Coming 12/3 : A Lower-Than-Low Priced Compilation LP Of Matador 2013 Highlights

OK, we missed Black Friday by a few days, but if that means ONE LESS TRAMPLING this holiday shopping season, it was totally worth it.  On December 3, we're releasing a limited edition, one-time pressing of a $5.99 list LP , 'It's Been A Business Doing Pleasure With You', featuring 9 songs from (most of) our 2013 releases. In addition to album tracks from Chelsea Light Moving, Majical Cloudz, Body/Head, Lee Ranaldo & The Dust, Iceage and Kurt Vile, there's a live version of Queens of the Stone Age performing "If I Had A Tail" at the 2013 iTunes Festival (Roundhouse, London),  Savages' "City's Full" from last summer's KEXP session, and Yo La Tengo performing "Before We Run" in those same KEXP studios.

We don't have any copies for mail order, sadly, but hopefully you'll find one at your favorite record store after they're done sweeping up all the broken glass, blood, etc. from Black Friday.  If you prefer, you can order a digital version of the comp. right now at the Matador Store.

Coming November 29 : Queens of the Stone Age - '...Like Clockwork' (Black On Black Edition)

A week from Friday, a limited edition, black vinyl / black artwork 2XLP edition of Queens of the Stone Age's album-of-2013 candidate '...Like Clockwork' will be available in stores.  There's only 1200 of these in the USA, with another 1200 earmarked for the rest of the planet.  So get up early.

Out Today : Yo La Tengo - 'Fade' Deluxe Edition 2XCD

Just a reminder (we've had a few of those today) that Yo La Tengo's 'Fade'  has been reconfigured as a double CD (see above) deluxe edition,  and is in stores today or available direct from the Matador Store.  Here's the scoop on the contents from a September post.

"Super Kiwi" - (MP3, 192K)

Iceage - expanded digital version of 'You're Nothing', Available Today

One of 2013's best albums just got the BONUS treatment ; Iceage's 'You're Nothing' has been expanded in digital form to include 3 additional tracks, "To The Comrades" (Bahumutsi Drama Group), "Jackie" (Sinead O'Connor) and the previously unreleased "A-Rifle". You can order it today via iTunes, or opt for the "To The Comrades" b/w "Jackie" import 7".

Kurt VIle - 'It's A Big World Out There (And I Am Scared)' EP and 'Waking On A Pretty Daze (Deluxe Haze)' 2XCD Out Today

OK, brace yourselves for a succession of Matablog posts this morning, either heralding titles out today, out a week from Friday or out the Tuesday following. We probably should've spaced this out a little more carefully, but we realize we're competing with new video game consoles, Furbys, Cabbage Patch Graven-Idols and the like this Holiday season so there's NO TIME FOR SUBTLETY.

The new Kurt Vile & The Violators 12" EP, 'It's A Big World Out There (And I Am Scared)' is out today, and the entire EP is available as a bonus CD inside the just released 'Wakin On A Pretty Daze (Deluxe Haze)' double CD(shown above). Kurt, who appears on tonight's episode of "The Best Show On WFMU", graciously provided us with the following liner notes :

delayed ep liner notes for the digi-generation:

Never Run Away (string synth):
this version was the original first single which appeared prior to official album release (only before available in the music vid)
all the tracks are different than the LP version save the drums and acoustic (vocals, electric guitar, synth = all new)
when the album came out a lot of people were askin where the synth version went, so... for the fans!

NRA Reprises:
zoned out arp synth/sequencer experiments. felt good goin down, feels great comin back. like space pop to my ears.
oh yeah, and the chords are the chorus to "never run away" that was no accident...
kv: arp odyssey synth. rob laakso: killer analog sequencer programming. vince nudo: perfect pounding drums.

Feel My Pain:
one of my favorite dark folk tunes from aways back, recorded early on in the "wakin" sessions.
we tried adding a lot of stuff to this but ended up leaving it raw because it felt the realest to me stripped down and pure.

Snowflakes Extended:
this is the full version of "snowflakes are dancing" with all the lyrics.
we faded the song out after the third verse on the LP just for the purpose of flow (one too many long songs)
but i'm proud of all the lyrics -one line of which contains the ep's title- so i just had to bring it back...

Wedding Budz:
original blueprint of the song "air bud" recorded by violator rob laakso in an all night duo session with kv.
it's all about the about the guitars and bass (drum machine and synth not too shabby neither)
crank in headphones and you'll see what we mean B-)

The Ghost of Freddie Roach:
lost epic solo kv session with john agnello in philly
john brought the drum machine and played the percussion.
kv did the rest: vox, some keys, guitars (and epic slide guitar!)

Listen to Majical Cloudz' "Savage"

Composed around the same time that Devon Welsh wrote Impersonator, "Savage" has been an integral part of Majical Cloudz' live show for quite some time.

In regards to "Savage", Devon Welsh of Majical Cloudz notes "I think it's important to explain a song a little bit, but not too much. The song is written about a specific set of circumstances and experiences, and Matt and I did such-and-such when we recorded it, but ultimately what the song is 'about' is less important than how and why it is meaningful for you when you listen to it. Explaining too much about the details of the song is not the point, so I won't. "Savage" is about a friendship, it's mysteries and it's moments of excitement, and the way drugs played into all of it. It's about letting go of a relationship as it changes and the emotions that go along with that."

"Savage" is the first new material the duo has released following the release of Impersonator earlier this year.

Kurt Vile To Appear On The Next-To-Next-To-Next-To-Next-To Last Episode Of "The Best Show On WFMU"

"Lonestar Statesman" - photo by Aaron Sainz

How does a fellow follow being named one of GQ Magazine's Men Of The Year? I don't know how Daniel Craig, Tom Brady or Justin Timberlake might answer that question, but if you're KURT VILE the answer is so blatantly obvious I can't believe you didn't see it coming from the goddamn headline above. Next Tuesday night, November 19 at 9pm eastern, Kurt will be be a guest on WFMU's "The Best Show On WFMU", as host Tom Scharpling enters his final month of toiling for free weekly programs for the station. It's hardly Kurt's first appearance on "The Best Show", but given the respective trajectories of their careers ---- Kurt entering an orbit only occupied by the entertainment world's biggest stars, Tom preparing for a transition his handlers say might make him "the next Pat O'Brien" --- this could be the final time these two icons are in the same room.

Or maybe they do something similar in a few months. Either way, you won't want to miss it.
