Snail Mail - Rescheduled 2021-22 Tour Dates

A MESSAGE FROM SNAIL MAIL’S LINDSEY JORDAN

Lindsey here - unfortunately, with terrible news this time. I’ve been struggling with my vocal health more and more each year. I lose my voice after a couple days of singing. I went to see an ENT last week and they found massive polyps in my vocal cords (surprisingly from vocal trauma due to talking!! shocker lol) that need to be operated on to prevent permanent damage to my voice. The recovery time is three months/speech therapy and in an effort to make sure the rest of the tour can happen, I will be postponing our first US tour which was supposed to begin this week as well as our initial UK/Euro tour :(. I’m devastated to be pushing off shows even longer.  My team is working overtime to reschedule everything that we're postponing--we will have everything rescheduled imminently. Thank you so much for all the support you've given the new record so far.

Due to the immediate need for vocal cord surgery, Snail Mail’s Lindsey Jordan has announced today that the 2021 US and early 2022 UK and EU tour dates will be rescheduled. The 2022 North American spring tour dates will go on as planned. All US 2021 tour dates have already been rescheduled and all purchased tickets will be honored for the new dates.

The UK and EU tour dates originally scheduled for February and March of 2022 are in the process of being rescheduled now and will be announced soon. All original tickets will be honored for the rescheduled dates. All 2022 North American tour dates will remain the same, kicking off on April 5 and hitting major venues across the country including Kings Theatre in Brooklyn on April 7, the Riviera Theatre in Chicago on April 14 and the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles on April 27. All dates are listed below.

Fucked Up - "Do All Words Can Do"

Pre-order / Stream the newly released single Do All Words Can Do

Pre-order / Stream David Comes To Life

Next month, Matador will honor the 10th anniversary of Fucked Up’s early ’10s masterwork David Comes to Life with a limited-edition lightbulb-yellow 2xLP reissue. That album –which clocks in at 78-minutes –may be as heavy a dose of genre-bursting progressive-psychedelic-hardcore punk brilliance as anybody can comfortably ingest at once.

But if we’re somehow underestimating you, there’s more. On March 25th, Fucked Up will release Do All Words Can Do, a nine-track compilation gathering David era-appropriate rarities and B-sides, all of which were previously available only on 7”.

(Pictured above: David Comes To Life 10th anniversary vinyl, out Dec 10)
The band will also tour North America (East and West Coast dates) and the UK early next year performing the album in full.

Fucked Up’s Jonah Falco, Sandy Miranda, and Josh Zucker also appear on the most recent episode of Matador's Revisionist History podcast. Joined by friend and tour-mate Patrick Stickles of Titus Andronicus–whose own punk rock concept album, The Monitor, also turns 10 this year–the conversation offers insight (and entertaining dirt) on the writing and recording of DCTL. Spoon - "Christmas Time (Is Here Again)"

Stream "Christmas Time (Is Here Again)"

Pre-order Lucifer on the Sofa / Stream "The Hardest Cut"

Spoon has shared their take on The Beatles 1967 fan club single "Christmas Time (Is Here Again)" for Spotify Singles: Holiday Edition 2021. The collection marks the fifth year of Spotify Singles: Holiday and includes a wide range of covers and originals, from artists across a myriad of genres, in hopes of connecting friends and family from afar as they listen. Recorded at Jim Eno’s Public HiFi studio in Austin, frontman Britt Daniel says about the track, “Recording ‘Christmas Time (Is Here Again)’ was a group effort that pulled us away from rehearsals and quickly sent us down a turbulent path of what you might call the Christmas spirit. And it’s our song with the most band members doing vocals ever - pretty sure I’m counting four. THE WAR ON CHRISTMAS IS OVER.”

Spoon recently announced the forthcoming release of their tenth studio album, Lucifer On the Sofa, out February 11th, 2022. The album was co-produced by Spoon and Mark Rankin (Adele, Queens of the Stone Age) and features contributions from Dave Fridmann and Justin Raisen. It’s the band’s purest rock ’n roll record to date. Texas-made, it is the first set of songs that the quintet has put to tape in its hometown of Austin in more than a decade and bottles the physical thrill of a band tearing up a packed room. It’s an album of intensity and intimacy, where the music’s harshest edges feel as vivid as the directions quietly murmured into the mic on the first take.  According to frontman Britt Daniel, “It’s the sound of classic rock as written by a guy who never did get Eric Clapton.”

