Great Music For Terrible Times : 25% Off Holiday Sale

Dear Citizens of Earth,

As we reach the end of 2018, it would not be an exaggeration to say we’re in the midst of many difficult moments in human history.  The icecaps are melting.   America is on the brink of a constitutional crisis.  You can’t walk 15 feet in any major metropolis without breaking your neck on a discarded scooter.  Your personal data (including everything we collect in this campaign) is being used for nefarious means. Nearly 15% of the public believes we actually told someone to “sound more like Adele.”  Nearly $40 million was spent to produce “The Hurricane Heist”

All of that said, there is still beauty, mystery, and grandeur in what’s left of the fine arts.  And when you’re done with the fine arts, there’s Matador's incredible array of 2018 titles from Belle and Sebastian, Body/Head, boygenius, Car Seat Headrest, Lucy Dacus, Iceage, Interpol, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Liz Phair, Snail Mail, Kurt Vile and Yo La Tengo.  Will these records help you sort out a world gone mad? hey, they’re great, but not THAT GREAT.  Almost certainly, and that’s why your friends at Matador —a label as magnanimous as it is humble — are offering an unprecedented 25% OFF when you use the code, “terribletimes” thru December 13. Orders of $40.00 and above receive a free tote bag and take it from me, a tote bag skeptic, you’re way less likely to drop shit all over the sidewalk when you have a stylish bag.

Out Today : Body/Head - 'The Switch'

(photo : David Black)

The Wire's Stewart Smith opines that "Kim Gordon and Bill Nace's Body/Head is the most compelling project to have emerged from the ashes of Sonic Youth," ("Gordon and Nace have become increasingly interested in texture and space, creating a free psychedelic music that's attuned to the play of shadow and light"), and while we're not encouraging comparison or competition between post-SY endeavors, I think we can all agree that today is a VERY GOOD DAY for The Wire's Stewart Smith, as Body/Head's 3rd Matador album, 'The Switch' is officially available via all finer record shops and digital platforms.

(purchase / stream 'The Switch')

Pitchfork's Marc Masters calls 'The Switch', "as mesmerizing as a hypnotist’s swinging clock," ("no matter how far they stretch, their tones and rhythms always cohere...in Nace and Gordon’s hands, these unchartable sounds combine like well-defined movements in a symphony. Their guitars rhyme as if they were trading chord changes rather than thick swaths of noise,") and as much as we anticipate you'll agree with him 110% upon experiencing the album in your preferred listening environment, we also wholeheartedly encourage you to catch Body/Head on tour starting tonight at Los Angeles' Hollywood Forever Masonic Lodge.

Coming July 13 : Body/Head - The Switch

(photo : David Black)

On July 13, we're releasing the new album from BODY/HEAD, 'The Switch'. The duo of Kim Gordon and Bill Nace recorded their 2nd studio album for Matador last summer in Western Massachusetts with engineer Justin Pizzoferrato and the results are equal parts dizzying & intense. Summer & Autumn U.S. dates are listed below, with several of the shows in question already on sale.

Creative alchemy doesn’t just happen in the studio or in the practice space; so much of it is the product of solo time with one’s instrument, learning how body and wood and electronics fuse, and of subconscious processes as one lives one’s daily life—picking up the ambient noise of the world outside, listening to others’ work, talking through ideas with friends. For Kim Gordon and Bill Nace, time together these days is limited to live performances and recording, so they’ve got to bring all their magic to every encounter. Lucky for us, these are two experimental sorcerers of significant renown.

