Coming July 29 : Yo La Tengo - 'I Can Hear The Heart Beating as One' 25th Anniversary Edition

photo : Rafael Fuchs

stream / purchase 'I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One' 25th Anniversary Edition

Today, Yo La Tengo’s undeniable classic 1997 album 'I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One' is a quarter of a century old. To celebrate, a digital deluxe version of the album is released today offering a smorgasbord of extras: the band’s 1997 Peel Session featuring live takes of “Autumn Sweater,” “Shadows,” and a 9-minute pass through “I Heard You Looking,” as well as remixes of “Autumn Sweater” by µ-Ziq, Kevin Shields, and members of Tortoise, many of which have not previously been made available for streaming. “I remember that I wanted it sounding pretty organic, which is why I recorded it to a cassette and pitched it about a bit,” recalls µ-Ziq’s Mike Paradinas. “It really is all over the place.”

Best of all: Matador’s archivists have unearthed a director’s cut of the “Sugarcube” video, directed by Phil Morrison and starring David Cross  and Bob Odenkirk, creators of the legendary comedy sketch series, "Mr. Show", which adds 30 seconds of never-before-seen footage. “I had the greatest time making this! Mr. Show reunion, of course, and a great song and scenario,” says Odenkirk. “We improvised these hard-rock clowns, perhaps my greatest work in ‘clowning,’ and would love to revisit and really dig deep on who these two were – hair-metal go-getters!”

photo : Lisa Johnson

"Sugarcube" - directed by Phil Morrison

“It was fun! (Pretty rare for a music video.) And such a good group of people making it for pretty much nothing, including David Doernberg, Joe Ventura, Nicole Whitaker, James Whitaker, Michael Mees, Leesa Evans, Damon Chesse, Amy Silver, Elena Balshem, Matt Chesse, Bill Ryan, Dennis Callaci (and maybe Allen Callaci and Chris Jones), and many more. The school sweatshirts were made by the legendary The Wizard, on Sunset near The Roxy and The Rainbow.”

On the physical end of things, the record will be made available in a limited 25th anniversary edition on translucent yellow vinyl on July 29 (US/CA) & Aug 12 (ROW). Also available will be a reproduction of the video’s “President McKinley Academy of Rock” sweatshirts

Pavement - 'Slanted & Enchanted' 30th Anniversary - splatter vinyl + 'Courting Shutdown Offers' CS bundle

(photo : Gail Butensky)

Today, we celebrate 30 years of Pavement’s debut full-length, ‘Slanted & Enchanted,’ which was first released on this day in 1992. It remains a truly monumental album – one that defined/ruined a generation and a genre, depending on who you ask.

This isn’t our first pass at the ‘Slanted & Enchanted’-anniversary-game and we’ve put decades of hard-earned wisdom to work on making this one pop.

To start: On August 12th, we’ll release a limited-edition run of the original LP on red/white/black splatter vinyl.

We’ve also manufactred a lovingly detailed replica of the cassette Pavement used to shop ‘Slanted & Enchanted’ to prospective record labels, titled ‘Courting Shutdown Offers.’ This is an early version of the finished album with a different running order and a handful of alternate track titles. Pop it in a tape deck and experience ‘S&E’ as it was first heard by the era’s taste-making industry types.

And finally, we’ll premiere season two of our Revisionist History Podcast with a conversation featuring Pavement’s Stephen Malkmus and Spiral Stairs. Speaking to host Matt Sweeney (Chavez), the pair discuss preparing for their upcoming reunion tour, dropping out of college to tour with Sonic Youth, and writing “In the Mouth a Desert” after an Earth Day spent tripping on mescaline.

Full tracklist, upcoming Mdou Moctar tour dates, and information on each artist provided by producer/bassist Mikey Coltun is below.

