VIDEO : EMA - "3Jane"

On Tuesday, Dazed & Confused premiered the latest video from EMA's 'The Future's Void', the Y2K-directed "3Jane". D&C called it "creepy"...BUT THEY MEANT IT IN A GOOD WAY.

"In this video I am alone in a guilded paradise with another bleach blonde creation. Our physical resemblence is uncanny but not exact. Our relationship is undefined. Does she protect me or mock me? Is she my jailer or my servant? What does she desire?"- Erika M. Anderson

"Somewhere between the prediction of a fully realized human-android and the watchful eye of surveillance technology, lies a conception of the reality we intended to create in “3Jane”. Depicted therein are the dichotomies between the persona of the artist and her branded image, the human and the automata, the watched and the watcher, the real versus the ideal, and the merger of these dualities. Presented is a dream-like narrative scenario that touches on the inevitable union of humanity and technology." - Y2K

Coming In January : LP Reissues Of Chavez' 'Ride The Fader' & 'Gone Glimmering'

(photo : Jesse Peretz)

Here at Matador Records and Filmworks, we've long lived by the credo established by our founder, Chris Lombardi, who once declared, "give the people what they want. Especially if it's easily accomplished and/or lucrative for us." And with that in mind, we have listened to the pleas and threats of YOU, the music fans still devoted to paying for physical goods, and can finally announce that after 12 long years in the out-of-print wilderness, we're reissuing both of Chavez' Matador albums on vinyl on January 20, 2015

("Break Up Your Band", from 'Gone Glimmering', directed by Scott Marshall)

“It’s not like we’re out to desconstruct rock, but when we started the band, we had an agreement that we wouldn’t play anything that sounded like something we’d heard before.” – MATT SWEENEY (speaking to Billboard in 1996)

“For me, Chavez was this perfect creative beast. We had all these annoyingly strong ideas about what we wanted to do, and we did them. We did them exactly.”
– CLAY TARVER (speaking to The New York Times Magazine in 2011)

("Unreal Is Here", from 'Ride The Fader', directed by Clay Tarver and Scott Marshall)

The quartet of Tarver, Sweeney and crack rhythm section James Lo and Scott Masciarelli never quite broke up --- they just take many years inbetween gigs (and many more years making us wait for a third album). But there's an awful lot to be said for leaving a flawless recorded legacy behind, and 1995's 'Gone Glimmering' and 1996's 'Ride The Fader' are unbeatable slabs of thinking-person's loud rock from an era where such sounds were not in short supply. To say both albums have grown in stature and influence years after their release would not be an exaggeration, but that's precisely why we're taking brutal advantage of the situation at this very moment.

"Turned Out A Punk" - A New Podcast From Fucked Up's Damian Abraham

listen to ‘Episode 1 - Martin Mills

As you're probably aware, podcasts have become the go-to medium for tastemakers and cultural observers including but not limited to Adam Carolla, Louie Anderson and former WWE announcer Jim Ross.  Throwing his hat into the ring this week is Fucked Up's Damian Abraham with the debut of "Turned Out A Punk", a weekly series in which he'll be chatting with iconic characters from different corners of the entertainment world about how punk impacted them and vice versa.  Episode #1 features a conversation with our dear friend & tireless supporter, Beggars Group founder and chairman Martin Mills.   If you're thinking this would've been the perfect time to ask Martin, "if Gary Numan and Mark E. Smith were both drowning and you could only save one, who would you choose?", that's why Damian's doing a proper podcast and you're sitting around coming up with unhelpful ideas.  Leave this stuff to the professionals!

Iceage and Lower in documentary "13 Torches for a Burn"

Earlier this year in Los Angeles, Iceage, Lower and many cohorts from their native Copenhagen convened for the 13 Torches for a Burn festival. The energy was combustible, so the LA Fire Department shut it down. Or so we thought...

Jacqueline Castel's short film "13 Torches for a Burn" tells another story. The film, premiered b Nowness this weekend, is a gorgeous transplanted scene report, bands sharing a collective musical story far from home:

Plowing Into The Field of Love by Iceage and Seek Warmer Climes by Lower are both available now.

Iceage were on Revolt TV last week and they were spectacular:

Celebrate Matador's 105th Anniversary WIth A 102 Song Playlist At Spotify

It may have escaped your attention earlier this week, what with all the column inches afforded Taylor Swift's decision to remove music from Spotify, that the last remaining American who witnessed the formation of Matador Records had either passed away or disabled their Facebook account.  With this historic occasion in mind, we've assembled a 102 song Matador playlist at Spotify that will either have you partying like it's 1889 or perhaps will provoke a huge outcry over all songs that are missing (for instance, Taylor Swift's earliest works for Matador). Write down your favorite omissions, and we'll try to get 'em cleared in time for our 110th Anniversary!
