Fucked Up - '44th & Vanderbilt' EP

(stream/purchase 'The Chemistry Of Common Life')

Last fall, we celebrated the 15th anniversary of Fucked Up’s ‘The Chemistry of Common Life’ – an era-defining punk LP that also just so happened to be the Canadian band’s Matador Records debut. This Friday, our long-in-the-works orange vinyl 2xLP reissue will finally arrive on shelves.

Today, you can listen to a brand new digital EP, ‘44th & Vanderbilt,’ which compiles three ‘ChemCom’-era session performances with No Age’s excellent remix of “No Epiphany".

We’ve also posted a new episode of the Matador Revisionist History podcast, which finds Mike Haliechuk and Jonah Falco in conversation with former Matador fixture (and current World of Echo proprietor), Natalie Judge. They discuss making the record, recording nine months of overdubs, quitting their day jobs, and asking Michael Stipe to jump on the mic for a Feelies cover at the close of their 12-hour long record release show (spoiler: he passed).

Today, 'The Chemistry of Common Life' remains as conceptually ambitious as it is musically adventurous, pushing through and far beyond the accepted boundaries of punk and hardcore. At the time, we called it “an expansive epic about the mysteries of birth, death, and the origins of life (and re-living). Merging elements of hardcore songwriting with up to 70 tracks of guitars, organs, winds and vocals the music remains iconoclastic and startling.”

Pavement - 'Crooked Rain Crooked Rain' 30th Anniversary

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the formal release of Pavement’s 2nd album, ‘Crooked Rain Crooked Rain’. While some would prefer to commemorate the occasion with long essays, ill-advised covers or a series of tribute night at City Winery (I suppose that would also entail ill-advised covers, though you could opt for originals “in-the-style of”), your friends at Matador know there’s only two ways you really wanna celebrate ; by buying the album (again) or streaming it (over and over again).

Fucked Up - 'The Chemistry of Common Life' (15th Anniversary)

(Fucked Up, 2008. Credit: David Waldman)

Stream / Pre-order 'The Chemistry of Common Life' Vinyl

Originally released October 7th, 2008, The Chemistry of Common Life is the second album by Toronto punk band Fucked Up.

Today, we celebrate the record’s 15th anniversary with the promise of a fresh-looking orange vinyl reissue due out February 23rd. Pre-order it HERE.

The band has also completed a new video for the song “Black Albino Bones,” which is assembled from era-appropriate tour photos, videos, and ephemera. And, finally, Matador’s hardworking archivists have unearthed a never-before-seen 30-minute clip from The Chemistry of Common Life’s still-much-discussed 12-hour-long NYC record release show – an event that somehow roped-in members of The Vivian Girls, Vampire Weekend, and The Cro-Mags, as well as J. Mascis and, very briefly, Michael Stipe.

(Video created by Tiff Pritchett)

Today, The Chemistry of Common Life remains as conceptually ambitious as it is musically adventurous, pushing through and far beyond the accepted boundaries of punk and hardcore. At the time, we called it “an expansive epic about the mysteries of birth, death, and the origins of life (and re-living). Merging elements of hardcore songwriting with up to 70 tracks of guitars, organs, winds and vocals the music remains iconoclastic and startling.”

Fucked Up drummer Jonah Falco writes:

“After Hidden World it felt like all of the musical impulses of Fucked Up condensed and turned into this musical dew, which inexplicably settled in this heavier, condensed place. The layering became way more intentional and focused, and instead of just making things long for the sake of being long, dense for the sake of being dense, the length and weight of our songs was necessary to house new found compositional moves. Development, tension, narrative, and space in song.

In some ways it felt like mockery – putting bongos on ‘Crooked Head’ and French horn on ‘Days of Last,’ ‘Royal Swan’ having about 1% punk involved, etc. – but in other ways opened the door for us moving forward to give these outlying ideas about our music precedence in our songwriting. Chemistry was unchained and free creativity from inexperienced and raw, but demanding and developing musicians.”

Next week, Fucked Up will play a special one-off show, performing The Chemistry of Common Life in its entirety at Toronto’s Horshoe Tavern.

The group will also tour throughout North America, the UK, and the EU this fall, with appearances at Pitchfork Music Festival in London and the Primava Weekender in Benidorm. Find the complete itinerary below.

Out Today : The New Pornographers - 'Electric Version' (20th Anniversary Edition) LP / The New Pornographers On The Matador Revisionist History Podcast

stream / purchase 'The Electric Version' (20th Anniversary Edition)

In May, The New Pornographers’ sophomore album ‘Electric Version’ (2003) celebrated its 20th anniversary. A limited blue vinyl reissue hits stores today and we’ve also dedicated this latest episode of our Matador Revisionist History podcast to the record, with the band’s A.C. Newman joining longtime Matador publicist Nils Bernstein for a stroll down memory lane with our host, Matt Sweeney.

