Tonight In Brooklyn : The Young at Union Pool

Just a reminder that THE YOUNG will be making their first East Coast appearance in eons tonight at Union Pool, playing alongside the formidable Endless Boogie and V.B.A.  Tickets are available here, we're told there's a special on Shiner Bock, and provided you don't ask me if I've heard the new Lana Del Rey album, you might get out of the room without a shiner.

(sorry, I didn't get much sleep last night).

The Young's 3rd album, 'Chrome Cactus' is out August 26 and is available for preorder here.

Yo La Tengo On KLRU's "Overheard With Evan Smith"

During a recent visit to Austin, TX while performing the live score to Sam Green's "The Love Song Of R. Buckminster Fuller", Yo La Tengo's Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley visited the studios of KLRU for an extended chat with "Overheard" host Evan Smith.  In terms of prestige, this is considerably more exciting than a booking on the Bethanny Frankel show.  In terms of loud audience participation and distasteful bullying, it ranks somewhere below Wally George's "Hot Seat".     You stream the interview here.

This Sunday Yoko Ono's Plastic Ono Band (featuring Yo La Tengo) are performing at Glastonbury festival, the second collaboration between Yo La Tengo and Yoko Ono's Plastic Ono Band.

The first show took place at New York's Union Pool last Tuesday (image above) and the next takes place on this Sunday at 6pm on The Park Stage.  People of the UK can watch it in the flesh (wellies recommended), live via the BBC and shortly after we’ll have an online link for those of you living in a country with a better World Cup team (aka - the rest of the world) than England (i.e. - not Spain).

Mabon "Teenie" Hodges, RIP

Memphis guitar genius and songwriter Teenie Hodges, the Hi Rhythm Section linchpin whose accompaniment of artists including, but not limited to Al Green, Ann Peebles, Otis Clay, Syl Johnson and our own Chan Marshall are just a portion of his legacy, passed away Sunday at the age of 68. Our thoughts this morning are with the family, friends and musical collaborators

A summer meal from Ottolenghi's Jerusalem

Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi's Jerusalem is my kind of cookbook - documenting a food culture centered around a particular region and history, omitting all foams tweezers sous-viding and modernism, and including beautiful photography.

This meal was inspired by eGullet user Soba70's recent explorations of this book.

First I made filfel chuma (also known as pilpelshuma), a Libyan Jewish hot sauce. (May I point out that Ottolenghi's instruction to "soak the ancho chile in boiling water for 30 minutes" is very unclear - it could mean that you should pour boiling water over the chile and let it sit off the heat for 30 mins, or it could mean boil the chile for 30 minutes. It means the former.)

See here for Soba's step-by-step instructions. Taking a visual cue from him, I cut down the quantities of cayenne and sweet paprika by about half. I also left the caraway seeds whole and halved the quantity of garlic per his recommendation. It's a crazy-great sweet and bitter relish, somewhat like harissa, but drier:

I then made Palestinian fried tomatoes with garlic, again taking Soba's lead - cooking the crushed garlic cloves, and subbing filfel chuma for the fresh chile. I had to fry in batches with a fairly large skillet - you really need your largest sauté pan for this. Perfect summer dish, and I was even able to find worthy heirlooms at Eataly (since USGM is closed on Sundays):

Finally, the well-known chicken with caramelized onion and cardamom. This really is a perfect dish. I got it better this time than the first time - maybe better chicken, but also high-quality Ceylonese cinnamon from The Spice House, which I'm now certain is the right kind of cinnamon for this dish:

'SEEK WARMER CLIMES' OUT TODAY

Today Lower's debut album 'Seek Warmer Climes' is out everywhere (Escho in Denmark, Big Love in Japan and Matador covering the other corners). The band recently wrapped up a tour in the US and are now in the UK playing shows with Fucked Up tonight and tomorrow. The New York times caught the band in New York and called them "a post-punk band in early metamorphosis, luxuriating in unease," and describes their songs as "strong, stirring and ready" and "gnarled and fortressed."