Horsegirl - "Billy" + March 2022 Tour Dates

(photo: Todd Fisher)

Stream "Billy" / Pre-order 7"

Chicago’s Horsegirl, the trio of 17-19 year olds Penelope Lowenstein (she/her), Nora Cheng (she/her), and Gigi Reece (they/them), present “Billy,” their debut single/video via their new label, Matador. In conjunction, they announce a North American tour, during which they’ll make their SXSW debut and play their first show ever in many of these cities. Having only formed in 2019, Horsegirl’s first three singles captured the ears and attention of fans and critics worldwide.

Recorded at Chicago’s Electrical Audio and co-produced by the band and legendary producer John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, Kurt Vile), “Billy” marks a significant evolution for the young band. The “Billy” 7”, out March 25 and available for pre-order today, features a cover of the Minutemen’s “History Lesson Part 2” on the b-side (available only on the 7”). Horsegirl discuss creating the song and video:

There was a period of last year where the three of us spent every day together writing and recording. It was during this time, when we practically lived in Penelope’s basement, that ‘Billy’ was written. Penelope had recently read about Nick Drake's alternate tunings prompting her to detune her guitar, while Nora overlaid a rhythmic vocal line detailing the life of a fictional character, Billy. At the time, we had been listening to a lot of New Zealand underground bands (80’s/90’s Flying Nun). With that scrappiness in mind, we worked the rest of the song out through improvising together, and ‘Billy’ quickly fell into place.

“‘Billy’ is our first release with a label, and it feels particularly special that it is with Matador, whom we have admired since we were young. After a year of hard work, we are very happy to finally share music, especially with those who have uplifted Horsegirl in the last year. We feel so thankful to have been able to record this song with John Agnello, whose work we adore, at Electrical Audio, a Chicago institution. Recording this song was a dream experience for us, and John has become a very trusted mentor.

“We shot the ‘Billy’ music video with our friends on a rainy Chicago day and feel particularly thankful for everyone who danced the twist with us, and those who gave us their apartment, camera equipment, film expertise, and feedback. This video is a love letter to our city and friends. The song is a love letter to past music scenes we wish we could have witnessed. Please listen to ‘Billy’ in your kitchen with a group of good friends and dance along– we can’t wait to share it with you.

In Space No One Can Hear You Stream : 25% Off (Almost) All Matador Titles

In the race for (commercial) outer space, Matador is in first place. We just can’t get our CEO back -- he’s been up there for ages (#marooned, moron’d, etc.). But to celebrate this pending tragedy, we’re putting anything and everything (save for Snail Mail’s ‘Valentine’ and any preorders) onsale for 25% off  now through December 1.

Some people laughed when our guy said he was opening a pressing plant on the surface of Mars, but with the entire industry backed up, who's laughing now?  Well, he's laughing for sure, but not in a good way.

Mdou Moctar - Live at The Niger River

Purchase / Stream Afrique Victime

Last winter, bassist Mikey Coltun travelled to Niamey, Niger to join his bandmates – Mdou Moctar, Ahmoudou Madassane, and Souleymane Ibrahim – and to prepare for the release of the group’s Matador Records debut, Afrique Victime.

To date, that trip has yielded a documentary, a Tiny Desk (Home) concert, and a live stream. Unbelievably, there’s still more to see.

Today, you can set eyes on Mdou Moctar: Live at the Niger River. Filmed at dawn beside a campfire and a pot of Tuareg tea, the video captures stripped-down generator-powered performances of the songs “Tala Tannam,” “Bissmilahi Atagh,” “Ya Habibti,” and “Chismiten.”

From Mikey Coltun:

Before it was decided that it was too unsafe for us to travel together outside the Niger capital, Niamey, we were planning to do concerts in villages throughout Niger, all with beautiful scenery. When Ahmoudou and I spent some time together at the beginning of the trip, we went location scouting in Niamey to see how we can achieve something similar while staying around the capital.

A friend of ours had taken us to a place on the outskirts of Niamey, "In the bush". This land was right on the Niger River: a river flowing through Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Nigeria. Brainstorming different locations for filming, we came up with the idea to film a few songs at this location as the sun was coming up one morning.

On the night before I departed Niger, we played a late concert, loaded everything into Mdou's car, packed in there all together, and dropped off the gear to the location about 30 minutes away. Mdou decided to sleep on location with the gear so none of it gets stolen. The rest of us woke up the next morning at 4am, got into the car, picked up breakfast at a bakery, and drove to the location.

