An Apology from Sandbag to Buy Early Get Now customers
Following on from last week's blog post, we have finally resolved the problem on the delay of orders with Sandbag getting orders of the Fucked Up BEGN 7"s out to UK and European customers. A message we received today from Sandbag follows.
Once again, we've sorry for this and are making changes to make sure this can't happen again.
Sandbag is nearly 10 years old as a company and has been very fortunate to be involved with very many excellent projects. These projects have ranged from enabling Oxfam and the Make Poverty History coalition to raise awareness and millions of pounds to help those that really need it, through to ethically manufacturing merchandise for the likes of Adele and The xx. For several years now, Sandbag has helped the Buy Now Get Early team deliver some amazing music around the world.
We have hundreds of thousands of customers every year and we do our utmost to look after each and every one in the manner that has established our reputation as a company that looks after the fans.
Unfortunately, in rare instances, things sometimes go wrong. Prophetically, something did go wrong with the Buy Early Get Now – Fucked Up campaign.
Very simply, human error led to many customers not receiving the products that they had paid for. We have now shipped these orders and apologise for the delay in Buy Early Get Now customers getting their music.

Apricot salad redux - with braised pork
As a followup to last week's post about Thai salads, here is a variation on that apricot salad - this time with braised slivered pork and mint. Although not shown in this photo, the salad contains crispy dried shrimp as well.
Any pork will do, but a fattier or more cartilaginous cut will work best. Blanch from a cold water start (salt the water), change the water if you like, bring to a boil again and braise - and be sure to remove when still slightly pink.

UPDATE: Thurston Moore has sadly had to cancel his KEXP session today.
At 8:00PM EDT/5:00PM PDT, Fucked Up will play a live set on Seattle's KEXP before taking the stage at the Capitol Hill Block Party. The set can be heard at 90.3 on Seattleites' FM dials, and at KEXP.org for the web-savvy.
Tomorrow, Ted Leo And The Pharmacists will be bringing the noise to WXPN's XPoNentional Music Festival in the lovely (and incredibly hot) city of Philadelphia. Their 5:15PM EDT/2:15PM PDT set will be broadcast on XPN for those of you unfortunate enough not to experience it live. Tune in (hopefully from somewhere with lower temperatures and/or air-conditioning) at 88.5FM in Philly, or at XPN.org.
UK/EU - Fucked Up "Buy Early Get Now" order update
It has now been several weeks since we released the latest, greatest Fucked Up album David Comes To Life, but for some of you in Europe who bought the "Buy Early Get Now" option we know you're still waiting for your bonus 7"s to reach you, which we're really very sorry about.
There's different factors which have affected the delivery time of these reaching you, a later than expected shipping from the US manufacturer to our European distributor (Sandbag) meant we were a few days off missing the June 28th release date, which was followed by an internal error at Sandbag where they mistakenly shipped out one of the 7"s individually, followed by the rest of the (three) 7"s in another shipment. We've been told by Sandbag that all orders have now shipped (on July 13th/14th) but that before they can claim the items were lost in the post (by Royal Mail) they have to allow 7 days.
This means: your records have been posted and should be on their way to you, hopefully you'll be enjoying them right now.
But, if you still haven't received your packages by tomorrow you can get in touch with Sandbag directly ([email protected]) to pass on your details so they can make a claim with Royal Mail. Some people on the Fucked Up Facebook group are reporting that they have started to receive their records, so they are (slowly) getting out there.
We're very sorry for all the hassle this has caused and are looking to put it right in every way we can.

Girls "Vomit" MP3 + Tour Dates

On September 13th, 2011, San Francisco’s Girls will release their second album Father, Son, Holy Ghost on True Panther. Two years after their debut (Album), and one year after the follow-up EP (Broken Dreams Club) it is the natural third entry in Girls’ recorded trinity, and features their most accomplished recordings to date. Both previous releases demonstrated that behind the noise of a back story loud enough to swallow most bands, stood two true rock craftsmen and traditionalists, who convey their own intimate, unique, and troubled visions.
For Father, Son, Holy Ghost Christopher Owens and JR White holed up in a basement recording studio located in San Francisco’s downtown Tenderloin district and "Vomit" is the first offering from those sessions. The juxtaposition of pain and beauty - hope and misery - which lie at the heart of classic rock and gospel music, are at the core of the song and the album.
Christopher shares his own thoughts: "I wrote vomit before Girls was even a band or an idea, this is one of the first songs I ever wrote along with 'Substance' and 'Headache' what you're hearing in "Vomit" is someone who is at life's lowest, seeing the light, and becoming a songwriter."

