Now Streaming At NPR First Listen : Pavement's 'The Secret History, Vol.1'

(photo courtesy The Spiral Stairs Archives)

One week prior to release, 'The Secret History, Vol. 1', the Pavement double LP rarities comp. touted in this space previously, is streaming today via NPR Music. NPR's Jason Heller writes, "these songs have all been floating around for years, either on their original releases, as bonus tracks on reissued albums, or as bootlegs. But bundling them has a purpose, aside from simple commerce: In a recent Pitchfork interview, Malkmus called History "the album that could have been between Slanted And Enchanted and Crooked Rain [the album on which 'Cut Your Hair' appears]." He's right. There's a coherence to the chaos of these 30 misfit songs, each one an off-kilter, self-sabotaging gem. By stringing them together, they speak powerfully to the way Pavement celebrated songcraft while gnawing at its foundations. If the '90s had turned out differently, Pavement could have been as popular as, say, Weezer. Instead, as History proves, they were always destined for something stranger."    Also, Weezer are/were terrible!  Thanks, Jason!

Listen to Majical Cloudz' "Savage"

Composed around the same time that Devon Welsh wrote Impersonator, "Savage" has been an integral part of Majical Cloudz' live show for quite some time.

In regards to "Savage", Devon Welsh of Majical Cloudz notes "I think it's important to explain a song a little bit, but not too much. The song is written about a specific set of circumstances and experiences, and Matt and I did such-and-such when we recorded it, but ultimately what the song is 'about' is less important than how and why it is meaningful for you when you listen to it. Explaining too much about the details of the song is not the point, so I won't. "Savage" is about a friendship, it's mysteries and it's moments of excitement, and the way drugs played into all of it. It's about letting go of a relationship as it changes and the emotions that go along with that."

"Savage" is the first new material the duo has released following the release of Impersonator earlier this year.

Kurt Vile - "Feel My Pain" MP3 - from the 'It's A Big World Out There (And I Am Scared)' EP

As previously touted in this space
, on November 19, we're releasing a new, 7-song 12" EP from Kurt Vile, 'It's A Big World Out There (And I Am Scared)' (preorder here) ; all 7 tracks will comprise the bonus disc on the 2XCD, 'Wakin On A Pretty Daze: Deluxe Daze (Post Haze)', also in stores November 19 (preorder here).  Here's an MP3 from from the new EP, "Feel My Pain"

"Feel My Pain" - MP3

Kurt writes :
This track was recorded during the first cluster of sessions at Dreamland Studios, May 2012.
(same sessions that conjured up most of album opener "wakin on a pretty day" I should add!)

"Feel My Pain" is a particularly meticulous guitar composition that i remember playing over and over back when writing it and then even more so when i had finished it, sort-of possessed.

We added a lot to this later only to strip it back again favoring the raw to the chamber-pop this go 'round. Spectral arrangement and a mellow-ominous delivery (if such a thing is possible)...

RL- bass

engineered by John Agnello
mixed by Rob Laakso

"Ambulancer" - A New Song From Lee Ranaldo & The Dust

Lee Ranaldo and his faithful Dust (Steve Shelley, Alan Licht, and Tim Luntzel) revealed the second song of their forthcoming LP "Last Night On Earth" today via Rolling Stone:

Lee tells RS that the song originated acoustically and resembling Neil Young's "Ambulance Blues," before morphing & expanding (as most of the songs on this album do) into a beautifully turbulent, darkly melodic guitar freakout.

You can also check out another album track, "Lecce, Leaving," HERE. "Last Night On Earth" is out October 8.

Majical Cloudz "Bugs Don't Buzz"

"Bugs Don't Buzz" is one of the many highlights of Majical Cloudz album 'Impersonator'  & and the band's live show (which are happening right now!). Based around a single, looped piano progression, the song's striking simplicity is one of those many secrets behind what makes Majical Cloudz so evocative.