Their debut album together as Body/Head, 'Coming Apart', from 2013, was more of a rock record—heavy, emotional, cathartic, spellwork in shades of black and grey. T'he Switch' is their second studio full-length, and it finds the duo working with a more subtle palette, refining their ideas and identity. Some of it was sketched out live (if you’ve not had the fortune of seeing them in that natural environment yet, see 2016’s improvisational document 'No Waves'), but much of it happened purely in the moment. Working in the same studio and with the same producer as 'Coming Apart', here Body/Head stretch out, making spacious pieces that build shivering drones, dissonant interplay, Gordon’s manipulated vocals, and scraping, haunting textures into something that feels both delicate and dangerous. Less discrete songs than one composition broken up into thematic movements, a slow-moving narrative that requires as much attention and care from the listener as it did from everyone involved in its creation, it is a record that sticks around after it’s done playing.

This is Nace’s favorite of Gordon’s guitar work; she’s truly come into her own as a guitarist, having built up her confidence through solo shows. The way the duo work together, you’d never know they spend so much time apart; on 'The Switch', their vision and focus feel truly unified. If Coming Apart was dark magic, 'The Switch' works with light, though it never forgets that these approaches are two sides of the same coin, and that binaries—black/white, near/far, emotion/analysis, body/head—are made to be broken open, and that the truth of things is in the energy between.

Coming November 11 : Body/Head - 'No Waves'

BodyHead2016

Body/Head, the duo of Kim Gordon (CKM, Sonic Youth, Free Kitten, etc.) and Bill Nace (X.O.4, Vampire Belt, Ceylon Mange, etc.) will be releasing their new record, 'No Waves', on November 11th. The live record documents a single show (Big Ears Festival in 2014 in Knoxville, TN) from a band renowned for clearing pathways of possibility using great waves of amplification and voice.

Body/Head's debut release for Matador Records, 'Coming Apart', was arguably the heaviest record of 2013 and received with open arms and blown minds across the world. The fact that a record steeped so heavily in non-traditional structures and improvisation could touch so many people was not a surprise to anyone who had seen Body/Head in a live setting. No Waves captures that raw improvisation and harnesses the power into a listening experience of pure, unmediated intensity.

The fire of improvisation is not the fire of the elements. Body/Head deal in electricity, but they exist in the fire of improvisation. As such, they need to play live to sustain themselves. Call it the ontological necessity of a band working heavily with the flow of power (power flowing back and forth between the members of the band, flowing through band and audience, flowing through the mental and material planes, etc). 'No Waves', a document of this flow of power, offers a different side of the band they revealed on 'Coming Apart'. Yes, some of the songs cross over in undefinable ways, but the live foundation of No Waves brings all new energies to the fore. Everything reveals itself in the now.

One of the pleasures of a live record is a chance for the listener to feel the music develop and unfold from a previously known departure point. This experience is magnified with Body/Head due to the improvisatory basis of the band, which encourages new sounds and modes of communication with every show. We hear new vocal melodies developing, new attacks on strings, new clusters of intervals. It is the sound of sound evolving. Listening to No Waves, one can't help feel that despite the title of their previous record, 'Coming Apart', we're actually hearing Kim and Bill become one. Guitars and vocals flow into each as if played by a single creature. The sound of their evolution causes audiomorphic sensations. Two guitars or eight? Four hands or one? One voice or two?

The live record also plays with orientation via it's concentration on communication. Which way are you listening to it? Listen once and hear certain forms. Listen to the same part again and you may perceive new forms, like overhearing a game of telephone. With 'No Waves', Body/Head adds a document to the library of classic live records that never exhaust themselves no matter how many times they are listened to. Musicians and groups such as Albert Ayler, High Rise, Van Morrison, Rudolph Grey, Bill Evens, Swans, etc. knew the unique possibilities of a live record that invites participation from the listener. It's the beauty of a path cleared at the moment it was recorded and for every moment to come. It's Body/Head doing what they do best - making the listener smile as they participate with the band in joyous, creative time. The Élan vital never rocked so hard.
- Ben Chasny

Kim Gordon - "Murdered Out"

"Murdered Out"

Earlier this morning, NPR Music premiered "Murdered Out", the first single by Kim Gordon issued under her own name, recorded with producer Justin Raisen and Warpaint drummer Stella Mozgawa. The following are Kim's words on the subject :

Black matte spray.