Thai summer salads
It's not that these salads are meant to be eaten in summer, it's just that they are best and easiest in the summer in New York - and of course are appropriate for the temperature.
Apricots are in season here right now, and I happened to have some, so I threw together the salad above tonight. Deep-fry the dried-shrimp till crispy (about 15 seconds), then drain and dry on paper towels. It's essential to have good dried shrimp. These ones come from the Phillipines.
Toss the apricot slices with some salt and let sit for 5 minutes. Sprinkle on the dried shrimp and some chopped fresh mint leaves. The dressing should be composed of 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 cup fish sauce, 2 tbs palm sugar and 1/4 cup granulated sugar, heated gently until the dry ingredients are dissolved, then the mixture cooled, and finally mixed with 1/2 cup fresh lime juice (just before serving). Obviously cut down the amounts for the size of the salad - I made one-fourth the amount of the dressing recipe for the salad shown above. That said, "Thai salads are not so much dressed as anointed liberally" - David Thompson.
For variations on this theme, braise a bunch of cartilaginous pork and then sliver and scatter over the salad. Substitute fresh shrimp for dried - boil it briefly. Or get large shrimp and butterfly and grill them.
The best known Thai salad is som tumm, or green papaya salad. It comes from Isan in the northeast of Thailand (New Yorkers should check out the excellent new Isan restaurant Zabb Elee in the East Village) and shares similarities with the cuisine of nearby Laos. The above shot of the ingredients is misleading in some respects. The apple eggplant was destined for a curry, not the salad. And you really should use snake beans (also known as yard beans) for the salad, not regular Western green beans, though the latter will do in a pinch.
You prepare som tumm in a Lao mortar and pestle, which unlike the solid granite Thai version (used for pounding curry pastes) is made of clay and wood. The salad ingredients are gently mashed together, starting with garlic and Thai chiles and then moving on to snake beans, dried shrimp, palm sugar, lime juice, cherry tomatoes, fish sauce and the green (unripe) papaya. You can julienne the latter with a mandoline or benriner, or do it the old-fashioned way, holding the papaya in your left hand and rapidly hitting the peeled surface with your knife until the surface is scored with parallel cuts, then shave the pieces off, the repeat.
This som tumm recipe mainly comes from Kasma Loha-unchit's invaluable thaifoodandtravel site, with some substitutions based on David Thompson. But the accompaniment is pure Thompson - sweet crispy pork. This is a two-day preparation and involves pork neck with palm sugar, Indonesian sweet soy sauce (kecap manis), oyster sauce, salt and star anise. The pork is marinated in the syrup and then dried overnight, and finally, deep-fried:
The combination of the chewy, sticky pork with the crisp textures and tangy flavors of the som tumm is intoxicating.

July 26 marks the 5th anniversary of the Matablog's public debut (after MONTHS of beta-testing), truly a day in that will go down in rock / internet history as the moment blogging finally came to fruition as
Though I realize many of you would like to credit me alone for the Matablog's wild success (and I thank each of you for the cards, letters and fruit baskets that arrived today, especially the videogram from former NY Gov. Elliot Spitzer) it couldn't have happened without the hard work, insight, and passion for THE TRUTH the Matador and Beggars staffs bring to the table, nor without the contributions from our family of recording artists. It is my fervent hope that in the days to come, the Matablog will continue to serve as a beacon of light in the otherwise dreary world of rock biz puffery. Frankly, I'd settle for Todd Netter not referring to it as "Mata-blog", but perhaps that's something we can target after the 10th anniversary.
Anyhow, enough with all of that insider-baseball bullshit. There's no point celebrating a big anniversary without a party, and this weekend Matador has Thurston Moore, Cold Cave and Kurt Vile all appearing at our Matablog 5th Anniversary Bash in Chicago's Union Park. I realize there's a bunch of non-Matador artists on the bill ; there might even be banners atop the stages that fail to mention the actual name of the festival, but that's ok. Not every record label blog is magnanimous enough to share their weekend in the sun with others, but after all this time you oughta know that we're all about inclusion. Here's to five (hundred) more years!

In which our dashing hero Thurston Moore presents a hypnotic music video for the menstruation-themed "Circulation", from his solo album Demolished Thoughts, which The AV Club called "an album of deeply psychedelic unplugged love songs...abstract poetry that eventually congeals into a sticky hash-ball of searching, sexuality, and sadness."($5 now at Amazon!)
Of the video, Thurston sez: "Circulation, the 2nd video from Demolished Thoughts (after the dream cloud love + war visuals of “Benediction” by the mysterious, elusive director Josef Marie) - was inspired by the free-spirit poet/artist girls of Northampton Massachusetts who would explode and levitate into expressionistic transcendence whenever cool records would spin by local DJs Bill Nace, Jake Meghinsky and, when asked (rarely) - T Moore hisself. After being entranced and inspired by this ritualistic love energy it was decided by TM and Rose Mackey, one of the leading lights of this wild heart gang, to combine forces.