Majical Cloudz' Devon Welsh explains of 'Impersonator'

In the last few years there’s been a massive explosion of amazing music made with computers, samplers and other electronic equipment. The possibilities became nearly endless and musicians indulged those possibilities. I love that kind of music but it also started to overwhelm me. I wasn’t cut out for the maximalist expressions of that style. So I took a break from music, and when I started again it was to make music that barely existed and felt like stillness more than movement. Where the songs could be more about humanness. I love all forms of electronic music, techno, house, rave, hip-hop, but I never want to feel like
the music I’m making is just about stylistic play. The easiest way for me to do that is try to make something without obvious movement; where the music isn’t overstuffed sonically or referentially, it’s emptied out as much as possible. So the vision for Impersonator was to communicate a lot with as little as possible. It’s not meant to energize and turn you out to the world, it’s meant to do the opposite; it’s more like a cocoon.

'Impersonator''s expressive power and swagger belie its extremely minimal music. These are intensely lyrical songs about death, patience, family, friendship, and desire, with Welsh’s rich vocals atop Matthew Otto Kolaitis' quiet looped waves of white noise, filtered synths and sparse thuds.

The album is available for pre-order now on all formats at the Matador store & iTunes.

This Spring, Majical Cloudz will be touring with Youth Lagoon in North America & a few headlining dates in Europe.

Kurt Vile - "Never Run Away" debuts on the CW in Philly

Our advertising ninja Blake Thomas forgot to tell any of us (perhaps his mind was elsewhere) but last night Kurt debuted the single version of "Never Run Away" (from the upcoming album Wakin On A Pretty Daze, out April 9) with the cutest little infomercial EVER - it aired on the CW network in Philadelphia. Blake kicked us the file for optimum viewing, but we've also got a rip of the infomercial itself which a Kurt superfan (OK, Philebrity) passed our way:

You can download "Never Run Away (Single Version)" here.

Kurt Vile - Wakin On A Pretty Daze and Wakin On a Pretty Day

Kurt Vile's new album WAKIN ON A PRETTY DAZE will come out on April 9. He recorded it with producer John Agnello at a multitude of different studios throughout the Northeast in the second half of last year. It is a 69-minute long double album.

Check out the opening track WAKIN ON A PRETTY DAY. You can download it as an MP3 or listen on YouTube, accompanied by outtake footage from the Steve Powers (ESPO) documentary about the album cover mural. (Note: this is NOT the music video. The real video will be revealed in good time.)

Wakin On A Pretty Day (192k mp3)

Track list:

Side A:
1. Wakin On A Pretty Day
2. KV Crimes
3. Was All Talk

Side B:
4. Girl Called Alex
5. Never Run Away
6. Pure Pain

Side C:
7. Too Hard
8. Shame Chamber
9. Snowflakes Are Dancing

Side D:

11. Goldtone

The record will of course be available on several different formats, as follows:

Standard double vinyl gatefold with printed innersleeves and lyric sheet

Deluxe double vinyl gatefold with different cover depicting the blank building wall before Steve Powers painted it, and including a sticker sheet of the Powers paintings so that you can customize your own album artwork. This version includes the printed innersleeves and lyric sheet, but is also on limited, numbered BLUE VINYL.

First edition CD will be in a mini-gatefold like the LP cover, with the disc in a printed innersleeve in one pocket, and fold-out lyric sheet and insert in the other pocket.

PREORDER THE PHYSICAL EDITIONS HERE

The iTunes preorder, available as of tomorrow, February 12, will include an instant download of "Wakin On A Pretty Day" PLUS a preorder-only bonus track entitled "The Ghost Of Freddy Roach." You can only get this bonus track by preordering the album at iTunes. You'll receive the track on the April 9 release date along with the full album.

More news. If you're in New York City, we're going to be heading over to the legendary Electric Lady Studios tomorrow (Tuesday, February 12) to listen to the album in all its glory and have some drinks, specifically a custom-made cocktail entitled the Pretty Daze. Interested in attending? Head over to Brooklyn Vegan for a chance to win! Space is extremely limited!

