, “I came up with the idea for the video after listening to “Hungry Baby” on a 2020 angst fueled walk around my suburban neighborhood. Coco is an amazing performer, and loved her as this character with such a raging internal world set against that quiet + empty backdrop of the parking lot. I’m so grateful to Kim for being so supportive and open to the idea. She is such a role model as someone for whom an art practice always comes before worries about ego or branding. The talented Sadie Wilking worked with Coco on choreography, and we couldn’t have done any of it without the legendary cinematographer and friend, Christopher Blauvelt, who is always so generous with his craft.”

Julien Baker - "Favor" (Premiere & Lyric Video)

"Favor" (lyric video by Sabrina Nichols)

"Favor" is the third track from Julien Baker's eagerly anticipated 3rd album, "Little Oblivions", out February 26.

“I used to think about myself, like I was a talented liar,” Baker sings on the track, “turns out that all my friends were trying to do me a favor.” Here those friends are Baker’s boygenius collaborators, Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers. Phoebe says, “Julien is one of those people whose opinion you want to hear about everything. A true critical thinker with an ever-changing and ridiculously articulate worldview. Her music changes in the same way, and this record is my favorite thing she’s ever done. I’m sure I’ll think the same about the next one.”

Lucy noted, “We sang on "Favor" in Nashville the same day we recorded vocals for Graceland Too and a song of mine. That day had the same atmosphere as when we recorded the boygenius EP. Making music was just a natural result of being together, easy as can be but also rare in a way that feels irreplicable. I love the song for its stark but sensitive picture of friendship, what it looks like to recover from broken trust. Makes me think about how truth only ever breaks what should be broken, and how love is never one of those things. I’m always honored to be brought into Julien’s life and music.”

Initially scheduled for release last year, but delayed due to production issues, we are pleased to announce that 'GANG OF FOUR: 77-81' will now be out March 12 and available in LP and CD editions.

This stunning limited-edition box set gathers Gang of Four’s influential early work – including 'Entertainment!' and 'Solid Gold' (both remastered from the original analog tapes), an exclusive singles LP, and an exclusive double LP of the never officially released 'Live at American Indian Center' 1980. Additionally, the package includes two new badges, a C90 cassette tape compiling 26 never-before-issued outtakes, rarities and studio demos from 'Entertainment!' and 'Solid Gold', and an epic 100-page, full-color hardbound book.

The book details the history and legacy of the original Gang of Four with never-before-seen photos, contributions from surviving original band members, rare posters, ephemera, flyers, essays, artwork, liner notes and more. It also marks the first official publication of their lyrics.

The CD version of the box will be out April 23rd. It will not include the badges or the C90. The demo recordings will instead be made available through a download code.

Today, you can watch a lyric video for the song “Damaged Goods” and listen to the demo of the unreleased song “Elevator,” which is included on the cassette.

Gang of Four’s Jon King on “Elevator”:
Andy & I both lived in a shitty house in Leeds where we used to sing The Band or Muddy Waters songs, chugging disgusting homebrew beer that I fermented in a dustbin. We started writing songs - mostly homages to Dr. Feelgood or the Velvets - recording them on a crappy cassette player. Inspired by the New York scene and with UK punk rock on a thrilling rampage, Hugo, Gill, and I formed a band.

The first couple of gigs were those early songs and a fast Beatles cover. Dave joining us raised the bar. He was really good, and we quickly came up with new material we all wrote together, built on grooves from Dave & Hugo, over which Andy and I would improvise until we’d got somewhere.

“Elevator” always worked well live. It was a keeper until it wasn’t. By the time we got into the Workhouse studio to record ‘Entertainment', it was in the dumper. I’d forgotten ever writing it until it was dug up for the box set cassette. I like it: the jangly riff, propulsive rhythm, and dopey lyrics take me right back to the day.

Yesterday marks the one-year anniversary of Andy Gill’s passing. A new tribute album, 'The Problem of Leisure: A Celebration of Andy Gill and Gang of Four', will be released in May via Gill Music and features contributions from Flea and John Frusciante, Warpaint, La Roux, and more.