We set up quickly as we didn't want to lose filming the sun coming up. We made a fire to keep us warm and also to keep the Tuareg tea brewing while we played. As we started playing “Tala Tannam” the sun came up and the two-colored Saharan bird, the pied crow, the symbol for Mdou Moctar, flew above us. Midway through the session we were greeted by a pack of goats coming towards us from who knows where. They stopped and listened for a bit. Totally spontaneous, as things usually are for the Mdou Moctar group. This session proved to be one of the most beautiful performances we've played together.

Moctar was last seen wowing audiences on the band’s nearly sold out fall US tour. Early next year, they will hit the road once again performing dates throughout North America and in Europe. Find the complete itinerary below.

Lucy Dacus - "Thumbs Again"

(photo : Marin Leong)

Before there was news of 'Home Video', an album which captured the complexities of Lucy Dacus’ formative years growing up in Richmond, VA, leading her to be named “one of the best songwriters of her generation” (Rolling Stone), Lucy presented the long-awaited “Thumbs” to the world. Debuted on tour in 2018 while on the road with boygenius, “Thumbs” became a fan favorite, immediately and deeply impacting audiences: “Depending on what you’ve been through in your life, those words might leave you weeping in public, too,” commented Stereogum. Lucy now releases a full-band version of the arresting original, titled “Thumbs Again.” Here, the simple instrumental backbone of “Thumbs” is filled out with electric guitar, synth, and drums and is how many have heard the song on Lucy’s recent tour.

Following last week’s performance on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon", Lucy has announced a winter 2022 North American tour, including rescheduled dates for five shows. These new dates follow an incredible fall tour that featured three nights of sold out shows at both New York’s Brooklyn Steel and Washington DC’s 9:30 Club, and precede her UK and European tour in support of 'Home Video'.

Snail Mail - 'Valentine', Out Today, Appearing on "The Late Show WIth Stephen Colbert" Tonight

You know how we and other esteemed labels sometimes refer to an upcoming album as "highly anticipated"? I'm gonna let you in on a little secret -- sometimes they're only mildly anticipated. The only people highly anticipating are the band members, their parents and maybe their creditors. This is a little something we like to call SHOW BUSINESS HYPERBOLE. In this instance, however, we can with great authority pronounce today's official release of the 2nd Snail Mail album, 'Valentine' as highly anticipated. A profusely thank you to everyone who has nagged us to death about it.

Tonight you can catch Snail Mail on an 11:35pm (10:35 central) telecast of the Columbia Broadcasting System's "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert". Elsewhere, we have described this as Snail Mail's late night television debut, an unfortunate diss to Carson Daly which was entirely inadvertent on our part. This is not the first time we've had to apologize to a former late night television host while in the process of promoting an appearance on a contemporary program (we were never able to bury the hatchet with Tom Snyder, for instance), and it's too late to say we don't want this to become a habit because we here we are. Anyhow, tune in tonight, it's gonna be great.

At 2pm eastern today, WPLN News' Paige Pfleger will be joined by Snail Mail's Lindsey Jordan and Mac DeMarco in a live conversation about 'Valentine' (see above)

Matador Revisionist History Podcast - Episode 4: Fucked Up & Titus Andronicus

Listen to the Matador Revisionist History Podcast HERE.

Stream / pre-order limited lightbulb yellow LP edition of David Comes To Life HERE.

Today we pull back the curtain on the fourth installment of the Matador Revisionist History podcast, which pairs artists and collaborators to discuss a Matador album celebrating a noteworthy anniversary.

This episode honors Fucked Up’s epic rock opera, David Comes to Life (2011), which first hit shelves 10 years ago last June.

Here band members Jonah Falco (Mr. Jo), Sandy Miranda (Mustard Gas), and Josh Zucker (Gulag) look back on the early ’10s with friend and tour-mate Patrick Stickles (Titus Andronicus), himself no stranger to punk rock concept albums. Discussion is nudged along by our host, Matt Sweeney.

Their chat yields insight into the writing and recording of David Comes to Life, but also entertaining tangents on composer Jim Steinman’s lewd oblique strategies, roady-ing as a path to physical fitness, and the secret to Fucked Up’s longevity (“If anybody tries to grow and do something better, tear them down”).