Paul Banks Drops Mixtape featuring El-P, High Prizm, Mike G and Talib

Just in from the department of unexpectedness.... Banks (no, not Lloyd) has upped a mixtape and it's called EVERYBODY ON MY DICK LIKE THEY SUPPOSED TO BE.

Actually, we kinda knew this was happening.  Paul sent over a rough mixtape about 9 months ago of his beats and production and it was genius. And what, with all the Kendricks and the A$APs and whatever, we thought a mixtape would take Banks to new heights if we got it out months before release.

But the long-standing issues with Matador and the rap game quickly blew up our pre-release hype strategy.  Long story short, we have earned a certain "cash-only" rep in the hip hop world requiring us to either send briefcases handcuffed to interns to studios deep in Flatbush or.... call in favors which takes time.

In this case, Paul called in a some mega-favors and got features from El-P, Talib, Mike G, and... hold up, HIGH PRIZM (né High Priest).

(Programming note, I've spent the entire morning doing things to all sorts of websites that we aren't ever allowed to do.  I AM DARKTOOB. And I feel like Dean Bein.)

Listen to the whole thing over on Soundcloud:

The El-P cut entitled "Quite Enough" has been excerpted for those needing "an entry point".

AC Newman - "Encyclopedia Of Classic Takedowns", The 2nd MP3 from 'Shut Down The Streets'

(of course, by "out now", we mean "out October 9")

As mentioned in this space a few weeks ago, on October 9 Matador will be releasing the 3rd A.C. Newman album, 'Shut Down The Streets'.   The '70's folk/pop-inflected masterpiece was dubbed "an album of understated elegance and strength" by one of our more insightful (and good-looking) executives, and here's another example of Carl''s musical & lyrical brilliance  to whet your appetite :

"Encyclopedia Of Classic Takedowns" (192 kbps MP3)

There's further recognition, by the way, for one of the continent's great songsmiths (or, if you prefer, songwriters).  Though I'm sworn to secrecy by a colleague (who is so many thousands of miles away, what's she going to do, yell at me?), I'm told one of your favorite New Pornographers songs  will be heard next month as the intro theme music for a popular new television comedy that may or may not feature group therapy as a central theme in the show.  It's not that new Charlie Sheen thing either, so let's not get into that.  There's loads of other places on the internet if all you want to do is complain about Charlie Sheen. He was alright in "Platoon" --- you think you could do better?

Coming October 9 : AC Newman's 'Shut Down The Streets'

On October 9, we'll be releasing the 3rd album from A.C. Newman, 'Shut Down The Streets' (LP/CD/digital)  the most powerful and personal solo work to date from the New Pornographers founder.  While Newman long ago staked a claim for being one of this continent's finest pop craftsmen, 'Streets' represents a change in tone and a bigger change in subject matter.  I'm not about to give the whole thing away (not when we've commissioned a bio writer to do that, anyway), but a year of joy and sorrow in the Newman household has inspired an album of understated elegance and strength. The bar was already set pretty high where this songwriter is concerned, but this isn't nearly so simple as one of your longtime favorites having delivered 10 great new songs.  Fantastic lyrical chops and musical invention aren't new territory for Carl, but writing so directly about the most important events in his adult life certainly are.

Recorded in Woodstock, NY (and featuring longtime colleague Neko Case), 'Streets' bears the influence of classic ‘70s folk and pop songwriters ranging from Gerry Rafferty to “Daylight Katy”-period Gordon Lightfoot,  Summoning lush sonics with sweeping string & synth backgrounds that are miles away from The New Pornographers' signature sound, 'Shut Down The Streets' is brutally honest, open and affecting in a way Newman has rarely been in the past.

Coming October 23 : The New Paul Banks album, 'Banks'

On October 23, Matador will release the 2nd solo album from Interpol vocalist/guitarist Paul Banks.  With 'Banks' (LP/CD/digital), Paul ditches the Julian Plenti alter-ego, and the resulting 10-song album is a tour-de- force of exhilarating minor-key intensity.