When I moved back to LA I noticed more and more cars painted with black matte spray, tinted windows, blackened logos, and black wheels. This was something I had occasionally seen in the past, part of low-rider car culture. A reclaiming of a corporate symbol of American success, The Car, from an outsider’s point of view. A statement-making rejection of the shiny brand new look, the idea of a new start, the promise of power, and the freedom on the open road. Like an option on a voting ballot, "none of the above.”

“Murdered Out," as a look, is now creeping into mainstream culture as a design trend. A coffee brand. A clothing line. A nail polish color.

Black-on-black matte is the ultimate expression in digging out, getting rid of, purging the soul. Like a black hole, the supreme inward look, a culture collapsing in on itself, the outsider as an unwilling participant as the “It" look.

###

I met the uber talented Justin Raisen, the producer, offhandedly. He was working on a project with another artist and kept sending me tracks to listen to with the possibility of getting me to sing on one of them. When I learned I could make up my own lyrics, I was in. With the remaining bits of unused vocals, he started what would be "Murdered Out." Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint) plays drums, based on the trashy drums that Justin first laid down. I went back and did more vocals and guitar and we mixed it…"Murdered Out" was such a great surprise! Looking forward to our next collaboration.

Coming 12/3 : A Lower-Than-Low Priced Compilation LP Of Matador 2013 Highlights

OK, we missed Black Friday by a few days, but if that means ONE LESS TRAMPLING this holiday shopping season, it was totally worth it.  On December 3, we're releasing a limited edition, one-time pressing of a $5.99 list LP , 'It's Been A Business Doing Pleasure With You', featuring 9 songs from (most of) our 2013 releases. In addition to album tracks from Chelsea Light Moving, Majical Cloudz, Body/Head, Lee Ranaldo & The Dust, Iceage and Kurt Vile, there's a live version of Queens of the Stone Age performing "If I Had A Tail" at the 2013 iTunes Festival (Roundhouse, London),  Savages' "City's Full" from last summer's KEXP session, and Yo La Tengo performing "Before We Run" in those same KEXP studios.

We don't have any copies for mail order, sadly, but hopefully you'll find one at your favorite record store after they're done sweeping up all the broken glass, blood, etc. from Black Friday.  If you prefer, you can order a digital version of the comp. right now at the Matador Store.

Out Today : Body/Head - 'Coming Apart' double LP/CD/digital album

Pitchfork's Marc Masters has called Body/Head's 'Coming Apart', "intoxicating". Tiny Mix Tapes cites the album's "unusual synergy, exploration, and focus", while the New York Times' Ben Ratliff writes, "there are no wrong notes on 'Coming Apart'. Nor is there a possibility of any." Today, you can formulate your own opinion with the format of your choice ; the new album from the duo of Kim Gordon and Bill Nace is in stores (or in some instances, in your mailboxes), and Body/Head will kick off their global touring tonight at Brooklyn's Union Pool.

Body/Head - 'Coming Apart' streaming today at Pitchfork Advance

'Coming Apart' ; the new 2XLP/CD/digital album from Body/Head, aka Kim Gordon and Bill Nace, is streaming today at Pitchfork Advance, prior to the September 10 release date. Mojo's Stevie Chick has likened 'Coming Apart' to "70 minutes of drone, feedback amp-noise and guitar squall that swings between abstract beauty and rolling turmoil...freeform and improvisational, it's peaks are primal and powerful."  The bad news is that Stevie penned the review too late for our sticker copy ; the good news is that you'll be able to find the album in the abstract beauty bin of your local record shop (or failing that, the rolling turmoil department).   The Wire's Phil Freeman calls 'Coming Apart', "just the thing for listeners who always found Sonic Youth too timid and bound to rock convention," though we hope he and his publishers do not mind that we've edited his quote to read "...just the the thing. For listeners".