The Matador Revisionist History Podcast

They discuss how ‘Electric Version’ defied the un-follow-up-able-ness of ‘Mass Romantic,’ how LA neo-hippies Beachwood Sparks inspired the record’s title, and supply a complete track-by-track walkthrough.

“As much as it’s this hard-driving record with these exciting songs that have a lot of information, there’s still a lot of ups and downs and emotional twists and turns,” recalls Bernstein. “It’s just hook after hook after hook.”

The era-appropriate rarity “Turn” – originally a Japan-only bonus track – is now available on streaming services. Newly pristine remasters of the “All For Swinging You Around” and “The Laws Have Changed” music videos are also now on YouTube.

The New Pornographers have dates planned throughout the fall, touring songs from their just-released ninth album, ‘Continue as a Guest’ (Merge). Find a complete itinerary below.

Pretty Girls Make Graves - 'The New Romance' 20th Anniversary Edition

Today, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Pretty Girls Make Graves’ sophomore album, 'The New Romance'. Originally released in 2003, this was the Seattle punk band’s Matador Records debut.

After more than a decade out of print, the album will return to us in a limited edition white vinyl pressing in stores on November 3. Pre-order that HERE. A deluxe digital version also lands today on digital services and features two b-sides “Magic Lights,” newly available on streaming, and a cover of Bow Wow Wow’s home-taping anthem, “C-30 C-60 C-90 Go!” We’ve also posted remastered music videos for singles “All Medicated Geniuses” and “This is Our Emergency.”

Singer Andrea Zollo and guitarist J. Clark guest on the latest installment of our Matador Revisionist History podcast series alongside producer Phil Ek and our host, Matt Sweeney.

Pretty Girls Make Graves formed in Seattle in 2001. The members – Andrea Zollo, Derek Fudesco, J. Clark, Nick Dewitt, and Nathan Thelen – were already local underground luminaries, owing to their time in punk and hardcore bands like Death Wish Kids, Area 51, and Murder City Devils.

The quintet released an EP, a handful of 7” singles, and a full-length, Good Health (Lookout! Records), before getting a cold email from Matador Records founder Chris Lombardi, who may or may not have read a positive review in Pitchfork. A deal was struck and the band decamped to the bucolic Bear Creek studio to track 'The New Romance' with Ek.

In the podcast, Zollo and Clark go deep on the band’s early years, talking influences (Drive Like Jehu, Ink & Dagger, Fugazi), rock band do’s / don’ts, and what it’s like to practice riffs in a freezing cold paper mache igloo.

Out Today : Kurt Vile - 'Wakin On A Pretty Daze' (10th Anniversary Edition)

(photo: Shawn Brackbill)

Stream / Purchae limited vinyl for 'Wakin On A Pretty Daze'

We're pleased to (re)-announce that upon 10th anniversary of Kurt Vile's beloved fifth full-length and first 2xLP, ‘Wakin on a Pretty Daze’ (2013), we've released a special blue/yellow vinyl edition.

This limited pressing will also include a reproduction of the “make your own cover” ESPO sticker sheet that accompanied the original 2013 special-edition. A special 'Wakin' shirt designed by ESPO is also available to purchase separately or bundle with an LP on both webstores. A yellow vinyl version of the record is available everywhere.

Where previous albums alternated between gorgeous fingerpicking and heavy guitar workouts, ‘Wakin’ blended the two into dreamy and expansive songs that frequently stretched well out beyond the five-minute mark.

Back then we said: “It’s a record that would have sounded great 30 years ago, sounds great today, and will still sound great 30 years from now.” Ten years down the line, we’re still confident that ‘Wakin’ will deliver the goods – yesterday, today, and in 2043.

The reissue serves as the latest entry in Matador Records’ Revisionist History series, our ongoing campaign to jog the record-buying (and streaming!) public’s memory, though "jolt" could be used in place of :"jog".

Liz Phair - 'Exile in Guyville' 30th Anniversary Tour

Purchase / Stream 'Exile in Guyville'

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Liz Phair’s beloved debut record, 'Exile In Guyville,' which was first released on June 22, 1993 via Matador.

An 18-track double album loosely framed as a song-by-song reply to The Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main St., Exile In Guyville was dubbed a classic upon arrival. The album’s profile has only risen in the ensuing years. It is now regarded as an iconic work and a feminist landmark, recently ranked #4 in Pitchfork’s “Best 150 Albums of the 1990s” and cracking the top 100 of Rolling Stone’s “Best 500 Albums of All Time.”

