Coming June 17: Perfume Genius - "Ugly Season"

Pre-order / Pre-save Ugly Season

Purchase / Stream Set My Heart On Fire Immediately

Today, Perfume Genius announces the release of his new album, Ugly Season out on June 17. To coincide with the release of the album, Perfume Genius (Mike Hadreas) has teamed with renowned visual artist Jacolby Satterwhite for a short film featuring Hadreas and the music of Ugly Season. Satterwhite is known for his immersive multidisciplinary technique that fuses live video, 3-D animation, drawing and print-making. Satterwhite’s work has appeared at MoMA, The Smithsonian, The Whitney and the Studio Museum of Harlem.

"This project is the genesis of a whole new direction that I’m taking, one that I’ve been thinking about within this endemic culture, since 2020,” says Satterwhite. “Mike and I are both writing scripts. My visual narrative serendipitously mirrors the lyrical direction in his music; it’s a rare, like-minded bond. It’s a creation myth. How do you architecturally mold and render an idealized version of utopia? It’s about making something that you desire so beyond your scope that it’s hard to grapple into a concrete form.”

The music of Ugly Season was written as the accompaniment to Perfume Genius and choreographer Kate Wallich’s immersive dance piece, The Sun Still Burns Here. The work was commissioned by the Seattle Theatre Group and Mass MoCA and was performed via residencies in Seattle, Minneapolis, New York City and Boston throughout 2019. During this time, Perfume Genius publicly shared two of the dance project’s compositions - “Pop Song” and “Eye in the Wall.” The album was produced by Perfume Genius and producer and long-time collaborator Blake Mills and was created in collaboration with Hadreas’ long-time partner Alan Wyffels.

Pavement - "Harness Your Hopes" Video / 'Spit On A Stranger' EP Coming April 8

"Harness Your Hopes"
directed by Alex Ross Perry

(presave / preorder 'Spit On A Stranger' EP)

Today, you can watch a brand-new video for the Pavement B-side “Harness Your Hopes,” directed by Alex Ross Perry and starring Sophie Thatcher.

The song is drawn from the 'Spit on a Stranger' EP, which Matador will reissue as a 12” on April 8th alongside the release of 'Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal'.

A bit of background: “Harness Your Hopes” was originally released in 1999 on the CD-edition of the 'Spit on a Stranger' EP, which included the titular Terror Twilight single plus four previously unreleased tracks. Needless to say, the song’s “hit-potential” was misjudged at that time. In 2020 – for reasons that remain mysterious – “Harness Your Hopes” became something of a viral sensation on streaming services and Tiktok, ultimately clocking tens of millions of listens.

Whether you first heard it as a piece of late-’90s fans-only arcana or as the soundtrack to a stranger’s dance routine, today you can experience the song again as a miniature history of Pavement on film – splicing Thatcher into the band’s classic music videos.

Spit on a Stranger EP Tracklist

  1. Spit on a Stranger

  2. Harness Your Hopes

  3. Roll With the Wind

  4. The Porpoise and the Hand Grenade

  5. Rooftop Gambler

  6. Harness Your Hopes (Live Brixton Academy, 1999)

Belle and Sebastian have released a new song and video piece "If They’re Shooting At You" in support of those affected by the situation in Ukraine. The visual collage is a collaboration with photographers covering the conflict in Ukraine highlighting the situation on the ground whilst offering a message of solidarity and hope.

When the situation in Ukraine first started to happen it became clear that the lives of the people there, and probably ‘ours’ too,  were never going to be the same. The band had just started rolling out tracks for our new album, and it all felt a bit silly to be honest.

We had one track called ‘If They’re Shooting At You’, it’s a song about being lost, broken and under threat of violence. The key line is ‘if they’re shooting at you kid you must be doing something right.’

We stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and hope that their pain and suffering can be brought to a halt as soon as possible.

We got in touch with various photographers and creatives in Ukraine and they generously said that we could put their pictures to music. In creating this we aspire to show a hopeful, defiant side, as well as bringing an awareness to the plight of the people there.

We think any way in which we can get behind Ukraine - politically, culturally, practically, spiritually - it must all add up in the end. Together we have to do what it takes to help Ukraine beat this tyranny.

Please consider giving to the Disasters Emergency Committee, The Red Cross, or any other humanitarian charity involved in the crisis.