The Base (192 kbps MP3)

Banks was recorded in New York and Connecticut with producer Peter Katis (Interpol, The National, Shearwater, Jónsi...).  The album is  personal and epic, catchy and serpentine - much like your favorite Interpol albums - with Paul's wry humor, bare emotion, and varied influences all in full effect.

track listing :

1. The Base
2. Over My Shoulder
3. Arise, Awake
4. Young Again
5. Lisbon
6. I’ll Sue You
7. Paid For That
8. Another Chance
9. No Mistakes
10. Summertime Is Coming

Chelsea Light Moving "Empires Of Time" & "Frank O'Hara Hit"

The CHELSEA LIGHT MOVING song that was posted July 25 for free entitled Frank O'Hara Hit is actually some other song, by the same band, called Empires Of Time. For your edification and further free-fall into the vortex of confusion we now present you the song Frank O'Hara Hit. The previous message from Thurston Moore pertaining to the intention of this tune is still active. If there's anything to be known about Empires of Time, know that it is a call of honor, and a kiss on the hallowed forehead, to Roky Erickson of Austin, Texas, a maestro of American psychedelic rock n roll of the highest order.

Go for it,

Thurston Moore

Free Song #3 by Chelsea Light Moving: "Frank O'Hara Hit"

[edit: Due to an unfortunate mix up, the track posted here originally on July 25 was the Chelsea Light Moving track "Empires Of Time", this post has now been amended to the correct audio for "Frank O'Hara Hit".]

from on-tour in Europe, Thurston Moore writes:

“Frank O’Hara Hit”

Free Song #3 by

CHELSEA LIGHT MOVING

Today is July 25 and it’s my birthday. I’m 54. This song is called Frank O’Hara Hit. And it’s by this band I started called Chelsea Light Moving. Right now we’re whipping around Europe playing some summer love-cry gigs. I wanted to release this song by the end of July because it’s a meditation on that month through history in events that define a lot of what mytho-romanticizes my heart, both broken and blessed at the moment. On July 25, 1965 Bob Dylan with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band delivered to rock n’ roll the dissident soul of folk music and poetry. For many it was already a viable meeting but Dylan set it on fire for the world to see. And he was famously cursed and booed by the gatekeepers of old ways wariness.  The song he sang was Phantom Engineer (later titled It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry). On July 24, 1966 the NYC poet Frank O’Hara was struck by a dune buggy while hanging out on Fire Island, and died the next day. O’Hara knew poetry in all it’s formalist glory and like John Cage’s ear to music liberated it for writers for an unending time. In his essay Personism: A Manifesto (published in Leroi Jones’ Yugen magazine in 1961) he writes, "I don't ... like rhythm, assonance, all that stuff. You just go on your nerve. If someone's chasing you down the street with a knife you just run, you don't turn around and shout, 'Give it up! I was a track star for Mineola Prep’…As for measure and other technical apparatus, that's just common sense: if you're going to buy a pair of pants you want them to be tight enough so everyone will want to go to bed with you. There's nothing metaphysical about it." On July 26, 1943 Mick Jagger was born in Dartford, Kent, England and would become the 20th century’s erotic pinup for the unsafety of teeny bop girls everywhere preaching the gospel soaked blues of African-American music that their parents were most likely frightened to death of. His skill in getting it and keeping it together and continuing to honor the magic that rocks the fuck out when Howlin’ Wolf hit the mic is what inspires every tantalizing facet of real rock n’ roll. On July 29, 1966 our hero Bobby Dylan crashed his motorbike while taking it for a spin in Woodstock He had just recorded three lightning rod LPs (Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde), a book of writing (Tarantula) and was taking a breather between a just finished nine month world tour (where he was facing audiences half pissed at his “Judas!” betrayal of folk purity) and readying for sixty-four American gigs booked by money hog Albert Grossman. He was amphetamine skinny and breathing high-octane annunciation. He returned to us a man in control of his image and he provocatively crushed celebrity underfoot like a shitty Marlboro. Let us kiss our lovers gently in July as the lathered sunrays of August take us into contemplation and a sweet trust to a future we will always fight for. In rock n roll, soul, tenderness and piety.