This fall, Phair will celebrate the record by launching a full band US tour and performing Exile In Guyville in its entirety (along with some additional hits) at some of the largest venues of her career. Pre-sales will begin on Wednesday, May 17. All dates will be on sale to the public at 10am local time on Friday, May 19.

Matador Revisionist History Continued : The New Pornographers - 'Electric Version' 20th Anniversary Edition

"All For Swinging You Around" (directed by Blaine Thurier)

"The Laws Have Changed" (directed by Blaine Thurier)

This week, Matador Records will celebrate the 20th anniversary of The New
Pornographers’ second full-length, 'Electric Version' – first released May 6, 2003 – with a limited-edition opaque blue vinyl reissue out September 22. Today, the band’s era-appropriate rarity “Turn” – originally a Japan-only bonus track – will make its debut on streaming services. Newly pristine remasters of the “All For Swinging You Around” and “The Laws Have Changed” music videos will also be made available on YouTube.

(preorder 'Electric Version' on LP / stream 'Electric Version' and "Turn")

As for the music: no sophomore slumping to be found here. Back then we wrote, “Withmimpossibly huge hooks and an innate understanding of every pop trick in the book, this follow-up to 2000’s breakthrough Mass Romantic is the most exciting pop record we’ve heard in a long while.” For once, tastemakers of the day shared our enthusiasm. “The
New Pornographers mix the pop purism of the Beach Boys, the power charge of Cheap Trick and the gentle psychedelia of Syd Barrett,” wrote the New York Times, who labeled 'Electric Version', “some of the best pop of the year.”

The New Pornographers have dates planned throughout the spring and fall, touring songs from their just-released ninth album, 'Continue as a Guest' (Merge). Regarding the new record, Rolling Stone called it, "an LP that delivers its vivid emotional payoff in subtle gestures...the results can be magisterial." Find a complete itinerary below.

In 2023, Kurt Vile is making numbers count. Just last month, Matador Records presented the iconic Philadelphia songwriter with a (vegan) cheesesteak trophy to commemorate the 100-millionth stream of “Pretty Pimpin” on Spotify.

Today, though, we’d like to draw your attention to another significant KV digit: The 10th anniversary of his fifth full-length and first 2xLP, ‘Wakin on a Pretty Daze’ (2013).

To celebrate this milestone, we’ve brought the record back as a blue + yellow vinyl split available via KV and Matador webstores. This limited pressing will also include a reproduction of the “make your own cover” ESPO sticker sheet that accompanied the original 2013 special-edition. A special 'Wakin' shirt designed by ESPO is also available to purchase separately or bundle with an LP on both webstores. A yellow vinyl version of the record will be made available everywhere.

The reissue serves as the latest entry in Matador Records’ Revisionist History series, our ongoing campaign to jog the record-buying (and streaming!) public’s memory about our many catalog items now poised to celebrate a significant anniversary. Matador will mark these anniversaries with new reissues and re-pressings.  So far, the Revisionist History class of 2023 has highlighted Bettie Serveert’s Palomine, Pavement’s Slanted and Enchanted, and Yo La Tengo’s I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One.

Matador Revisionist History Podcast Episode 8: Spoon's Britt Daniel and Interpol's Paul Banks

Our core philosophy here at Matador Revisionist History HQ is “What you want, once we’re ready.” And this time, we’re really living up to that.

Last summer, we celebrated the 20th anniversaries of Interpol’s Turn on the Bright Lights and Spoon’s Kill the Moonlight – two career-defining records that were released on the very same day in August of 2002.

Around that time, front men Paul Banks and Britt Daniel huddled with our host Matt Sweeney and taped an episode of the RH podcast. Seven months later, we’re finally prepared for you to hear it.

Everybody on this episode goes way, way back: Sweeney met Daniel during Spoon’s first tour. He met Banks when Turn on the Bright Lights was released, which is around the time Banks initially met Daniel. They reminisce about NYC’s Luna Lounge, Paul explains the importance of yelling in an Interpol song, and Britt stakes his claim to the cowboy hat from the “Wild” video.

Bettie Serveert - 'Palomine' 30th Anniversary Edition

Kicking off Matador’s Revisionist History Series for 2023, today we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Bettie Serveert’s debut album, ‘Palomine’. Heralded in its original four-star review by Rolling Stone as "untamed and free as pop gets,” this 1993 classic will see its first pressing by Matador since the album's original release on June 23rd on limited-edition translucent orange vinyl, accompanied by the “Brain-Tag” 7”, which was included with the original pressing.

