The MataBlog is edited by Matador Records’ co-moaner Gerard Cosloy and individual entries are the work of whoever’s name is next to them. If you enjoyed something in the MataBlog, thank you very much! If there was something you found particularly troubling, please be advised that a) maybe you should read it again and b) the contents of this blog do not necessarily represent the opinions of Matador Records, Beggars Group, the combined staff of either company, nor the Matador artist roster. Opinions are like friends — hardly anyone has one worth listening to.

Singles Going Home Alone Update : A) Our Subscription Series Is Totally Awesome, B) Why Haven't You Signed Up Yet?

OK, it seems we've been remiss in keeping you up to date with what's happening with year #2 of our SIngles Going Home Alone subscription 7" series. As you might recall, 2012's edition brought limited edition, colored vinyl 7"'s from Stephen Malkmus & The Jinks / LA Guns (split), OBN III's, The Men, Wounded Lion, Jesu and Kurt Vile / Meg Baird (another split)...plus a bonus 7" from the long, lost Boston/Tampa trio Primitive Romance.

At risk of patting ourselves on the back so hard we might end up in traction, we're feeling like 2013's lineup to date is even heavier. And when you consider 13 singles weigh almost twice as much as 7, that's no hollow boast. To recap, here's what's come out to date, along with what's coming soon :

January - Jeffrey Novak - " I Never Knew I Knew So Much b/w "B-7"

February - Superchunk - "I Hate History" b/w " Glue" (SS Decontrol)

March - Cian Nugent & The Cosmos - "Hire Purchase (Part I) " b/w "Hire Purchase (Part II)"

April - Outer Spaces - "I Was Divided " b/w "Eternally Fifteen"

June - Royal Headache - "Stand And Stare" b/w "Give It All To Me"

July - Bits Of Shit - " Rider" / "Lazy Cowgirls" / "Total Recall"

August- Lower Plenty / Dick Diver - "At The Very Top" b/w "Altona"

September - Smartboys - "A Different World" b/w "Sacked"

October - Tony Molina - 6 Track EP

Along with a 7" from Coho Lips before year's end, we'll have another 2 singles (plus a bonus surprise) to announce soon. In the meantime, THERE ARE STILL A FEW COPIES OF THESE REMAINING. If you missed out at the start of the year, you can still subscribe and get all of 2013's 7"'s so far, plus everything that's coming between now and December 31st. Ok?   THANKING YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR PATIENCE (AND YOUR MONEY) .

Kurt Vile - "Freeway", Live At Philadelphia City Hall

(video courtesy Bob Sweeney)

Shortly after receiving the greatest honor a Philadelphia citizen can be bestowed short of the Wingbowl Trophy, Kurt Vile performed for a City Hall audience (above). Thanks again to all who attended.

Happy Kurt Vile Day!

As previously noted, today is officially Kurt Vile Day in Philadelphia, thanks to the great work of the City of Philadelphia Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, who know sweet rock action (and upstanding citizenship, as exemplified by Mr. Vile) when they see/hear it. The City of Philadelphia is celebrating Kurt Vile Day by presenting Kurt with the Liberty Bell, the City's highest highest honor, and he will be playing a free concert in the City Hall Courtyard today at 5:30pm to mark the occasion.

The above poster was designed by Steve Powers in connection with the Philadelphia Poster Guild. For those of you in Philadelphia, limited edition prints will be signed by ESPO and given away today at the event. First come first served!

And here's a Q&A with Kurt in conjunction with KV Day on Philadelphia Magazine's site:

Queens of the Stone Age - Barclays Center, Brooklyn, December 14

("I Sat By The Ocean", live at the Wiltern Theater, Los Angeles, May 24)

Queens of the Stone Age will headline Brooklyn's Barclays Center on Saturday, December 14. There's a presale starting tomorrow (Wednesday, August 28) at 10am eastern - the code is OCEAN.

In the event you missed Josh Homme being interviewed by Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot on WEBZ's "Sound Opinions" a couple of weeks ago, here's another chance to hear it.

Kurt Vile Covers Nine Inch Nails On Eve Of Kurt Vile Day

I'm a sucker for The AV Club's "Undercover" series -- you may have seen Yo La Tengo cover The Supremes, Ceremony cover Violent Femmes, Sloan cover Gary Numan, or Ted Leo cover Tears For Fears -- but this could be the one you were waiting for.

