preorder 'Cautionary Tales ; Jukebox Classiques'

'Cautionary Tales: Jukebox Classiques' is a limited-edition box set featuring Pavement’s complete catalog of 7” singles released 1989-1999. It will include 18 records total, covering music originally released on Treble Kicker, Drag City, Matador, Big Cat, and Domino. All faithfully reproduced with original artwork, plus a 24-page threaded saddle-stitched booklet and full discographical history.

'Cautionary Tales' is available exclusively through mail order and will be strictly limited to pre-orders only. The box is available to pre-order now with the window closing for good on April 22. Delivery is expected by July 12.

If that seems like a long wait, the complete collection has been made available today on streaming services. It offers a comprehensive overview of the Pavement’s career, representing every hit, non-hit, b-side, and R.E.M. tribute – at least, all the ones that anybody bothered to press to a 7” single.

Pavement - 'Crooked Rain Crooked Rain' 30th Anniversary

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the formal release of Pavement’s 2nd album, ‘Crooked Rain Crooked Rain’. While some would prefer to commemorate the occasion with long essays, ill-advised covers or a series of tribute night at City Winery (I suppose that would also entail ill-advised covers, though you could opt for originals “in-the-style of”), your friends at Matador know there’s only two ways you really wanna celebrate ; by buying the album (again) or streaming it (over and over again).

Gary Young 1953-2023

It's very hard to imagine what our lives, heck what this record label would've been like had Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg not visited a Stockton, CA recording studio run by one Gary Young. If Matador was the house that Pavement built, you can make an argument that Gary's Louder Than You was the house that built Pavement.  But maybe this isn't a great time for arguments. We were exceedingly lucky to know the amazing human, drummer, producer and solo artist Gary Young. Much love today to his family, friends and bandmates.

Pavements 1933-2022: A Pavement Museum

Stream "Slanted and Enchanted" / Purchase limited 30th Anniversary LP

Stream "Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal" / Purchase 4xLP boxset

On the occasion of its four sold-out concerts at Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre, the rock band Pavement will unveil an international museum exhibition, Pavements 1933-2022: A Pavement Museum.

With artifacts and archival material spanning the band’s 30+ year history, Pavements 1933-2022: A Pavement Museum features previously unseen imagery, artwork and ephemera, commendations and commemorations, alongside rumored relics of the band's real and imagined history (as well as exclusive merchandise and classic museum souvenirs).

The New York opening begins a global exhibition schedule that ultimately arrives as a permanent archival fixture in the band's hometown of Stockton, California.

Pavements 1933-2022: A Pavement Museum completes a circle for one of the most celebrated and deliberated bands in modern music and helps redefine a secret history performed in plain sight.

Pavement - 'Slanted & Enchanted' 30th Anniversary - splatter vinyl + 'Courting Shutdown Offers' CS bundle

(photo : Gail Butensky)

Today, we celebrate 30 years of Pavement’s debut full-length, ‘Slanted & Enchanted,’ which was first released on this day in 1992. It remains a truly monumental album – one that defined/ruined a generation and a genre, depending on who you ask.

This isn’t our first pass at the ‘Slanted & Enchanted’-anniversary-game and we’ve put decades of hard-earned wisdom to work on making this one pop.

To start: On August 12th, we’ll release a limited-edition run of the original LP on red/white/black splatter vinyl.

We’ve also manufactred a lovingly detailed replica of the cassette Pavement used to shop ‘Slanted & Enchanted’ to prospective record labels, titled ‘Courting Shutdown Offers.’ This is an early version of the finished album with a different running order and a handful of alternate track titles. Pop it in a tape deck and experience ‘S&E’ as it was first heard by the era’s taste-making industry types.

And finally, we’ll premiere season two of our Revisionist History Podcast with a conversation featuring Pavement’s Stephen Malkmus and Spiral Stairs. Speaking to host Matt Sweeney (Chavez), the pair discuss preparing for their upcoming reunion tour, dropping out of college to tour with Sonic Youth, and writing “In the Mouth a Desert” after an Earth Day spent tripping on mescaline.

Interpol - Bandcamp Friday

Interpol, who just announced a co-headlining tour alongside Spoon this summer, has added six albums and one EP from their catalog to Bandcamp today as the service waives their revenue share until midnight PT. Other forthcoming, new, and less-than-new music available today includes albums from Horsegirl, Perfume Genius, Pavement, Spoon, Belle and Sebastian, Lucy Dacus, and much, much more.