If you choose to donate to the Red Cross, please visit here redcross.org.uk/ukraine. They are part of the joint appeal with the DEC until March 18th, and money donated before then will be matched by the UK government.  - Stuart Murdoch

"If They’re Shooting At You" is a co-production between Belle and Sebastian, Shawn Everett and Brian McNeill. It features a choir fronted by Anjolee Williams. The video collage was compiled by Marisa Privitera Murdoch.

Coming June 3 - Horsegirl - 'Versions Of Modern Performance'

"Anti-glory" - directed by Erin Vassilopoulos

(stream/download "Anti-glory")
(presave/preorder 'Versions Of Modern Performance')

Horsegirl are best friends. You don’t have to talk to the trio for more than five minutes to feel the warmth and strength of their bond, which crackles through every second of their debut full-length, 'Versions of Modern Performance'. Penelope Lowenstein (guitar, vocals), Nora Cheng (guitar, vocals), and Gigi Reece (drums) do everything collectively, from songwriting to trading vocal duties and swapping instruments to sound and visual art design. “We made [this album] knowing so fully what we were trying to do,” the band says. “We would never pursue something if one person wasn’t feeling good about it. But also, if someone thought something was good, chances are we all thought it was good.”

It’s not just their intra-band friendship that sustains them, either. Reece and Cheng are college freshmen, and Lowenstein a high school senior. They learned to play—and met—through the significant network of Chicago youth arts programs, and they have their own mini-rock underground, complete with zine distros, that they describe as somewhat separate from the “adult shows” that take place at bars and DIY spaces they don’t have access to. They’re exultant about their friends’ talent, noting that any of the bands from that scene could have been (or might still be!) plucked up the way they were. (You can see some of those friends in the sweetly goofy self-produced video for single “Billy;” their scene takes pride in doing their own visual art, both film and album covers.)

'Versions of Modern Performance' was recorded with John Agnello (Kurt Vile, The Breeders, Dinosaur Jr.) at Electrical Audio. “It’s our debut bare-bones album in a Chicago institution with a producer who we feel like really respected what we were trying to do,” the band says. Horsegirl expertly play with texture, shape, and shade across the record, showcasing their fondness for improvisation and experimentation. Opener “Anti-glory” is elastic and bright, while the guitars in instrumental interlude “Bog Bog 1” smear across the song’s canvas like watercolors. “Dirtbag Transformation (Still Dirty)” and “World of Pots and Pans” have rough, blown-out pop charm. “The Fall of Horsegirl” is all sharp edges and dark corners.

One can certainly hear elements of the ‘80s and ‘90s independent music the group loves so deeply and sincerely in their music—the scuzzy melodicism of what used to be called “college rock,” the cool, bubbly space-age sheen of the ‘90s vamps on lounge and noir; the warm, noisy roar of shoegaze; the economical hooks and rhythms of post-punk. There’s even a bit of no wave mixed in for good measure. But as Horsegirl fuses all of this together, it feels not like a pastiche or a hacky retread but something as playful and unique as its predecessors. They’re best understood as part of a continuum, but they’re building something for themselves.

“I think we had conceived of the album as a DIY thing, thinking about playing it live to other kids,” the band says. “In David Byrne’s book, he talks about [how] people write for the space that they think they’re going to—you write it to be played somewhere specific. I think we were thinking of our trio arrangement and being in a lot of basements, not knowing we would have all of these resources to record at Electrical Audio. And so when we went to make the record, it was very important to us to not be too polished.”

With lyrics intentionally impressionistic and open-ended, and a sound that ranges with joy and enthusiasm across a range of styles, knitting them together in fascinating ways, 'Versions of Modern Performance' offers many pathways. It’s a record to get lost in, a record to soundtrack reflective time alone, and a record to put on if you just feel like dancing with your friends around the kitchen.

Belle and Sebastian have announced a new album 'A Bit Of Previous', coming May 6th.  The album's first single, “Unnecessary Drama” premieres today (video above).

“The song is about a young person experimenting in being a human again after a forced hiatus”, says frontman Stuart Murdoch. “The person is weighing up whether or not it’s worth the mess! Still, you dip your toe in and it becomes delicious, and you get too much of it. Between trouble and nothing, we still choose the trouble."

'A Bit of Previous' is the 9th studio album by Belle and Sebastian and their first full-length in seven years. This may be surprising to anyone following the recent life pursuits of the Glasgow 7-piece: a trilogy of EP’s; a soundtrack for the directorial debut of The Inbetweeners’ Simon Bird; The Boaty Weekender – a 3000 capacity star-studded four-day music festival on a cruise liner sailing the Mediterranean; a live album showcasing the band’s present-day iteration as savvy main stage entertainers; and in 2020 a collaborative project with fans called ‘Protecting The Hive’. But in all these idiosyncratic endeavours, as intrinsic to the band’s DNA as the stage invasion at the end of each of their shows, a full-length has eluded us.