Download / Stream Afrique Refait

Purchase / Stream Afrique Victime

Afrique Refait tracklist:

  1. Chismiten (Jay Mitta Remix) – Tanzania

  2. Taliat (Rey Sapienz Remix) ft MC Dougis – Congo

  3. Ya Habibti (Tommy T Remix) – Ethiopia

  4. Tala Tannam (Debmaster Remix) ft MC Yallah – Kenya/Uganda

  5. Untitled (Duma Remix) – Kenya

  6. Asdikte Akal (Yugen Blakrok Remix) ft Kanif The Jhatmaster – South Africa

  7. Layla (Aya Metwalli Remix) – Egypt

  8. Afrique Victime (Kabeaushé Remix) – Kenya

  9. Bismilahi Atagah (Chrisman Remix) – Congo

  10. Chismiten (DJ Diaki Rhythm Remix) – Mali

  12. Chismiten (DJ Diaki Guitar Remix) – Mali

  13. Chismiten (DJ Diaki Vocal Remix) – Mali

(Mdou Moctar, photo credit: Jamie Kelter Davis)

Jay Mitta (above) who remixed ‘Chismiten’ is one of the pioneers of the Singeli scene in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Like most of the artists picked for these remixes, he is pushing the boundaries of folk music beyond what it started as to something new and untried while remaining true to his roots. When the Nyege Nyege Tapes mixtape came out it was powerful and we got in touch with the label and asked about Jay doing a remix.

Tommy T who remixed ‘Ya Habibti’ is a producer from Ethiopia who lives in DC and I knew from growing up in the DC music scene. We thought he’d do something different from the other remixers and he took a more traditional approach.

MC Yallah is one of my favourite MC/rappers right now. Here she is paired with producer Debmaster to create a powerful in your face remix of the love ballad ‘Tala Tannam.'

Duma is the duo of Lord Spike Heart and Sam Karugu from the grindcore scene in Kenya. It’s some of the most interesting and sonically innovative music coming out of Africa: noise and grindcore with a mix of Kenyan roots and Ugandan music. Their video for (2020 single) ‘Lions Blood’ was super powerful and in your face, and we wanted to work with them.

Yugen Blakrok (photo credit: David Hasse) was recommended to me through a friend I met in Mali years back from South Africa. I was told ‘Yugen is an MC, but she works with great producers and would be amazing!’ This is one of my favorites in the series!

Aya Metwalli who remixed ‘Layla’ is originally from Egypt and is now part of the Lebanese noise scene that should definitely be checked out by more people. There’s an amazing experimental and noise scene in Egypt, Lebanon, Tunisia, Palestine. I got to know Aya Metwalli through people in the Beirut noise community where they’re a small but tight-knit and collaborative scene. We knew she would kill it on this remix.”

DJ Diaki (photo credit: Sophie Garcia) is one of the pioneers of Balani music scene in Mali. Balani is a house party that started in the capital Bamako and moved to the outskirts. They bring a soundsystem and blast music loud and people dance, going back to traditional Malian folk parties. I attended one of these parties in Mali in 2012 and was sent some Balani music on my cellphone. There’s a great shop in Bamako called Mali Retro that originally sold cassettes. Nowadays you tell them what you want and they throw it on a flash disc. In 2016 I was given a combination of traditional Balani phone music and newer electronic stuff. The four remixes of ‘Afrique Victime’ focus on different elements of the song separately: bass, guitar, guitar II and vocals.

(Rey Sapienz, photo credit: Sophie Garcia)

(Chrisman, photo credit: Marvin Twesigye)

(Kebeaushé, photo credit: Mo Kanchu)

Rey Sapienz, MC Dougis, Kabeaushe and Chrisman are all artists I was previously unaware of before working on this project. These artists were presented by the amazing Nyege Nyege Tapes label and were all essential in completing the Afrique Victime Remix project. While a lot of the artists previously chosen came from either East, West or North Africa, Rey Sapienz, MC Dougis and Chrisman showcase all the cool shit coming out of Central Africa – The Congo.

Mdou Moctar’s ‘Afrique Victime’ was one of 2021’s most lauded releases: an innovative alchemy of Tuareg folk, blues and rock, electric guitar pyrotechnics, field recordings and electronics with poetic call-to-arms lyrics about the plight of his homeland of Niger.

Today, in line with their activity supporting and bringing attention to African artists, Moctar Moctar announce ‘Afrique Refait’, a remix collection of songs from ‘Afrique Victime’, released April 19th on Matador. The tracklist features sound-makers at the vanguard of electronic music in Africa, with a view of highlighting different scenes across the continent. Many of the artists are associated with pioneering Ugandan label Nyege Nyege Tapes who were vital to the making of the project.