Today, you can watch a brand-new video for the Pavement B-side “Harness Your Hopes,” directed by Alex Ross Perry and starring Sophie Thatcher.

The song is drawn from the 'Spit on a Stranger' EP, which Matador will reissue as a 12” on April 8th alongside the release of 'Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal'.

A bit of background: “Harness Your Hopes” was originally released in 1999 on the CD-edition of the 'Spit on a Stranger' EP, which included the titular Terror Twilight single plus four previously unreleased tracks. Needless to say, the song’s “hit-potential” was misjudged at that time. In 2020 – for reasons that remain mysterious – “Harness Your Hopes” became something of a viral sensation on streaming services and Tiktok, ultimately clocking tens of millions of listens.

Whether you first heard it as a piece of late-’90s fans-only arcana or as the soundtrack to a stranger’s dance routine, today you can experience the song again as a miniature history of Pavement on film – splicing Thatcher into the band’s classic music videos.

  3. Roll With the Wind

For more than a decade, Matador Records has chosen to ignore the ongoing (and, as social media caught on, increasingly not-so-polite) demands of ardent Pavement fans who have pined for a deluxe reissue of the band’s much-loved fifth and final album, 'Terror Twilight'.

Some frustration is warranted. After all, we did put out comprehensive special edition sets covering every other Pavement studio album. The truth is that we were just holding out for them to play some shows again.

On April 8th, Matador will release 'Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal', an exhaustive 45-track set compiling the remastered original album, B-sides, home demos, rehearsal tapes, era-appropriate live recordings, and even the rough tracks from Pavement’s scrapped session at Sonic Youth’s Echo Canyon studio. Altogether, it features 28 unreleased tracks. Today, you can listen to the never before heard full-band track “Be The Hook”.

The 4xLP and 2xCD editions will include a book with never-before-seen photos and commentary/context from band members Mark Ibold, Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich, Spiral Stairs, and Steve West as well as producer Nigel Godrich.

The LP will restore Godrich’s suggested sequence – which foregrounds the album’s headiest songs – while the CD preserves the final track order assembled by the band.

Originally released in 1999, 'Terror Twilight' marked a departure from Pavement’s established operating methods. Which is to say that it was recorded with a big-time producer in an expensive studio. However, for all the talk of “polish” and “precision” it’s still very much a Pavement record. And a great one. Like every Pavement album that preceded it, 'Terror Twilight' thrills and confounds. Often at the same time. Twenty-two years on, the songs remain moody, strange, and eminently deserving of re-celebration.

Pavement 2022 UK/EU Dates

[caption id="attachment_36619" align="alignnone" width="537"] photo : Tarina Westlund[/caption]

Back in 2010, we advised that Pavement’s reunion tour – the band’s first round of dates since its breakup in 1999 – was “not a prelude to additional jaunts and/or a permanent reunion.”

We were wrong, though (sorry!): A decade removed from its second “final” show in Buenos Aires, Pavement will reconvene for performances in the UK and Europe during the fall of 2022. As previously announced, they will also headline ES Primavera Sound Barcelona & Porto 2022. A full itinerary and on-sale times can be found below. Tickets will be available at pavementband.com

Pavement are Mark Ibold, Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg, Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich and Steve West. Among the most beloved acts to come out of the American underground in the 1990’s, the band released five era-defining albums – 'Slanted And Enchanted' (1992), 'Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain' (1994), 'Wowee Zowee' (1995), 'Brighten The Corners' (1997) and 'Terror Twilight' (1999) – before disbanding in 1999. Pavement’s 2010 reunion saw them play four sold out shows in Central Park and top the bills of festivals worldwide including Primavera Sound, and Pitchfork.

What went down during the intervening decade? A fair amount of fantasy sports, probably. Pavement also saw a b-side, “Harness Your Hopes,” turn into an improbable algorithmic “hit” on digital platforms. The band’s catalog – previously split between Matador, Domino, Drag City, and Treble Kicker imprints – is now available worldwide from Matador.

That music remains untouchable. And eventually, we’ll surely celebrate it with an extravagant package of some sort or another – perhaps one of the band’s canonical and not-yet-reissued LPs. Who knows, though? Clearly, we’re not at the top of our game prediction-wise.
