SAVAGES CURATED FESTIVALS: SONIC CITY + LE GUESS WHO?

That's right folks. As if they haven't given you enough already, Savages will also bring to you two undoubtedly phenomenal line-ups for this year's Sonic City Festival and Le Guess Who? Festival.

The first of these, Sonic City, will take place in Kortrijk in Belgium on 12th and 13th of November 2016. Last year saw the festival curated by the Canadian group formerly known as Viet Cong (now Preoccupations) which featured bands such as The Thurston Moore Band, Bo Ningen and Protomartyr, amongst others. Savages will no doubt bring another impressive line-up – which is yet to be announced. Early bird tickets have already sold out. More info below.
Le Guess Who? takes place in the quaint town of Utrecht in the Netherlands during the same weekend 10th - 13th November 2016. Savages are one of four curators for this festival alongside Wilco, Julia Holter and SUUNS. You can see the first announcement of artists in the poster below. More to be announced.

Riding a crest of worldwide critical acclaim, Car Seat Headrest's 'Teens Of Denial' was deemed BBC6's 'Album Of The Day' earlier Tuesday, but as you've probably noticed, THE DAY IS ALMOST OVER. As the old saying goes, those who ignore the future are condemned to drink the Pabst, but the Matablog (recent) nostalgia fest continues with a fond look back at those glorious moments on the evening of May 23, 2016 when Car Seat Headrest's show at Washington DC's 9:30 Club was made available online via the auspices of NPR. The show will be archived for the next two weeks.

There's No Denying Car Seat Headrest's 'Teens Of Denial' Is Out Today (On Some Formats, But Not All)

Alright, after last week's highly publicized drama concerning THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS of LP's and CD's being destroyed, we are very proud to announce that today, Friday, May 20 marks the official (digital) release of Car Seat Headrest's hotly anticipated 'Teens Of Denial'. Stereogum's Tom Breihan calls it, "a sprawling concept album about what it’s like to be young and empty," ("a powerful, cutting, incisive portrait of an entire generation that’s been economically fucked by previous generations’ greed"), while Pitchfork's Jeremy Gordon testifies that TOD represents, "a firm declaration of talent", calling Will Toledo, "an incredibly imaginative, insightful singer-songwriter."  We're no experts on the law (for instance, check that business about our destroying thousands upon thousands of LP's and CD's), but I'm pretty sure Tom and Jeremy wouldn't be allowed to write these things if they weren't 100% accurate.

In all seriousness, 'Teens Of Denial' is available today via digital download or thru your favorite streaming service. The amended and 100% LEGAL double LP and CD can be preordered via the link below. In addition, there's some new tour dates which are highlighted in B-O-L-D.

Saturday, May 21 – Rough Trade, Brooklyn NY (SOLD OUT)
Monday, May 23 – Black Cat, Washington DC

An Announcement Regarding Car Seat Headrest's 'Teens Of Denial'

(Dear Friends,

We were so inspired by Radiohead and Beyoncé’s recent success with surprise albums outta-the-blue that we decided to do the REVERSE with Car Seat Headrest’s hotly anticipated ‘Teens Of Denial’ ; instead, we’re pulling the LP and CD versions from circulation on the eve of the album’s release.

OK, sorry, that's actually not what's going on. The real story is a little more complicated. We’d love to blame it on someone else, but for once, we can’t. Please read Will Toledo's comments below. Thanks - Gerard)

=/\=/\=TEENS OF DENIAL MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT=\/=\/=

Life happens and sometimes not in ideal ways. If you’ve heard anything about the new album, then you’re probably aware that one of its songs made use of The Cars song “Just What I Needed”. Now, obviously, when we called the record ‘done’ and sent it off to be printed, we were working in full confidence that we had the legal side of it all worked out. We found out last week that this was not the case. I’m not going to get into the nitty-gritty of email chains and invested parties; suffice it to say that Matador (and I) were neither pulling a Banksy nor operating in ignorance of the law, but that we truly believed we had the issue resolved months ago, until last week.

As you may have heard, vinyl is being pulled from stores right now. There’s a total recall out, and all copies with the original version of the song will be destroyed. Nevertheless, Teens of Denial WILL COME OUT ON MAY 20TH, at least digitally. I spent the last 48 hours working on an alternate cut of the track, which is now called “Not What I Needed”. It’s not merely an edit - it is its own thing, about half a minute longer than the original track, and goes in a much different direction. Honestly, despite the apparent clusterfuck, I had fun doing it, and I think it’s a stronger song now. In any case I’ve grown up accustomed to working on an album right up to its drop date, so this is not a freak-out scenario for me. The album is going to come out on time and it’s going to be good.

The physical release will not come out on time, obviously. We’ll likely see a street date of sometime in July. I’m very sorry to everyone who was anticipating a preorder (it does sound GREAT on vinyl). It will be in your hands eventually. But it was very important to me that we keep the digital release for May. We’ve all been waiting long enough. Most of my music only exists online anyways, so it makes sense that this album should start the same way.

Thanks for your continued support, and I am very excited for this fucking record to come out already.

Official Statement from Matador Records :

The release date for the Car Seat Headrest album “Teens Of Denial” has been pushed back from May 20 to later in the summer due to a recall of physical product, so that a song containing elements of a composition by Ric Ocasek could be removed and replaced. Matador had negotiated for al icense in good faith months ago, only to be told last week that the publisher involved was not authorized to complete the license in the United States, and that Ric Ocasek preferred that his work not be included in the song. Matador regrets that it was not informed of this much earlier, and has made changes to respect Mr. Ocasek’s wishes.

VIDEO : Steve Gunn - "Ancient Jules"

"Ancient Jules" (directed by Claes Nordwall)

“Initially an instrumental guitarist, Gunn has really come into his own as a full-band-backed singer, more assured in his soft and leathery tenor. . . Gunn's found a kindred guitarist in James Elkington; the two toss off a thicket of Richard Lloyd/Tom Verlaine-style interplay that turns into a rigorous workout as ‘Ancient Jules’ folds in feedback, countermelodies and a solo that burns like a cigarette hanging just off the lip.” - Lars Gotrich, NPR Music

"Steve Gunn is one of the best guitarists of his generation. Period." - Richard Metzger, Dangerous MInds

The second video from Steve Gunn's first album for Matador, 'Eyes On The Lines' (June 3) premiered earlier today at Dangerous Minds in the form of the Claes Nordwall-directed "Ancient Jules". When a motorcycle excursion on the English countryside goes awry, Steve is rescued by another certifiable non-slouch in guitar history, the one and only Michael Chapman. Nordwall's cameras are welcomed into Chapman's home and aside from the obvious (ie. you don't get this kind of service from AAA), it's pretty awesome to watch these two fantastic players/songwriters in a casual (ALBEIT HEAVILY STAGED) setting. The 'Ancient Jules' digital EP is also out today and includes two non-album bonus tracks, “The Handshake” and “The Soloist.” Check it out at Spotify or Apple Music.

Steve Gunn & The Outliners – Nathan Bowles (drums), James Elkington (guitar, lap steel), and Jason Meagher (bass) -- head to Europe next week to begin a two-month tour in support of Eyes On The Lines. Their debut show in North America is June 9th at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. All dates are below.