'A Bit Of Previous' is a classic Belle and Sebastian album preoccupied with songs and melodies that won’t leave your head and lyrics that can make you smile and ponder and sometimes be melancholic. It’s an album self-produced and recorded by Belle and Sebastian (with contributions from Brian McNeil, Matt Wiggins, Kevin Burleigh and Shawn Everett) and their most hands-on since 'The Boy With The Arab Strap'.

In some respects, 'A Bit Of Previous' is also a first. It’s the first album the band recorded in their native Glasgow in 20 years (the last being 2000’s 'Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant'). What started off as a pandemic necessity – having to ditch plans to record in California in spring of 2019 – became a refreshing change of pace. Unbeholden to restrictive and expensive studio schedules, it allowed for long walks through the streets and parks of Glasgow and spontaneous train journeys to nearby towns which embedded proceedings with a peculiar sense of place. The band upgraded their practice space to a makeshift studio, making some creative interior design choices to keep it pandemic safe.

'A Bit of Previous' is Belle and Sebastian taking on age and getting older and emerging all the more vital for it. "Young And Stupid" is a stuttering acoustic rocker that without its lilting violin might be mistaken for a T. Rex song, the lyrics and nonchalant vocals facing the passage of time with wry ennui: “Now we’re old with creaking bones / Some with partners some alone  / Some with kids and some with dogs  / Getting through the nightly slog / Everything is fine when you’re young and stupid  / Everything’s divine when you’re young and stupid”. "Come On Home", with its fireside piano and conversational exchanges between Murdoch and Martin, evokes a handing over of the generational baton with a call to “Give a chance to the old / Set the record straight on the welfare state / Give a chance to the young / Everyone deserves a life in the sun”.

While the arrangements are often playful, there is an underlying gravity. The deceptively feelgood, choir backed "If They’re Shooting At You" reads like a poignant ode to defiance and survival: ‘If they’re shooting at you kid / You must be doing something right”. On Martin’s "Reclaim The Night", a jaunty backbeat tells of a cross-generational everywoman trepidation that in 2022 is more pertinent than ever.

'A Bit of Previous' is also scattered with big, occasionally delirious pop moments. "Unnecessary Drama" rips through a cacophony of overdriven riffs and a droning harmonica that borders on the unhinged and is one of the band’s heaviest outings since, well, ever. The 140+ bpm "Talk To Me Talk To Me" is ablaze with euro synths and keyboard horns as the voices of Murdoch and Martin intertwine on a breathless chorus. "Working Boy in New York City" exists in a parallel universe where the band did in fact make it to California – such is the escapist bliss of its sloping flute and bittersweet funk.

On the other side of the spectrum are some of Belle and Sebastian’s most moving ballads. Tender finger-picked paean to a lover "Do It For Your Country" and doo-wop-inflicted "Sea Of Sorrow" showcase Murdoch’s tenor at its most bare and affecting, while Stevie Jackson contributes lovelorn country waltz "Deathbed of My Dreams".

So what is a 'A Bit of Previous'? It’s a bit of everything, and a lot of what makes Belle and Sebastian so special and enduring. It’s a band tackling the insight, experience and responsibility that come with getting older with humour and irreverence and lyrical exactitude and musical bravado. It’s one of the UK’s most beloved pop portraitists asserting themselves as an infallible source of energy and fun.

There’s a touch of Buddhism, too. A practice increasingly influential on Murdoch’s outlook in recent years and given a further manifestation via his popular weekly guided online meditation sessions, a sense of empathy and compassion is present on each song. The album title, meanwhile, is possibly a reference to the concept of reincarnation. As Murdoch notes in the liner notes: “There is a firmly held belief in Buddhism that we have been reborn so many times and in so many guises that if we look around us, we are bound to see a person who has been our mother in a past life. And we are surrounded by people who have been our children. If we truly had that in our minds and in our hearts, we would drop the prejudice we had: our attitude to strangers and difficult people would alter emphatically.”

'A Bit Of Previous' is available in four different artwork covers across LP, CD and digital. The Matador / Belle and Sebastian webstore edition  of the LP includes a bonus 7" with standalone track "A Bit Of Previous."

The band have also confirmed  a spring-summer US tour. Full dates can be found below, alongside rescheduled UK and European tour dates for 2022 and 2023.
