Out Today : Spoon - 'Memory Dust'

Out digitally today, Memory Dust features three brand new Spoon recordings – the original songs “Sugar Babies” and “Silver Girl,” plus a cover of Bo Diddley’s “She’s Fine, She’s Mine.”

(stream / download 'Memory Dust')

Tomorrow, the band will kick off a run of dates that include slots supporting The Black Keys in the UK, France, and Germany. In August, they’ll be back on the road in the US touring alongside Weezer on the west coast. And in December, Spoon will visit Australia and New Zealand as guests of The War on Drugs. Find a complete rundown below.

The songs on Memory Dust aren’t b-sides. The recordings began during sessions for Spoon’s Grammy-nominated album, Lucifer on the Sofa, but were left unfinished. Following the record’s release and at the tail end of a year-plus of intense touring, the band came back to the sketches with renewed energy and fresh perspective. The completed tracks retain a touch of Lucifer’s character – rock ’n roll music, played in real-time – but stretch out hypnotically.

2. She’s Fine, She’s Mine

Matador Revisionist History Podcast Episode 8: Spoon's Britt Daniel and Interpol's Paul Banks

Stream The Matador Revisionist History Podcast

Stream / Purchase Limited White LP of Spoon's 'Kill The Moonlight'

Stream Interpol's 'The Black EP'

Our core philosophy here at Matador Revisionist History HQ is “What you want, once we’re ready.” And this time, we’re really living up to that.

Last summer, we celebrated the 20th anniversaries of Interpol’s Turn on the Bright Lights and Spoon’s Kill the Moonlight – two career-defining records that were released on the very same day in August of 2002.

Around that time, front men Paul Banks and Britt Daniel huddled with our host Matt Sweeney and taped an episode of the RH podcast. Seven months later, we’re finally prepared for you to hear it.

Everybody on this episode goes way, way back: Sweeney met Daniel during Spoon’s first tour. He met Banks when Turn on the Bright Lights was released, which is around the time Banks initially met Daniel. They reminisce about NYC’s Luna Lounge, Paul explains the importance of yelling in an Interpol song, and Britt stakes his claim to the cowboy hat from the “Wild” video.

Spoon - The Devil & Mister Jones (Adrian Sherwood Reconstruction)

Stream "The Devil & Mister Jones" (Adrian Sherwood Reconstruction)

Pre-order Lucifer on the Moon

Purchase / Stream Lucifer on the Sofa

Out Friday, Lucifer on the Moon is the anti-gravity companion to Spoon’s Lucifer on the Sofa. It’s a full-on reimagination of the Austin band's tenth album created by On-U Sound founder and UK dub icon, Adrian Sherwood.

Today, listen to “The Devil and Mr. Jones” (Rework), which twists the original song down to a head-spinning, half-time groove.

Moon flips Lucifer on the Sofa’s rhythm tracks inside-out, and often rebuilds them wholesale. Sherwood supplied extensive additional instrumentation via On-U’s extended family of session players, including bassist Doug Wimbish and drummer Keith LeBlanc (both of whom performed in Sugarhill Records’ early ’80s in-house rhythm section). He dug deep into the album’s multi-tracks, surfacing forgotten details and elements not present in the final album mixes. The result airlifts Spoon’s trademark melodies into lush alien terrain, replete with vibrant echo and rumbling low-end.

Coming November 4 : Spoon vs. On-U Sound - 'Lucifer On The Moon'

Spoon - photo by Olivia Wolfe

Adrian Sherwood - photo by Harry Borden

"On The Radio" (Adrian Sherwood Reconstruction
directed by Britt Daniel

'Lucifer on the Moon' is the anti-gravity companion to Spoon’s 'Lucifer on the Sofa'. A top-to-bottom rework of the Austin band's tenth album, it was created by On-U Sound founder and UK dub icon, Adrian Sherwood.

The album will be released November 4th on LP and digital.

'Moon' first took shape as a few heady remixes for the singles from 'Lucifer on the Sofa'. Frontman Britt Daniel offered Sherwood two suggestions: “Avoid things that would not be possible on tape” and “Add whatever you want to add, the less modern the better.” The collaboration shouldn't come as a surprise: dub-inspired production is wound through Spoon’s classic tracks, from "Finer Feelings" to "Inside Out."  The initial results pleased both parties and Sherwood was invited to work on additional songs. And then a few more. “I got into the melody and the thoughts it evoked in me,” the producer explains. “It just evolved and we eventually found ourselves with a whole album.”

'Moon' flips 'Lucifer on the Sofa'’s rhythm tracks inside-out, and often rebuilds them wholesale.

“It wasn’t just a thing where you pick apart this and that and you stay on the grid and you add a delay,” explains Daniel. “He added so much more instrumentation to the tracks that they became completely different versions of the songs. Not just remixes, but companion pieces. A ‘Part II.’”

Coming September 9 : Spoon - 'Kill The Moonlight' 20th Anniversary White Vinyl Edition

"The Way We Get By" (directed by Steve Hanft)

Here’s one of those videos where I'm still trying to figure out what’s going on. I remember we worked on a shot of me making a suggestive handoff of a seemingly nefarious package, and some espionage-like loose story that was to be bookended by a little performance done on the sidewalk without a permit. Shot in a few hours in Chinatown during a 19-day van tour where we had no days off, the package handoff sequence had to be removed from the edit because MTV deemed it too indicative of a drug deal. I’m not sure what happened to the rest of the story but this thing holds up pretty well. The video was directed by Steve Hanft who had among other things, and this is the truth, years earlier directed a movie I had never heard of called "Kill The Moonlight". I thought I'd discovered that phrase in an early 19th century futurist manifesto. And well, I had. But so had he. Picture me trying to explain that to him on set when he thought our album referenced his movie. Steve had also shot the video for Beck’s song "Loser" and Beck put an album out one month after ours which had a song on it called "Paper Tiger", as did 'Kill The Moonlight'. That’s some universe type shit
. - Britt Daniel

On September 9 we're releasing a special white vinyl edition to mark the 20th anniversary of Spoon's landmark 4th album 'Kill The Moonlight', originally released by Merge in North America and 12XU in Europe. Considered by many to amongst the band's finest works, we're not likely to make more additional white vinyl copies of 'Kill The Moonlight' until the 40th anniversary rolls around, so preorder yours while you have a chance.

Spoon - "My Babe" Video, Adrian Sherwood Reconstruction

Today, you can watch the video for “My Babe.” It’s 'Lucifer On The Sofa''s  anthemic centerpiece – a genuine love song shot through with tenderness, optimism, and a touch of self-aware bravado.

The “My Babe” video takes inspiration from a short-lived late ’70s variety show hosted by the legendary country music producer and oddball poet, “Cowboy” Jack Clement. The clip is directed by Jamie-James Medina and stars Brad Leland ("Friday Night Lights"). On streaming services the song is backed with a reconstruction by dub pioneer Adrian Sherwood (above, photo by Harry Borden).