Moctar’s UK tour culminates tonight with a sold-out show at EartH. Before proceeding to further European and festival dates throughout spring and summer.

Interpol - "Something Changed"

Last week, Interpol premiered “Toni”, the first single from their new album ‘The Other Side Of Make-Believe’, released July 15th on Matador. The song was accompanied by the opening instalment of a two-part film directed by Van Alpert.

Today, Interpol release the second and concluding part, as well as unveil new song "Something Changed".Singer Paul Banks says: “In ‘Something Changed,’ part two of our short film with Van Alpert, reality and reverie converge and our two lead characters find themselves in a kind of dream state - being pursued inexorably by an ominous figure (played by myself.) The lives of the three are intertwined in a nebula of fear, retribution, desire, and defiance. Who will receive their just deserts? Stay tuned and find out.”

Director Van Alpert: “Paul and I like the idea that 'Something Changed' would be like a dream. It’s as if our two main characters wake up from what happened in ‘Toni’ and their lives are irreparably different. They are now on the run from some dark force that is a bit more primal and encroaching.”

Coming July 15 : Interpol - 'The Other Side of Make-Believe'

"Toni" - directed by Van Alpert

“Still in shape, my methods refined,” sings Paul Banks on "Toni", the opening track and lead single from Interpol’s 7th LP 'The Other Side of Make-Believe'. The album breaks fresh ground for the group: parallel to exploring the sinister undercurrents of contemporary life, Interpol’s new songs are imbued with pastoral longing and newfound grace. Daniel Kessler's serpentine guitar arrangements crest skywards, Samuel Fogarino shatters his percussive precision into strange metres, while Paul Banks’ sonorous voice exudes a vulnerability that is likely to catch most long-term fans of the band off guard. After all, says Banks, “there’s always a seventh time for a first impression.”

'The Other Side of Make-Believe' began remotely across 2020. In early 2021, Interpol reconvened to flesh out new material at a rented home in the Catskills, before completing it later that year in North London, working for the first time with production veteran Flood (Mark Ellis), as well as teaming up again with former co-producer Alan Moulder.

If fate didn’t quite ordain the circumstances for Interpol’s seventh album, it was at least fortunate that the band had happily concluded their Marauder cycle on stage in front of 30 thousand-odd Peruvian fans. Rather than be sent scrambling like so many other musicians, when the first lockdown clamped Interpol had no new release to promote and no tour to rearrange. They quickly got into a productive mood.

Writing on their own in those geographically-dispersed early stages gave the members a way out of their respective heads: “We really extracted the honey out of this situation”, says Fogarino. Kessler echoes the sentiment: “Working alone was raw at first, but has opened up a vivid new chapter for us.” In the Interpol Venn Diagram, each member found a way of expanding their individual circle in perfect harmony.

As Banks was grounded in Edinburgh for close to nine months, he got cosy in a window-side chair with a pen, pad and atypically cream-coloured bass guitar. “We usually write live, but for the first time I’m not shouting over a drumkit,” he says. “Daniel and I have a strong enough chemistry that I could picture how my voice would complement the scratch demos he emailed over. Then I could turn the guys down on my laptop, locate these colourful melodies and generally get the message across in an understated fashion.” Banks adjusting his personal volume dimmer to a hush chimes with a period of global disquiet and the yearn for reconnection:  "Flood told me the vocals on the demos evoked Mickey Rourke in "Barfly", singing to a patron at the end of the tabletop, and we never felt the need to flip that smoky intimacy into something big and loud when it came to rehearse and record. I got a real kick out of doing the opposite.”

Coming from a group whose early material was characterised by Polish knife-wielders and incarcerated serial killers, you might expect Interpol’s take on the present day to be an emotional tar pit — perhaps doubly so, given the towering credentials of Flood and Moulder’s history with Nine Inch Nails, Curve, Gary Numan, Depeche Mode and more.

Yet Banks felt the call to push in a “counterbalancing” direction, with paeans to mental resilience and the quiet power of going easy. “The nobility of the human spirit is to rebound,” he says. “Yeah, I could focus on how fucked everything is, but I feel now is the time when being hopeful is necessary, and a still-believable emotion within what makes Interpol Interpol.” Kessler concurs: “The process of writing this record and searching for tender, resonant emotions took me back to teenage years; it was transformative, almost euphoric. I felt a rare sensation of purpose biting on the end of my fishing rod and I was compelled to reel it in.”