Coming September 9 : Interpol - El Pintor

On September 9, we'll be releasing INTERPOL's first new album in 4 years, 'El Pintor' on LP, compact disc and all digital formats in North, Central and South America (Soft Limit will be handling the rest of the world). Recorded at Electric Lady Studios and Atomic Sound in New York City with engineer James Brown, the band's fifth album - taut and epic in equal measure - finds Interpol recharged, and ready to reclaim their mantle as one of the planet's best. ‘El Pintor’'s songs (track listing below) were written and produced by Interpol, with Daniel Kessler playing guitar & piano, Samuel Fogarino on drums, and Paul Banks on vocals, guitars, and taking over bass duties for the first time. The album also features contributions from The Secret Machines' Brandon Curtis (keyboards), Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. (Beck, Air) playing keyboards on “Tidal Wave,” and Rob Moose (Bon Iver) playing violin and viola on "Twice as Hard.” ‘El Pintor’ was mixed by Alan Moulder at Assault and Battery Studios, and mastered by Greg Calbi.

(making of 'El Pintor' clip directed by Adam Levite)

'El Pintor' track listing :

1. All the Rage Back Home
2. My Desire
3. Anywhere
4. Same Town, New Story
5. My Blue Supreme
6. Everything is Wrong
7. Breaker 1
8. Ancient Ways
9. Tidal Wave
10. Twice as Hard

Interpol will be touring all summer, with festival performances including Governors Ball (this weekend), Lollapalooza, FYF Fest, Austin City Limits Festival, Glastonbury, and Roskilde already confirmed. They'll be back on the road this fall with more dates to be announced soon.

Coming August 26 : The Young - 'Chrome Cactus'

"I had the idea for 'Chrome Cactus' almost immediately after completing 'Dub Egg'. It was just a title for a long time, but it hung around for a while. 3 quarters of the way through 2012 we started playing with a new bass player, we tried out a new tuning, we jammed tons of new songs; rolled tape in our home studio on material that we also tried out in a live setting during a month-long residency in early 2013. I demoed songs on my own, shared them with the group - cut stuff, questioned everything and left plenty behind. All along the thematic foundation hovered around the idea of becoming something or someone else; like snapping to reality to realize you're not only in the midst of total shit and chaos but you're in some strangers skin; looking through their eyes and maybe you catch a distorted, barbed reflection of yourself and remember someone you thought you were. " - Hans Zimmerman

(l-r : Ryan Maloney, Kyle Edwards, Lucas Wedow, Hans Zimmerman.  photo by Autumn Sparado)

On August 26, we'll be releasing the 3rd album from Austin TX quartet THE YOUNG, 'Chrome Cactus'. Simply put, their followup to 2012's 'Dub Egg' is nothing short of a monster of a guitar album, but one that's always in service to the band's vastly improved songcraft. Here's the first song from side one, "Metal Flake" :

1. Metal Flake
2. Cry of Tin
3. Chrome Jamb
4. Moondog First Quarter
5. Apaches Throat
6. Mercy
7. Ramona Cruz
8. Dressed in Black
9. Slow Death
10. Blow The Scum Away
When we last heard from Austin, Texas' The Young, the quartet was livin' free and their album 'Dub Egg' was the sunshine-fuzz hit of the year in more enlightened households worldwide. Flash forward two years and it seems the bill is due, in a big way as 'Chrome Cactus' is a far darker version of The Young. The breezy optimism of their earlier albums has been switched out for sinister, creeping dread in both lyrics and music, and the instrumentation is far sharper as well. The rhythm section of drummer Ryan Maloney and new bassist Lucas Wedow lay down a heavy (though nimble where they need to be) foundation for the already formidable guitar interplay of Hans Zimmerman and Kyle Edwards. Finding two guitarists with a penchant for such skillful, intuitive interplay is tough enough, but 'Chrome Cactus' is the moment where Zimmerman's vocal delivery & way around a tune has caught up with The Young's instrumental prowess.

Expertly produced by fellow sonic assassin Tim Green (Nation of Ulysses, The Fucking Champs, Thee Evolution Revolution etc.) at the new Louder studios located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Grass Valley CA, 'Chrome Cactus' aurally denies the idyllic setting that it was recorded in. From the undeniable riff of album opener "Metal Flake" to the squalls of feedback in "Blow The Scum Away" that end the record, you'll be hard pressed to find an album that both reinforces and revitalizes everything that is great about American Rock Music in 2014. Taking influence from a myriad of artists such as (early) ZZ Top, Dead Moon, Link Wray, Lungfish and pedal-stompers worldwide,'Chrome Cactus'is a huge ball of power and controlled feedback disguised as ten of the catchiest songs you'll hear this or any other year.

(If you're still getting a handle on where these guys are coming from on the musical map, they've helpfully assembled a mixtape via Soundcloud)

In the days ahead, we'll be announcing Autumn U.S. dates for The Young, though they'll be playing Brooklyn's Union Pool on June 27 ; there's more details to follow about the bill and ticketing.