Here's Kurt Vile, with Rob Laakso on syntetisaattori, polkimet, and rumpukone, doing Nine Inch Nails's "Down In It":

Kurt Vile covers Nine Inch Nails

And don't forget, tomorrow, by mayoral decree, is Kurt Vile Day in Philadelphia; Kurt will be performing in City Hall Courtyard and receiving the Liberty Bell Award.

Additionally, Under The Radar's John Everhart spoke with Stuart and Stevie about each track, and their reminiscing and rambling is going up in parts today, tomorrow, and Friday at Under The Radar. Part one:

SECRETS AND LIES WITH STUART AND STEVIE AT UNDER THE RADAR MAGAZINE

" 'Your Secrets' was from 1994. It was about meeting up in the afternoon to talk about German philosophers. There wasn't much else to do back then."

A Note and A New Song From Glasser

The last public show Glasser played was February of last year. Since then, she’s been locked away in a studio working on her follow-up to 2010?s Ring. She’s playing her first show since then this weekend at LA’s FYF Fest. She’s decided to use the occasion to release her first new music in a while. The song is called “Shape”, it’s a very powerful song, and we can honestly say that it’s one of the best pieces of music that’s ever come out under the True Panther imprint. More Glasser very soon…in the meantime enjoy the music and this note from her.
I have been thinking a lot about space. Not only outer space and physical boundaries, but also inner mental space. There are so many beginnings and endings and edges and shores inside and outside our minds. Some are impossible to scale and they make us feel small. I feel small and far removed at times, and I push myself farther away in a kind of compulsion. These are physical comforts I cling to, but always when I cling to them I realize that the isolation I’m afraid of is in my heart and not on a crowded sidewalk. I also have moments of ecstasy, milestones that drive me forward in search of more. These emotions and sensations elude me though, they seem to exist in their own seperate planes. I still chase them. I can become so mesmerized by something outside myself, a person or place that I try to reflect its power and the way it makes me feel.

This is why I feel so lucky to be able to make art, especially music. My experiences flow together and become the stuff of invention. I spent the last year and a half making my new album, which will come out in October. I thought about architecture, a physical imposition in my life, and the fluid emotional boundaries of relationships, also sometimes imposed.

More news to come, in the meantime, enjoy “SHAPE”

Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme on "Sound Opinions"

While in Chicago a couple of weeks ago for Lollapalooza, Queens of The Stone Age's Josh Homme sat down with "Sound Opinions' Greg Kot and Jim DeRogatis for a wide ranging chat ; we're not sure how so many other major media outlets spaced on the Medieval Times story, but their loss is your gain.  You can hear the full interview here, or if you prefer, tonight at 8pm central on WBEZ (or via any of the affiliate stations carrying the program).

Queens of the Stone Age continue their touring on behalf of album-of-the-century candidate '...Like Clockwork' with a show at Los Angeles' Gibson Amphitheater tomorrow night (Saturday, August 17).

Yo La Tengo on WFUV Tonight (9pm EDT)

You might have thought, given the wealth of amazing Yo La Tengo radio sessions that we've alerted you to in this space, that the well had finally run dry and there would be no more new radio action from Ira, Georgia and James. You would, as you probably have guessed by now, have been completely wrong. The above video is from a recent session the band did at New York's WFUV, which can be listened to in its entirety here . New Yorkers with a hankering to listen on their radio dial should tune in to 90.7FM at 9PM EDT tonight.

Coming October 8 : Lee Ranaldo & The Dust - 'Last Night On Earth' LP/CD/digital album

photograph by John Von Pamer

“A solo record works best when you feel like you’re opening a window into somebody’s life, experiencing the things they’re going through or thinking about, places they’re seeing, through their eyes. At its best, you find a universality in it.”

– Lee Ranaldo

On October 8 (October 7 in the UK and Europe), Matador will be releasing 'Last Night On Earth',  the album from Sonic Youth founding member Lee Ranaldo and The Dust (drummer Steve Shelley, guitarist Alan Licht and bassist Tim Lüntzel). A more intense, expansive work than 2012's 'Between The Times & The Tides',  'Last Night'  -- while certainly darker in tone & lyrical content than its immediate predecessor, is the sort of dizzying electric guitar clinic that ranks amongst the best from any era.  After an exhaustive stretch of domestic and international touring (with more to come --- see below) Lee & The Dust have formed a powerhouse unit, and we're confident the results of these Echo Canyon West sessions will impress & inspire for months to come, if not far longer.  Here's an initial sample in the album's "Lecce, Leaving" :

(below : Lee discusses the album with WNYC "Soundcheck"'s John Schaefer)