Even with spare piano caressing the intro of "Something Changed", open-hearted cyclical chord progressions on "Passenger", or anthemic waves of Kessler’s cresting guitar on "Big Shot City", it doesn’t mean Interpol are entirely stopping to smell the roses, though. 'The Other Side of Make-Believe'’s title, cover and a frequent lyrical lean toward fables, smokescreens and the mutability of truth reflect Banks’ disgust with the curdling of the information age. “I feel like the slipperiness of reality, and being willing to get violent on the basis of a factual disagreement, has had a super strenuous effect on the psyche of everyone in the world. Although,” he laughs, “I was talking about it so often that it kind of spooked my bandmates, so I found a way to express my concerns more through the lens of human beings' non-rational faculties, and less civilizational collapse.”

On 'The Other Side of Make-Believe', a deep interpersonal understanding means each member respects the other’s respective strengths better than ever, letting Interpol’s elemental qualities shine through. Song by song, Kessler sketches the architectural blueprint (invariably while watching a film — locus of inspiration for almost every song in the band’s catalogue), Banks frames artwork on the wall, then Fogarino arranges the furniture to have a certain positioning and intent.

Fogarino highlights Flood’s part in this equation “was to hyperbolise all of our good qualities. Our band has never exploited rock ‘n roll tropes, no big drum fills or wailing solos, so he located the core honesty in our sound and found a way to widen it. There’s a phrase I love about drumming: ‘the rhythm hates the melody’ — the best kind of drumming either totally accentuates what’s being conveyed, or ploughs through it.” So what does the splashy, dramatic beat on songs like "Renegade Hearts" and "Gran Hotel" imply? The answer comes back with a grin: “I guess Flood gave me room to plough.”

The band found themselves struck by the producer’s egoless way of operating and the breeziness of recording in his North London studio. They also seem charged by how much Flood and Moulder complimented, rather than challenged, their kinetic energy when performing. “I wouldn’t change a thing,” Kessler states. And though he means Flood and Moulder’s contributions, that sentiment extends to Interpol’s work as a whole.

'The Other Side of Make-Believe' will soon feel as familiar in the public consciousness as it is to Paul Banks, Daniel Kessler and Sam Fogarino. Ever the paradox, the noirish trio have weathered nearly seven albums’ and several line-ups’ worth of rollercoasters far better than anyone might have predicted, never letting their sense of purpose escape. Over time, tags like ‘alternative’ and ‘indie’ have even faded from view. They are simply a rock group nowadays; one of the most distinctive, consequential and enduring rock groups of the 21st century so far. And a quarter-century into their lifespan, the band are all fired up again.

Interpol: their methods refined, still in terrific shape.

New From Horsegirl - "World Of Pots And Pans"

(video by Horsegirl with Marisa Gesualdi and Sabrina Nichols)

Chicago's Horsegirl have had an electric start to 2022 beginning with the announcement of their debut album, 'Versions of Modern Performance', out June 3rd. The trio were dubbed the “champions of SXSW 2022” by NME, and won the Grulke Prize for Developing U.S. Act, before touring the Northeast, including a sold out New York City debut at Market Hotel. Today, they continue on that trajectory with the release of new single and lyric video, “World of Pots and Pans.” Following the propulsive “Anti-glory,” “World of Pots and Pans” has a rough, blown-out pop charm.

The band elaborates: “‘World of Pots and Pans’ is the first love song Horsegirl has ever written—or the closest thing to it. We wrote it in Penelope’s basement while preparing to leave for our first ever tour. The lyrics, inspired by the misinterpretation of a Television Personalities lyric, imagine a (possibly unrequited) romance unfolding through references to Tall Dwarfs, Belle & Sebastian, and The Pastels.

“We made the lyric video in a couple hours. The three of us had a fully formed vision of what it should look like and were able to quickly execute the real-time ‘animation’ in only two takes. It feels special to showcase our creative chemistry, and Nora was able to finally carry out her childhood dreams of making an OK Go (ish) type video.”