(stream / preorder 'Palomine')

A deluxe digital edition of the album is out today on streaming services, featuring three era-appropriate bonus songs (two of which are drawn from the ‘Brain-Tag’ 7”) – “Smile”, “Maggot”, and “Get The Bird.” Newly remastered versions of the music videos for “Kid’s Allright,” “Palomine,” and “Tom Boy” are available to watch on YouTube HERE.

“Looking back on recording the Palomine album, we were as green as grass,” say the band’s Carol van Dyk and Peter Visser, “but we loved music and most of all, we loved playing our own songs. When we started our band in the summer of ’91, we never had any ambitions, never thought about a 'career' in music, beyond maybe playing a gig or two. But then Matador Records responded to our 1st demo, offering us a record deal, which started the ball rolling and it changed our lives forever! ‘Pal o’ mine’ will always be like a dear friend to us and even after 30 years, we still enjoy playing those songs.”

While a debut album, ‘Palomine’ marked the second time around for Bettie Serveert. The band first formed in Arnhem in 1986, first calling themselves Betty Serveert, with bassist Herman Bunskoeke, guitarist Peter Visser, and singer/guitarist Carol van Dyk. At that time, Bunskoeke and Visser were also playing in a more established band, De Artsen, and decided to focus on their main gig. Betty Serveert ceased to exist after 6 months and van Dyk joined up as De Artsen’s sound engineer.

By late 1990 De Artsen had split. Bettie Serveert, as they now called themselves, reconvened, joined by drummer Berend Dubbe. A seven-song demo was recorded in December 1991 and one copy ended up in our one-room lower Broadway office.

It’s important to note that nobody in this band is named “Bettie Serveert.” The name – which translates into “Bettie served” (as in tennis) – was suggested by drummer Berend Dubbe, who had seen a tennis-instruction book by Dutch tennis player, Betty Stöve.

The reissue serves as the latest entry in Matador Records’ Revisionist History series, our ongoing campaign to jog the record-buying (and streaming!) public’s memory about our many catalog items now poised to celebrate a significant anniversary.

Interpol - 'The Black EP' / 'Turn On The Bright Lights' (2002 Documentary)

(photo : Michael Edwards)

On August 20th, Interpol’s canonical debut album 'Turn On The Bright Lights' turns 20. To commemorate this moment, the band today make the fan-favorite and TOTBL companion 'The Black EP' available on digital platforms.

Originally released on August 26, 2003, as a limited-edition CD, the long out of print 'The Black EP' features the studio version of "Say Hello To The Angels", a demo of "NYC" and four TOTBL-era songs recorded live in session for Radio France in 2002, including fabled non-album bonus track "Specialist".

Accompanying the release is a 2002 short documentary on the band made by a French subsidiary of then-label EMI. Hitherto lost in the annals of 144p
YouTube rips, the 13-minute clip is brought to glorious hi-res restoration,
featuring interviews with the band as well as snippets of performances of
‘PDA’, ‘NYC’, ‘Untitled’ and ‘Stella was a diver and she was always down’.

Coming September 9 : Spoon - 'Kill The Moonlight' 20th Anniversary White Vinyl Edition

"The Way We Get By" (directed by Steve Hanft)

Here’s one of those videos where I'm still trying to figure out what’s going on. I remember we worked on a shot of me making a suggestive handoff of a seemingly nefarious package, and some espionage-like loose story that was to be bookended by a little performance done on the sidewalk without a permit. Shot in a few hours in Chinatown during a 19-day van tour where we had no days off, the package handoff sequence had to be removed from the edit because MTV deemed it too indicative of a drug deal. I’m not sure what happened to the rest of the story but this thing holds up pretty well. The video was directed by Steve Hanft who had among other things, and this is the truth, years earlier directed a movie I had never heard of called "Kill The Moonlight". I thought I'd discovered that phrase in an early 19th century futurist manifesto. And well, I had. But so had he. Picture me trying to explain that to him on set when he thought our album referenced his movie. Steve had also shot the video for Beck’s song "Loser" and Beck put an album out one month after ours which had a song on it called "Paper Tiger", as did 'Kill The Moonlight'. That’s some universe type shit
. - Britt Daniel

On September 9 we're releasing a special white vinyl edition to mark the 20th anniversary of Spoon's landmark 4th album 'Kill The Moonlight', originally released by Merge in North America and 12XU in Europe. Considered by many to amongst the band's finest works, we're not likely to make more additional white vinyl copies of 'Kill The Moonlight' until the 40th anniversary rolls around, so preorder yours while you have a chance.
